I’ve been toying with the idea of a random news article for a while; a quick mix of opinion and links to stories and events of the last 24-hours. The international break, and the unnerving hush that it brings around the Premier League, offered me the ideal opportunity. Here’s the first set of “Scout Scribbles” then…

So far it appears that Friday’s internationals have passed without any major injury concerns for us Fantasy Managers. Stoke’s Thomas Sorensen did however suffer a recurrence of his ongoing elbow injury which saw him subbed on 32 minutes in the 3-1 defeat to Portugal. Sorensen will be a doubt for Denmark’s qualifier with Cyprus on Tuesday and could also go into Stoke’s trip to Bolton as an injury concern for Tony Pulis. As a side note, Nani continued his sparkling form this season with a brace in that 3-1 win for Portugal.

The Bandwagonesque Rafael Van der Vaart came through 90 minutes for Holland as they ran out 1-0 winners in Moldova. Typically, Van der Vaart provided the assist for Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s winner. His new Fantasy owners will now be looking anxiously to Tuesday’s qualifier with Sweden in Amsterdam and hoping that he can again come through unscathed. Those who have yet to jump on board and have watched his price rise, will be hoping for something very different.

Reports in the Sun this morning, claim that Wes Brown feels that he may be given the elbow at Old Trafford following a pre-season slanging match with Alex Ferguson. Brown has yet to start a Premier League game this season and if there is indeed a rift in place, these latest reports are hardly likely to win him favour with Ferguson. Good news for John O’Shea owners perhaps.

Wes Brown isn’t the only Premier League player set to be victim of a loose lips – Birmingham’s Alexander Hleb is unlikely to benefit from his comments made to the press which were published on Friday. The report offered such gems as…

“In the recent Birmingham games there was a lot of struggle – they were ¬constantly hoofing the long ball forward.”

and

“The Birmingham style is not the kind of game I dreamed about.”

The frustrated St Andrews faithful must have loved that. Alex McLeish meanwhile, will of course deal with that in his own subtle little way I’m sure. He certainly offered little comfort to Hleb in his recent comments on Birmingham’s tactics. According to McLeish, we’re unlikely to see Birmingham shift to 4-4-2 for the foreseeable – apparently they don’t have a player who can make the ball stick up front. Obviously the 6 ft 8 in frame of Nikola Zigic isn’t up to the job; that was many “undisclosed” millions well spent then.

Newcastle have confirmed that Andy Carroll has signed a new 5-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2015. The move follows Carroll’s relegation to the bench at City last time out, a move which obviously broke the patience of some of his Fantasy owners. Carroll has been sold by over 30,000 Fantasy Premier League Managers in the current Gameweek and yet he will face four home matches in the next six, with Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham providing the opponents for those games. Personally, I think they’ll be 30,000+ managers feeling rather regretful over the next few weeks.

Everton are currently running tests on the hamstring injury sustained by Phil Jagielka whilst in training with England on Friday. Jagielka has returned to the club and there are also some “very unconfirmed” reports that he will be sidelined for a number of weeks. Regardless of whether you put any stock in that particular source, it’s clear that Jagielka is a major doubt for Sunday’s Merseyside derby. David Moyes will likely turn to Jonny Heitinga to fill the void alongside Distin in central defence. He will be an able replacement, but Jagielka’s loss would still come as a major blow for Moyes – particularly as his defence was showing promise with just a single goal conceded in the last three.

Heitinga’s shift to defence will relieve the clamour for places in midfield; Moyes’ options here have already been cut here by the recent injury to Steven Pienaar and there are also concerns over Tim Cahill’s availability for Sunday’s game. Cahill will likely start for Australia against Paraguay today, despite worries over a persistent knee problem. All these injuries in midfield could just add up to a prolonged run of starts for Seamus Coleman.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Right- while we're not talking football, anyone want to put forward their favourite film monologues of all time? I'll kick off with morgan freeman when he goes in front of the parole panel in shawshank...

I know it's not a monologue but the Pacino/De Niro cafe scene in Heat is one of the best scenes in any film IMO.

it's really a shame they didn't have more of Ed Tom Bell in the film. There's some absolutely brilliant stuff from him in the book that the Coen bros cut to focus on the main plot.

I just check for films I've not seen before on IMDB's Top 250. I've only seen just over half of 'em, which in a way I'm pleased about. Would be quite sad if I'd seen arguably the best 250 films ever.

I've always been a bit sceptical about imdb's top 250, as with anything voted for by the masses it always seems to gravitate towards "big" new films (admittedly they usually sink further towards the bottom)

Another amazing movie to check out is : "Wings of Desire" by Wim Wenders. Again, Hollywood tried a pathetic adaptation of a true European classic movie (City of Angels with Nic Cage ...crap) " The sky over Wender's war-scarred Berlin is full of gentle, trenchcoated angels who listen to the tortured thoughts of mortals and try and comfort them."

Essential players are worth taking hits for. Like when Fabregas scores alot of points against Birmingham next saturday everyone will get him in their team. 🙂

Since he is so expensive and no one have any 10+ midfielders point hits is needed.

I rarely take hits. I'm just saying some weeks selling 2/3 players who have bad fixtures, form or injuries & getting 2/3 new players with better form, rising value & good fixtures is just like a mini wildcard. I might be doing something like that this week. The gained points by the new players will easily cover the hit sometimes in the 1st week.

I don't like point hits either. I've only used it once this season and that was to get Tevez in. Even though I want to get Krul, Cesc and VDV in over the next few weeks, I'm doing Krul->Hart this week, Malouda->Fab next week then get VDV in the week after. No hits needed

Yeah I didn't make hits and now I regret. I wan it t odo hit for Adam against Liv and bench Carrol, didn't do it. I wan it to make hit for VDV against Wolves and look what happened, how many points I've missed. After all after some period of time i am gonna put both of them in my team and I will pay 0.6-0.7 more in order to afford them., Thats is real cash and is much. Huge difference can be later in the season. So maybe that GW I would have 4 point minus but midterm and longterm especially I would make profit and points. So it depends who u will get for those hits. If I made a hit and bought Hleb that would be a bad call. So I am for point hits but really depends who the new player is, especially at the beginning of the season when we are gaining cash.

Only a no brainer if you wont be able to field a full 11.

My policy is also not to take any hits. Obviously it wont always work, but its the same both ways, the player you bring in isn't guaranteed to get you those points back. I'd rather have the points in the bag already.

Seeing you bought Torres, Gerrard, N'zogbia & Odemwingle who scored 21 between them including Torres as captain vs the 4 players you sold who scored 7 between them I think, I don't see what you can complain about. Scoring 38-12 was the problem for the red arrow meaning the rest of your squad struggled.

Hits are fine if they work. It's a gamble really, if you take a four point hit and the player you bring in scores at least 4pts more than the player you took out (or any on bench) then of course it's a good move. If he scores 10pts more it's a big winner, if he only scores 4pts more it's a free transfer. Of course he may score less but even then, may justify it the following week. Any more than 8pts is very unlikely to pay off in the short term though.

Risk. Fabregas isn't certain to start. Even if he does, will he be 100%? We saw before it took him a few games to get back to his normal self. I will possibly wait another week, see how he performs in his first week OR bring him in without a hit.

I would not take a hit to bring him in.

You need to take a long hard look at Fabregas' stats at The Emirates last season.

The only way Fabregas could get 4 points or less (assuming he starts and doesn't get hauled off early due to injury) would be for Arsenal to lose.

Keep in mind everyone: its not necessarily Fabs were questioning, but the crazy-go-nuts managering of Wenger. Who knows how long it will be until that crackpot wants cesc to play even 60.

Seriously, doing this is like bringing in Torres last week: way too much of a risk to be worth it.

To benefit, the new player will probably need to get at least 6 points, assuming that the player you take out gets 2 points in that gameweek. 6 points + is quite a lot to ask imo.

you got the whole season (or until your next WC) to make up the 4pts... its not just the following GW that counts... budget also plays in. its not a simple calculation

              Yes.

              If:

(average points gain per transfer) x (number of weeks until WC or end of season) > 4

              you win.

The limiting factor is the number of "good" transfers you can make each week, which is why 4 pt hits generally pay off better than 12 pters.

strictly speaking. you would have to add/substract points the subs would or would not have made + point gained/lost as a result of your budget changing, as well... something for supercomputers

Last year's winner took 4 point hits on 7 occasions, but never took any larger hits.
So try to resist taking unnecessary hits, but don't rule them out completely.
Incidently, it isn't quite true that noone has any other 10+ midfielders - I still have Stevie G, and he may well outscore Fabs in GW9 when Arsenal are away to City.

Danny Murphy is a prize c*ck! Blackburn may play sh*t football at times but they are not a dirty team. After 7 games they have 11 yellows and no reds. Hardly blatant thuggery. Arsenal have 12 yellows and 2 reds in same period!

You don't think Blackburn are a dirty team?

Do you own a pair of eyes?

Blackburn aren't as bad as Stoke, Wolves or Bolton in terms of dirtiness, but they do employ El Hadj Diouf and Vince Grella.

I have to admit, when Arsenal went to Blackburn this season, it was a pretty clean game.

Going back to the Fabregas topic...

Is it worth doing Arshavin->Fabregas for free? (in the below team)

    Foster, Jaask

    Alex*, Koncheskey, Elmohamady, Gohouri, Givet

    Arshavin, Malouda, Bale, Toure, Albrighton

    Drogba, Tevez, Carroll

    * Also a worry, potential transfer, although if he will only miss avl, I'll probably keep him.

Early days regarding my rank. Gerrard is out this week regardless. I need 2 trades to get Fabregas in & there are many combinations I can do with my team including 3 trades & a 4 point hit. A key injury to a common player this week might make the decision easier.

What did Dexter do with the guy he killed with the anchor? That guy was innocent: doesn't dexter even reflect upon his actions? The fact that he hasn't goes against his character.

Also, He isn't even worried about the Mitchell family, which is a big BIG problem for him right now. He's just fine with them being in FBI custody.

On top of all this, he is hunting. Rather than try to protect himself from the epic amount of trouble hes in right now, he's just continuing to hunt.

Fabs tweeted on Tuesday (I think) that he was fully fit, so that's 12 days before the Birmingham game....

Plus Arsenal are in no position to take any chances in the league, especially after being so poor without Fabs (2 goals scored, 6 conceded in the league).. If Fabs does need some rest then I'd imagine that it will come against Shakhtar in the week, as Arsenal are pretty comfortable in their CL group..

Would love to have Fabs for BHM, however loathe to drop Tevez to fund the transfer when he is up against Blackpool.

Also think Fabs will score low points in the next gameweek away to Man City. Therefore sitting back and looking to add in GW10

I'm with you. Just because Fabs is fit doesn't mean crazy Wenger will play him. surely Fabs was ready for GW1-3, and he was still on the bench. I can't think Wenger is all that worried about Brum at home.

Why is it worth the risk? The last time people took a punt on fabs before he had recovered he got them a single point.

Fabregas and Wenger have both said that he is 'fully fit', this was definitely not the case at the start of the season.

Why is it worth the 'risk'? I dunno, perhaps because they haven't won in three in the league and lost their last home game to West Brom without him.

Provided he doesn't get hit by a bus or mauled by a Rottweiler, Fabs will start against Birmingham and will play the majority of the game.

Wenger totally said Fabs was fit week one, but that he didn't want to play him....for the following 3 weeks. Its totally within the realm of belief to think Fabs will play less than 30 at the end of the game if they need it. Yes, their league results have been mediocre, but do they really look desperate? Not enough for someone as cautious as Wenger to risk something like this.

Again, I'm not saying Fabs won't play 90, I'm saying its still really unlikely.

Wenger wouldn't shut up about how Fabs and RVP weren't fully fit at the start of the season, and it was no surprise whatsoever when they didn't start either of the first two games. Although Fabs did miss the first game through illness, not because of a World Cup hangover...

'I'm fit and training with the team. If the game was today i could have played, but it was 2 days too short and didnt want to take a gamble.'

From Fabregas' official twitter page on Tuesday... Seem pretty obvious that he is going to be able to play against Birmingham.

He totally said he was ready to play the full game against Blackpool. This is nearly one month after World cup, and after several weeks of practicing with the team. This is really the same level of fitness were talking about here, and people were just as confident week 2 that he was going to play.

They came back on August 5 and you need three to four weeks preparation if you want to do well in the Premier League.”

I'm considering Mal>Fabs on free transfer this week, but am nervous that Wenger may not start Fabs/play him a lot of minutes. He tends to avoid risks that may have long term consequences. ARS should beat BIR w/o Fabs. On the other hand, Carlo might rest Malouda, so I could be screwed either way. I'll probably wait until the last minute to see if there's any indications of the two coaches' thinking.

No problem, I see you have done well in past seasons too. I am about 70-30 on getting Fabs this week. I have similar thought s to you but if they are wrong then it could be a big difference in scoring.

            Robinson (Foster)

            Williamson O'Shea Elmo (konchesky Foley)

            Malouda Nani Dempsey Gerrard (etuhu)

            Tevez Drogba Caroll

Have to take a 4 point hit to get Fabs in this week. Or I get in VDV for Gerrard this week and wait until GW10 to get Fabs in when I have 2 free transfers.

Either Dempsey down to Adam/Etherington and Gerrard to Fabs.

Or Konchesky to Coleman and Gerrard to Fabs.

            What do you reckon?

Hmmm... That's pretty tough tbh... Like I said, I'd rather get Fabregas in ASAP, but I'm still not convinced by Coleman, and I wouldn't particularly want to get rid of Dempsey, although I think that is your best option... Petrov is another good option around that price bracket (3 home games in 4)..

I'm not interested in Petrov. Had him already and isn't scoring enough for me. I'd rather have Etherington or Adam. Long term I think I have to get rid of Dempsey.

I think I may do the Coleman and Fabs transfer and keep Dempsey for a few more weeks. He has nice fixtures. Then do Dempsey to adam/Etherington and Upgrade Coleman to Kolarov.

Looking at the stats, Petrov takes alot of corners. Think he will soon start to become a more regular decent points scorer.

But it's not as though Everton have any good fixtures, and Coleman is by no means guaranteed to start...

Demspey > Adam isn't a bad move, and easily allows you to afford Cesc.

True, but Coleman could be backup.

Im happy playing O'Shea Williamson and Elmo. All 3 have pretty good fixtures for 3 weeks and that means I can have Fabs and Dempsey. Get rid of Dempsey in 3 weeks and then upgrade Coleman to Kolarov assuming he is getting starts.

Or do you still think I should downgrade Dempsey now?

That's a good point, you can easily play O'Shea Elmo and Williamson for three weeks, with Coleman as back up... I'd go with that plan... Dempsey doesn't really deserve to be dropped.

I'm sat right next to the modem, but it keeps coming up with this sort of nonsense
'unable to connect to DNS server' or some similar jibberish. Everything in Ireland is mentally expensive but the price of broadband is nothing short of ridiculous. Especially as the government keep touting it as a "smart and high tech economy"

Nah, how close you are to the modem shouldn't really matter unless you live in an mansion or something. But thick walls etc can mess with your signal.

Of course if you are sitting close as you say you are then there's other problems.

I'm not an expert but I've had problems with DNS servers when running through XBOX live on my BT modem at home before. I can't remember when it's to do with but I'm pretty sure it cleared with a simple off for 60 seconds and back on again

Next problem for this week - captain choice!

    Nani vs West Brom (H)

    Fabs vs Birmingham (H)

    Tevez vs Blackpool (A)

    Drogba vs Villa (A)

I was originally always going for Tevez but now Im thinking Nani or Fabs. Fabs is back from injury but as Jamsiep has pointed out has said he was fit on tues. Arsenal are due a big win.

Nani has been playing well and again in the international but would have played 2 internationals before the next Utd game?

Tough choice (guess not for some people - Fabs ftw?)

I was the only person to have Fabs in my mini league once he got over his first injury. This time I know at least one other person already has him but I think he will be the only one so I'm definitely getting him (as per our other conversation).

But keeping faith with Dempsey for now!

Thanks guys for putting me off.
I thought Konch was a possibility to fall but according to TM's site he isnt.
Yeah about the Wigan def, agree thats not the best idea....
In terms of pressing transfers Im really confused as to what I should do. I want Tevez in but, I need to raise cash in other areas...

I doubt you can get Tevez in this week without some major hits so maybe thats more a long term thing.

          Any money in the bank?

I'd downgrade some defenders to 4.0-4.5m. Williamson Elmo and Foley are the ones I use with Foley someone I always set as last sub.

Might be an idea to get players who score points to improve that rank rather than changing defenders. I wouldn't pay 80 million for that FPL team.

I think its a nice midfield and strikeforce (once you get rid of Chamakh). The defence probably has too much money in it for the players you have.

        1. Disagree. Early transfers are a risk but can pay off handsomely and can help your transfer fund.
        2. Wigan are improving and good value
        3. You could do with a boost, play your wildcard asap as your team is well out of contention at the mo.

Well as I cant sleep and it's pretty quiet on here and people are always happy to give there opinion.

Next gameweek barring injuries Im planning on doing Etuhu ---> Albrighton. Albrighton would be a good rotation with Caroll do you think?

Where is he playing for Villa, right wing? Is he likely to keep starting?

Houllier playing him now he has officially taken over is a good sign. Will likely depend on his preferred formation for Villa, as if Young switches back to the wing, could mean Downing on the other flank.

See its a gamble, you either go route one - sod the defence - and cram everything into midfield and attack, or you go route two - defence IS important - and include the odd Ashley Cole or Kolarov. For a budget player I've been delighted with Elmo's potential

Well i still have Cole and Toure at the moment, i owuld normally have a better defense but the way this season is going its not worth spending alot, i may even downgrade Toure yet? On WC so no hits. You haven't spent much on defense and it seems to be going good for you..

The last two weeks have been poor though, whereas those with good defences did well. I'd look to downgrade Toure to Boateng initally and later Kolarov. They play for Man City too so no loss there, but they carry more of an attacking potential.

I'm saving the wildcard in case of a resurgent Frank Lampard. As I said earlier, using it before seems to me to be comparable to a general committing all his reserves in battle and blithly ignoring the 20,000 enemies behind him. Risky biscuit.

I use the 'Notes' section to plan transfers. Have a decent plan until around gw 12. But something is screwing me over:

Last friday night, I was thinking thinking 'Chamakh - Torres or Tevez'

I decided on Tevez, clicked to make the transfer and BAM, prices change.

If I had made the transfer a minute earlier, I would have 3.2 in the bank as oppose to 3.0.

I just know that will come back to haunt me.

More Beckham freekicks and Andy Cole toebungers than I can shake a stick at. Didn't enjoy seeing number 3 again, but number 1 was something else.
Diego Forlan featured a lot more than I thought he would

As much as I despise United Rooney's @ 3 is my personal fave.

Although there's a better shot of him complaining to the ref, breaks away then hits it. Great goal.

Do abit of reason. If they weren't dangerous, no-one wouldn't care about them & would kill/play with them easily.

I think it might be an advantage for me actually. Price changes occur around 11-12am here & lockout is around 8.30pm so I can't complain about it. Not everyone trades late etc apart from me so the time difference is pretty insignificant to many except those that have lockout at 3-4am I guess.

I'm a Rovers fan, and I'm going to recommend playing Elmohamady.

Our attack is practically non-existent, and recently, we haven't looked particularly good at the back. I fancy Elmo to get an assist here, and maybe a clean sheet seeing as Rovers can't score except from set pieces. He's also a midfielder, and for me, he's practically undroppable because of how OoP he is.

I'm playing both Samba and Elmo this week, because I reckon they'll be at least one clean sheet there, and maybe even a 0-0 which would be fantastic for FF but pretty bad for Rovers. We really need to start scoring...

    G'day all:

All of a sudden, a plethora of golden ubercheaps to choose from. Which 5 would you select from these:

Da Costa WHM 4.8 - great fix
Gohouri WIG 4.0 - cheap and good fix, place under threat?
Alcaraz WIG 4.4 - good fix, set piece threat
    ShawX STK 4.8 - abps
Salcido FUL 5.0 - abps, assist potential, fix
Dann BIR 4.7 - good fix, goal threat
Enrique NEW 4.5 - great fix and assist potential
Mumster SUN 4.7 - poor fix but OOP
Samba BLB 5.1 - fix, goal threat
Jones BLB 4.6 - bps, good fix

    Anyone else under 5.0

    Gks from BLB and BOL

    Cheers!

I will start by saying you should definitely go for Elmohamady which leaves you with 4 from the list. I also wouldn't double up on BLB so that'd rule out Samba and Jones.

WHM have good fixtures, is Da Costa the best option? Jacobsen is cheaper? I haven't seen much of WHM though. Fill me in as I have been considering Jacobsen?

I have Gohouri, he's safe imo.

The rest though, depends on how much you want to spend at the back.

Thanks Lew - great stuff as usual!

Da Costa has played the last 3 WHM games during which time he has 1 cs, 2 bps and the most goal attempts (2/3 on target). He is the most expensive WHM def. Have a look at his Optas.

Gohouri - according to the team news, Caldwell, the club skipper is due back this weekend. Who will he replace? I thought Gohouri was the most vulnerable?

Like Mumster too. Agree on the BLB double up.

All options considered at these prices.

Hi jaf, With those keepers I think the best of that lot are mumster, enrique, dann, salcido & shawx/da costa. Really all depends on how their fixtures rotate though and that should probably be your main guideline in deciding who to pick.

        Yes good point there, Champ.

I only play 3 and they have to rotate well together.
As I'm playing the wildcard, I want to get this right as I don't want to make defender transfers if I have to.

I have to say that I pretty much agree with your selections. WIG have good fix though and Gohouri looks the best 4.0 option out there if he is guaranteed starts. Certainly better than Foley and Jara.

Da Costa has great fix and it's hard to decide between him, ShawX and Gohouri/Alcaraz.

I'd be tempted to go Dann to Carr to save the 0.3. Both had the same number of assists last year and neither scored. Depends if you can use the 0.3 elsewhere.

Getting your excuses in early I see. Not registered from CAR? What difference does that make?

Ah right, that front 8 sounds good, similar to what I'm doing although I'm not sacrificing my defence.

It's important when they send the winning prize & see CAR is not my place of residence. FPL will give the prize to 2nd place & it would cause a scandal. I'll have to blame Akers & FFS would get involved. Easier letting someone else win. 😉

Sacre bleu! You could donate your prize to an actual CARite?

Prizes aren't transferrable. I couldn't even use EBAY. No CAR for next season for me. It's not like I am needed.

It depends on if my last midfielder is Arteta or Walcott for the home fixtures, at the moment its Hart, Alex, O Shea, Konchesky, Faye and Jones but if I go Arteta then Alex has to become Bosingwa or Kolorov and Konchesky will be Coleman.

With Hart, Kolorov/Bosingwa and O Shea fixtures in my side then ill only need to rotate the other 3 for one spot.

A midfield of Malouda, Fabregas, Nani, Arteta and Adam will be in for GW 10 when Everton and Arsenal ease up.

Thanks Shhh. Dann has already notched though. Seems to more of a threat at set pieces.

Are BIR on the slide though?

        Elmohamady, Enrique, Alcaraz, Dann, Salcido.

Check the rotation, but if memory serves, this defense rotates great.

Cheers Camz - that is pretty much how I'm thinking as well. Not too sure about Alcaraz or Gohouri? Is Gohouri guaranteed starts? If not ShawX is v good value at 4.8.

I've been in a very similar situation this week,
on the face of it Gerrard -> Fabs is a no-brainer (and was the only t/f I was seriously contemplating) though now I'm thinking maybe it wouldn't be so crazy to leave Gerrard in for one more GW. There's always a chance that Cesc will only get 30ish mins first time back, and Stevie G's always a danger against Eve.

      Toughy...

There is no danger of Cesc only getting 30 mins at all, where did you guess that theory from?

He just missed out on the Chelsea game, there are two weeks in between games, Arsenal have had two poor results, what on earth gives you the impression that he will only play 30?
