I’ve been toying with the idea of a random news article for a while; a quick mix of opinion and links to stories and events of the last 24-hours. The international break, and the unnerving hush that it brings around the Premier League, offered me the ideal opportunity. Here’s the first set of “Scout Scribbles” then…

So far it appears that Friday’s internationals have passed without any major injury concerns for us Fantasy Managers. Stoke’s Thomas Sorensen did however suffer a recurrence of his ongoing elbow injury which saw him subbed on 32 minutes in the 3-1 defeat to Portugal. Sorensen will be a doubt for Denmark’s qualifier with Cyprus on Tuesday and could also go into Stoke’s trip to Bolton as an injury concern for Tony Pulis. As a side note, Nani continued his sparkling form this season with a brace in that 3-1 win for Portugal.

The Bandwagonesque Rafael Van der Vaart came through 90 minutes for Holland as they ran out 1-0 winners in Moldova. Typically, Van der Vaart provided the assist for Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s winner. His new Fantasy owners will now be looking anxiously to Tuesday’s qualifier with Sweden in Amsterdam and hoping that he can again come through unscathed. Those who have yet to jump on board and have watched his price rise, will be hoping for something very different.

Reports in the Sun this morning, claim that Wes Brown feels that he may be given the elbow at Old Trafford following a pre-season slanging match with Alex Ferguson. Brown has yet to start a Premier League game this season and if there is indeed a rift in place, these latest reports are hardly likely to win him favour with Ferguson. Good news for John O’Shea owners perhaps.

Wes Brown isn’t the only Premier League player set to be victim of a loose lips – Birmingham’s Alexander Hleb is unlikely to benefit from his comments made to the press which were published on Friday. The report offered such gems as…

“In the recent Birmingham games there was a lot of struggle – they were ¬constantly hoofing the long ball forward.â€

and

“The Birmingham style is not the kind of game I dreamed about.â€

The frustrated St Andrews faithful must have loved that. Alex McLeish meanwhile, will of course deal with that in his own subtle little way I’m sure. He certainly offered little comfort to Hleb in his recent comments on Birmingham’s tactics. According to McLeish, we’re unlikely to see Birmingham shift to 4-4-2 for the foreseeable – apparently they don’t have a player who can make the ball stick up front. Obviously the 6 ft 8 in frame of Nikola Zigic isn’t up to the job; that was many “undisclosed†millions well spent then.

Newcastle have confirmed that Andy Carroll has signed a new 5-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2015. The move follows Carroll’s relegation to the bench at City last time out, a move which obviously broke the patience of some of his Fantasy owners. Carroll has been sold by over 30,000 Fantasy Premier League Managers in the current Gameweek and yet he will face four home matches in the next six, with Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham providing the opponents for those games. Personally, I think they’ll be 30,000+ managers feeling rather regretful over the next few weeks.

Everton are currently running tests on the hamstring injury sustained by Phil Jagielka whilst in training with England on Friday. Jagielka has returned to the club and there are also some “very unconfirmed†reports that he will be sidelined for a number of weeks. Regardless of whether you put any stock in that particular source, it’s clear that Jagielka is a major doubt for Sunday’s Merseyside derby. David Moyes will likely turn to Jonny Heitinga to fill the void alongside Distin in central defence. He will be an able replacement, but Jagielka’s loss would still come as a major blow for Moyes – particularly as his defence was showing promise with just a single goal conceded in the last three.

Heitinga’s shift to defence will relieve the clamour for places in midfield; Moyes’ options here have already been cut here by the recent injury to Steven Pienaar and there are also concerns over Tim Cahill’s availability for Sunday’s game. Cahill will likely start for Australia against Paraguay today, despite worries over a persistent knee problem. All these injuries in midfield could just add up to a prolonged run of starts for Seamus Coleman.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Damn you fantasy football with your never ending choices!

    Do I fix up a defense that's more than a little bit shaky, or do I try to get the FabMan in by GW 10? And if I go for Fabs, who do I drop?

    I'm not normally a praying man, but if you're up there, please save me, Superman!

      You need Arsenal coverage in there, so basically it is the difficult decision of removing Nani, Malouda or Tevez to facilitate it. The big debate also rages on as to whether Fabs should be transferred in this week or in gw10, but my bank balance may not dictate a wait.

        And if you have Drogba, I would tentatively suggest Malouda > Fabregas. You then have the key points scorers for Arsensal, United and Chelsea...

          Yeah - that's what I was thinking...I guess I was just hoping to be able to keep Malouda, but maybe it's time to let him go... *sniff

          So then the next dilemma...whether to bring in Fabs for Malouda this week? But since that question has been asked around 1,000,000 times I won't ask it...

          ...but if anyone wants to give an opinion on it I guess i can't stop you... 😉

        My defence is definitely in need of surgery (or putting down):

        Konchesky/Williamson/Shawcross/Foley/Dann

        Fixtures are right against Stoke, Wolves and Birmingham and I also have Krul/Foster between the sticks.

        About £9.9m to shift at least two of those - I'm not sure I have got the patience with Konchesky to wait either for his return from injury or a Liverpool cleansheet.

        Stoke also have a horrendous run of fixtures on the cards and I am thinking of binning Shawcross.

        Not too worried about Foley with me regularly going 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.

        I don't want Alcaraz; eyeing up Elmo. What do you reckon?

          Tevez --> Bent is serious consideration for me.

          Means I could have a midfield of

          Adam VDV Nani Fabs Malouda

              Very.

              I'm holding out too, Blackpool this week for Tevez so surely he will do something.

              I thought about removing him (in a few weeks) earlier on this week in fact. This just helps me out a little more

        Torres>Odemwingie
        Foley>Elmo

            To be honest, Fabregas is the main man in midfield that you want to be worrying about supplying funds for. At the moment Malouda is a suitable alternative to Lamps anyway.

            if i were you i would give him a few weeks to see how he does. he was getting comprehensively outscored by malouda before he was injured and is still a very expensive option. fabregas is better value for your money if you dont have him imo.

            I didn't realise until just checking that Malouda has scored the same amount of goals as Drogba this season so far. I knew he was close but thought he was 1 or 2 behind. Not sure why people are thinking about getting rid. If its for Fabs then maybe you have a point.

            I myself have toyed with the idea but no chance I'm getting rid of Malouda unless he gets injured or is involved in major rotation

              In the interest of balance, I'd just like to point out that those goals came in the following games: West Brom (H), Wigan (A), Stoke (H) and Blackpool (H).... since he got rested for West Ham (A), and has drawn a blank in the 2 toughest games so far- against City (A) and Arsenal (H)- it's difficult to work out how consistent a points-scorer he's going to be.

              I'd love to keep him and find out, however Fabregas is calling me...

            Tevez (£10.7m) or Berbatov (£9.2m)??

            Have Tevez at the moment but thinking that a swap to Berbs may be more profitable over the next few weeks, particularly as I need to inject a little cash into my defence.

              Another one of those tough choices!

              I have Tevez and am not really considering Berbatov as an alternative at the moment. Probably as a UTD fan I'm a bit bias, I hate the fact that Berbatov is doing well while ROoney struggles.

              I don't believe it will be long until Rooney starts firing and Berbatov takes a back seat. I think he will still score points but not as highly as he has been.

              If its just for the next few weeks then maybe it's worth a punt

                  Yeah definitely. You've given me a dilemma now.

                  I was originally getting Fabs in by going

                  Gerrard--->Fabs
                  Konchesky---> Knight.

                  I could go Tevez--->Berbatov and Gerrard ---> Fabs.

                  But I just think it's worth keeping Tevez one more week at least for the Blackpool game. Utd do have some nice fixtures coming up though...

            My team at the moment is;

            Robinson, Foster
            Elmo, A. Cole, Konchesky, Jara, Dann
            Bale, Davies, Yaya Toure, Gerrard, Demspey
            Drogba, Carrol, Tevez

            I'm thinking of using my WC to sort out my midfield doing the following transfers;

            Davies -> Adam
            Yaya Toure -> N'Zogbia
            Gerrard -> Fabregas
            Jara - Coleman

            Is it worth using my WC, or should I just do Gerrard + Davies for Fabs + Adam and take a 4 point hit?

                I agree with needing Man Utd coverage...but i'm really not a fan of Nani and none of their other midfielders appeal either. I guess the other option is Tevez to Berbs, but i'm happy with my forward line at the moment. I think it's more essential to have Arsenal coverage (Fabregas) than Man Utd coverage.

                  I agree Nani is a tool but i think he will get points and I also think he will rise in value. I'm going for Arsenal coverage for game week 10.

                  so yes you could do
                  Tevez> Berbatov
                  Gerrard > Fabreags

                  I'm ditching tevez after this game week
