Since joining the club for £8.2m back in June 2008, Johan Elmander’s career at Bolton can hardly be described as a success. Five goals in his first season followed by just three goals last season had many doubting the club’s record signing’s ability to settle in the Premier League.

With Kevin Davies guaranteed a starting slot, Elmander’s first-team time diminished last season, as he vied with Ivan Klasnic for the sole remaining place up-front. Starting just 15 games, he managed the full 90 minutes on only 4 occasions, despite the club replacing Gary Megson with the less-negative Owen Coyle. His Fantasy Premier League (FPL) starting price this season, £5.5m, was a fair reflection of his impact to date, but the big Swede’s showing in the opening seven gameweeks have made something of a mockery of that price.

Elmander looks like a permanent fixture in the Bolton side this season, starting every league game to date, and his points total of 42 is the seventh-highest in the game so far. He’s scored 4 goals, made 2 assists and has been awarded 8 Bonus Points already. The most impressive aspect of these Bonus Points is he’s yet to be awarded all 3 in one game, accumulating his total over five of the seven games, a feat matched only by Didier Drogba and Dimitar Berbatov.

A look at the Members OPTA stats possibly offers an explanation as to why the Bonus judges look favourably upon his performances. Elmander is amongst the top ten for forwards in terms of “Shots” and “Shots on Target”. He sees plenty of the ball too, again amongst the top ten forwards for “Touches” and “Passes Made”. There’s no doubt he also puts in a shift defensively; he’s in the top ten forwards for “Duels“, “Aerial Duels“, “Clearances” and “Blocks“, and is top for “Tackles“, “Interceptions” and “Recoveries“. Add that to his four goals and the effect a regular starting place is having on his importance to the Bolton cause is obvious. A little faith in his ability by Owen Coyle has resulted in Elmander’s elevation to Bolton’s key player so far this season.

Elmander’s price has crept up to £5.8m as a result of his displays, and with Bolton now looking at three home games in the next four (and four in the next seven) more investment should be expected. This run of fixtures reads (STK, wig, LIV, TOT, eve, wol, NEW) and given that Elmander scored 6 points against both Arsenal and Man Utd already this season, there should be little, if no, trepidation about fielding him in matches against the “tougher” teams.

Somewhat bizarrely, Elmander has failed to find the net at home so far this season, yet has scored in every one of the Trotters’ away games. Given the form he brings into this upcoming kind run though, there’s every chance he’s about to put that Reebok drought to an end.

I thought the fee when he joined Bolton was £11 million - wasn't there a joke going around that someone had put in an extra '1' on the offer by accident and they'd just gone through with the deal out of embarrassment? 🙂

Can I get a little gambling assistance? I am involved in a little betting syndicate and need to find a good bet for this weekend.

Was thinking Man City over Blackpool @ 8/13 or Man Cty to win to nil @ 15/8 (paddypower odds of course!)

Or are Blackpool better than I give them credit for?

how bout west brom to beat man U ? they got a good result vs arsenal.. altho it isnt fair to compare man u's defence with arsenals but going forward Man U have offered next to nothing in their last 3 games and West Brom could nick a goal or two. Im doing that bet anyway

I have no idea why people are falling over themselves to get Fabregas in?

He will come on for 60 mins at best but from what has happened the last few times when Arsene re- injured him from early returns im sure he will be on as a second hand substitute giving Wilshere some game time. Then he has Man City who will pack the midfeild with 3 DM’s. He is a diffenate season must but not until GW 10 surely.

Anyone care to let me in on their ideas on what he will return in the next two game weeks because hes not worth it yet and esspecially notfor a four point hit

Maybe u r right but the problem is that Malouda could be rested against Wolves and Fabregas price will be higher GW 10. I believe that fitness of Kalou is the most important issue.

Ok so I'm gettin fabs in for gerrard becuase 1. After i promised myself i wouldn't get any pool players in i then went ahead and brought in 2 and as I predicted I then had to go through watching them be crap and knowing they're in my team. So out they go never to be seen again. 2. If i dont do it now then as daniel said his price will more than likely have gone up by GW10. 3. This time is completely different to when he returned a few weeks back which was in the middle of games. he's had 2 weeks off and is fully fit there isn't a chance he's not starting imo. But I still dont know if i should put all my hopes on em or captain nani

See, this is where I get annoyed. Not at you specifically but these types of posts.

"Malouda could be rested against Wolves"

Yes, but not for definite. Drogba could even "be rested" if Carlo wanted him to be rested. Every player is subject to being rotated nowadays if need be so you're pretty much just trying to convince yourself that's the case so you can get Fabregas in.

Ah no malouda being rested or not has absolutely nothing to do with gettin fabs into my team. I'm never benching/dropping malouda unless he's injured. BTW lads as ye can see my def is absolute pants. With konch a doubt and O'shea having a possible rest should i take a hit to change up one of my defenders. I was thinking with .3 left after fabs i could swap sheasie for boa or get rid of stam for elmo which would be long term. Or is a hit no good especially as im already playing catch up. (For anyone that wants a look the only league im intersted in is the rob roy league, its a pub league with €20 a man. I think top 6 get bobs so thats my aim first of all.) What do you think of the following... a 4 point hit to do...

    Hahnemann –> Jaaskelainen
    Davies –> Adam
    Bale –> Van der Vaart

    leaving me with..

    Foster Jaaskelainen
    Alex Jones Faye Perch Konchesky
    Malouda Adam VDV Nani Yaya
    Carroll Tezez Drogba
    [Bank: 2.2]

Or do you reckon I should downgrade some players and get Fabregas in? Perhaps I could get Nasri in instead to have some Arsenal cover?

imo there is no need for "arsenal cover" or any other cover. you need the best scoring players. period. fabregas is one of them, if not, the one. you should work on getting him in. personally i plan to do that for GW10

What do you guys make of this plan:

    bale out, fab in
    davies out, VDV IN
    torres out, carrol in,
    konchesky out, Gohouri in.

12 point hit and leaves me with this team:

    Foster

    Jara/Dann/Gohouri

    VDV/Fabregas/Malouda/Nani

    Drogba/Tevez/Carrol

    (Jussi, ferguson, basham, foley)

I realize the bench is pants but my word, look at that midfield!

    What dya reckon?

Malouda - played over 60 mins in every game so far this season bar the West Ham game, currently leading points in the midfield area while playing for the current Champions and league leaders.

Fabregas - completed one game so far this season.

I'm not saying that he won't be going in my team at some point, but he has to at least finish 2 or 3 games in a row to convince me he's worth putting in again.

2 free transfers this GW, Injuries have somewhat hampered my progress!

    Current Team_

    Schwartzer (Foster)
    Konchesky Hughes Shawcross (Sagna) (Alex)
    Malouda Nasri AJohnson Etherington (Yaya)
    Drogba TeveZ(*C) Carroll

    Elmander......

I've seen his stats before and since Sweden were playing Holland on Tuesday I had a good hard look at him. He played forward left (they have Ibrahimovic in the middle) and he was a joke! Completely outplayed by van der Wiel and when vdW was on forward ventures, he was easily contained by Heitinga. I know it's against top opposition but this guy will never get in my team, lol.

      Hello.

While you are right about most of the points you make we should also note that you could use the same argument to write off dozens of players from our teams. It should be remembered that he plays for Sweden who were away to the World Cup finalists who have not lost at home for ages and ages.

by the same token you could say Rooney will never get in your team, Valencia was owned by Enrique when United played Newcastle, I take your point that he is not the best thing since sliced bread, but he is definitely worthy of a look on current form in the premiership

I take it that the homesick Jean Claude Van Damme is unlikely to feature for Wolves this gameweek? He really is a Hard Target to pick, a real Maximum Risk. Honestly I would have thought such a mercenary Universal Soldier would have settled better in England. I mean football is a Bloodsport and I thought he'd have been Lionheart - ed enough, but has proved to be Derailed. Anyway I suppose I'd better Kick-boxer him into touch.

Stop shouting! Doubling up can also pay double dividends if it works. It's a gamble. Agree about Foley, he is more likely to get a cs than Salcido imo. If you must have 4 defs scoz, I would leave out Salcido.

i spend about 5 mins on each team tops a week, just put in players i like that will do well without any serious thought of rotation with other players, it helps me not have them in my main team cos i'm always inching to make transfers, i can't help myself.

Surely this is a members article? I didn't pay my fee only to have the OPTA stats used for regular articles as well.

The first half of the article is fine, but as soon as you start talking about where he ranks in the OPTA stats surely the line has been crossed and should only be available to Members.

Am I alone in thinking this?

I'm not too pushed over a little bit of stat use. In fact it may serve to recruit more members if they get the craving for stats. However there is obviously a line between a little bit and taking the piss out of your paying members, this article falls on the 'little bit' side for me.

i just think those guys needed rewarding for they're toil really, i look at player projections but only agree on half of them, kevin doyle is taking the piss on there quite frankly.

the promise of new tools is just fine

if you don't do your own analysis your a mug anyway you're not gonna win this without taking a few leaps of faith, having some luck etc.

Maybe I've been misunderstood here. At no time do I dispute the 12.50 or feel in any way hard done by - to be honest its reasonably rare that I use the Members stats etc, I paid the fee to support the site. However the chap who started this thread has some basis for being disgruntled, if (which I imagine will not happen) all the material that people have paid for suddenly becomes widely available then the people who have paid for exclusive access have every right to be annoyed with their loss of exclusivity. Now I have every faith in the discretion of the contributors that they know and appreciate that there is a line that shouldn't be crossed.
Again I'm not saying that I in particular have a problem with this article or other similar use of a light smattering of OPTA stats but I can understand some people being annoyed by it.

I was actually responding to Dirty Harry dude, I can see why it would become an issue, I have always been of the view that the membership fee provides ample opportunity for me to support something I use on a daily basis and also to have access to the Opta stats etc.

I agree with all of the above, I didn't pay to get teh stats but to support the team. It just smacks a little that others are gaining benefit from my money. Only I should gain benefit from my money and when i Give it to the site, the site shoudl benefit as it is now their money, but it is not Joe Bloggs money and so Joe Bloggs should not benefit.

I'm not overly bothered, I get what I want out of it, just tghink there is a line and that was crossed, when teh OPTA stats were used/quoted

Think of it as the film playing in the shop window. If you've just bought Avatar, why are other people getting bits of it for free?

As far as it goes, from a non-member all it does is heighten the mystery behind the mysterious OPTA stats.

As for me, I'm torn. I think Mark et all deserve a reward for the hard work, and I wouldn't hesitate buying them a drink. I may even donate.

But as far as paying for fantasy football goes, it's kind of anathema. I like hanging around here, but I'm not a football fan, and nor do I really want to be. I like knowing the little that I know, and I find it's enough to make things interesting without being all-consuming.

Once I get into something I tend to go a bit overboard (like when I got my chefs knife - don't ask) and I need to draw the line somewhere.
