I’ve been toying with the idea of a random news article for a while; a quick mix of opinion and links to stories and events of the last 24-hours. The international break, and the unnerving hush that it brings around the Premier League, offered me the ideal opportunity. Here’s the first set of “Scout Scribbles” then…

So far it appears that Friday’s internationals have passed without any major injury concerns for us Fantasy Managers. Stoke’s Thomas Sorensen did however suffer a recurrence of his ongoing elbow injury which saw him subbed on 32 minutes in the 3-1 defeat to Portugal. Sorensen will be a doubt for Denmark’s qualifier with Cyprus on Tuesday and could also go into Stoke’s trip to Bolton as an injury concern for Tony Pulis. As a side note, Nani continued his sparkling form this season with a brace in that 3-1 win for Portugal.

The Bandwagonesque Rafael Van der Vaart came through 90 minutes for Holland as they ran out 1-0 winners in Moldova. Typically, Van der Vaart provided the assist for Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s winner. His new Fantasy owners will now be looking anxiously to Tuesday’s qualifier with Sweden in Amsterdam and hoping that he can again come through unscathed. Those who have yet to jump on board and have watched his price rise, will be hoping for something very different.

Reports in the Sun this morning, claim that Wes Brown feels that he may be given the elbow at Old Trafford following a pre-season slanging match with Alex Ferguson. Brown has yet to start a Premier League game this season and if there is indeed a rift in place, these latest reports are hardly likely to win him favour with Ferguson. Good news for John O’Shea owners perhaps.

Wes Brown isn’t the only Premier League player set to be victim of a loose lips – Birmingham’s Alexander Hleb is unlikely to benefit from his comments made to the press which were published on Friday. The report offered such gems as…

“In the recent Birmingham games there was a lot of struggle – they were ¬constantly hoofing the long ball forward.”

and

“The Birmingham style is not the kind of game I dreamed about.”

The frustrated St Andrews faithful must have loved that. Alex McLeish meanwhile, will of course deal with that in his own subtle little way I’m sure. He certainly offered little comfort to Hleb in his recent comments on Birmingham’s tactics. According to McLeish, we’re unlikely to see Birmingham shift to 4-4-2 for the foreseeable – apparently they don’t have a player who can make the ball stick up front. Obviously the 6 ft 8 in frame of Nikola Zigic isn’t up to the job; that was many “undisclosed” millions well spent then.

Newcastle have confirmed that Andy Carroll has signed a new 5-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2015. The move follows Carroll’s relegation to the bench at City last time out, a move which obviously broke the patience of some of his Fantasy owners. Carroll has been sold by over 30,000 Fantasy Premier League Managers in the current Gameweek and yet he will face four home matches in the next six, with Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham providing the opponents for those games. Personally, I think they’ll be 30,000+ managers feeling rather regretful over the next few weeks.

Everton are currently running tests on the hamstring injury sustained by Phil Jagielka whilst in training with England on Friday. Jagielka has returned to the club and there are also some “very unconfirmed” reports that he will be sidelined for a number of weeks. Regardless of whether you put any stock in that particular source, it’s clear that Jagielka is a major doubt for Sunday’s Merseyside derby. David Moyes will likely turn to Jonny Heitinga to fill the void alongside Distin in central defence. He will be an able replacement, but Jagielka’s loss would still come as a major blow for Moyes – particularly as his defence was showing promise with just a single goal conceded in the last three.

Heitinga’s shift to defence will relieve the clamour for places in midfield; Moyes’ options here have already been cut here by the recent injury to Steven Pienaar and there are also concerns over Tim Cahill’s availability for Sunday’s game. Cahill will likely start for Australia against Paraguay today, despite worries over a persistent knee problem. All these injuries in midfield could just add up to a prolonged run of starts for Seamus Coleman.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yeah the Bos is on the verge of returning....

He's not guaranteed to start though... Alex and Terry is easily our best centre back combination (also Alex is our best CB and Terry is undroppable) so it will be Ivanovic and Bosingwa slugging it out for the RB role, in most games.

Kolarov or Boateng? Which is your preferred option & why?

Just trying to work out which one to transfer in.
Boateng is the more versatile of the two. However Kolarov bags the occasional goal.

Kolarov longterm, cracking left foot - chance of being on set pieces. Much more attacking threat.

Don't expect Kolarov to get goals. I would however go for him cause of less competition at left back, he is also 0.1 cheaper.

So your a Lazio fan, yah?

Why do you say not to expect goals from him? I thought he has a cracking shot on him, and is handy at set pieces. And loves to get forward.... Seems likely to score more goals than most...

Pretty much watched every game he played the last 3 years yes.

He got 6 goals in 82 matches, some of those on penalties. He does have a cracking shot, but it's mostly power and not precision. What I always found annoying is that he tried to shoot the second he got the ball, no matter where on the field he was.

He will have an advantage at the start though since the GK's won't be ready for his shots. If he gets a goal this season it will no doubt be a beauty.

Wasn't that when football was at its most enjoyable? And look at that for the England team, on one side you have
Ferdinand, Shearer, Beardsley, Batty, Lee, Beresford, Peacock etc. Rare to see so many English players on one top side these days.

            Amir Zaki-esque...

Did I tell you about the time I captained him in week 3 away at Hull, and he got my 32 points? You're relatively new to the site, so you've probably never heard it before.

It's one of my favourite stories, up there with the time when I subbed out both Lampard and Gerrard to afford Ronaldo. Lamps and Stevie G then both scored braces, and Ronaldo (c) ended up with 6 (3x2) points at home to M'Boro.

I also once bought Kalou and he got a brace against 'Boro the very next game. It basically secured my mini-league.

Nice. Yeah I bought Kalou in for that game too... He scored 4 goals that season against the Boro....

Another classic story is when I captained Ryan Taylor.. a couple of weeks after he scored a brace vs Derby (I also had him then)...

Melchiot started at RB, but got injured in the 26th minute, so Taylor came on and nailed the clean sheet points... Of course, this was all before the emergency captain crap, so I was mad when I saw he was on the bench...

No matter what I do I always seem to be 3 or 4 transfers away from my "ideal" team (except straight after WC).

Can anyone on here say, hand on heart, that they currently have their ideal team and don't need to do any tfrs subject to injuries, etc?

If so, I'd like to see that team!

There are always changes and tweaks to be made - all things aside I have a team that I am extremely happy with. Yes the defence is crap but I cant afford a better one so its a risk I am happy to take, just need a slight tweak to get Al Habsi in for Hahnemann, Simpson in for Van Damme and N'Zogbia in for Routledge. Anyway the front seven is one that I am happy with for the foreseeable

      Nani / VdV / Malouda / Fabregas
      Carroll / Drogba / Berbatov

It's all academic though, a couple of injuries and it's all kyboshed.

So you are saying that you ARE 3 or 4 transfers away from your ideal team!

For the record I am 5 away at the moment. Want Fab (for Malouda I think) in once he appears to be up and running, then major overhaul in my defence bringing in Kolarov, Boswinga, Coleman and Elmo, although I will have do do this over the next month hopefully beating price rises of these players.

Like you said, injuries, new bandwagons, etc will derail this anyway!!

No I mean you'll NEVER have an ideal squad once GW1 kicks off. You just have to have enough of your ideal players in key positions and the rest is changeable. I am happy with the seven key players I've listed above - the others are almost incidental - in that I am happy to chop and change them, whereas the seven I would prefer to keep.

It's my favourite TV show right now, but I'm not watching nearly as much as I used to... Lost, 24 and Prison Break finishing has left a massive void in my TV watching schedule..

The first season was the best season of TV I've ever watched, easily. But you're right, after that it tailed off spectacularly..... I still watched it though, out of loyalty.

Yeah, a few friends have recommended Weeds before, but I've never really looked into it... May give it a go, although getting hold of the very first episodes is pretty difficult, at least when not doing it legally....

Lads seriously, I got the lot off Amazon as I'd heard loads of people talking about it. THE best television I have ever seen. Bit hard to follow at first as the dialogue etc with the dealers is so fast, but once you crack it you'll be blown away. Awesome, awesome stuff.

They wrote PB as a 13 episode series from the get go, but then it got so popular that the producers got greedy. You can get the Weeds episodes from a place with the same initials as Prison Break 😉

Exactly the same as Lost - I watched the first series and was quite enjoying it, until I saw an interview with one of the cast where they admitted it was originally written to be three series, but due to the success they were expanding to seven. It was obviously going to be padded to the hilt with shite and nonsense, so didnt arse watching the rest of it.

At least I have Fifa, which is sort of like methadone for a smack addict.

I prefer a good shooter to be honest. I was disappointed with World at War, but MW2 more than made up for it.
You'll like the new fifa, lots of nice extras in it. Like you can be player manager so I'm taking Newcastle to glory as Julio Geordio (you can design your own player).

    Hello,

When Simpson is back is he going to start ahead of Perch?
Also is not having drog and malouda too crazy or should I just get some balls and not have them both?

Simpson should be first choice right back.

It is really crazy to not have any Chelsea attacking players. However alot of people (including myself) have now dropped Malouda since there is so many tempting midfielders currently.

I thought about it. But with the amount of others doing it or thinking about it I'll keep him
