Many owners have been trying to squeeze three or even four upper bracket midfielders into their lineups this season and as a result, there has been less demand for the mid and budget price options in this area of our squads. The likes of Kevin Nolan, Charlie Adam, Chris Brunt, Joey Barton, and most recently Charles N’Zogbia, have hogged the limelight when it comes to these selections to this point, and Scott Parker and Morton Gamst Pedersen have recently staked a claim as viable options at the sub-6.0 price point.

One name that is now due a seat around the cheap midfielders table is Wolves’ fleet-footed winger Matthew Jarvis. He has shown, with some consistency, form that has threatened even the most robust defence but has suffered from a fixture list that has lent him little assistance when it comes to boosting his Fantasy points tally. In addition, Wolves have hardly been the most prolific of scorers and, while Jarvis has been a reliable supplier of the crossed ball, Mick McCarthy’s side have lacked a free-scoring striker to convert opportunities.

Amidst continued talk fluttering about a possible England call-up and a potential January transfer, Jarvis is now preparing to embark on a run of fixtures that could see him emerge with his best individual totals between now and the end of the season. Jarvis has the opportunity to impress and Wolves will face a run of opposing defences that may yet see them notch a few wins and convert some of their wingers’ creativity.

Jarvis arrives at Gameweek 13 with an unspectacular but healthy 42 Fantasy points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, having tallied 2 goals, 1 assist, and 8 bonus points for his efforts. While that total currently finds him just squeezing into the top 30 Fantasy Midfielders, his early season performance becomes slightly more respectable when you consider that Wolves have already faced Everton, Fulham, Tottenham, Villa, Chelsea, Man City, Man United, and Arsenal during their opening stretch of games.

Looking forward, the first meetings with these “stronger” teams are out of the way. As hit upon by Andy in the recent Frisking the Fixtures, Wolves now hit a very attractive stretch of 7 games through Boxing Day: BOL, blp, SUN, blr, BIR, wba, and WIG. It definitely looks like much clearer sailing ahead.

Owned by 1.1% of of the FPL teams, Jarvis is a long shot in his own right, but seems poised to take off. Alternatively, if you’re digging the Wolves’ schedule and want to gamble on an even bigger differential, you might consider joining the other 0.2% of Fantasy Managers who own Stephen Hunt. Having recently returned from injury, Hunt has yet to produce any Fantasy results in 45, 63, 63, and 83 minutes during the past 4 games, but has been a steady, if not spectacular low-priced options in seasons past.

The problem as I see it (and many others) is with the strikers (or lack of them). We need a prolific striker that doesn't break every now and then.

I don't understand the concept of the protection. IMO, it should be completely up to supply and demand. If they are injured, so what. Don't put a protection on them. If anything, if Nani wasn't on the protection, I'd chuck him out, let him go down .3 or .4, then buy him again when he comes back to make a profit.

Why would FPL make it clear? FISO worked out a formula that worked quite well with most players for protection. FPL has possibly changed their formulae & rules regarding it now with the introduction of CTC & totalfpl.

You may aswell ask FPL to make a site like totalfpl or CTC or a page like mine with the upcoming changes if they gave out all that information. I am sure they don't want other games to copy their idea. Price changes are suppose to be a surprise yet the numbers people have worked out the formulae close enough to 100% for rises, drops have been random this season & protection = guesswork but in the end, pretend there isn't protection so you don't miss the 0.1

i just assumed if they missed a game with injury they would be protected for a few days, if this isnt the case for tevez and nani it shouldnt be for any player

Protection is really for the longer term injuries rather than the short term. RVP will be protected etc.

It's more a case of no-one has worked out the protection rules completely. There's caveats in there that neither you or I know about. If you look at the FISO threads for the early days of Crack the Code you'll see the effort that went in to researching the formula and it's quite impressive that a band of people (and there were quite a few of them) felt strongly enough to research into it.

I'm pretty sure it's not random - There must be something that the likes Fabs (last season) and Tevez and Nani (this season) had in common while they were supposedly protected - it just needs someone diligent enough to spot it.

now i know its not i will just ignore it in future.

it’s the FPLs game and they can run it as they see fit. There is no golden rule and if there its not like they cant change it if they want to. If you get caught out by unexpected price changes then just deal with it – don’t go on bleating about it

It's not a flaw though. The flaw is that we are figuring out the formula to predict price changes which is not the way the fpl wants the game played.
Them catching us out with price changes is actually them fixing a flaw in the game.

Flaw in the game? Excuse me, but do you even know what you’re saying? The price rise/ fall rules are not public knowledge! Sites like totalfpl and ctc are a good estimation of how they work

You could try writing to the fpl to see if they will send you a copy of their algorithm but somehow I doubt you’ll get a response…

All I’m saying is it’s a pointless discussion, as we are never going to find anything out – so deal with it!

The +1 is for the moaning. It was obvious that there was a chance for a rise for Nani this morning. the people like Camzy who took the punt to get Nani before 1am were rewarded. Prepare for the worst when it comes to price changes & you won't miss out.

"After the season starts player values may change by 0.1 a day based on activity in the transfer market. Both the formula used to calculate this change and the time of the change include variable factors and won't be revealed to game players"

FPL can do as they see fit, there are no rules about protection. Just because there are websites out there that are trying to crack the algorithms doesn't mean a) they 100% have done so and know exactly what will happen, and b) you have any right to know what they are at all anyway.

FPL could raise the price of every Tottenham player by 0.1m tonight and drop all of the Wolves squad by 0.1m tonight and you would have nothing to fall back on.

Whinging about it is pointless and fruitless, if I worked for FPL I'd be sitting in my ivory tower pissing myself. Heck, I don't and I always do at these posts.

well i didnt actually mean to start this whole debate, was just a passing comment.

Ive never actually taken the time out to read the rules word for word and just assumed that the price rises and protection had been explained in the rules and that was where CTC FT etc got their info regards protection rises etc

    Morning all,

Original plan was to downgrade Samba for Simpson or Foley so I'd have the cash next week to upgrade Bale to Tim Cahill.

    possible new plan:

    Drogba > Tevez

    which leaves cash for

    Bale > Cahill

and then the week after I could afford to upgrade Samba instead of downgrading him. (team is linked)

I know Drogba is going to come back into form soon but he surely won't outscore Tevez by so much that I shouldn't do this when Cahill and, say Alex, will probably totally outscore Bale and Samba.

    Is this a good idea?

Quick peek at your transfer policy shows you to be a rabid point chaser. Looked at your team and couldn't understand why it was so bad then realised you keep on transfering players in after their points hauls.

You need to keep consistant with your potential big points scoring players. Decide who you think will score most points over medium term and if they are not injured keep them in.

Perhaps bench Arteta this week. But I'd downgrade one of those players because every week you will have a fair bit of money sitting on your bench. If you're downgrading a midfielder, get Albrighton or that Tiote guy from Newcastle. If you're getting a forward, get Varney or Ameobi.

Lampard wasn't getting the best hauls when he was playing earlier in the season.

The majority of his big points scores last season came in Drogba or Anelka's absence. The 4-3-3 centred around Drogba gives little opportunity for Frank to get forward.

He will score points but just not as many as his attacking team mates who will benefit points wise from his return.

    Or
    Gerard and vdv

I think VDV is a must, play as striker, ball goes thru him always, over shadows bale etc and Liverpool hav nice enough fixtures coming up. Swaying with gerard rack the points up from midfield

It's one of the most undecided questions in FPL - when's best to WC?

I've held off on mine. I think it is ideal for a point when there are DGW fixtures or numerous significant injuries.

If you really need to rejuvenate your team though then it is feasible, although you wouldn't benefit from the bonus of playing the money game during the WC week.

Why not change one of your keepers to a cheaper keeper who has a beeter fixture this week (maybe Al-Habsi - Krul or Hahnemann could work too, but you already have NEW and WOL defenders), thus giving you enough money to bring in Nani. Two problems solved in one!
