Our Watchlist player rankings have been updated today, reflecting the forthcoming fixtures, current form and recent team selections. You’ll find these tables in your right sidebar on the frontpage.

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that we’ve recently extended our season ticker to six fixtures and this has been reflected in the Watchlist – the next six opponents are now considered when putting these rankings together.

Joe Hart stays on the summit of the Goalkeeper rankings but only just. With three away fixtures in the next four and home games against Arsenal and United, he may need to rely on Save Points to fetch the returns. Newcastle’s Tim Krul offers a very viable and far cheaper alternative; with four home matches in the next six against Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham – the Newcastle stand-in looks to offer exceptional value going into November. Arsenal’s Lucasz Fabianski is a notable new entry, gate-crashing in fourth place in the rankings, the Pole may well be a short-term solution given that Manuel Almunia’s elbow is on the mend, but three “kind” home fixtures in the next four appears to offer strong value if you’re willing to trust a Gunners defence that’s likely to be without Thomas Vermaelen for the foreseeable.

John O’Shea benefits from the return of Rio Ferdinand and the solidity that this brings to Alex Ferguson’s rearguard – this has the Irishman climb to the top of our Defender rankings, surpassing Kolo Toure right now on fixtures with three home games in the next four Gameweeks. Everton’s Leighton Baines is the big climber – his fixtures improve slightly over the next six and he is already displaying form with two assists to his name so far. Newcastle’s Jose Enrique is a big climber just below the Everton left-back; more expensive than Mike Williamson and possibly more secure than the returning Danny Simpson, the Spaniard offers assist potential and a strong alternative to Krul in goal with four home matches in six. Notably climbers include Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz and Sunderland’s Elmohamady who we feel will start delivery attacking points to supplement Sunderland’s defensive returns, despite a harsh run of fixtures to come.

Yet again the Midfield rankings remain pretty steady at the top – United’s Nani and Chelsea’s Florent Malouda holding on to the top two spots, with Fulham’s Clint Dempsey maintaining his position in third thanks to his goal at Upton Park and decent fixtures to come. Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is the big climber and even pips the “bandwagonesque” Rafael Van der Vaart of Spurs. With three home games in four, I feel that Adam offers potential stronger returns over that period as Van der Vaart embarks on away games at Fulham, United and Bolton.

Up front there is also little movement at the top. Dimitar Berbatov’s shock relegation to the bench doesn’t shake my confidence in him ahead of some strong home fixtures, while West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie remains solid in fourth with some decent opponents to come. Andy Carroll holds firm despite being benched at City – I have confidence that he will return to the starting lineup and exploit Newcastle’s kind run of opponents that follow. Bolton’s Johan Elmander and Arsenal’s Marouane Chamakh enjoy climbs with three attractive home games in four to come, despite the lack of form shown by Arsenal’s Moroccan striker.

As always there will be changes to the Watchlist as we near the next Gameweek deadline – Cesc Fabregas and Frank Lampard are almost certain to enter the rankings once we have confirmation of their expected returns. I’ll keep you posted on those and any other notable changes as and when they take place.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

            Fair enough, I am thinking of leaving my defence short in personnel to change up my front 8 also. Another question, what % do you think luck & skill play in FPL? Some here think it's 50-50 which I think is a complete joke.

              90/10 id say. i played for 3 seasons so far, 1st season didnt bother with transfers, 2nd season i had a bet with my mate at xmas whod get most points til the end and i won most months in my league, the last 2 seasons ive had around £600 riding on it both seasons and paid attention and i won my league by over 100pts last year and am 40 ish clear at the moment so id say very much skill

                Thank you tosey, I think it's around 75-80 skill & 20-25 luck. You have obviously proved that planning ahead shows the skill needed rather than following every bandwagon.

                I would say 60 skill, 40 luck, much of the time you can have the best team out on paper week in, week out, and there is just no accounting for luck on the day, Any Given Sunday and all that. You need a bit of luck to win. I would love to get an actuary on this to work out how much exactly they think luck factors in as a percentage here!

                  I'd even say it was more about luck than that. Someone on a lucky season will do better than someone who really knows their stuff but doesn't get the rub of the green. Defenders brought off after 59 mins, missed penalties, etc...you have no control over anything that happens (i.e. you rely on luck) but what you can do is shift the odds in your favour. That's what we do by targetting set piece takers, out of positions, bap darlings etc. It's improving your chances of getting a good score, and after that there's no guarantees.

                  At the end of the day, some guy who hasn't touched their team at all can still have more points than anyone else in the world.

                    The guy coming 1st would be well away from that if Lampard had continued from last season. It's not like his squad was shocking. We all know he won't be there much longer especially if 1 or 2 of his players get injured.

                    There we go, if this or that had happened then he wouldn't be top. But he is, and people have been saying for the last couple of weeks that it won't last for him. We could still be saying the same in GW30.

                  Luck(or BAD luck) plays a big role. I will never forget loading up on double gw players last season. Seldon worked out as i had the wrong players from the double gw teams.

                  Had Faye the one week - he got red in first game and therefor missed the second! A young was my capt in another double gw and he missed penalty and recieved a yellow. Nice.

                  I guess we all have our thoughts on the %'s. When I see the same names in the top 1000, the luck factor just wash with me. Sure last years winner is struggling along with a few others but that % is quite low.

                    Inalize, I took risks last season that didn't pay off. Darren Bent on bench 4 times = big points, Ashley Cole twice = big points. No Lampard til GW38. Those 3 mistakes equal 22K positions.

                    Pasqualinho, I'll have a look into that soon. It's only GW8 so it's so early. Maybe I should have used top 5K as a better point.

                    JU, I just don't believe the 60-40 or 50-50 %s.
                    All you need is the core good scorers and a top 100K position is yours. With all the knowledge on this site, I think everyone here should finish in the top 100K as we all have similiar teams at parts of the season. Captain choice is also a major factor.

                    I didn't do a great deal in the early weeks of last season and when I did make transfers, I only looked at the week ahead. Found this site in Gw12 and rocketed up to 55k by the end of the season. A bit of bad luck in later weeks probably cost me a finish in the top 50k. Following the advice on here got me that far and has given me a good start this year (apart from last week). So I would say 90 skill, 10 luck.

    Right now I'm struggling to decide which of Malouda or Cashley is dropable from my team. The fact is both offer me some returns on funds to buy better throughout the rest of my team. Having Drogba firmly nerstled in my team for now..which player is best to transfer out? Anyone have an opinion for me to consider? I have been thinking Malouda but comments of late suggest otherwise so am pretty uncertain at this point..

    With Cashley out I could potentially make these moves during the course of the gameweeks coming up: Cashley to Samba, Etuhu to Adam, Bale to VDV, Chamakh to Bent, Carroll to Elmander and finally Konchesky to Elmo.

    I can't even begin to imagine what the Malouda sale may offer me in terms of funds and selection options..so what you guys reckon..Cashley or Malouda?

            France are playing at home both matches, Romania on Saturday and the mighty Luxembourg on Tuesday. Hardly a case for Malouda to be rotated when he is in blistering form. Even in a training session with Chelsea he'll break more sweat than against those two.

          I think the rotation concern kicks in cos with Drogba not being available for CL Ancelotti is leaning towards saving his big hitters to compensate for that..however, Drogba will be back soon and that may fall away. The other thing is Carlo is way more comfortable with the team and all the players and has faith in a larger batch of players compared to last year where 1st season pressure forced him to be tight with choices. Include the new youth policy and the fact that its in use and you see why the rotation concern is very apparent. With that said..anything is possible and everything is speculation..the Chelsea 3 have svaed my gameweeks last year and this year and to rid myself of their consistency is a very real concern..but it could be an "eggs in one basket" scenario too..aaa..the ability to think and over think..frustrating!

      Konchesky to be dropped 1st to a cheaper defender
      Chamakh 2nd to Elma or Odem
      Which would give you £`s for Bale/Etuhu >> VdV or Nani maybe
      The Chelsea spine has kept your team in good shape so far keep it !

      I was in the same position last week. I dropped malouda as I also had drogs. Which I see you have so you already have chelsea's attack covered and defence covered with Ashley. Plus I do think he is rotation risk. Kalou's form is just as good and I see those two switching on a regular basis especially with Chelsea completely for all four trophies. Having drog malouda and Ashley is just way too much for one team even if it is Chelsea

            If you're asking me whether you should shift out the current highest point scoring defender in the game or the current highest point scoring midfielder in the game, then I say neither.

            End of the day, every squad is subject to rotation - it's just part of the game. I'm not fussed about fixtures either - the good players will score points regardless. Malouda gets 5 over two games and suddenly it's time to get him out? Don't be silly.

            Twice I've had Fabs in my team only for him to get injured and then had to take him out again. Just not worth the hastle. No-one has him in my main league so I won't be losing out on points and until he proves himself to be 100% fit and constantly playing games, then he won't be gracing my team as there are lots more decent options in MF this year now the squads are settled.

              Its not rotation I'm worried about..its cash to beef up other areas of my squad..Elmander in for Chamakh may help me but I'm not sure if that is a long term choice as someone like Bent (example) surely is better..(Longterm)..I will be considering all views..thanks to everyone who commented..

                Just seen that you have Fabregas?! Surely that's where you can get your funds from - plenty of good value to be had from the midfield this year.

                    The issue isn't about Fabregas>>>>>>>>>Malouda though is it?

                    Currently, Malouda is the current top points scorer in the midfield area and costs 1.5 less than Fabregas. The man wants to raise some cash for his squad and I've said that there is good mid range valued midfielders he could get in like Nani, VDV or Arteta and then have cash to strengthen other areas without having to take out either Cole or Malouda.

                    Not that hard to understand is it?

    I've been wondering: Why is everyone talking about Arteta being all that, and no one mentioning Cahill? He plays closer to the goal for sure, has as many points as Arteta - even having been out for a while, and he costs essentially the same. Should score more goals, no?

    Thoughts on Gohouri vs Alcaraz?

    Gohouri .4 cheaper and think he's hit the bar about 3-4 times already this season. Surely that's offering as much of an attacking threat compared to Alcaraz?

    Has it not been for Alcaraz' quite lucky goal Gohouri would be even more preferred.

    Hi guys

    I saved a free transfer last week and prepare myself with some big reschuffle for next GW.

    I have a number of players I would like to get: Fabregas, Tevez, VdV, and some players I would like to get rid of: Gerrard, Chamack, Bale. Tough thing is to find the optimal combination in order to kill two or three birds in one throw...

    Can some of you advise what looks the best? I will try to give some pros and cons:

    Option 1 "The Big Reschuffle"
    Gerrard + Chamack + Bale > Fabregas + Tevez + Albrigthon/Barton/Ferguson

    + Get Fab and Tevez which are two great long term options
    - Sell Chamack and Bale while they have ok fixtures
    - Is the Tevez/Mancini burst up a risk?
    - 4 pts hit

    Option 2 "The Small Reschuffle"
    Gerrard + Chamack > Fabregas + Bent

    + Get Fab
    - Sell Chamack while he has ok fixtures
    - Cannot really see a lot of reliable strikers below 9m
    - Bent does not have easy games

    Option 3 "The Bandwagon"
    Gerrard + Chamack + Bale > Fabregas + Elmander/Jones + Van der Vaart

    + Get Fab and VdV which are two great long term options
    - Sell Sell Chamack and Bale while they have ok fixtures
    - Next game at Fulham for Spurs does not guarantee that VdV will do better than Bale
    - Does the upgrade Bale to VdV compensate for the downgrade 9m striker to 6m striker...?
    - 4 pts hit

    Option 4 "The Safe Model"
    Gerrard > Fabregas

    + Get Fab
    + Keep a free transfer for later when clearer options
    - Does not solve few of my current issues
    - Not very exciting...

      I think that options 1 and 3 are probably the best.... Gerrard has to go, and Chamakh may not have that much longer in the Arsenal side (RVP will surely be fit soon) so he should probably go too.

      Bent isn't a particularly exciting option. Reliable points scorer, but fixtures aren't great so he's unlikely to get a big score....

      So, at least for me, it comes down to Tevez + Albrighton/Barton vs VDV + Elmander...

      And I'd probably favour the one involving Tevez, with Barton as the midfielder chosen.

    Right... which would you prefer?

    A: O'Shea & Bale

    B: Knight & VDV

    I feel Ferdinand back will make O'Shea more valuable and Bale seems to be better away from home points wise than what VDV is, with Spurs having 3 away games in their next 4. So both those favour option A.

    Option B, O shea has only 1 position now to play for and is a big rotation risk. VDV is taking all bale's glory and should be snapped up quickly as price will continue to rise

      If they use the same system they did to win Boston a Pennant, then they will bounce back...eventually. But it'll take a while, at least until the January window, but years until they're stable again. The 'sabremetric' philosophy they will likely use was documented very well in the book "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis.

      Following some of the guidelines from that wonderful text, I assume they'll sell off a few of the older stars and use the money to bring in a bunch of high impact for the money squad players in their early 20's (think Charlie Adams, Adel Taarabt, Marc Albrighton, etc) and maybe a former star or two in need of regeneration. They can help the troubled stars sort their problems out and get back to winning ways, then sell them off for profits to reinvest elsewhere, or if any of the young squad players rise up to star status, they can sell them off at a profit and reinvest likewise. Liverpool will become the English version of Olympic Lyon - solid but not spectacular performance on the pitch, with sound business practices off it...eventually.

      I read an article that suggested that it would be unlikely he would feature in the rest of October suggesting he would miss 2 premiership games.

      Also there's a link on the home page that suggests Yaya is a doubt for game week 8.

    Pasqualinho, quickly done some figures.

    45 FFS users are in the top 1000.

    18 = New or 500K+ meaning probably started late or gave up.
    6 = 100K+
    2 = 50-100K
    6 = 10-50K (1 team Champoz 5th FFS came 27K last season, top 1K season before)
    6 = 5-10K (1 team here 1033 & 6K last 2 seasons
    6 = 1-5K (2 teams here 2 straight seasons, 12th & 42nd FFS)
    1 = Top 1K (27th FFS, came 611th last season)

    Players like Tosey were 1K til this week.

    Cream normally rises to the top so expect these figures to change quite alot for the top 45 next time I look into them.

              Might indulge myself in the next few days then, I always used to hate how Fifa played back in my PS2 days though, so I don't want to "waste" a couple of scores on it.

                Its very different to the old FIFA's which I used to hate. It plays alot more like a good Pro Evo, in that you really have to work the passing and scoring is difficult. I got it for £30 off Amazon, which seems reasonable

                    The option is 2 or 4 matches, so I'll stick it on 4. Think it ends after that, problem will be getting everyone to play their matches, might have people actually having lives etc (irresponsible tossers 😉 ) who will be murder to pin down.

      The thing I don't get with dentists is: there is no independence in their diagnosis - i.e. they benefit from saying 'oh you need a filling' cos then you have to shell out to them for it. I'm sure half the time you don't really need a filling.

          Inalize, I had root canal (from the quack dentist), and it's a pain because the root supplies blood to the tooth. When they're drilled out, it becomes brittle and can crack (as happened with mine), but then I had a full crown.

          The most painful thing is being fitted for the crown IMO, where they have to force the matrix band around the tooth, into the gums.

          PS, my new dentist is a girl, weird everyone assumes it's a guy.

          Anyway, just booked and it's free 🙂

            Explains why it fell out.

            Sorry, tried to resist.

              Heh, I think she's (at least letters-wise) the most qualified dentist at the practice. And when she leans over you her boobs kind of push in your face. I don't need anesthetic.

            Yeah Soop I agree, i have been having pain around the gum where the band was fitted the last week.

            I'm trying to figure out if the throbbing pain is from where the crown was fitted or where he injected me. anyway, will have to pop home to get some tablets.
