A five-one battering at the home of your bitter rivals is never something to be positive about, but a 39th minute tactical re-think that day at St James’ Park may ironically prove beneficial to Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in the long-term.

Having favoured a 4-5-1 formation since the start of the season, Bruce hauled off out-of-position favourite Elmohamady and replaced the Egyptian with record-signing Asamoah Gyan, resultantly changing his side’s formation to a 4-4-2 to counter a rampant Newcastle. Since then, Gyan has never looked back.

With Darren Bent succumbing to a hamstring injury, Gyan has taken on the mantle as senior member of a Sunderland strike-pairing that sees him joined up-front by on-loan Man United youngster Danny Welbeck, and since that Tyne-Wear derby, his performances have been sensational. The subsequent three games have seen the Ghanaian as the in-form forward in the Premier League, bagging 4 goals and picking up 5 Bonus Points, a fantastic return of 27 points from his only league starts to date. Even Bent’s imminent return to action will surely do little to limit Gyan’s minutes now, with Welbeck the one briefly benched for the first half at White Hart Lane instead of the £13m signing from Rennes as Bruce began with a 4-5-1 before reverting to two up front for the second forty-five.

Sunderland have a great set of fixtures up next, which reads (EVE, wol, WHM, ful, BOL) and are currently on a run of form which sees them with just one defeat in their last eleven games. In addition, they are unbeaten at home all season, despite facing Arsenal, Man City and Man United at the Stadium of Light.

As the first team to score at Stamford Bridge in the league this season, Sunderland will, undoubtedly, be brimming with confidence coming into the weekend and Asamoah Gyan, priced at £7.2m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and owned by a mere 2.5% of managers, has already shown the league leaders he has the pace, power and precise finishing to put any team to the sword.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    anyone thought of this point

    potentially no ashley cole

def no terry and no alex

chelseas defence : LB (ferreira) CB (ivanovic) RB (Bosingwa)

so the only one playing in position is bosingwa

let me be the first to say...Hah

Depends on the rest of your team.

If you're doubling on Birmingham, don't get Dann.

Also, if you've already got 4 good midfielders, getting N'Zogbia will just make your life difficult.

i'm think of using my two free transfers to do the following:

        1. Malouda > VdV, but I have Bale

        2. O'Shea > Vidic, but I have A. Cole so expensive defense.

Other option would be to do this:

        1. O'Shea > Kolarov, but is he any good? will he play

        2. Barton > Jarvis, stick with Malouda for a bit longer?

Bale/VDV is a bad move given their fixtures. Jarvis is a good option (potentially for Malouda).

They are, although I think Newcastle's fixtures are ok for the next few weeks. It certainly frees up the cash, and when teams like Brum can go to City and get a clean sheet, while Newcastle have a clean sheet at Arsenal - why would you spend more?

I reckon you need to get Nani if you don't already.

Do you think Kolorov, Baotang or Toure is a better bet for regular fixtures?

I prefer Petrov too, but Owen Coyle apparently doesn't at the moment. Petrov hasn't started the last 4 games, and has only come on for the last 9 or so minutes in 2 of them. Petrov is currently on the wrong end of the rotation stick with Matt Taylor having the nod for some reason.

Both have potential upside, but I'm currently leaning to Jarvis over Lee.

Is that why everyone is more interested in him than:
      - Boatang (sure starter for weeks, also able to cover the centre if injury crisis hits)
      - Toure (sure starter since the start of the season).

I would think that Boatang is the better bet myself, and he gets forward to provide assist potential also.

Over the last 50 club matches, kolarov in italy and boateng in germany, kolarov got a few more goals and a few more assists than boateng i cant remember exactly. Someone was on here last night with some interesting stats :-). I can remember him saying that in the same period they both accrued exactly the same amount of cards with 11 yellows and 2 reds which isnt very good

Boateng and Kolarov may get the occasional rest, but they look to be clear first choice on each side. Edge to Kolarov historically from the occasional long range goal, as well as some involvement in free kicks and corners. Edge to Boateng at the moment due to Kolarov's recent return from injury, although it feels he's been eased back in and is now ready to go. Edge to Kolarov by 0.1 in the FPL price category.

i’m think of using my two free transfers to do the following:

    1. Malouda > VdV, but I have Bale

    2. O’Shea > Vidic, but I have A. Cole so expensive defense.

Other option would be to do this:

    1. O’Shea > Kolarov, but is he any good? will he play

    2. Barton > Jarvis, stick with Malouda for a bit longer?

    What say you?

      1. Malouda > VdV, but I have Bale
[I wouldn't waste a transfer on this, VDV has hard fixtures and you have Bale.]

      2. O’Shea > Vidic, but I have A. Cole so expensive defense.
[Sound transfer. Vidic is secure and racking in the BP's. However it does tie a lot of money up in defence.]

      Others:

      1. O’Shea > Kolarov, but is he any good? will he play
[Kolarov is a little bit of a risk. If you're asking if he's any good then you shouldn't be transfering him in imo.]

      2. Barton > Jarvis, stick with Malouda for a bit longer?
[Barton is suspended so should be looking to offload him. Jarvis/Lee/N'Zogbia/Brunt/Adam/Albrighton/Nolan all offer better points potential in the same price bracket.]

    My team's set!

    Foster (Krul)

    A. Cole, Ferdinand, Jara (Coleman, Alcaraz)

Fabregas, Nani, Van Der Vaart, N'Zogbia (Emerton)

    Drogba, Tevez, Carroll

I'm online for the next half hour or so. Ask me anything!

106.6 value. I tell you, saving those 0.1s count. I've also made my transfers early most weeks to catch rises.

          Your team is good.

I like your keepers a sight more than my own. I just can't spare the transfers to replace them. I'll probably hold on until January and WC them.

Defense is obviously weak. Elmo has to go imo. He's nowhere near starting. Once Bent gets back, Welbeck goes into midfield, and Elmo continues to sit on the bench.

True. Elmo is on his way out next week & Simpson will probably follow shortly after. Relatively happy with the other 3.

Happy with the front 8 tbh.

Fosters fixtures still concern me but Brum seem to pop up with CS here and there regardless of whom they play

Thanks for all the help yesterday guys. My Wild Card team is now (new players in caps):

    Foster, JAASKALEINEN
    VIDIC, KOLAROV, KONCHESKY, Coleman, FOLEY
Fabregas, Van de Vaart, NANI, Adam, FERGUSON
    GYAN, Carroll, Drogba

    My worries:
No Fulham coverage when they have three out of four at home
No Bolton coverage ex. Jaaskalainen when they have favourable fixtures
Drogba. I'm a huge fan but the malaria thing is worrying. Should I swap him for Tevez?
Adam. His time is close to up. Planning to bring Dunn in for him for GW16 but should he go now?

    Any help is much appreciated?

I can't get Tevez without severely weakening my defence. It goes a step too far given that one of the aims of this wild card was to strengthen the back five and give it more balance.

Sort of. It doesn't mean I haven't made mistakes though.

I had Valencia the first week instead of Malouda xD

I've also had at some point: Walcott, Konchesky (during his 1 point days), Arteta and Yaya Toure.

I just hope my recent transfers aren't going to end up being bad ones.

I got Ashley Cole and Nasri in my wildcard which did wonders for my team value.

Had most of those too. I bought Walcott at the beginning of the week he got injured for England. Started with Valencia too and Konchesky at the same time as you. Arteta was also there for a number of weeks.

I made that exact same move (Elmo > Ferdinand), so that's what I'd recommend.

      Carson

      Cashley, Ferdinand, Coleman

Fabregas, Nani(c), Adam, Van Der Vaart

As I've said on here before, Malouda doesn't get points away and doesn't get points against the better teams. Added to this the fact that he takes so much value and is not on pens or free kicks, I'd get rid.

Mind you, Arteta has to go too

I can see why people would do that but it will take more than a tap in against wigan for me to put 12m+ into him. I think this season the smart money is on cheaper strikers and more premium midfielders like vdv, nani, cesc. Drogba, rooney and Torres just aren't doing it this term. 3-5-2 has to be yhe formation of choice imo

The thing is, Rooney is now actually 11.3.

If he scores and looks good against Wigan, then suddenly, 11.3 really isn't that much.

He's only slightly more expensive than Tevez and cheaper than both Drogba and Torres. I would definitely consider him, especially if Drogba still looks down from Malaria.

The big money boys should outscore the cheaper strikers in the long run , simply from being on better teams.

It's a good point with the midfielders. When you add it up, forwards have scored 141 goals this year, which adds up to 564 points from goals. When you add the midfielders, they have scored 147 goals this year, which amounts to 735 points.

I think that's a cracking stat and shows the money is definitely within the midfielders.
