It’s a well-known fact that Sir Alex Ferguson is an advocate of the “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough” school of thinking when it comes to youth development. In Fergie’s eyes, there’s only so far a young player can be carried by alleged “great potential” before he needs to produce the goods. This season, the performances of Rafael da Silva suggest the Brazilian is no longer looked upon as just “a promising full-back” at Old Trafford and is, instead, starting to prove himself an integral member of the Man United first-team.

With John O’Shea, Gary Neville and Wes Brown for competition, Rafael has had a fight on his hands for the right-back slot, but impressive displays, both domestically and in Europe, suggests that the United boss has come to regard him as first-choice. Following a spate of injuries, Rafael has started the last three games for United (picking up an assist and three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points) and the team have scored ten times, conceding just once, as they climbed to the top of the table.

Ferguson was full of praise for the United defence, in particular, following the 1-0 defeat of Arsenal at Old Trafford, saying:

“We defended very well, the back four were fantastic tonight, absolutely magnificent. So with that foundation it always gives us a great chance. I think our form is improving. And, as I say, with the back four playing like that, if they play like that from now on and give us the consistency, then we’re in with a good chance.”

Such words of encouragement should certainly reassure any Fantasy Managers mulling over a move for the youngster. Rafael, subject of a recent Technical Area article, comes in at just £5.6m and has a mere 1.8% ownership, a ridiculously low figure considering United have conceded just four times in their last seven games.

With their next six gameweeks including the Double Gameweek 24 (SUN, bir, wba, STK, tot, BIR & blp), United have a fairly straightforward run over the busy Festive period and investment in their players will no doubt be high. There’s a chance Rafael may not be involved in every single game but with the games coming thick and fast, practically every team in the league will be heavily prone to rotation in lieu of the recent postponements. What’s becoming apparent, though, is that Rafael is proving himself to be a fundamental part of that back four and with Fergie’s seal of approval, is weighing up to be something of a Fantasy Bargain.

According to various forecasts the snow will be fairly light, intermittent, and north of the midlands... So consider the 6 matches being played up north as at mild risk and buy 3 arsenal and 3 fulham players.

There are two big problems with the A-League. Firstly, the quality is pretty crap. I reckon most of the U21 teams around my place could beat some of the teams. I mean, it's the little things. The number of times I've seen a corner not even get into the box and go straight out is frustrating. It also doesn't help when some of the best players in the league (Theo, Muscat, Fowler) are players who are either rejected from Europe or playing in Aus just in search of a quick buck before retirement.

Secondly, there isn't a powerhouse team that at least makes the semi-finals every season. There isn't an equivalent of a Chelsea or Man Utd in the A-League that everyone wants to beat. Some may say this is a good thing, but when the two teams who finished last season (Adelaide and Brisbane) are now the best teams in the comp. While one of the finalists (Sydney) hasn't won 3 times this season. Even though this is incredibly enjoyable to see as a Victory fanatic, we aren't even having a great season.

      That's my two cents

You may not need to make the decision though, as Brunt is struggling witha groin injury and may not play.

However, if all your players start this weekend then benching Etherington is probably the safest move.

He is good value but if he's off next week then its really a wasted transfer.

One week captains rarely work as invariably the player you bring in for that one game tends to decide that this is the game he sucks ass in.

Don't know about a waste of a transfer, I think it's going to be one of the more popular ones this week, but as GD says it might be best to sort out your keeper rotation up until WC2 - it's unglamorous but there could be 20 points in it.

Got a comp starting in GW23 which isn't too far away with the compressed schedule. 50+ entered already. Details in links.

You would probably struggle in this one as you have failed 5 times. Got a Cup around GW30 based mainly on rank which would suit you alot better. 😉

Aye your right about the luck though. FFS cup I believe has burned all of that though, reckon there's none left now. However if I stop making stupid transfers out(chamakh,Barton,Cahill all prior to them getting big point hauls), then I could stand a chance.

GW23 deadline is the 15th Jan so you have a few weeks to decide if you want to join. The hardest part for me in this comp is deleting the knocked out teams after the 1st gameweek. I'll probably have to delete my team aswell. 🙁

I think your front line is too weak, your back 7 are too expensive and you have very few plausible captaincy options. My advice would be to downgrade cech to a keeper who rotates well with robinson (haven't checked but gordon? begovic?), downgrade at least one defender to a 4.0 (foley/jara/simpson), ditch clichy, upgrade chamakh to a big hitter and make one of your front 8 a cheaper - regularly benchable option.

    Idea for a FFS article...

How good are its tips? Look back over the this season (maybe further back) at players tipped ("watchlist" or "on the radar") in articles such as this Rafael one. Then look at their average score over, say, the 6 gameweeks following the article. Then compare this score with the most popular choices in that position (omitting those that were injured or whatever). E.g. if the article tipped Chris Brunt, what were his average weekly scores over the next 6 GWs compared with the most popular midfielders (by ownership) such as VDV, Bale, Nani, Adam, etc? This would show whether using this site beats just going with the crowd and taking the obvious choices.

    What dya think?

Well the usefulness of this site is not in any question, that's for sure, and the element of good or bad fortune really is all you have.

You need a good balance of both obvious choices and differentials, that's it really

right, but the question you posed is not quantifiable!

this site has articles on players who usually are differentials, and by design a differential percentage wise is a risky factor. so by comparing the two you'd win out with the obvious choices nearly every time because a differential has more chance of being rested. there's your answer. go make a team of vdv/nani/nasri/malouda/drogba/carroll/a.cole/gordon/foster/vidic/baines if you want, because there is a list of players probably everyone should have lol

                    it IS quantifiable.

                    players score points - quantifiable

players play a certian number of games - quantifiable

this site has defined a "differential" as "under 2% ownership" - quantifiable

my new year's resolution is going to be to only argue with people who understand the words they use.

your question was ok, it was the original poster's which was not great.

i meant his question was not quantifiable in a sense that that it's irrelevant in the grander scheme of things, i wasn't using the word quantifiable to suggest that players and systems cannot be analysed! i do understand the word lol

Of course using this site works. It shows you on paper what should happen over the coming weeks. Its the element of luck thats the only thing working against it...sometimes things happen that are out of our control, its a bit like betting in that regards. If you were betting on a horse you wouldnt complain about the form guide if you lost. Sh*t happens!!

Wouldn't it be an interesting article though? I don't understand the negativity, if the watchlist is intended as a prediction of future returns wouldn't it be useful to see how well the watchlist features players did? Or is the end of season article on the captains poll also redundant?

Tis an interesting point. Think the negativity comes from the fact a lot of people don't use this site as a guide, they take it as fact and make choices based accordingly. Then when they don't work out pop up and complain about the advice/article/captains poll.

    Current team:

    Begovic (Krul)

    Coleman / Pantsil / Kolorov (A.Cole(1) / Kyrgiakos(2))

    Nasri / Nani / N'Zogbia / Van Der Vaart (Cleverley(3))

    Torres / Tevez / Rooney

Is this the right team to play?

    Is the bench order correct?

I was thinking of chopping one of A.Cole/Torres to free up funds for strengthening, the main transfer I'd like to make is Krul>Gordon, but I only have 0.3 in the bank.

Doing A.Cole > Rafael would allow me to makes the following changes:

    Krul > Gordon
    Cleverley > Adam
    Torres > Drogba

spread over the next four gameweeks. Does this look like an idea with merit?

Torres > Drogba I believe may be necessary, however that transfer gives me most concern because of Liverpool's excellent forthcoming fixtures, does anyone belive Drogba will again become season proof? Surely when Rooney starts scoring he'll get annoyed and have to do better than him? It almost seemed that way towards the end of last season.

I've made one transfer already this week, Bale > Van Der Vaart and won't be taking a hit. Happy with my squad this week. My only concern is the Blackpool vs Liverpool clash of the 'pools game, the Met Office weather site (most accurate weather site on the web, by the way http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_weather.html) does not forecast anything of concern yet the frozen pitch debacle remains an issue. Has anyone heard any news regarding the blackpool pitch? The major websites don't have anything conclusive. Do blackpool's groundsmen play fantasy football and are a member of this site? I wish!

I just wish Torres and Rooney were on good form! Gonna captain Rooney this week though as only 1 of my rivals has him. Just hoping Nani has a quiet one, he'll be 30% captain across the entire game IMO.

i have no beef, i'm just calling you out for being a dick, just read back the conversation to see why. if you make mocking comments and mama jokes for no reason then start innocently asking "what's the beef?" you're either a troll or an idiot.

i wasn't mocking you at first, i was just disagreeing that your suggestion would have no merit in the grander scheme of things, don't you realise that? It was interesting as some kind of stat which might make you think twice about being a sheep and following the masses, which is clearly the point your getting at.

But who seriously does that? just uses the captain poll for their captain every week and makes changes based solely on this site? how very boring!

My point is: FFS obviously see the value in reviewing how well the captains poll performed because they do an article on that, why wouldn't there be value in reviewing how well the watchlist performed? If you claim there is "no merit" in reviewing the watchlist suggestions is there also "no merit" in reviewing the captains poll? What would be the harm in doing an ariticle on it? You're the one with the problem here. I have never once suggested people make their choices cimply on the basis of this website, so stop banigng that drum as if I have.

also, now you've admitted you were mocking me a word of advice: if you keep talking about listening to placebo and wanking people are going to assume you're 14. seriously.

i was listening to a mix of placebo, pendulum, blink 182 and some other band i can't remember. so what, i like fast pased music when drinking, who doesn't? placebo ok wasn't my choice it was my friends'. could quite as easily banged of some marcus shultz or simon patterson but hey.

i often choose a captain which isn't top of the poll, usually get stung, choose the top choice another week and they underperform, luck hasn't been with me for weeks, but hey, that's life.

i've not been on about the captain's poll question posed by yourself, but that of the original poster. somewhere in the middle i got lost in who originally posed what, and for that i apoligise. i've already said this but your question was a good idea, if you look back up to the top my original comment is linked to mj6987's post, not yours, so i was never questioning the validity of what you were saying really, but him, but you posted on my comment as if i was talking to you which i was not. it's not all about you, lol

tell you what...going "LOL" doesn't help either if you want people to believe you're not 14.

i use 'lol' as merely a suggestion of my mood as words can easily portray a negative statement without the use of a variety of descriptive words which is time consuming. i'm not mad, i'm not upset, that's what i want to convey.

the mum comment was light hearted, mainly made because you wrote on my post when i wasn't questioning your comment, just because a comment comes after yours doesn't mean it's addressed to you, maybe you should click the correct reply box in future!

you're just being critical for critical's sake now, do you need to prove someting? are you a closet homo? hehehe 🙂

What about Kolorov?? IMO he has potential but isn't delivering.
Was thinking of another Eve defender but don't like doubling up.
