Lets take a bit of a journey down memory lane to month ago, to the end of Gameweek 3. If like me you can’t remember what you did yesterday let alone a month ago, allow me to remind you – this was the last international break. Like them or loath them this period saw a large majority of Fantasy Football Scout managers (attempting to) improve their teams using the incredibly useful but oft wasted perk of the game – the Wildcard.

The benefit of utilising the Wildcard during an international break is the amount of time it allows you to make the most of price increases, as well as giving you added time to weigh up the pro’s and cons of bringing certain players in. The gap between Gameweek 3 and 4 saw a number of managers do just that as well as providing the opportunity to remove the dead wood which they’d spent the summer collecting. The end of Gameweek 7 sees another international break and an opportunity for those who thought better of utilising it back then to have a little fiddle with their teams and hopefully create the much sought after “perfect team” (that is until they hate their team again).

Not only does the international break seem like an ideal opportunity to improve Fantasy Football teams but it comes off the back of an incredibly average week for a lot of managers. Under performance of key players and the form of others have seen heads turn and in the cutthroat world of Fantasy Football that means changes. For others who’ve used up this fantasy perk, this week has given food for thought about the transfers they need to make to sort out their teams. Changes need to be made and for many these changes will involve players wearing the red of Liverpool.

Fantasy football fans need to be re-educated and retrained and this writer is no exception. With all due respect to Blackpool, before the season started, the proposition of a home tie for any team against the Tangerines, on paper, looked a banker. But Blackpool bar a couple of games against Arsenal and Chelsea have excelled. Call it the “Hull” factor, scoff at the thought of them staying up, but the fact remains for now it would appear dangerous to back a team against them. On the flip side for sorry Liverpool it looks difficult to back them against anyone.

Many people brought in Liverpool players this week, namely the big guns Gerrard and Torres, for the game against the t’other pool in the league. Many more will be getting rid of them over the next couple of weeks. Coming second and fourth in the Captain Poll this week a number of people would have expected a big return from the two lads in red. Certainly those with Gerrard will ultimately be relieved that they managed to get anything out of the game at all and for those with Torres nothing much can be said to console those who captained him. 1 point doubled to 2 makes you feel a bit sick.

Many will look to dump Gerrard for Fabregas to coincide with the Spaniards expected return from injury, others will look to the Dutch master Rafael Van der Vaart who has made a blistering start to his career in a Spurs shirt. For those with Torres the question seems to be – “who on earth do I get?” Certainly for the minority that don’t have Drogba, this would be the obvious choice. Otherwise the obvious would suggest the dependable Tevez or the consistent Mr Bent.

There’s always a temptation to retain “expensive” players as they make you feel safe. Form, however, is far more important than reputations in Fantasy Football and players like Torres unfortunately are lacking in the former. Why not take a look at lower priced options who have been performing well and who are sitting atop the FPL form guide at the moment. The resurgent Johan Elmander at Bolton has been in impressive form of late with 4 goals and 2 assists already this season. With three home games in the next four for the Swede, now may be the time to downgrade from a bit hitter and free up some cash to move around the team. An alternative is the incredible cheap Luke Varney. With 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games its hard to ignore the ex-Championship journeyman. Remember this is Knee Jerk so take it with a pinch of salt but at 4.5m and like Elmander with three home games in the next four, it may well be worth a look.

Fantasy Football can often be won and lost on punts and whilst, in previous years, it would have been hard to imagine calling bringing Torres in for a home game against Blackpool as a “punt”, it may be better to move away from so called “big” players to the smaller, but seemingly more fruitful bargain buys, if gains are to be made in this most inconsistent of seasons.

When I look at my space bar andhit it then it gives a space but when Idonot look at my space bar andhit it then it does not give a space, need a newkeyboard. Anyway is Fabregas worth worrying about is he essential because he has about fourty players above himin midfieldpoints and all of them cheaper than Fabregas. Am I just being a Chimp or does stressing over getting Fabregas just not add up. Also will Tevez be rested for Blackpool?

Will Hart go up 0.2 during the break? TO expensive to keep if want to squeeze Fabs back in, but worth trying to get 0.1 from him in Intl break?

    OR

Al-Habsi, lots of transfers in as very cheap

I mean by top level as the latter stages of the CL and International level.

                    He has neither.

Dont get me wrong I think he is good and fine for top 8 club but not as good as he is made out to be.

Celtic are not top level and if you look at his record besides getting them to uefa final (like Roy did with fulham with no budget) it was poor.

He never got them out of the group stages for one.

I dont think he is a good as he is made out. He didnt do anything with Villa in Europe and spent a massive amount of money.

Are you saying Celtic are a top level club?

By top level i mean based on performance alone.

I dont dispute they are a Huge club with massive following etc but they are not exactly competing fot the European cup .

They just got hammered by a mid table team in Holland.

Success in Europe requires another level of richness to that of Celtic or Villa. Or Liverpool for that matter. I reckon he'd only take that job with a guarantee of money, which would mean new owners first.

He forges winning sides, which punch above their weight.

Come on, they're not that bad..... the one thing I'll gie Liverpool fans credit for is that they always give a new manager time to settle down. They'll probably tonk us next week anyway. Hodgson will be a hero, and they can all go back to blaming the owners again

Good, that's what I'm doing too. Birmingham shouldn't get tonked at the Emirates, they aren't that bad. I think last season it was Arsenal 3 - 1 Birmingham and Fabregas got:

        2 points for turning up
        3 points for 1 assist
        3 bonus points

Playing Devils advocate as I have no WC of my own to play with. If you play a cheap but decent scoring strike trio (with rotation intent) ie Odemthingy, Elmander and Carroll then the MF and defense options are staggering. Take your pick.

Something I'm thinking about, the 2 cheapies who rotate, it's that or Tevez, or I'm either thinking about Bent, even he gives u plenty more options (ie keeping Cole) and just take the rough with the smooth with him, I still reckon he will get 15+ goals this season

Playing those 3 upfront I got a mf of
VdV, Nani, Lampard, Arteta and Fabs and a defence that included Cashley and any Man C def and a bit of money to spare.

The fact that you don't have a big-gun striker is negated by the fact that you are playing FIVE great midfielders each week.

Bent + 2 cheapies that score, (Carroll/Odemwingie/Elmander) means that you can have an insane midfield that can comfortably include both Fabregas AND Lampard when he's back.

Well, there we have it, another week in the bag, 38 for me, rubbish again, and one of those weekends where you feel you have had absolutely no luck whatsoever. That being said, I wasn't confident going in that I would have much joy, and I was relying on Gerrard (oh dear? A Liverpoor player) to get me a good score today, which he didn't, but the assist and 2 points for turning out wasn't the worst as a captain choice - it could of been Torres.

Just looking at the scores around the place, and it seems that most people that did well had 2 players in their teams (I am seeing alot of Cole/Alex and Johnson/N'Zogbia/Van Der Vaart/Etherington combos) that carried the rest of the team. Cole and Alex, scored (Cole an assist) well, and in the circumstances few would of banked on a clean sheet, regardless of Arsenal being "Fabless", scoring as a defender is also not something you can expect, so a nice bit of luck there, but balls for sticking with those 2 none the less throughout "is he too much?" debates and "will he be dropped debates".

So, I didn't have any of these "2 players", just bad luck really, to all the people freaking out that they have had "an awful week", you too will have "those 2 players" some week, and despite it being miserable to do so bad at this game sometimes, it really is joyous when you have a good weekend, and it is for that weekend we look forward to.

    Onwards, and upwards, Wildcard week!

Personally I wouldn't. I think the only player who will go mad price wise is VdV, and bear in mind that Lampard has yet to return. If he turns back into a points machine then it will be exceedingly difficult to bring him in without a wildcard.
You have a pretty good side that only needs minor tweaking

Bar Gerrard in there there is very little I would change in that team, I am looking at a midfield like that and I am WC'ing this week, no need, Fabregas IN for Gerrard, and maybe Bale OUT for VDV, Bob's your uncle and Fanny's your aunt. Oh and Dembele OUT obviously, still nothing too urgent

This season i tried to spread my dosh around evenly in midfield and up front and avoid the big money players except for Drogs of course. Have Alex at the back with the others being of the 4.5 variety and i must say things are going well. Its just when injuries have come along i think it gives much more flexibility and also maximises the opportunities to drive up the value of your team for later use.

Im assuming Cesc wont feature in the international games...and if he does - sure theres a risk for injury but theres also the perk of him gaining match fitness.. Im hoping my gamble will pay off so I can get some money from people transferring him in..
