A weekend of football is over, and now it’s time to break down all the news that has been spilling out of the ethers ever since. There’s your standard injuries, more pulling out than a teenage bible camp and the usual round of back-slapping plaudits that follow a good performance…

We start with -potentially- big news from the Manchester United camp. Wayne Rooney has been the subject of many thousands of words written about him during the worst spell of his career, but just as much the next few could be key…

“Will he play? We will have a look and then build towards next weekend, Wayne has trained very well and we will assess him during the week. The exercise that we have put in place for him has worked well.”

Those are the words of United assistant manager Mike Phelan, and if they are true then we could finally have another top striker back in the realms of selection. Many more words of assurance by the end of the week will be needed, and his 2010 hasn’t been the most sparkling by any stretch of the imagination, but Berbatov and Hernandez haven’t set the world alight the last few weeks and as highlighted yesterday, United have some good fixtures on the horizon – the kind of fixtures that Rooney could profit from.

The England camp has been chock of full of withdrawals as John Terry and Ashley Cole have pulled out of the squad with muscle and ankle problems respectively. Stephen Warnock of Aston Villa has been called up to cover for Cole, while his team-mate Gabriel Agbonlahor also withdrew having just made a comeback from injury himself, Carlton Cole of West Ham and Gary Cahill of Bolton have filled the two other relinquished spots.

Reports from the papers on Monday night seemed to be all doom and gloom and suggest that Andy Carroll could even be out for a couple of weeks. All we know right is that he picked up a groin injury…

”I just felt a twinge in the groin as we were pushing forward to try and get a goal but I don’t really know how it happened…I hoped that if I got a good night’s sleep I might wake up and it would feel better because that’s happened before. It felt worse when I got up but improved during the day.”

Carroll has had to sit out Monday’s training with the England squad, but that is as far as it goes so far. Not quite as cut and dry on the doom and gloom factor, but something which will need to have a close eye kept on with the player now in 47% of all Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams.

Carroll’s team-mate Cheikh Tiote will definitely be absent from Newcastle’s trip to Bolton next weekend after picking up his fifth yellow card in six games and picking up a mandatory suspension for his efforts, joining Joey Barton on the sidelines.

Talking of serving time on the sidelines, four players – Branislav Ivanovic, Danny Collins, Nigel De Jong and Cesc Fabregas – joined the suspension tightrope having picked up their fourth yellow card of the season. Owners of these players, and many more on three yellow cards, will need to be more observant over the coming weeks as more and more players walk this precarious line.

Three of the West Brom squad – Peter Odemwingie, James Morrison and Graham Dorrans – have all withdrawn from duty with their respective countries as precautions on their recent injury woes. Their remaining internationals, including Chris Brunt, Gonzalo Jara, Paul Scharner and Gabriel Tamas, have all reported for duty around the globe with their countries.

Liverpool have confirmed that Fernando Torres sustained an ankle ligament strain during their 2-0 defeat at Stoke on Saturday. Torres however has been allowed to travel out to Lisbon for further assessment by the Spanish medical staff ahead of their friendly with Portugal which may be a sign the injury is only a slight concern.

Everton right-back/right-midfielder Seamus Coleman has admitted that he is still fighting for his place in the team right now, while still learning his trade…

“I don’t know if I am established…I know I am not guaranteed my place every week so I am going out there and trying my best. It is going all right for me so far.”

Honest and down to earth comments from the Irishman, willing to acknowledge his place in the squad but also pushing to learn and grow. That attitude is that which has seen him earn his first international call-up ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s friendly with Norway on Wednesday and why he remains a promising “out of position” buy at a paltry £4.8m.

Fellow Irishman Richard Dunne has been confirmed to reignite a recurring injury in his knee which previously saw him miss a handful of games. The actual prognosis on any timespan out, if any, is as of yet unknown.

Third time lucky in the Irish family sees Kevin Doyle not getting beat up about the fact he is 0 for 12 in his goals to games ratio as he expects his luck to eventually turn. His club Wolves may also face a defensive crisis of their own with Jody Craddock returning from injury and Christophe Berra and Stephen Mouyokolo joining the doubtful parade and leaving Richard Stearman as the only confirmed fit centre-back currently on hand.

Following from Wigan’s one-nil victory over West Brom it was Charlies N’Zogbia, the provider of the sole goal and recipient of another 3 bonus points, who drew all the praise…

“We all know how fantastic a player Charlie (N’Zogbia) is and whenever he gets the ball he causes the opposition problems”

Those are the words of second half substitute Victor Moses who scored that winning goal. Steven Caldwell, another substitute who replaced his injured brother Gary early in the first half, also espoused positively about the French international.

Often Tottenham Hotspurs’ shield, Tom Huddlestone is going to undergo ankle surgery which will rule him out for around three months. The likes of Jermaine Jenas (5.1) and Wilson Palacios (4.9) will compete for his spot but even at low prices offer little in terms of excitement or solid Fantasy investments.

crack the code had him to drop, fantasy tools didnt.

fantasy tools has been wrong before when it comes to predicting price drops of players who have already risen this season, and so in the interests of prudence many people shipped him out.

Still need some help with these decisions

    Foster (Robinson)
    Ridge, Baines, Cashley (Hutton, Elmo)
    Nani, VDV, Malou, Nolan (Park)
    Berba, Torres, Doyle

Been looking at a Torres swap, but for who?

    A) My defense is shoddy and needs something to firm it up, was thinking Park > Ferguson for a Baines > Vidic swap for 4 points.

    B) Could also go Torres > ? then Malouda > Fabs for 4 points

    C) Elmo > Foley and Doyle > Elmander

    D) Elmo > Foley and Park > N’Zog

Those are my curren options. Any ideas?

      Could do

      Torres > Rooney

      Park > Lee

What do you think with the fixtures for Utd and Bolton being pretty good. Worth the risk? I'll obviously wait till Friday to confirm them so as to ensure I get the most info about Roo before I risk the swap

Agree with Chill Pill on that one.

The problem was the composition of the back line with two slow centre backs that kind of lacked understanding. Alex solves both these problems when he replaces Ferreira as he is quicker and more used to playing centre back, so he will easily adapt to his new partner and guide Ivanovic to better performances as well.

The liability that is Jose Bosingwa is of course still there.

It just exposes the defence completely. Alex isn't the fittest, he picks up regular injuries. Then you have Bruma (untested), Bosingwa (generally crap at defending) and Ferreira(enough has been said). The value of having an expensive Chelsea defender is diminished.

The point about Alex being injury prone is a good one. The points I stated are only valid when he plays.

I do think that almost every good defence in the league has at least one injury prone key player so it's not a problem specific to Chelsea, you always run the risk to have your chances for clean sheets lessened by injuries.

Even without Terry Chelsea and City are the only defences worth investing in, everyone else is leaking regulary.

A back 5 of Cech, Bosingwa, Alex, Ivanovic and Cole will still keep more cleanies then most.

Essien obviously enhances the chances of clean sheets but its not the be all.

They won the league without him last year and still kept plenty of clean sheets.

Chelsea leak goals without Essien is another myth, them looking stronger with him is just stating the obvious.

I know what your saying but from the point of view of having Cashley I couldn't give a crap if they never won a game as long as every game was 0-0 so I'd get the cleanie points. It may be stating the obvious but some people might not think it is that obvious and they may think it's purely down to losing the amazing JT.

Last 3 games without Essien we conceded 6 goals, so we depend on him a lot. Without him CS's potential is seriously decreased. I can not sell Cashley but I am worried, so I could even bench him some GW's.

??? Did u tell me to get Nzogbia? I got him for the Newcastle game when not many people were even mentioning him! Apologies if I don't remember u suggesting him.

1 was my original plan and I still like it, 2 does give a nice rotation well into Jan I noticed.

I like them all apart from 3. However, have you considered going Malouda > Ferguson (or similar) and Carroll or Elmander > Tevez? Means you don't have to decide who to bench every damn week.

You could always pray for an exacerbation of Carroll's injury or just go round Kevin Nolan's house and give him a good kick in the groin.

Alex is going to probably be a Chelsea constant for a while though, at least, until Terry is fit again

anyway, i think the point you are making is, is an 8 million + defender too much in a weakened chelsea defence, or is it worth investment in chelsea's cheaper defenders given the risk.

      I'd either do

Malouda > N'Zog and upgrade Piquonne (Rooney, Tevez, RVP)
      Or
Malouda > Cahill, bit less money, upgrade Carr to a United defender.

I think the frustration with Tevez is Man City's negative football.

Tevez will always be involved in any Man City goals but how many will there be?

He has lost his captain appeal because of this and whilst I am keeping him I can see why people might go for other options for the money.

Exactly and it's not as if he is this towering figure that will outmuscle defenders. Hangeland & Shawx will prob sort him out easy enough.

I'd rather upgrade mummy to kolarov with the money I save by selling tevez.

        Morning folks of FFS,

What do you guys think is the optimum front like at the moment. I'm on my wildcardand am unsure whether to ditch Tevez or not. At the moment I'm thinking:

        Drogba, Elmander, Carroll.

Caroll MAY be injured, definitely wait til after the Internationals before using the WC.

Gyan is looking to be in fiery form at the moment, plus his fixtures aren't looking too bad.

Rooney, RVP and Defoe are coming back into fitness, could be worth a looking at since they've all dropped in price. This one's tricky though as you'll be gambling on whether they start this week or not.

Doyle's got really nice fixtures coming up for almost 7 weeks and looks on the brink of finding his scoring boots, worth a look IMHO.

Teves will be looking at a nice run of fixtures, and you can never write him off from scoring, whatever the game.

Then you have Odemwingie, Piquionne and Rodellega. Bargin strikers with the penchant to surprise you on their day.

Basically... it's all about your gut feeling... This game is like... 70-80% luck anyway XD

I need to make 2 changes this week. My team has a lot of holes in it because of knee jerk swaps last weekend for the mid week games. so far I'm looking at

          A) Park > Lee + Torres > Rooney

          B) Torres > Elmander + Malouda > Fabregas

          C) Park > Lee/Jarvis + Elmo > Foley/Simpson

          D) Park > Ferguson + Baines > Vidic

I've got SO many more choices, but I think those 4 are my most probable ones. As you can see, I really want to get rid of Park, Malouda, Elmo and Torres... Torres the most probable to go though.

          Fabregas VDV Nani Nzogbia Jarvis
          Drogba Carroll Elmander
          ..
gonna blay Nzog/jarvis/elmander(in his case away)/carroll/Alex/Coleman only when home and start the rest every week.. that way i'll get a solid 3-4-3 every week or a 4-4-2..
