Harry Redknapp and Tottenham fans’ worst fears could soon be thrust upon them after it was reported Rafael Van der Vaart could face a month on the sidelines as a result of the hamstring problem that forced him off the field after just 12 minutes against Liverpool on Sunday. The Dutchman has been a revelation this season for Spurs, scoring 6 goals and making 5 assists in a series of outstanding Premier League displays that have seen him regarded as a close-to-essential acquisition amongst many Fantasy Football Managers.

The length of the injury has yet to be confirmed by Tottenham though Harry Redknapp is understandably frustrated with the loss of one of his key players…

“Rafa felt it tear, so that doesn’t look too good. It’s so disappointing for Rafa. He keeps picking up little injuries. It’s probably because he’s missed a pre-season or was away at the World Cup and not played many games. When your fitness is a bit low it’s hard to get up to speed. He keeps getting little nicks.”

Considering Van der Vaart didn’t make his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) debut till gameweek 4, his rise in price has been mightily impressive, jumping £1m in value (from his starting price of £7.5m to his current £8.5m) in the subsequent 11 gameweeks, with 29.4% of Fantasy Managers currently owning him. Food for thought, then, for those who snapped the ex-Real Madrid man up before that dramatic price-hike. Long-term VDV owners certainly have the biggest dilemma: will they keep him benched or make the move that, for some, could wipe as much as £0.5m off the value of their squads?

Sir Paulos is currently working on a substantial article delving into the merits of midfield alternatives, but two immediate stand-out ready-made replacements are Morten Gamst Pederson and Tim Cahill. Pederson has been declared 100% fit after missing Blackburn’s 7-1 slaughtering at Old Trafford and our recent Watchlist article details why the in-form man has the potential to be a cracking acquisition over the next few weeks.

Tim Cahill at times seems to be single-handedly keeping the Toffees season on course by relentlessly popping up with vital goals. He should be thought of as nothing more than a stop-gap replacement until Van der Vaart is back in action though, as the Australian takes leave of absence from the Premier League shortly to participate in the Asia Cup, and consequently may be out of domestic action for as much as six weeks.

David Moyes recently spoke on the matter, admitting:

They are due to take Tim in mid to late December and depending how far they go in the tournament will determine how long he is away. I’m trying to delay him going until January and will do the best I can.

Tottenham’s last week has quite possibly been their greatest under Harry Redknapp; they beat their old rivals in the North London derby, produced a memorable comeback against Liverpool and qualified for the knock-out stages of the Champions League. With this momentum behind them you wouldn’t rule them out winning the vast majority of their next six league games (bir, CHE, blp, avl, NEW, FUL). The loss of Van der Vaart is unquestionably damaging, but the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Luka Modric have all shown in recent weeks that they’re more than capable of keeping the White Hart Lane midfield in shape.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

If he is out for a month, the loss of money isn't too big an issue. He'll plummet by 0.4/0.5 minimum if he is out for that long.

Do we have any idea when we'll have a more definite timescale?

Once Tottenham's fixtures clean up, Bale is looking good.
I'll throw this out there, pick one:
    N'Zogbia
    Bale
    Kuyt

I know what you mean, seems their are many options but not very good ones. Like could punt on David Dunn but he is injury prone, Kuyt has good fixtures but he's pants, Bale should be good but I just have bad memories of when he got 2s every week. At the moment I'm heading to double up on Arsenal with Arshavin & Nasri!

Six words: Already have Tevez, Carroll and Drogba.

Carroll > Bent was my plan for this week, as he has outstandign fixtures, but I'm starting to waver, as its looking like a hit. None of which helps with VDV. Think I may go MGP to keep up the 3 letter acronym theme.

Well I've already done Drogba OUT, Bent IN. The fixtures are just too good to ignore, along with Drogba's poor form.

And with my other free, I'm going to do Arteta/VDV OUT, MGP IN. But I'll wait until the end of the week before doing that.

You only got one free transfer then?

guys who do you reckon it will be worth getting rid of first? VDV or Arteta (now suspended for 3 games), i'm only looking to get rid of one this week really to avoid taking a 4 point hit! My VDV sale price is at 8.0 and Arteta's is at 8.2

    Left on previous post.
A bit of help with a couple of things please guys. I don’t normally play more than 3 defenders but this week I don’t think I have a lot of choice, although I think defence could all do well.
    Team is:

    Robbo
    Konchesky, Kolarov, Rafael, Cole
    Nani, Nasri, N’Zogbia
    Tevez, Rooney, Carroll
    Bench
Carson, Van Der Vaart, Ferguson, Coleman

    1. Would anyone line up diferently? (no more transfers)
    2. Who would you Captain?
    3. What to do about VdV? got him at 7.5m, would sell at 8m but have to pay 8.5m to get him back.
    Thanks for any opinions.

I think a good option is to get rid of VDV for Mortem Gamst Pedersen, thats what I think I am doing if VDV is definately out for a month he should see a fall in his value by the time u would consider bringing him back in and MGP has good fixtures over the next month.

      1. It's the line-up I'd choose.
      2. I'd personally captain Tevez. Loads of choices though (Rooney, Nani, Nasri,...)
      3. If VDV is out for a month, as someone above said, you may as well just sell him. He'll be worth close to 8m by the time you want him back.

His price is only protected once he comes back from injury.

I believe the threshold is slightly different when injured (could be mistaken here), but his price will definitely drop.

If you don't need his replacement (which you're right you probably don't) I'd probably leave it. If he drops .2 you only lose .1. Probably not a disaster.

Nice Gravatar Wild Rover. Line-up looks fine. My captaincy choices are the worst in the known universe,so I'll spare you that. I also got VDV at 7.5 and intend to get rid.I Expect him to drop .2 or3 at least so buying him back is as if original cost was 7.7 or 8.Plus his replacement may increase as much and is points option. I hate a non-playing bench. 🙂

To be honest, it's a big risk, but if the right reports come out it might not be a terrible transfer.

Yep, I don't see no other option really... I will have 6.3m in the bank after I have done VDV -> Dunn, so perhaps Arteta -> Arshavin? Or get rid of Carroll? Its annoying because the only players I really want are strikers but in reality, I need to sell Arteta and VDV, and as I only have 1 transfer, well its an 8 point hit to do the three I want.

I'd just like to apologise to VDV owners as i brough him in for Malouda on Sat night last week on a knee jerk, and obviously he got injured. Its all my fault!!

P.s. look at my team to see who to avoid this week. P.s. Done Nolan to Nasri, so looking forward to the Cup injury tomorrow!!

Fair enough. I had taken the blame for getting him in for the weekend, so maybe we can share it.

oshea has been a joke but naming him twice is harsh ... maybe terry would be better suited....

Got rid of him last night, so am pleased that there doesn't seem to be much chance of him making a return any time soon.

He needs an extended break anyway... He's clearly not been 100% at all this season, just Martin O'Neill Harry Redknapp kept forcing him to play.

This is getting rediculous. Now I have fabs Vdv and Coleman to ship out. Thinking of just doing fabs and Coleman to Kolarov and nasri. Thorts?

Tricky picking between Bent and Gyan. It comes down to the fact that I couldn't really use the extra cash in midfield with the likes of VdV and Fabs unavailable and Cahill soon to depart. So even though I don't think there is much in it, Bent may just about justify the extra outlay.

Bent will be on penalties, which just about swings it for me. And I can't find a way to use the extra cash really.
