After their thrashing in the Tyne-Wear derby at the tail end of October, Sunderland stunned Chelsea and probably themselves with a fantastic 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. Perhaps this signals the start of a rejuvenated drive in the coming weeks for Steve Bruce’s men and a great time for Fantasy Football managers to draft in some of his revitalised stars? If so, who could be better to shore-up your defence than the Black Cats’ ever-dependable Mr Bramble?

The madcaps out there might be tempted to take a risk and bring in a more offensive option, but Sunderland have not been the most prolific goal-scorers so far this season, racking up just 15 all term. Having only conceded 13 goals, the fourth least in the Premier League, and staunchly keeping five clean sheets in the process, opting for a defender might be a safer bet.

The man whose captain recently backed him for an England call-up and declared him “the signing of the summer” is probably a wiser option when compared with some of his teammates. Ahmed Elmohamady, for example, has an ownership of 20.1% in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and isn’t even a guaranteed starter, having only come on for the last few minutes against Chelsea at the weekend. In comparison, Bramble is owned by just 5.9% of FPL teams and has been ever-present apart from a one-game suspension which saw him skip the home game with Stoke City.

Once poetically labelled a “Shambles”, in recent years Titus has proved to be anything but. In the company of other bargain basement defenders, with a current FPL value of £4.7million, Bramble stands out from the crowd with an impressive 40 FPL points, claiming 6 bonus points along the way too. An increase in Sunderland’s momentum and a manageable run of fixtures (EVE, wol, WHM, ful, BOL, mun), now could prove to be the perfect time to invest in the in-form centre-back.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

so is it better to switch zhirkov to alex or bosingwa or ferreira?? long term and short term. dont want to do alex now and then back to bosingwa or something. how many weeks do you think wel get out of alex before he has his op.

or should i just forget about chelsea defence and go for some other... was thinking united but with 6.2 you cant really buy a sure starter. already have koralov

I've given up trying to get a cheap Chelsea defender.

Had Alex and got rid for Elmo a while ago. Then got Bosingwa in when he played against Wolves and he didn't play again until I got rid for Alex.

Chelsea then lost and Alex got injured so I got in Zhirkov, Chelsea lost again and now he's been dropped 🙂

My own fault for poor decisions. I'll now be getting in kolarov instead.

Yeah could be a good shout, Bolton have only kept 1 clean sheet all season though.

            Was thinking the same.

He has highest bonus points out of defenders. 1 clean sheet to his name is worrying but an easy run of fixtures.

Then again there are safer options for only a bit more such as Jags, Hangeland and Ridgewell.

I wouldn't long term, but I honestly think we are going to struggle against Bolton. We're reliant on Guthrie and Smith to replace Barton and Tiote, not really an ideal set of circumstances.

Yeah, it does seem like a bit of a wasted transfer but Boltons fixtures seem to be more favourable than Newcastles over the coming weeks.

Then again, if Elmander doesn't stop this only scoring away from home malarky then it's no good getting him in anyway.

Yeah I know I know. But Malouda is bugging me, done sweet F.A for weeks. I was going to pull that transfer a while ago and didn't.

I'm losing my lead at the top of my mini league and everyone has either Bale or mainly VDV.

VDV just seems like someone who can score points against anyone.

On Nani vs. Fabs for Captain, I'm thinking quality of opposition might be offset by Arsenal creating more than United at the moment, and Fabregas being a better player than Nani is.

Also, in this fixture last year, Spurs came very negative and got beat 3 nil, so I'm thinking Harry will decide to have a go this time - and get beat 4-2.

Okay, I am choosing to save my second freebie for next week, team is:

    Foster
    Jagielka/Vidic/Boateng
    Fabregas/Nani(C)/Adam/VDV/Albrighton
    Elmander/Drogba

    Krul/Piquionne/Simpson/Elmo

3.0 in the bank, good to go?

Seeing Phil Jagielka at rightback makes me cringe now - even if it is a fictional backline.

      Great team, wrong captain 😉

I know, I know. It's obviously a really close one. Team form - Fabs, individual form - Nani, Opposition - Spurs better than Wigan - but NL derby factor and Spurs backline point toward an open match.

Tbh my decision is made very easy - I'm 6th in a league with three non-Fabs owners ahead of me, along with a United fan and a Spurs fan who will almost certainly captain Nani.

I'm having big problems with my team. Although currently top of my mini league, I'm being caught up way too fast. Anyway, what advice would you give for this team for the next few weeks...

    Schwartzer (Foster)

    Jags Cashley Bramble (Coleman, Elmo)

    Jarvis(C) Nani Nasri Cahill Albrighton

    Berbatov Drogba (Obina)

    1.1m in the bank

For this week I'm thinking of transfering Jags for Kolarov and going 3-5-2. The only issue is I've got Coleman, Bramble and Cahill almost cancelling each other out in the same game.

      Minge and Simpson for definite.

Plus either Adam or Carroll, and either Jags or Jones.

The decision could end up being made for you if Brunt and Adam both miss out.

Laughable that one player apparently getting unjured made you take a 4pt hit to sell one of the highest points scorers in the game and a guaranteed starter.

Guess it's time to ship Elmo out.

Elmo for Bardsley / Cahill / Onouha?

I'm thinking Cahill as a bonus point magnet and easy run in but I'd rather keep some money in the bank to buy VDV next week.

The problem I have with Cahill is only 1 cleanie all season so far. If he was scoring it would be one thing but really, at the moment anyway, all he seems to be able to offer you is bonus points.

Bardsley is cheap as chips. If Sunderland are at home he has a good chance of cleanies. Nothing exciting but he's a fairly good safe pick.

Onouha will get you attacking points and he could be the new Elmo.

However, if he plays then Elmo is by far the best value Sunderland defender. Which makes the current uncertainty around him even more vexing.

I'm inclined to hold onto Elmo for a bit longer and see if he starts this week before I bin him, and ship out someone like Williamson instead.

Nani v Fab captain is too close to call for me.

On the Nani side - he has been more consistent, plays further forward, weaker opposition

On the Fab site - his class and record last season, he may well be fresher (though perhaps not fitter), on pens (unless RvP is on the field)

I am going with Nani - just - but I could yet change my mind!

Spurs have no Huddlestone, so will be a little muddled in midfield, also with Nasri playing well will have their hands full.

Got armband on Nani at the moment but Fabs is a good call. Arsenal should do some damage to that leaky Spurs defence.

There should be a lot of goals in that one. I can't see a goalfest at OT.
