Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch

Lets take a bit of a journey down memory lane to month ago, to the end of Gameweek 3. If like me you can’t remember what you did yesterday let alone a month ago, allow me to remind you – this was the last international break. Like them or loath them this period saw a large majority of Fantasy Football Scout managers (attempting to) improve their teams using the incredibly useful but oft wasted perk of the game – the Wildcard.

The benefit of utilising the Wildcard during an international break is the amount of time it allows you to make the most of price increases, as well as giving you added time to weigh up the pro’s and cons of bringing certain players in. The gap between Gameweek 3 and 4 saw a number of managers do just that as well as providing the opportunity to remove the dead wood which they’d spent the summer collecting. The end of Gameweek 7 sees another international break and an opportunity for those who thought better of utilising it back then to have a little fiddle with their teams and hopefully create the much sought after “perfect team” (that is until they hate their team again).

Not only does the international break seem like an ideal opportunity to improve Fantasy Football teams but it comes off the back of an incredibly average week for a lot of managers. Under performance of key players and the form of others have seen heads turn and in the cutthroat world of Fantasy Football that means changes. For others who’ve used up this fantasy perk, this week has given food for thought about the transfers they need to make to sort out their teams. Changes need to be made and for many these changes will involve players wearing the red of Liverpool.

Fantasy football fans need to be re-educated and retrained and this writer is no exception. With all due respect to Blackpool, before the season started, the proposition of a home tie for any team against the Tangerines, on paper, looked a banker. But Blackpool bar a couple of games against Arsenal and Chelsea have excelled. Call it the “Hull” factor, scoff at the thought of them staying up, but the fact remains for now it would appear dangerous to back a team against them. On the flip side for sorry Liverpool it looks difficult to back them against anyone.

Many people brought in Liverpool players this week, namely the big guns Gerrard and Torres, for the game against the t’other pool in the league. Many more will be getting rid of them over the next couple of weeks. Coming second and fourth in the Captain Poll this week a number of people would have expected a big return from the two lads in red. Certainly those with Gerrard will ultimately be relieved that they managed to get anything out of the game at all and for those with Torres nothing much can be said to console those who captained him. 1 point doubled to 2 makes you feel a bit sick.

Many will look to dump Gerrard for Fabregas to coincide with the Spaniards expected return from injury, others will look to the Dutch master Rafael Van der Vaart who has made a blistering start to his career in a Spurs shirt. For those with Torres the question seems to be – “who on earth do I get?” Certainly for the minority that don’t have Drogba, this would be the obvious choice. Otherwise the obvious would suggest the dependable Tevez or the consistent Mr Bent.

There’s always a temptation to retain “expensive” players as they make you feel safe. Form, however, is far more important than reputations in Fantasy Football and players like Torres unfortunately are lacking in the former. Why not take a look at lower priced options who have been performing well and who are sitting atop the FPL form guide at the moment. The resurgent Johan Elmander at Bolton has been in impressive form of late with 4 goals and 2 assists already this season. With three home games in the next four for the Swede, now may be the time to downgrade from a bit hitter and free up some cash to move around the team. An alternative is the incredible cheap Luke Varney. With 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games its hard to ignore the ex-Championship journeyman. Remember this is Knee Jerk so take it with a pinch of salt but at 4.5m and like Elmander with three home games in the next four, it may well be worth a look.

Fantasy Football can often be won and lost on punts and whilst, in previous years, it would have been hard to imagine calling bringing Torres in for a home game against Blackpool as a “punt”, it may be better to move away from so called “big” players to the smaller, but seemingly more fruitful bargain buys, if gains are to be made in this most inconsistent of seasons.

    CIVIL WAR
    Good V Evil
    Toffs V Proles
    Members V Non-Members

After another suprising gameweek where many of the 'big guns' offered scant returns both sides yet again yielded low scores. The dastardly barbarian hordes of the Non Members won last week making it two on the trot, so it was imperative for the Members to up there game. The hero for the Members side was Bhoys from Bruzil with an honourable 64, yet once again this was overshadowed by a spawny 73 from NoNayNeverNoMore for the Non Members. Well done to Wildrover on that impressive score.
The cumulative scores for Gameweek 7 are as follows

    ..........drum roll...............

    MEMBERS 809 V 854 NON MEMBERS

Disaster - the fortress of Members has been breached and the Non Members are busy looting, pillaging and erm you know the other one. This makes it 3-4 to the Non Members in gameweeks and brings the cumulative scores to:

    MEMBERS 6870 V 6853 NON MEMBERS

A mere 17 points is all that stands between civilization and anarchy, we members must turn the tide before defeat becomes endemic.

Anyhoo congratulations to the evil non-members and thanks all for playing.

thinking of wild carding to this:
    Gilks Krul
    Konchesky Givet Carr Foley Elmo
    Malouda Adam VdV Nani Fabregas
    Drogba Tevez Carroll

Pretty light at the back I know, but this tactic has worked out ok for me so far. Plus I figure with 7 keepers/defenders from different clubs I should be able to pick four starters each week.
Would appreciate any advice? am i mising anything???

Liverpool would have kept a clean sheet if Konchesky has played today. 😉

No, seriously, Liverpool are going to have an average season but for 5.0, he should return an ok amount of clean sheets, oerhaps 12 - 15, instead of the 18 - 21 that the Liverpool of 08/09 and 09/10 would have got.

    I have a choice
    1) Albrighton to Adam
    2) Keep Albrighton

Albrighton is on 4.6 (I bought at 4.5) with almost NTI of 3000 today and at 6.7%
Adam is on 5.1 with 90%

So my dilemma is: is Adam more likely to go up 0.2 during Intl break OR is Albrighton going to go up 0.1?

It means people are buying them in but they have to recover back to 0% on the drops to then enter the 'rises' list and then when they get to 100% on there, then they go up in price.

Think of it as one big list that has been chopped in half and labelled 'Rises' (Top Half), and 'Falls' (Bottom Half).

Yeah, that's right. Albrighton is nowhere near going up, but he probably will go up once over the next two gameweeks. I will be buying him most likely, he's better bench material than Routledge - Albrighton can actually beat defenders and get goals and assists.

Alex seems to be nailed on now, particularly after his showing today. I think Carlo knows his best CB pairing is Terry and Alex.

O'Shea was rested for Valencia, but i agree, he's got a fight on his hands for his place. Rafael and Evra offer far more attacking threat.

I'm afraid I can't tell you that. I'm sticking with O'Shea, just because he's done me well and i don't really want to transfer him out just incase he plays.

No idea tbh. I don't really do long term plans, but Utd have a good enough fixtures coming up that it's not on the agenda.

Bloody hell - excellent gamesweek for you Akers - well done.

I've got two weeks to dust myself down after a mediocre 40 points this week. Having a mix of the big names isn't totally working at present and people like Bale/Malouda could be transferred into cheaper midfield bargains.

I agree - Fabs is a must and that Everton win at Birmingham may well herald an upturn in their fortunes. Mikel "3 bonus points" Arteta will thrive even more when Everton find a decent striker.

I have to say that Tim Cahill is on my radar - he's grabbing one or two important goals recently but injury always seems to follow him round...

I'm wondering whether it were possible if a load of people playing their wildcards on here were to, simultaneously purchase a really crap low value player with a view to pushing the players price up .2 in order to simultaneously sell said player and all make a .1 profit. Bit hard work to coordinate i'll admit and i don't know if it'd even work.. just a thought though

You need to lose 10% of your ownership to drop. As Boselli is a bit of an unknown before the season started, he was probably only owned by serious players of the game, such as us lot on here, and possibly any Wigan fans out there.

Since Boselli was mainly owned by serious players of the game, (instead of the people that don't care about FPL too much and just leave their team as it is), then the serious players still do transfers and would have shipped his sorry ass out.

    Is Gardner going down tonight?

I don't really want to lose value on him but then again don't want to knee-jerk into something, particularly as I also have to ship Gerrard and haven't really made my mind up on what to do with him yet (probably bring in Fab and cheapo (Ferguson?), but could go for a Nani/VDV combo, and added complexity of Alex injury...

Yeah, it happens. Look on the positive side:

1.) It shows you have a decent squad

2.) It will prevent your bench fodder from dropping in value which helps maintain team value when/if you ever come to sell them later in the season.
