Our Watchlist player rankings have once again been updated for the coming Gameweek, offering you a view on our current thinking when it comes to mid-term player selection.

It’s a steady week with the top positions all holding firm across the board, with contrasting fortunes for Man City’s assets as Aleksandar Kolarov, Yaya Toure and David Silva enjoy high placings, while Carlos Tevez drifts in limbo, out of our current thinking. Tim Cahill is another of our previously high ranking players suffering this week – he drops out with the Asian Cup in January depriving us of his talents beyond the next couple of Gameweeks…

The top three in the Goalkeeper’s rankings hold firm as fixtures continue to fall in favour of Joe Hart, Paul Robinson and Pepe Reina. A host of new entries threaten their position, with Wigan’s Ali Al Habsi the highest of the bunch off the back of his impressive shut-out at Goodison and good fixtures to come; his price point also gives him the edge over rivals Heurelho Gomes, Robert Green and Scott Carson. The big two – Edwin Van der Sar and Petr Cech suffer drops are sandwiched in that pack, along with long-term favourite Ben Foster who faces a stiff run of opposition in the coming weeks – although he does have three home encounters in the next four to provide some comfort for his owners.

The Defender rankings also remain stable at the top with Liverpool’s Sotirios Kyrgiakos holding his position with kind home opponents and a significant goal threat. City’s Aleksandar Kolarov comes straight back into our top five following his one-match suspension – he too benefits from obliging opponents in the forthcoming Gameweeks. Leighton Baines, Chris Samba and the value presented by United’s Rafael, complete our current top five.

A second Liverpool defender presents a big money gamble – Glen Johnson doesn’t carry the set-piece threat of team-mate Kyrgiakos, but will likely be key attacking threat down the right over Liverpool’s three Anfield clashes in the next four. Like Kyrgiakos, he could well have a goal or two in him, but with assists thrown in.

Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz, Tottenham’s Alan Hutton and West Brom’s Gonzalo Jara offer value further down the rankings with climbs and new entries this week. All three have promising runs of opponents to come, with some attacking potential on offer.

The Midfield to five stays intact, with the exception of Everton’s Tim Cahill who drops out of mid-term reckoning with the Asian Cup tournament in January, giving him just two more matches to come in the forthcoming month or so.

Nani continues to lead the way with some level of consistency in his scoring these days. City’s pairing of Yaya Toure and David Silva both rank highly below him. Toure is a new entry off the back of his goal/assist/Bonus return in the win over West Ham, which, with an FPL price tag of just 5.2, gives him the edge of team-mate Silva. The Spaniard simmers below the top five following his assist at Upton Park; both enjoy a kind run of opponents over the next six. Charles N’Zogbia’s fixtures also appear to give him a platform for his usual stream of steady returns with Bonus Points thrown in – he is another climber this week.

A host of new entries follow, as the likes of Frank Lampard and Cesc Fabregas all come back into our thinking following injury. Expect climbs for them next week once we see them established back in first team action this weekend. Steven Gerrard and Rafael Van der Vaart are still very much injury doubts – they could make an appearance later this week when we have more news on their progress prior to the weekend.

Up front, Fernando Torres holds the top spot, despite failing to ignite at St James’ Park. The three Anfield matches in the next four should give him the potential to return and is enough to hold off a significant charge from Darren Bent, who also has a strong run of opponents to aid his points tally.

Jermain Defoe and Wayne Rooney occupy their highest positions of the season, kept in fourth and fifth by Andy Carroll’s consistency. Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega offers value, along with West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie – only an injury doubt prevents him from pushing on further up the rankings. The Bolton pairing of Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies suffer big drops – they will face Sunderland, Liverpool and Chelsea in the next four Gameweeks – that’s three of the current top five defences, all away from home.

Carlos Tevez remains out of our current rankings while we wait more news from Eastlands on his situation. Expect him to rank very highly if we get confirmation of his availability for the Everton clash on Monday. The Watchlist will be updated once we know more on him later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I don't think Mancini has much faith in Adebayor and Jo, so he will surely play on Monday. The whole reason why they want to keep him is because they want to use him, and it would be silly for them to fight to hold onto him, and yet then go ahead and 'punish' him by leaving him out; that could be counter-productive.

I expect that after Tevez and Mancini have had talks on Friday, he will lose the captaincy and he will be persuaded to stay until at least the end of the season and then both parties will re-evaluate. I don't think there will be problems with CT's motivation, as they will be involved in a title battle, and he's been clearly feeling this way for a long time and it hasn't affected his points scoring.

This is not something that has just come about in the last week, so Tevez playing 'angrily' is something that he's used to.

Looks like you don't want to double up on Man City defenders with Hart & Toure. I would play Toure over Coleman. May as well replace Toure as you'd most likely play Hart every week.

    Bench Vidic or Cashley?
At the moment I think to bench Vidic. I presume I have to play Kolarov and Konchesky.

We aren't even sure of VDV is playing this week. Plus they are away at Blackpool, without the undersoil heating. Way too risky. And if Tevez starts, he'll be trying his absolute hardest to give his fans one last show before he goes into semi-retirement or whatever he's going to do. Don't trade him out.

      Szczesny on the penalty:

"I did prepare myself for a Rooney penalty before the game. I actually decided to try to delay him, show him my presence and hope for the best.

"Maybe my presence put him off and made him miss it. It's obviously a mental battle between the goalkeeper and the striker, a psychological battle, so I tried to stand off my line for as long as possible, until the referee put me on the line. Then I made myself big and thankfully he missed."

Just casted my vote for FFS in that soccerlens poll. While I was there I had a look at rival Never Captain Nicky Butt for the first time. I was impressed with the layout and the easy to read stats, but the community seemed to be full of one bloke swearing and claiming to have carnal knowledge of everyone's mothers. This for me is where FFS nails it. The forums here offer genuinely insightful posts, full answers to questions and only occasionally descend into violent swearing handbags. Good luck Mark and colleagues.

I do often wonder whether the site would be better off without Akers and his tiresome Scout Cup organisation that gives everyone here an extra bonus a couple of times a year. Or when Akers takes over Dugout Discussions so I can concentrate on rescuing what's left of my life at weekends.

What's wrong with Akers, what does he say that's unprofessional?

I think he posts honestly, gives decent opinions, comes up with ideas such as CAR that was fun to read about over the summer, and of course goes to great lengths to put on all the Cup competitions.

I thought the 'advice for joining CAR' stunt in the Summer was a massive low point in the sites history aswel as the constant CAR debacle and his general posting, basically the whole package.

I always thought that if people didn't like the 'CAR' thing, then they just didn't reply to the CAR posts, and only replied to the posts that interested them.

That's certainly what I'm like on here, I will read most of the posts, (but skip over some of the non-gravatar posters), and reply to any where I feel I have an opinion to add or something to bring to the table.

Like with your post, I read it, disagreed wholeheartedly and so thought that I would say so. Fair play for you putting your feelings out there about this site, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and I'm sure that not every criticism you levy is unjustified, but to single out Akers like this is wrong, as he contributes a lot here.

Any glaringly obvious transfer advice for my team this week? [linked]

I'm loathe to transfer out Chamakh with a nice home fixture... but Chamakh>Tevez would help hedge my points against lower teams in a big money mini league which finishes in 2 weeks...

    Can't afford Chamakh>Torres without a pts hit

    Who to bench this week?

    T.Cahill (mcy)

    or

    A.Carroll (bir)

My gut says to bench Cahill as City is more of a fortress than Birmingham these days, and, Carroll’s form seems unstoppable.

But to bench the 2nd highest point scoring midfielder in the game? Madness?

    Foster (Carson)
    Vidic Kolarov Konchesky (Coleman Simpson)
    Nani VdV Nasri Bale (Ferguson)
    Rooney Tevez Carroll

    ...Would my team benefit from:

    1: VdV > Pedersen
    2: VdV > Brunt
    3: Simpson > P.Jones
    4: Simpson > Bardsley

Hmmm, going to make two transers this week and unsure who to sub out in one instance and who to sub in in the other instance.

Kolarov in; either Bosingwa or Jagielka out
Tevez out; either Defoe or Balotelli in.

Am favouring losing Jagielka and getting Defoe at the moment.

Yes, I know, In like Flynn - I had a screaming match with their marketing manager. Renault refused to cough up the promotional dosh, and she was too lazy to go out and get another sponsor, basically. Finally, the Editor, whose brother I know, couldn't care less, and seemed to think it a side show, not worthy of his consideration. Mind you, judging by the commentators he's hired, he's pretty useless ...

yeah good point he is as good value as you can get, only thing is I may want to play the cheap mid instead of n'zogbia occasionally and cleverley won't give me that option, though zog does have good fixtures to hold me till wildcard time. Would give me some extra cash in the bank too. Cheers tosey, food for thought.

This doesn't really clear up whether he will be picked or not though. However, I think he will be picked regularly, so we should be fine.

I had some sympathy for Tevez when it was made out to be about missing his daughters etc, particularly when his estranged wife wouldn't move over here to be with him, but then I keep reading about things like commercial deals and money that are the actual reasons...

Yeah i am unsure what to believe with tevez. I hope the reason behind it is his love for his daughters and the fact he misses them.

City seem to think it is this Joorabchian guy that is behind it all, as presumably he is the go-between for the Board and Tevez.

Surely Tevez has been missing his 5 year old daughter for 5 years now, and I don't think there were any complaints of missing his family while he was at West Ham and United, or even early into his City days.

Joorabchian was the agent for Mascherano, who got a move after refusing to play for Liverpool.
And Mascherano and Tevez left West Ham in controversial circumstances. Something about the player's registration not being owned by West Ham...
            Enough said.

Yeah, I'm sure it's very annoying that you are up so high.

The FPL players will be ranked in something like a Normal distribution, so your 'minor' fluctuations are the equivalent of someone moving between 200k and 400k, and yet they would deem themselves to be inconsistent. When you're that high up, you only move up and down a few places as the density of players around you that have a similar points total, is much less.

Why is everyone selling Drogba? He has two tough games then has a great 4 game run and has scored in his last two games. I’m looking to buy him back after arsenal game.

He has one tough game against United. He basically always score at least once against Arsenal. He's our biggest nemesis.

A penalty & a Gomes howler. He's looked off the pace for a while, but maybe the return of His Fatness will change his fortunes. He's an expensive luxury imo.

Hello guys! I cant decide between these players: Yaya, Brunt or Nzogba. They all have relatively easy fixtures. Yaya is the cheapest but he's rather inconsistent with scoring and assisting. Brunt is incredible but I dont think that he can keep us his good run. I think that Zog is going to explode but then again Wigan struggle to score goals.

I think N'zogbia is the best option atm, brunt is only one yellow off a suspension (though that becomes void in Jan) and Yaya just isn't as good going forward as the other two regardless of his position/team.

I have two transfers with 0.1 in the bank Thinking of Nolan-->Nzogbia

        Foster
        Givet, Dann, Vidic(Jagielka, Foley)
        Nzogbia, Cahill, Nani, Bale(Lee)
        Carroll, Tevez, Drogba

I'm thinking of making another transfer. Jagielka out for??? or Lee out for????

Is having Tevez, Silva and Kolarov over the Christmas period, overkill?

I can see City winning most of the games that they have over the next few weeks.

Yeah, particularly with the niggles that he has, I'm sure that Harry views him as someone to nurse now, as he needs him for the big games, like what VDV did against Arsenal, and with the deluge of options he has in midfield, especially if they get Pienaar too, then he can afford to rotate.

Plus resting VDV helps keep Defoe/Pav/Crouch happy, as if he only plays one of them each match, the other two will get pissed off, but sometimes playing two of the three will get them all more game-time.

Is it something you are considering?

I think Silva could come into his own now, he has nailed down a starting place and City's results have been positive when he plays. I know he hasn't set the world on fire with his current G's and A's but maybe that is because he was just settling in and trying to get comfortable playing more centrally.

This has kept him under the radar, and I remember that Tevez was average at this point last season, as at the start of last season it was all about Adebayor, and Tevez took a back seat until the mid-point, and then over Christmas he was on fire in Ade's absence due to the ACON. Maybe Silva will be similar.

Seems to me silva's role in the team is all about movement and creativity, which isn't the direct approach wanted for fpl. When AJ plays he seems much more direct which leads to more shots on goal and dangerous crosses, hence more goals, assists and fpl points.
Silva is class but I'm not sure he will ever be good value in fpl, I'd rather yaya even though he's half the attacking player that silva is.

Bent at the start of the season was like the 09/10 Darren Bent, as Gyan wasn't at the club for the first few weeks, and then took time to work his way into contention once he had joined.

Wellbeck was also playing like the Man Utd Wellbeck early on, but now with regular games he is looking in better shape.

Bent will still score goals, but last season he managed 24 goals and was only 7.0M, this season he's 8.5M and will probably only manage 15/16 goals.
