Im Not Marshal Foch Im Not Marshal Foch

Lets take a bit of a journey down memory lane to month ago, to the end of Gameweek 3. If like me you can’t remember what you did yesterday let alone a month ago, allow me to remind you – this was the last international break. Like them or loath them this period saw a large majority of Fantasy Football Scout managers (attempting to) improve their teams using the incredibly useful but oft wasted perk of the game – the Wildcard.

The benefit of utilising the Wildcard during an international break is the amount of time it allows you to make the most of price increases, as well as giving you added time to weigh up the pro’s and cons of bringing certain players in. The gap between Gameweek 3 and 4 saw a number of managers do just that as well as providing the opportunity to remove the dead wood which they’d spent the summer collecting. The end of Gameweek 7 sees another international break and an opportunity for those who thought better of utilising it back then to have a little fiddle with their teams and hopefully create the much sought after “perfect team” (that is until they hate their team again).

Not only does the international break seem like an ideal opportunity to improve Fantasy Football teams but it comes off the back of an incredibly average week for a lot of managers. Under performance of key players and the form of others have seen heads turn and in the cutthroat world of Fantasy Football that means changes. For others who’ve used up this fantasy perk, this week has given food for thought about the transfers they need to make to sort out their teams. Changes need to be made and for many these changes will involve players wearing the red of Liverpool.

Fantasy football fans need to be re-educated and retrained and this writer is no exception. With all due respect to Blackpool, before the season started, the proposition of a home tie for any team against the Tangerines, on paper, looked a banker. But Blackpool bar a couple of games against Arsenal and Chelsea have excelled. Call it the “Hull” factor, scoff at the thought of them staying up, but the fact remains for now it would appear dangerous to back a team against them. On the flip side for sorry Liverpool it looks difficult to back them against anyone.

Many people brought in Liverpool players this week, namely the big guns Gerrard and Torres, for the game against the t’other pool in the league. Many more will be getting rid of them over the next couple of weeks. Coming second and fourth in the Captain Poll this week a number of people would have expected a big return from the two lads in red. Certainly those with Gerrard will ultimately be relieved that they managed to get anything out of the game at all and for those with Torres nothing much can be said to console those who captained him. 1 point doubled to 2 makes you feel a bit sick.

Many will look to dump Gerrard for Fabregas to coincide with the Spaniards expected return from injury, others will look to the Dutch master Rafael Van der Vaart who has made a blistering start to his career in a Spurs shirt. For those with Torres the question seems to be – “who on earth do I get?” Certainly for the minority that don’t have Drogba, this would be the obvious choice. Otherwise the obvious would suggest the dependable Tevez or the consistent Mr Bent.

There’s always a temptation to retain “expensive” players as they make you feel safe. Form, however, is far more important than reputations in Fantasy Football and players like Torres unfortunately are lacking in the former. Why not take a look at lower priced options who have been performing well and who are sitting atop the FPL form guide at the moment. The resurgent Johan Elmander at Bolton has been in impressive form of late with 4 goals and 2 assists already this season. With three home games in the next four for the Swede, now may be the time to downgrade from a bit hitter and free up some cash to move around the team. An alternative is the incredible cheap Luke Varney. With 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games its hard to ignore the ex-Championship journeyman. Remember this is Knee Jerk so take it with a pinch of salt but at 4.5m and like Elmander with three home games in the next four, it may well be worth a look.

Fantasy Football can often be won and lost on punts and whilst, in previous years, it would have been hard to imagine calling bringing Torres in for a home game against Blackpool as a “punt”, it may be better to move away from so called “big” players to the smaller, but seemingly more fruitful bargain buys, if gains are to be made in this most inconsistent of seasons.

Just been messing around with my team, made my transfer yesterday (VDV bandwagon was too tempting), and im pretty happy with it for the first time this season.
    Robinson, Carson
    O'Shea, Alex, Dann, Elmo, Faye
Malouda, Albrighton, Van der Vaart, Nani, Ferguson
    Berbatov, Tevez, Drogba

Have .5m to spare but i'm trying to figure out how to bring Fabregas in after GW9 but I don't want to ditch any of my players. Malouda will have to leave for Cesc but where to raise the other 1.2/1.3m?

I really want to make my transfers but heading into an international week, I would hate using my free transfer only for someone to get hurt. but it's also two weeks worth of price rising and falling I would like to avoid. what's the consensus here. wait until after or act quick.

I'd say you're missing out on factoring in fixtures. Away to Man City is tough, and even so they played well. Granted, I think all the men there are good options, but you also have to ask, out of Newcastle, Wigan, Blackpool, and WBA, whose defense is the most reliable? For me, that's Newcastle closely followed by the Brom.

VDV - 17 shots (9 on target) in 4 games.

Bale - 10 shots (7 on target) in 7 games.

Losing Malouda is scary, Bale just dropped 0.1 so makes things alittle tricky. Man United will be at home next so Nani may need a call up. Fabregas would be the last trade to be made.

One thing I would say about VDV, is that he was completely untracked for both of his goals.. Petrov in particular was guilty of completely ignoring him when he was in the box. I doubt that teams will be so stupid as to ignore him next time....

I may keep Bale for this week, as he's actually achieved something in an away fixture unlike VDV, but that would mean not being able to afford VDV the following week...

Which, with Tottenham's fixtures, isn't the end of the world.

Your idea does look awesome. I certainly wish I had the balls to even consider dropping Malouda right now. I can understand it, with Chelsea's 5 game amateur preseason long gone, that the idea that Drogba is enough would certainly be infectious....but to get rid of the #2 points scorer with relatively no means of getting him back would take a lot of guts.

Arsenal lost at home to WBA, Liverpool lost at home to Blackpool, Tottenham lost to West Ham... These are teams that are meant to be challenging us, and we absolutely cruised through our first five games. People should give us more credit for that.

I agree that I can see at least one of Drogba, Malouda or Anelka being rested against Wolves, but the problem is that you won't know which until the team sheet is out. What if you're wrong and it's Drogba that gets rested for the Wolves game and Malouda rakes in a 15 point haul that 45% of the game benefit from, but not you because you took him out.

Personally I think GW14 - GW19 is the time to drop one or both.

                Them's the risks!!

I think Malouda is more likely to be rested than Drogba though.. His role in the side actually involves some running!

And we have no direct replacement for the Drog...

Just because us FPL players have no viable replacement for the Drog, (at the moment), that has no bearing on Ancelotti's decision to drop him or not, (or at least I hope that would be the case!)

However, I do agree about the 'running around more' point. Malouda was rested against West Ham for instance, perhaps with Drogba back in CL duty he may miss a PL game or two soon.

Maybe Rooney could be worth getting for Drogba if he sorts out his personal life and learns how to find the back of the net in open play.

I'm not taking about FPL when I say the isn't a direct replacement for Drogba, I'm talking about Chelsea...

Playing Anelka up front requires a totally different style of football. We'd have no out ball and Anelka spends the entire team dropping deep.

If Anelka was leading the line, we'd need the midfielders to create chances, and with Essien/Ramires/Mikel in the middle, there isn't too much creativity.

Haha! I get what you mean now. Well I don't think there is an FPL replacement for Drogba at the moment either! 😉

What about if Lampard is back, that will change the attacking nature of the middle three a bit. (Or is he confirmed out of the Wolves game?)

Chelsea won easily last season against Wolves, with Essien and Malouda starring, there was no Lampard or Drog.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think we were still playing a midfield diamond for that game, so it's not entirely relevant.

I'll also be dropping Malouda for Fabregas after week 9 which will potentially give me an attack of:
                  Fabregas, Nani, VDV, Albrighton, Ferguson
                  Tevez, Drogba, Berbatov

if you are at all confident malouda will be rested you should get rid. he's not essential at all, he's just a good player to have. i was a fabregas injury away from selling him 2 weeks ago and as expected he's done nothing these last 2 weeks.

I never say that I am confident he'll get rested for the Wolves game, but there is definitely a chance... And if he does, he has the following fixtures coming up:

            avl - liv bla

            Whereas Nani has:

            WBA stk TOT WLV

I don't think it's worth the risk of Malouda not playing the Wolves game. Totally agree with you that he isn't essential.

i have 2 free transfers for next week, so i could bring in tevez and take j evans out for just a 4pt hit, (have to take a hit to make up the £££) so thats why in slow on WC’ing, because id only get a 4pt hit if i just use transfers

SO would my team which is linked, with these changes
    J Evans > ALceraz
    Bale > Yaya Toure
    Chamakh > Tevez

be as good as a WC team?

    tinkering with my midfield
currently its: nani, malouda, bale, furguson and dempsey
thinking about: nani for fabs and bale/dempsey for VDV

Why was Bale only at 25% to drop on Fantasy Tools, but was at 91% on Fiso? Why such the big discrepancy?

      Because FT don't know shit.

The rules regarding falls are different for players whose prices have risen above their initial price. Players like Bale need an NTO equivalent to the NTI required for a rise...

i.e. Bale needed an NTO of around 29k. Not an NTO of 10% of his ownership (as with players who haven't risen above their initial price)... Otherwise the figure would be around 100k.

Carroll was only on 60% though, (at 10pm), while Bale was on 90%, still a bit surprising that he went down.

Konchesky was at 192% and didn't drop. Hmmm... some of these price rise/drops are a bit tough to predict.

In other words CTC didn't get Carroll right unless there was a big surge for Carroll. Konchesky is near 40% on FT. There are 4 others well above Konchesky on CTC. Drops are harder to predict period.

Hi People, Have gotten 56 points for this week ( happy with that score actually ) When will i know if i have qualified for the fantasy football scout cup.

And i am thinking of this 3 choices for the international break. Which is the most sensible choice to make?

    1) Richards + Yaya Toure => Coleman + Arteta 8 point hit
    2) Gerrard => Fabregas 4 point hit
    3) Sit and do nothing 0 point hit

Impossible without seeing the whole team, but...

I'm not sure I like 1 because I think Man City is the better 'eggbasket.' Yes they looked shakey and Everton improved, but I think Yaya is going to be a steal for the price. Getting rid of richards square makes sense.

If you think Fabs will light but Brum, go for 2.

3 seems the best to me: get to wait and see if Yaya or Everton improve and if you want Fabs, and when.

        Foster ( Carson )

Konchesky, Elmo, Alex ( Dann and Richards )

        Malouda, Erthington, Gerrard, Yaya, VDV

        Tevez, Berbatov ( Caroll )

        1.9 in bank.

I am only thinking of changing Richards since he is injured and i cant really fill any defense next week ( imagine konchesky is injured, dann will come in which will be bad !!! )

However i have refrain myself from taking any point hits this year ( only took 4 to change fab to gerrard 3 weeks ago )

Desperately need Fabregas to be fit for this weekend. I hate the word, but he could be something of a 'differential', especially in my mini league which annoyingly I'm not cruising for once...

Keeping Gerrard for the next two isn't the end of the world. I'm definitely waiting on the Gerrard > Fabregas transfer.

I have seen some weird posts with teams up that have not left enough cash in the bank to get Fabregas back with one transfer, they obviously haven't planned well at all.

No, because if you had others getting injured, you still have to keep an eye on the 'getting Fabs back' situation, and so replace your other injured players accordingly.

For instance, if I had Malouda and 2.5 in the bank, I can get Fabs in one transfer.

But if Crouch got injured, I wouldn't replace him with Chamack as that would use up my Fabregas cash, so I would find a replacement that was equal or cheaper than Crouch.

      Adam by a mile..

Blackpool will score in most games they play, and Adam is more than likely to be involved. And if he is, then he's also more than likely to get bonus points.

Parker and Noble are terrible options, and Wigan don't score enough goals.

Yeah, but Albrighton would obviously just be cheap dirt that rots on your bench and only comes in if you have one of your regulars missing out unexpectedly.

When/if Albrighton gets dropped, you will probably realise this during one of the games that he is on your bench, so then you can take your time to get him out, no rush as he is just a cheap benchie.

it never pays to have a non-starter in your squad. getting a player that you know you will sub out later is also counter-productive. the same reason it is best to stay away from sheamus coleman.

I don't see the point in people having Nani AND Berbatov, surely Nani is enough. Man U haven't been attacking that well of late, and Rooney will be getting in on the act soon, and stealing Berbatov's points - it will just revert to last season.

    1) Hart - N'Zobia - Berbatov or
    2) Krul - Fabregas - Carroll

I think when Rooney not playing Berb feels too much pressure.

He better when Rooney in an taking all the pressure off him

Anyone care about the Commonwealth games? I sure as heck dont... Anyway current team is:

    Foster/Robinson
    Jagielka/Konchesky/Shawcross/Foley/Jara
    Gerrard/Malouda/Bale/Adam/Petrov
    Drogba/Chamkakh/Carroll

Wildcard team MAY look like this:

    O'Shea/Samba/Shawcross/Elmohamady/Jara
    Fabregas/Malouda/N'Zogbia/Adam/Petrov or Etherington?
    Drogba/Tevez/Carroll

    Thoughts? Cheers
