Wayne Rooney is a major concern for both Alex Ferguson and his fantasy owners this evening after suffering an ankle injury in United’s 2-1 Champions League defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Rooney was helped from the pitch after sustaining what appeared to be a twisted ankle shortly after Bayern’s late winner. He had earlier given United the lead after just 66 seconds.

After being rested for United’s trip to Bolton last weekend Rooney now looks an early doubt for the vital clash with Chelsea on Saturday as well as the second leg with the Germans.

Right now there’s no confirmation on the extent of the injury with Alex Ferguson playing down the situation whilst stating that United will assess the damage tomorrow.

“He’s obviously hurt his ankle. It’s too early to say [but] I don’t think it’s terribly serious.” . He may be doubtful for Saturday (against Chelsea), but it’s too early to say.”

Rooney’s fantasy owners can at least draw some reassurance from the fact that if Rooney is fit, he will surely play against Chelsea. That’s in stark contrast to the Cesc Fabregas situation where Arsene Wenger could well preserve his skipper for the Champions League second leg with Barcelona rather than play him against Wolves on Saturday.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
