A five-one battering at the home of your bitter rivals is never something to be positive about, but a 39th minute tactical re-think that day at St James’ Park may ironically prove beneficial to Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in the long-term.

Having favoured a 4-5-1 formation since the start of the season, Bruce hauled off out-of-position favourite Elmohamady and replaced the Egyptian with record-signing Asamoah Gyan, resultantly changing his side’s formation to a 4-4-2 to counter a rampant Newcastle. Since then, Gyan has never looked back.

With Darren Bent succumbing to a hamstring injury, Gyan has taken on the mantle as senior member of a Sunderland strike-pairing that sees him joined up-front by on-loan Man United youngster Danny Welbeck, and since that Tyne-Wear derby, his performances have been sensational. The subsequent three games have seen the Ghanaian as the in-form forward in the Premier League, bagging 4 goals and picking up 5 Bonus Points, a fantastic return of 27 points from his only league starts to date. Even Bent’s imminent return to action will surely do little to limit Gyan’s minutes now, with Welbeck the one briefly benched for the first half at White Hart Lane instead of the £13m signing from Rennes as Bruce began with a 4-5-1 before reverting to two up front for the second forty-five.

Sunderland have a great set of fixtures up next, which reads (EVE, wol, WHM, ful, BOL) and are currently on a run of form which sees them with just one defeat in their last eleven games. In addition, they are unbeaten at home all season, despite facing Arsenal, Man City and Man United at the Stadium of Light.

As the first team to score at Stamford Bridge in the league this season, Sunderland will, undoubtedly, be brimming with confidence coming into the weekend and Asamoah Gyan, priced at £7.2m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and owned by a mere 2.5% of managers, has already shown the league leaders he has the pace, power and precise finishing to put any team to the sword.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Anyone else benching Drogba this week? After his being sent home from the internationals due to malaria, I think I'm gonna play Nasri instead of him.

You should play Nasri as well though.

Whats the big obsession with getting Rooney back in all of a sudden..he was shite when he was fit before he got injured and hasnt played a proper game in a good few weeks... if any replacement should be brought in it should be players with form and good fixtures, ie the striker mentioned in the thread title!

We were missing 17 first team players for that tie and would have easily beaten them if Diaby had found Walcott shortly after we took the lead in the Camp Poo. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

With RVP on for the Dutch now, it surely means that stubborn Wenger can't play him on Saturday. To play him would be acceptance that the Dutch call up was a good thing. Can't see him backing down on that.

I really like Walcott tbh (though he is rubbish in this game).

England need to drop the following players forever -

          - Gerrard
          - Lampard
          - Barry
          - Milner
          - Lescott (a player so rubbish its funny) - its amazing how playing left back in a side with two strong centre backs (everton) and scoring a few goals can make you look good
          - SWP (PLEASE)
          - Carrick

And start looking towards the new generation.

IMO a 442 that revolves around Rooney is the only way we will ever be half decent

Disagree with Carrick. This game is crying out for someone who can actually pass. Barry has been atrocious. He was terrible for Utd last year but he's always performed for england. Gerrard's been good recently too.

    How about....

    Carson (Robinson)

    Cole, Ridgewell, Cahill

Bale, Cahill, Fabregas, Nolan (Adam if injured)

    Drogba, Gyan, Hernandez

    It'll cost 8pts? Any views

I would never take an 8 point hit. And for those players even more so.

not for me - inconsistent and rooney back so prob left out. Certainly not worth a points hit to get him in.

Up to you, its what makes this game interesting!

is it just me or are the english media and commentators putting too much pressure on andy carroll. the guy is a great striker and has the potential to be class but if the media keep doing what they usually do it could wreck the guy.

It's not fair- the french are doing all this "passing and moving"- Ithought you were only allowed to lump it 50 yards and then lose posession.....

Mal and Nasri looked lively enough in the first 30mins there.

So its now Arteta > Nani, and Elmo > Kolorov???

Nasri really is an amazing player. He's completely bossing this game with a little help from Malouda and Benzema. Gourcuff has been surprisingly sloppy though...

Carroll, and maybe Ferdinand, are the only England players doing anything of note. Although the reason Carroll has stood out is because the game plan seems to be hoofing it up to him whenever we have the opportunity.

    Stoke mark III.

Nasri really has impressed this year. He seems to have added abit of bulk too which allows him to keep the ball in the hardest of situations.

You get the feeling watching this that England who have been better than France for about 4 years are heading on way and France the other.

Its like how Football should be played versus old school. This France team will go far under Blanc.

    Walcott having a good game!

Maybe I can forgive France for my A in GCSE's if they win tonight!
    Loads of boos.

At least 5 changes to be made at half time by capello to sort it out, but he won't.
