Everton’s season finally got started with their win against Birmingham in Gameweek 7 but despite languishing in the relegation zone, defensively they have actually performed well. In terms of goals conceded they are sitting in fourth place behind Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham, and that is despite the three conceded against Man United at Goodison. With two clean sheets in their last two games and a reasonable run of fixtures ahead, we can now start to take a serious look at the various options in the Everton defence.

While Seamus Coleman offers a great differential option , the form and proven Fantasy potential of Leighton Baines looks too much to ignore; his nailed-on starting role and constant attacking threat has seen him shoot up to third place in our defenders Watchlist rankings this week.

The price tag is of course an issue; an FPL value of 6.8 is a lot of money to part with for an Everton defender, but at least you can be confident of getting a consistent performer, that will earn you points at both ends of the field.

In the 08/09 season Leighton Baines scored an incredible 105 points in the second half of the season, and was far and away the highest scoring defender across these 19 games. To put this into context, in the same period, Didier Drogba scored 60 points, and even Ronaldo only managed 109. Everton kept 11 clean sheets over this spell, and of course, the team’s defensive performance will play a big part in his eventual points tally, but it’s Baines’ individual attacking threat which makes him such a key Fantasy prospect.

Even without Steven Pienaar, the vast majority of Everton’s attacking play comes from the left, and Baines is constantly looking to get into advanced positions to cross the ball into the centre. The chalkboards below highlight just how central Baines is to Everton’s attacking play; taken from Everton’s last game against Birmingham, they compare the number of passes made by Baines and Coleman, who was playing on the right of midfield.

Members can delve further into their Opta stats which only go to provide further evidence of Baines’ performances this season. His stats for “Successful Crosses”, “Key Passes” and “Successful Passes in the Oppositions Half” in particular, illustrate his value to Everton’s attacking play. The comparison with Fantasy favourite Gareth Bale in terms of passing, crosses and touches, is also interesting and goes some way to show just how influential Baines has become.

Forthcoming fixtures are a bit of a mixed bag. A Merseyside derby is never easy, but with the recent turmoil and Liverpool’s poor form so far this season, David Moyes’ men will fancy their chances of taking all three points on Sunday. Torres looks to have recovered sufficiently to take part in this one while Jagielka looks likely to miss out, but a third clean sheet in a row is still a distinct possibility at home. A tricky game away to Tottenham follows, but after this fixtures lighten up considerably (STK blp BOL ARS sun WBA), making Baines a very solid mid-term investment leading up to the Christmas period.

I always get Baines in my team at some point throughout the season and my mates always seem to overlook him and very ticked off when he bundles in with an assist once they have conceded.

Would like him a little bit lower in price though before I take the plunge.

I think the money this week will be in the everton Midfield. Wait till the Derby's played to hook in any Everton Defender - Cahill/Arteta/Fellaini will take the star turns I think.

    team for this weekend -

    Hahnemann
Elmohamady / Williamson / Tamas (konchesky & Alex both injured!)
Fabregas / Nani / Malouda / Toure (Bale)
    Drogba / Carroll / Berbatov

I have no transfers to use now.

So, do I start with Fabs or Bale?

no, in all probability Fabs won't play, BUT he could and as Tottenham are away to Fulham, I'm not sure Bale will perform. What happens if I start with Fabs and he only comes on for 20 mins at the end!!!!

Hmmmm - 6.8m a bit much for me.

I'll admit, I've been pretty lax over the international break, and so am on the hunt for a bit of advice.

    Foster (Carson)
    Faye Dann Jones (Elmo) (Koncheskey)
    Bale Malouda Nani(C) Johnson (Kuyt)
    Drogba Tevez Carroll

    1. Now Kuyt is injured, do I use my transfer and get in someone (VDV?) or just hope Johnson does the business and leave it? Lot of money to be wasting on an injured midfielder

    2. Do I use the transfer elsewhere?

    3. Do I stick Koncheskey in, or will the derby be a goal-fest?

Evra is 7.4 and Baines is 6.8, I don't RBJ, as a United fan, and as much as I love Evra, 6.5 was good value for him in days old, he always got that far forward, his shooting is pants but his crossing has improved, he certainly has more to do now down the wing but I am not convinced he is worth the 7.4 where Cole is only .5 dearer, I think I would rather pay out the .5 more for Cole.

I have decided that I really want 1 expensive defender a la Evra/Cole/Baines so that I have at least 1 defender every week I know will play and has a chance of clean sheet and/or assists. Boateng and O'Shea are my two big team guys at the moment, not convinced about either though

Not convinced by Evra at all this season.... Baines beats him off the park in terms of every attacking statistic going. I accept stats arent everything but they seem to back up everything i've seen so far this season. Maybe once they dump Evans they'll stop letting in so many goals at least

On my WC,want one of these two final teams,so which one looks good for the deadline:

      i) Foster,Krul,
      Samba,O'Shea,Foley,Jara,Konchesky,
      Nani,Malouda,Fabs,Barton,Ferguson,
      Drogs,Oddthingy,Tevez.

ii) Same team, just instead of O'Shea+Ferguson+Krul,I'll have Elmo+Adam+Carson, although this way I'll be running the risk of doubling up on West Brom's defence occasionally with Jara in there as well and also missing out on Man. United's CSs.But I think Elmo and Adam have scored big early on in the season so they are worth having in the team.

And just so you know, the last draft of my team is as follows:
      Foster,Carson,
      Alcaraz,Toure,Jara,Konchesky,Elmo,
      Nani,Malouda,Etherington,Albrighton,VdV,
      Drogs,Tevez,Oddthingy.

Had bought all those jokers just to make money, but except VdV no one else has gone up by 0.2.So,what should my final team be?Any opinions are welcome, thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Thanks fella! When I see 'Hamstring' i'm instantly more concerned.

In the 90's and early 00's a hamstring injury was likely to keep a player out for 4-6 weeks, now with modern techniques(and with more money involved) clubs can get back players sooner.

I'd still wait 3 weeks on any hamstring injury minimum, even if it's a grade 3 strain or whatever.

I meant in a sense that'd he'd be a certain starter for 4.4 million in a team that is argueably in the top 5 most likely to keep clean sheets in the league, season after season.

If they were both starting, would you double up on them?

I'd say bench Adam, since City defense is tight and their midfield trio of DeJong Barry and Yaya would make life hard for him.

He could also get a penalty + 3BP and make me eat my hat, though.

A few days ago I posted a comment related to Baines as an alternative to Cashley...This was an attempt to source a threatening defender and in the process free up a little money for other transfers...glad to see my initial thought wasn't too off the mark..

      (Baines 1st / Cole 2nd)
      Touches: 74 / 76
Successful Dribbles: 1.29 / 0.85 (per game played)
      Passes: 43 / 50
      Key Passes: 1.7 / 1 (P/G)
      Passes in Opp Half: 24.6 / 23.7 (P/G)
      Crosses: 2.1 / 0.9 (P/G)

      Goal Att: 3 / 5
      Set Piece Att: 2 / 0
      Corners: 6 / 0
      Assists: 2 / 2
      Clean Sheets: 2 / 5

If you consider Everton's poor start and lack of finishing Baines could easily be a close second or even first on the Defenders list. His "Crosses" average per game is way higher so the potential for assists is very high...add to the fact that he has set piece duty too...and it does seem he is a viable alternative...In real life we all know Cashley get's the praise..but the stats do show potential...His price as noted is steep but if you value the "threat" and "potential for points" then he'd be a good alternative to have...However, nothing matters if Everton don't start converting more goals and keep clean sheets...He is very much a watchlist candidate for sure...Spose the secret is out the bag now as I'm sure most would have avoided him with Team Form and Price an issue.

Note: I am not saying Sell Cole...Thanks

Very good research Pistol. I see that over a quarter of all teams hae Cashley in their own team, while less than 4% have baines. I think people would rather go for Cole because he has the insurance policy of Chelsea. I would much rather bank on a Chelsea CS than an Everton CS. But for 1.1 more? It's not worth it, I personally would go for Baines.

Just realised I can afford Alex->Baines, but it means I can't afford Bale->VDV. Decisions decisions decisions...

The joys of fantasy football hey...I wouldn't jump on that transfer in of Baines just yet...there would need to be a considerable upturn in form before he would oust the Ashmeister...as you note...Cole has the Chelsea factor going for him...In the end I guess it's your choice of flavour...meaning what type of defenders you rely on to score you your points..

In the case of freeing up cash...and not wanting to lose the bite that Cashley offers...then perhaps he is the alternative...which is what I was looking for when I did this research...

well if both chelsea defenders start, i'll play both of them, which means i have to get rid of either gerrard or Carroll

Actually i'm doing metro league, so gerrard is only 8.7, and only has 31 more points than carroll and since newcastle are playing wigan at home and liverpool playing everton away, its not as simple as your making out.

Do I bring in Nani for Arshavin (see link to my team)? Or do people reckon there will be not much difference scoring wise this week between them, especially now Fabs is out for Arsenal (so Arshavin on pens for instance)?

Oh wow Arshavin? Read the article in the link and you'll see why not to get him:

Which 2 to start this week out of:

Bale, A Johnson, Stam, Konchesky, Barton

(already playing Carroll and Krul if that helps on the Barton issue)

      Thanks!

Difficult captaincy decision this week. I was going to get in Fabregas and give him the armband, but clearly not an option now.

Drogs is yet to score away from home (although he's had assists) and away to Villa is never going to be easy. Tevez away at Blackpool playing in a low-ish scoring City side could be an option.

Must admit Nani is possibly the most tempting, but just not quite sure he's established himself as a reliable captaincy option yet.

in exactly the same boat as you. the usual captain suspects fabregas and lampard are no where to be seen so it makes captain choice alot harder this season but also makes it more interesting

      so, fabs stuff this morning so far;

the telegraph have him as closeto startsing'
      http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/7943461/Arsenal-v-Birmingham-City-match-preview.html

Guardian has him definite nono, and also quote the wenger article yesterday

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/oct/14/fabregas-wenger-arsenal

      AND, clubcall, who put this up at 830 this morning, have him as pretty much playing saying;
" But the return of Fabregas will be a massive boost for the club as he has shaken off a hamstring injury.

you have him in WC team? Considering it myself to save having to do it next week, but not sure, there are no fixtures this weekend that really jump out at me bar United at home and Arsenal at home, wouldn't be big loss benching him this weekend

Yeah I got him before the press conference. Now I'm -4 this week with not much on the bench if he doesn't play. I think I've had enough luck this year and some bad luck has to come eventually. I mean, look at my ranking! The boys at school can't believe it!

you never know in a derby, but they are usually tight affairs so i think theres a good chance.

the only thing i would be worried about is yellow and red cards

      Jussi
      Mummy / O’Shea/ P.Jones
      Malouda / Arshavin / S Davies/ Petrov
      Drogba / Tevez (C) / Carroll

Bench: Foster, Routledge, Konchesky, Alex (in that order)

Thinking of doing Nani to Arshavin? Or should I leave it, with Fabs out (and Arshavin on pens for instance)?

Nasri was also absent when Arsh took that penalty in the league.

In the Carling Cup game against Spurs recently Fabs was missing and both Arsh and Nasri were on the pitch. Nasri took 2 pens and scored both. Arsenal haven't had a penalty since, but it's reasonable to assume that Nasri remains ahead of Arsh in the penalty taking pecking order.
