Baggies up to fourth, Bale fails to bring his European form to home matters, Drogba “captaincy fail” shocker and Andy Carroll gives his landlord a helpful nod.

Rafael Van der Vaart continued his record of scoring in every game he’s played at White Hart Lane, with Peter Crouch yet again assisting the Dutchman, as Spurs came from behind against Everton. Gareth Bale suffered a post European hangover, as he once again failed to replicate his Champions League form domestically. Alan Hutton impressed on the right with a series of threatening crosses that proved problematic to David Moyes’ men, particularly in the first half.

With Mikel Arteta injured, Leighton Baines got his chance to illustrate his set-piece prowess and duly obliged with a fantastic free kick to give Everton the lead. Young Seamus Coleman had a quiet game, as Everton looked to double mark Bale in order to nullify the Welshman’s threat on the left. Phil Jagielka and Sylvin Distin were awarded 5 of the 6 Bonus Points between them, a reflection on the Toffees defensive display as they repelled Harry Redknapp’s side. Everton now have four of their next six games at home and approach next week’s match with Stoke in increasingly impressive form.

In keeping a clean sheet against Blackpool, Birmingham became only the third team- after Arsenal and Chelsea- to do so. Nikola Zigic, one of Mark’s Scout Picks this weeks, was given a rare start and showed his class as he scored once, assisted a Liam Ridgewell goal and picked up all 3 Bonus Points in a performance that delighted Alex McLeish and gave the Blues their first win in seven.

Blackpool will be hoping for good news on Charlie Adam, who was taken off after 65 mins, limping from an (as of yet) unknown injury. No doubt clarification of the situation will be round the corner. The Seasiders spurned many good chances during the match and despite registering 20 shots at goal, failed to find a way past Ben Foster in the Birmingham goal. Holloway’s side may be taking the plaudits for their attacking displays but it doesn’t hide the fact they have now lost four of their last five. Holloway admitted afterwards,

“We were beaten by the better team and the manager beat me with his tactics”.

Chelsea racked up yet another clean sheet in the comfortable 2-0 home win over Wolves, and have conceded one goal in their last five league games. To huge surprise, Didier Drogba was not involved in either goal, a fact which will disappoint a great deal of Fantasy managers. Florent Malouda opened the scoring with his first goal in four games for the Champions, with Salomon Kalou, his replacement on 71mins, grabbing the second. Yet again, Ashley Cole picked up all 3 Bonus Points, for the third time this season, and despite his price of £8.1m for a defender, he is continuing to look great value for money..

Mick McCarthy’s men have taken just one point from their last six games and although 2-0 could be seen as a damage-limitation exercise, Wolves actually had the majority of possession and has 10 shots on target, double the amount of their hosts. With their next three games being (MCY, mun, ARS) Wolves have little to smile about as they sink to second-bottom.

Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa propelled Steve Bruce’s side up to seventh in the table and took their unbeaten run to seven games. Beaten just once this season, Bruce’s 4-5-1 formation definitely offers more defensive solidity, but comes with a lack of goals right now; although this was their third clean sheet in succession, they have scored just once in these three games, only adding to the appeal of Out Of Position defender Elmohamady, whose 2 Bonus Points takes his tally to 22 points in those last three games, oustanding value for his £4.9m price as a defender..

Gerrard Houllier replaced John Carew with Emile Heskey up front but despite bossing the second half, Villa left the Stadium of Light with nothing to show for their toils. Young Marc Albrighton remained on the bench, with Stephen Ireland once again failing to shine in midfield. Villa failed to build on last week’s draw with Chelsea, as a Richard Dunne own goal condemned them to their fourth defeat of the season.

West Brom again showed their steely side in coming from behind at home to defeat Mark Hughes’ Fulham 2-1. Chris Brunt was once again at the heart of things, assisting a Youssouff Mulumbu goal and picking up 2 more Bonus Points as Marc-Antione Fortune’s winner both proved they can win without Peter Odemwingie and took the Baggies unbeaten run to seven games. Roberto di Matteo showed himself to be a master of the understatement as he put the club’s recent great form down to “Just hard work“.

Having started the season unbeaten in their first seven games, Fulham have now lost two on the trot, as injuries deplete Mark Hughes first-choice XI. They travelled to the Hawthorns without Damien Duff, Danny Murphy, Bobby Zamora, Dickson Etuhu and Simon Davies and despite taking the lead courtesy of a Scott Carson own goal, were overhauled by their determined hosts. Fulham will look to pick themselves up next weekend with a home tie against Wigan.

Wigan recalled Hugo Rodallega to the starting XI and the forward took his chance by scoring and picking up all three Bonus Points. The Bonus judges also continued their recent courting of Charles N’Zogbia, awarding the winger another 2 this week for his troubles.

Bolton’s Johan Elmander continued his habit of scoring away from home, grabbing his fifth goal in as many games on the road with the equaliser at the DW Stadium. Currently on a five match unbeaten run, Bolton face Liverpool next week and with the form of both teams, could feasibly be regarded as favourites for the showdown at the Reebok Stadium. Owen Coyle’s side now have four of their next six games at home and sit three points off third place.

West Ham’s four match unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Newcastle, as the visitors came back from a goal down to win 2-1. Victor Obinna again looked a real handful, but following Carton Cole’s first goal of the season, the Hammers were no match for Chris Hughton’s side and remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Andy Carroll put his terrible off-field week to one side as his winner for the Magpies at Upton Park took Newcastle up to ninth in the table. Carroll also played a part in the equaliser as his nod down, albiet slightly deflected, was lashed home by current landlord Kevin Nolan to equalise. Nolan was awarded two Bonus Points for his performance, though whether Carroll will be belatedly given an assist for his contribution in the goal is yet to be seen. Chris Hughton was delighted with both Carroll’s response and the team display, calling it “Probably the best performance of the season“.

    Hi guys,

Still trying to battle with the Fabregas question. Assuming he doesn't have his leg broken by De Jong today, is it worth taking an eight point hit as follows:

    Shawcross out, Simpson in
    Steinsson out, Tamas in
    Kuyt out, Fabs in

Yeah, so Malouda to Fabs may backfire, but it's a risk worth taking IMO.

Unfortunately, I have only enough money to do it at current prices so will have to do it today probably, and hope the midweek games don't bring any major injuries.

(also gutted I am out of the cup 🙁 )

BBC's quote for Carrolls assist, on this basis it should be amended: "And the Magpies duly levelled when Carroll rose well at the back post to head Barton's cross into the path of Nolan, who smashed in a low shot from eight yards". 😀

Yeah there's a massive issue with trying to get all the big hitters there.

i've got Nani, Mal, VDV, Drog and Tevez but i'd need to lose one of them to get fab. Originally it was going to be tevez but now i'm really not sure.

Because I've got Drogba i'm thinking that it might have to be Malouda. But i'm loathed to get rid of him.

Have you seen the team name of the highest score this gameweek? Some peoples sense of humour are a little wrong. Some people checked and it didn't make sense.

Well for very short period of time the top score was 86 and the team name was kiddiefiddler harriers. Obvious fpl spotted this quickie and surly deleted him. Anyone else spot this?

Also on my mind is that VDV might not have such a free attacking role behind crouch once Defoe is back. And that City are set up first and foremost not to concede. My head hurts, I need to go lie down...

Malouda only has goals against West Brom, Wigan, Stoke, Blackpool and Wolves and only one of these was away from home. He has no assists whatsoever. It would suggest that he's not great against the better teams (5 points against Man City & Arsenal) and Chelsea's fixtures are about to get trickier with 4 away matches in the next 6.

Obviously he could continue scoring at his current rate and that is what you'd want considering his price. If I had him, I'd base my decision on what I paid for him. I don't think he's worth 10m+ but if you bought him at 9.5 it is a different story.

Interesting points. Worth mentioning that the potential switch would be made for GW 11, since Fabs will be coming in GW 10, so if nothing else that's one less away game. Also I bought him for 9.6. Tough call...

The other option is to keep Malouda and, should he start next week, bring Bosingwa in as a Cashley lite. Not happy about not squeezing VDV in but could be a feasible comprimise

Hadn't considered keeping Bale, that's another headache! Just had a look and could keep him, get Bosingwa and Fabs at the expense of downgrading Jaask to, say Al-Habsi. That might be a better option, hinging on whether Bos can hold down a place, and whether Bale stays in LM when Defoe gets back and the midfield has one less space for the likes of VDV and Modric.

Thanks very much for your comments by the way, much appreciated!

You might also think about Cole too on this. He has 63 points after nine matches and a continuation of this current rate would put him way over 250. Has a defender ever scored this much? My own strategy is not to pay over 5.5 - 6.0 for defenders so he would never enter my calculations. I always think there are other almost as good options out there allowing you to improve your team in other areas.

The problem is not to over-tinker. I was always going to keep cashley for the season and he's my only expensive defender to play every week. Fabs/lamps was my exp midfielder for same reason.

Just the one error correction?! At least three missing words, a stray capital, a missing full stop. The correction you do make doesn't even make sense, regardless of whether you're chaging 'honk' or 'looks'. If you're going to correct yourself, do it properly. Better 'look' next time.

I've got to totally disagree with you on that one... Malouda plays up in a 3 with Drogba and Anelka, if he plays he will ALWAYS be there or there abouts in the box. It's become pretty obviousy towards the end of last season and early this season that Lampard plays a deeper role in Ancelotti's Chelsea.

I was planning to get A Cole in GW12 but concerned I might be priced out. A 4ph for J Cole > Fabs and Alex > A Cole would give me:

        Mig - Krul
        A Cole - Konch - P Jones - Gohouri - Jara
        Fabs - Malouda - Nani - N'Zogbia - Barton
        Drogba - Berbs - Carroll

With 0.3 in the bank. Alternatively, if I did Alex > Bosingwa, it would leave me enough to do Berbs > Tevez or N'Zog > VDV in the future. Any thoughts on this?

I'll buy the Bent deal but not Malouda. Investing in expensive defenders just ain't my cup of tea, kiddo.

The worry for those taking out a high price forward to free up cash for Fabs is that Oddbod has been out through injury. Elmander and Carroll aside, who else is worthy of a punt in the cheap price bracket?

Yeah but you'd pay 8 mill for a mid who got 9 points everyweek though so whats the difference? he's virtually a left winger

There are so many good options in the 4.5 - 5.2 range right now that I'm achieving the same points at half the price with Mumster and co. Just need to pick a handy 5, play 3 and rotate to your heart's content.

Malouda-will get you goals, cs, bps, assists. Too important to overlook imo.

Marshal, I'm getting fabs in by downgrading berbatov but have similar thoughts to yours for the next couple of transfers. I'm thinking malouda > vdv and shawcross > cole. As you say he's virtually a winger getting cs points, should be good enough for similar scores as malouda. He was last year.

Looks good to me provided Odenwingie is fit for next weekend. Cashley is hoovering up the bonus points - rightly or wrongly - and he's got the assist value to boot.

Thought Bosingwa should have had something from the bonus judges - Skysports gave him man of the match.

Seems like the FPL panel have used 'intent' in deliberating the iffy assists this season; so I am expecting (and hoping) Carroll to be awarded the assist - after all I neded the points 🙂

I'm going to put myself out of my misery soon and buy back Elmo - kicked him out during my wildcard in gw4; and it's by far my worst decision of the season so far. I have had to eat humble pie over it...

                It was heading to him.

I think it was a significant enough touch not to be an assist, but if you're talking about intent, then that ball was heading to THud.

I was planning to get A Cole in GW12 but concerned I might be priced out. A 4ph for J Cole > Fabs and Alex > A Cole would give me:

    Mig – Krul
    A Cole – Konch – P Jones – Gohouri – Jara
    Fabs – Malouda – Nani – N’Zogbia – Barton
    Drogba – Berbs – Carroll

With 0.3 in the bank. Alternatively, if I did Alex > Bosingwa, it would leave me enough to do Berbs > Tevez or N’Zog > VDV in the future. Any thoughts on this?

Bit of a transfer dilemma im having this morning:

    Team-
    Carson Krul
    Coleman Elmo Konchesky Gohouri Perch
    Fabs Malouda Nani VdV Adam
    Drogba Tevez Odemwingie
    0.2 in the bank

    Option 1)
Keep team as is and do Perch-->Simpson and free up another 0.1mln

    Option 2)
Take a 4 point hit to do Konchesky-->Bosingwa and free up 0.4mln by
    A) Adam --> Barton?
    B) Odemwingie --> ?

    Thoughts?
I also have to be aware that I will need 0.4mln to do Krul-->Harper but that is a while away yet

No it wouldn't… the bonus panel don't base BP's (well hopefully not anyway) on the players scores on FPL. As far as they were aware carroll was involved in the goal. The technicalities of whether it was an assist or not wouldn't have come into their mind.

Imo Ivanovic will be the preferred partner for Terry which will see Alex benched, unless Carlo wants a more defensive right back in which case Alex would partner JT and Ivan take Bosingwa's place.
Just my opinion but Alex or Bosingwa's starting spots are clearly dependent on Carlo's plans for Ivanovic.

Anyone who thought Carroll assist had been given to Piquionne in error (me included) had false hopes I'm afraid. Piquionne assist has now been removed, but not given to Carroll. 🙁
This would also explain Dity Harry's query about the gw leader being removed because of his name. He has not been removed, he had Piquionne as capt and had therefore lost 6pts so is no longer gw leader.
