Florent Malouda’s starting berth gets secured by Salomon Kalou’s troubles. Andy Carroll shuffles into the frame for a recall to a Newcastle 4-4-2 and Roberto Martinez singles out Jordi Gomez for praise, the latest budget midfielder to offer potential from the “in the hole” role.

Yesterday’s statement from Chelsea on Yossi Benayoun brought the shocking news that the Israeli will be out for six months with his Achilles injury, but it also included a significant update on Salomon Kalou’s fitness which has a big impact on the outlook of Florent Malouda this weekend.

According to Chelsea’s statement Kalou is “due to return to full training next week”, ruling him out of this weekend’s trip to Villa Park. With both Kalou and Benayoun out of the equation, it would seem that Malouda is now far more assured of his start on the left flank, despite facing a Champions League tie on Tuesday.

Previously Malouda was rested for the trip to West Ham which preceded the Champions League meet with MSK Zilina. Many Fantasy Managers will have been looking closely at Malouda’s prospects given that Cesc Fabregas is back in the frame as a heavyweight midfield option. The Chelsea man’s fixtures show three away games in four, compared to Fabregas’ three in four at the Emirates. The fact that Malouda also faced the threat of rotation also counted against him; Kalou’s continued absence appears to have reduced that risk considerably.

There’s some interesting noises coming out of St James’ Park today with reports suggesting that Chris Hughton is considering opting for a 4-4-2 against Wigan. There remains question marks over Andy Carroll’s chances of starting at the weekend given that he was left on the bench at City by Hughton. To my mind Carroll will start, with Hughton today stating that the centre-forward is “buoyed” by signing his new five-year contract at the club; the suggestion is that he will be paired with Shola Ameobi with skipper Kevin Nolan perhaps reverting to a deeper central midfield role.

This will have obvious repercussions on Nolan’s potential but also hopefully improve Carroll’s output in what would appear to be a Newcastle side with a greater attacking threat. The flipside of that of course is that Hughton will have to remove one of his midfield protectors to make way for Nolan’s shift back into the engine room. That could leave Newcastle’s defence, impressive to this point, exposed that little bit more.

Staying with Newcastle, it’s interesting to note that Danny Simpson played 90 minutes for the reserves last night – more or less confirming that he won’t be involved against Wigan. Danny Guthrie played no part though – presumably he will return to the first-team squad and will add to Hughton’s options in midfield. It’s getting trickier to predict Hughton’s lineup.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has today lauded the impact of Jordi Gomez against Wolves and indicated that he is in the box seat for the advanced midfield role playing just off the striker.

“We have created a very good competition for places throughout the squad and the team. But it’s important we use our players when they are in good moments of form – and that certainly applies to Jordi right now.”

Gomez has scored three goals in three starts for Wigan this term, two of which have come in the Carling Cup. He was on target against Wolves in Gameweek 7 however and our recent Members article revealed he put in a highly impressive shift – only Rafael Van der Vaart fired in more efforts on goal in the league over that weekend. Gomez’ free-kick strike against McCarthy’s side should certainly give him the opportunity to hog Wigan’s set-plays. At 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Gomez may warrant some Watchlist attention over Wigan’s kind fixtures if you’re looking for a budget option in midfield.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Great to see Malouda is secure, for now...

Dont feel as concerned about making a swap with fabregas now, will at least leave it till next week, its not like birmingham are a poor opposition.

    Good write-up

But if I may add the main concern for Malouda is about the Wolves game and as I can see Kalou will be fit for that game.

To be fair AP (and its not often I'm fair to Jamsie P) I was under the impression from him and the rest of his Malouda transferring cronies that they believed he would play against Villa and be rested against Wolves. In their opinion it is more likely that Fabregas will generate more points against Birmingham at home than Malouda will at Villa.

very interesting, good to see some hints on the lineups for the weekend being dug up.

on a side note; do we expect to see elmo and VDV increase another .1 each by deadline?

going to need to be a busy day or two of transfers....

I think it will really pick up now, but it will be tight as to whether they will rise. Elmo is on 58% with 2,619 net transfers in today, so I would say he will be there, thereabouts for a rise tomorrow night with Friday being the main transfer day, same can be said for VDV/Adam and Tevez, steady interest all week, more casual players will be doing alot of transfers tomorrow, and for me on WC, here's hoping!

AP > i'm looking for a bit of a discussion with you. I am, like yourself, a united fan and I still have my reservations about picking O'shea as a regular starter. He's in my team at the moment and he's played every minute so far but with right back full of options and hargreaves close to a return surely the 5.6 odd could be spent somewhere on a guaranteed starter.

      whats your stance?

AP's view is the same as my view on O'Shea, if you have a decent enough bench,O'Shea will play more often than he is rested, therefore, if you have good subs, O'Shea is worth the 5.6 for me.

That being said, I actually see him as a risk this weekend where SAF might favour Rafael's pace and trickery against West Brom

Well Hargreaves will play midfield. He only plays RB if absolutely necessary.

I've had O'Shea since the start and will continue to play him. If he's rested/rotated so be it, but SAF loves him, and the return of the Vidic Rio partnership will mean a load of cleen sheets i think.

Great, a good points. My bench can stomach the odd call up I guess.

About Hargreaves; I meant to say that his return will fill the DM position, a place we have seen O'shea deployed on occasions as well

I have heard utterances (quiet ones) of an Evra injury, any one got any info or link on this?

I've got a defensive headache with Konch and Alex out. I could:

a: play Jara away at Utd
    b: 4 point hit for Alex/Konch out for Jags/O'Shea/Knight/ANOther

I do love this game, but I always seems to be a few quid short of being able to make the transfers I want. I think the game would benefit from a "Ludicrous Foreign Investment Based on Dodgy Refinancing Deal" option. Like the wildcard, you can play it at any point during the season. It would then give you unlimited funds to buy any player you like in the game, but only for a limited period before you enter administartion, have 9 points deducted and will only be allowed to sell players for the rest of the season.

Some interesting points there Mark. Especially the possibility of Newcastle going to a 4-4-2, I can certainly see the temptation for Hughton to go heavy up front against Wigan after the poor returns against Blackpool and Stoke but I can't see Ameobi working overly well with Carroll as they are both 'target men'. I could imagine Lovenkrands getting a recall instead to offer a little more guile and mobility.
At 4.8 Jordi Gomez offers great value in my opinion, and when Wigan's fixtures improve he is certainly going to be in my thoughts for a cheapie midfielder.

I'm hoping that the source on the Torres update, which looks pretty robust, is the same as for the Konchesky one. There is a danger that the journo is just rehashing Sept's 'liverpool hope he will be fit' stories, nevertheless this gives us Konchesky owners fresh hope.

I would go for Elmander. I still think Odemwingie will dry up as he's more of a winger. I wouldn't touch Varney - he has never been prolific & there's a reason why he has been in the lower leagues for most of his career.

Im even considering benching Davies at home. Look a low scoring game. What about Petrov maybe or Lee?

Advice for my Sky Sports team?

Note that Bale is classed as a defender and so is OOP, only 2 max players from each team, no subs, and points are 3 for an assist, 4 for a goal for everyone (thus it’s better to spend money in attack). No clean sheet points, but a negative for leaking goals

    Current team:

    Friedel
    Bale, Baines, James Collins, Evra
    Walcott, Milner, Arteta, Malouda
    Drogba, Caroll.

First thoughts are to get Walcott out (what was I thinking?) for maybe Nani? And perhaps replace Evra (not sure). I have 5 transfers available to use of 24 for the whole season.
