The Watchlist – our mid-term playing recommendations – were updated yesterday with a minor tweak following earlier today. You can find these rankings in your right sidebar on the frontpage of the site.

This week shows plenty of movement in the Defensive rankings with Liverpool and Blackburn’s recent clean sheets prompting further climbs for their assets. While the Midfield top five remains untouched, there is a shuffle amongst the Forwards where Carlos Tevez pays the price for his one game ban and Andy Carroll falls from our top three. That means it’s Liverpool again who climb to the top of this table…

Let’s start between the posts where Joe Hart and Paul Robinson stand their ground at the pinnacle of the Goalkeeper rankings – form and fixtures keep them top of the pile. Pepe Reina, an expensive option but with superb fixtures and 4 clean sheets in 7, is their nearest rival. Craig Gordon and Ben Foster continue to offer value below him.

Aleksandar Kolarov’s ban and subsequent missing Gameweek this weekend sees him toppled in our Defender rankings with Liverpool’s Solios Kyrgiakos assuming his mantle with his strong fixtures, Bonus Point potential and a hefty goal threat. Outstanding form and decent fixtures has Leighton Baines climbing to second, with team-mate Seamus Coleman, back in favour on the right of midfield, our highest new entry.

Chris Samba’s fixtures has him installed in third spot with Kolarov holding on, along with United’s Rafael, to complete our top five defenders. Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Bolton’s Gary Cahill provide some low and mid-price options further down.

There’s no movement in the Midfield top five, with Nani and Samir Nasri holding to top spots despite a run of difficult fixtures to come. West Brom’s Chris Brunt – with strong form – and City’s David Silva – with kind fixtures – get closest. Florent Malouda is a major casualty of Chelsea’s continued slump as he drops down the rankings with poor form and an array of tough opponents to come. Birmingham’s Craig Gardner whose goal threat overshadows a difficult run of forthcoming fixtures, is our highest new consideration.

Look out for a shake-up in Midfield soon – the likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Cesc Fabregas are all due back from injuries within the fortnight. Their arrival back in the Watchlist will certainly cause a major shuffle and could impact on the potential of others – particularly Samir Nasri and, in the Forward rankings, Didier Drogba; both players will have their role on set-pieces reduced and their spot-kick duties will also come under threat.

We also have to consider the Asian Cup and the absence of Tim Cahill during this spell. We know that Cahill will depart before the tournament in January to join up with the Socceroos and the latest from David Moyes indicates that this will be in the New Year which could well mean another five Gameweeks. Cahill remains high in the Watchlist then but that’s likely to change next week once the home fixture with Wigan has passed.

Moving up front and, like Kolarov, Carlos Tevez suffers a drop in the Forward rankings off the back of his suspension for Gameweek 17, with Fernando Torres taking top spot with a run of kind home opponents to come. Expect that pair to contend the top two for several weeks, unless Drogba can rediscover form or Dimitar Berbatov/Wayne Rooney catch fire.

Lower down, Newcastle’s Andy Carroll suffers his biggest drop of the season to fall from the top three with Bolton’s Johan Elmander and West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie the big climbers with form and fixtures falling nicely for them. The likes of Mario Balotelli, Asamoah Gyan and Jermain Defoe all enjoy climbs. The latter should have confidence off the back of last night’s brace but has Chelsea and two away games to come next, which tempers his appeal somewhat.

As always, keep an eye on the rankings leading up to the weekend – a full update will arrive post Gameweek on Tuesday but there could be daily changes up until then once the team news starts dripping in later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I need a replacement for Drogba, I see Chelsea really struggling over the next 3 GW's. Money isn't an issue. Whom should I bring in?? Favouring Torres at the mo.

I'm surprised Torres isn't getting more of a shout for Captain this week, Newcastle are rocking and he could get a hatrick. Cahill is unlikely to get more than one goal or assist. This is coming from an Evertonian as well.

Well he's third in the poll, just how much higher did you expect him to be? Nani and Cahill have a bit of form at least. And talking of Cahill being unlikely to get more than a goal or an assist, Torres hasn't exactly been banging them in in bunches has he? I think he's only scored more than one in a game once this season and only got into double figure points once.

Bos to Kyrgiakos for my money.. drog and torres have similar chances of scoring and you don'w want three big money strikers. There's no reason to get rid of carroll other than he's cheap, which is a terrible reason

        Lol yeah cheers!

I think Bos to Kyrgiakos is my move, even if it does mean he's against Barton and Carroll.

Toon without their CB's but I guess Spurs aren't exactly tight at the back.

Drog to Torres next week though, so I will have 3 big money striker ;p

Me neither. Last week he was in for the season, essential, most consistent points scorer around.

Understandably the situation may have changed with this manager business, but at least give it a game or two to see what the effect on the pitch is.

    I'm holding tight for now.

Anyone been watching the ESPN 30 for 30 docs on ESPN Classic? Seen quite a few of them already but looking forward to the one about the Tyson fight and Tupac getting killed. And the one on Jordan.

If you get a chance to see the Reggie Miller one watch it, it's awesome!

That fantasy sport one is great. It's all about rotisserie baseball leagues but great to watch. I've seen most of the first dozen or so, some guy posted them on YouTube (in about 7 different parts!) but they got taken down. My favs out of those though were the Reggie Miller one, the Ricky Williams one and the Allen Iverson one is pretty good too.

rotisserie baseball leagues? what are they? i'm expecting something about fantasy football/ baseball etc
i've only seen about 3 as i never know when they're on so it's usually luck if i switch on to one. saw the escobars one and the ricky williams one too

They go one about the name in the doc, think it's something to do with the restaurant they were in when they came up with the game.

I think the basic format is you have say 10 teams in a league and say 8 categories that you score in. The player with the most in that category (say home runs) would get 10 points and the person with the least 1 point. You do the same for all categories and then add up the total points, 80 being the max in this case and 8 the lowest. Or something like that...

Fantasy baseball is great . I knew nothing about the game when i joined up, but the fantasy is great , its all about stats so if your good at the fantasy football then the transition isnt too tough.
I like the format where no other team owns your players. I wish sometimes the fantasy football was like that.
Start of the season theres a draft where all the players are auctioned off , would love to have that option available for fantasy football . Its annoying when you buy a player and the week after everyone else has him too

Yeah i play it too, bit more hardcore than FPL though as you really need to look at it daily. I'm surprised Yahoo haven't offered a fantasy football/soccer game yet that uses the same format as the rest of their fantasy games (apart from their current fantasy football which is naff).

We used to play fanasty football that way at school but we used an auction instead of a draft. Great fun but takes a fair bit of organisation

I think there a few places that do an auction for football, would work well for leagues with under 20 players . Andy Caroll would of been a great auction pick up at start of season

not much in the way of 8.0 and under - Bale (will have vdv), MGP, Zogs, Nolan, Adam

Thinking of a change in GK. My current two are - Foster & Krul. Foster has been phenomenal but his fixtures are really tough.

Thinking of either Schwarzer or Begovic to be paired up with Gordon. Transferring out Krul this GW for Schwarzer/ Begovic. Which would you recommend? Any chance of Begovic being displaced in goal?

Why no love for Glen Johnson in the watchlist? He's not a rotation risk and has scored well since he came back.

I'm thinking Johnson in for Williamson and Cahill for Arsh.

Is there a better move than Cahill? My closest rival in my league has him and I don't like having too many of the same players.
