Jamie Carragher’s 450th Premier League appearance was definitely one to forget last Sunday, with the centre-half suffering a dislocated shoulder in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham. His replacement Sotirios Kyrgiakos may have been on the end of a rollicking from Carragher for being slow to get warmed up to replace him, but with the Liverpool vice-captain now reportedly sidelined for up to three months and a long-lasting calf injury still keeping Daniel Agger out of the running, you can be sure that the big Greek will be ready and raring to go in this unexpectedly prolonged run at the heart of Roy Hodgson’s defence.

It is the Reds favourable upcoming fixtures (AVL, new, FUL, blp, WOL, BOL) that make Kyrgiakos such a particularly alluring prospect. After a torrid start to the season Liverpool have finally -albeit at a stuttering rate- started to climb the Premier League table and Hodgson must surely see a promising pre-2011 run as the perfect opportunity to get their season back on course and draw a line through what has been a problematic year for the Anfield men.

At a colossal 6ft 4in, Kyrgiakos is always an aerial threat and has scored two goals in just six games so far this season, finding the net in both his Anfield league appearances. With the club still awaiting Fernando Torres’ bravura performance, Joe Cole having a frustrating period with form and niggling injuries and Steven Gerrard temporarily sidelined, they will rely on the lofty Greek to be a menace in the box at every given set piece.

Priced at just £5.1 million on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Kyrgiakos could be the ideal bargain defender to allow you to spend your budget on a big money move in midfield or attack. Also something of a Bonus Points magnet, he’s been awarded the maximum three points on two out of his five full appearances, which -considering the current lack of clean sheets knocking about- perhaps gives him the nod over similarly-priced team mates Paul Konchesky and Martin Skrtel for anyone considering Liverpool defensive cover.

His Fantasy ownership, a mere 1.1%, only adds to Kyrgiakos’ appeal, suggesting he could well just turn out to be the perfect “differential” over the next few Gameweeks as the season heats up for the Christmas period.

Which 3 defenders should i start out of Vidic, Boateng, Jones, Bardsley? Always a risk Boateng may not get picked. Also, Foster over Al Habsi even though it's Spurs?

Can't see that having an impact really.
The police seemed to handle it pretty well, and it wasn't really that bad anyway.
The more important news that FIFA delegates woke up to this morning was the Wikileaks missives about Russia being a "mafia state".
I think it's between us and Spain/Portugal, and we should pick up some of those Russia and Holland/Belgium votes to pull it off.

Argh, I am thinking of choosing Dunn over MGP for next 3-4, how many times have I been burned by this guy in the past, and I still come back to him, he can be fantasy gold if he stays fit, and the fact he has played back to back 90 minutes is swaying my decision, but the man is made of glass, I am just not convinced that MGP can maintain this kindof form, Dunn is OOP and is on pens.

That being said, MGP's delivery has been awesome at times, and that will probably stay consistent.

Anyone else want Kyrgiakos and Kolarov but can't get them in because one of their mids gets injured every d*mn week? Can't think either of those guys is worth a hit - but perhaps a few snow cancellations this weekend will be a blessing in disguise cos it's suddenly worth four points to get someone, anyone on the pitch?

I'm itching to do it, I just know in my bones it's not going to work. Both those defs look good for the next 5 or so, but every time I take a speculative hit like that the guy I bench who would have played does unexpectedly well. One of the lessons of this season for me is that sometimes I need protecting from what I want, wants change very quickly in FPL - needs remain pretty consistent.

Me too (Kolorov). I'm thinking just take the 4 pt hit this week and get it over with. I know people always say don't take a hit for a defender as they need a clean sheet just to cover the hit but, to me, it is about more than just one GW but the advantage they may give over the nxt few GW's (compared to not bringing them in). If that makes sense.

Anyway I took an 8 point hit last week and still got a green arrow inside the top 5k so not afraid of taking a well thought out hit!

I've sort of made a rule for myself...to only have captains who are playing at home. If nothing else, it reduces the options I have to choose between. So Tevez for me, although tempted by Drogba.

Am I right in concluding that getting rid of Arteta or VDV should be my priority and not Elmo? Out of those two, Arteta is currently top of the list

The other important decision being made today could well see FIFA give the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. How mental is that?

It's up around 50 degrees at that time of year, Doha is the City where all the games will be played (not sure if that's good or bad), there are about 4 pubs in Doha, all in hotels, it's about 10 quid a pint, you are not allowed to take your top off in Qatar, you cant hold hands with a woman in public in Qatar, Al Jazeerah broadcast from Qatar and they had technical problems showing the SA World Cup so half the Middle East watched fuzzy screens which was quite frustrating.

        I see some potential pitfalls.

I am going with Tev Jonty, I think a few (including me) got burned with a couple of 1 point performances at home to 'easy' opposition from him.

Bolton are useless at the back.

I agree, Bolton will concede and Tevez has assisted or scored most of their goals. Balotelli back fills me with even more confidence. A few Tevez assists I think if Mancini goes for two up front.

there;s still mixing with bands at the Butlins at Minehead. Most stay in the chalets. Exchanged hellos with Stephen Malkmus at the Pavement one this year. I felt like I'd just met indie royalty. The Breeders one was even more chummy - the Deal sisters were in the audience or playing on stage at virtually every band. Camber was the best tho' -Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Soft Bulletin era Flaming lips blew my tiny mind.

this May is the first one I'm not going to in four years. Animal Collective are curating. I quite like them, but have seen them at ATP before and kind of know what I'll be getting...some New York DJs mixed with pschedelic ish indie bands. I'll check out the next year though. The joy of ATP is discovering new bands. They are doing a Portishead one in London next year tho'...could be good.
