It’s a well-known fact that Sir Alex Ferguson is an advocate of the “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough” school of thinking when it comes to youth development. In Fergie’s eyes, there’s only so far a young player can be carried by alleged “great potential” before he needs to produce the goods. This season, the performances of Rafael da Silva suggest the Brazilian is no longer looked upon as just “a promising full-back” at Old Trafford and is, instead, starting to prove himself an integral member of the Man United first-team.

With John O’Shea, Gary Neville and Wes Brown for competition, Rafael has had a fight on his hands for the right-back slot, but impressive displays, both domestically and in Europe, suggests that the United boss has come to regard him as first-choice. Following a spate of injuries, Rafael has started the last three games for United (picking up an assist and three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points) and the team have scored ten times, conceding just once, as they climbed to the top of the table.

Ferguson was full of praise for the United defence, in particular, following the 1-0 defeat of Arsenal at Old Trafford, saying:

“We defended very well, the back four were fantastic tonight, absolutely magnificent. So with that foundation it always gives us a great chance. I think our form is improving. And, as I say, with the back four playing like that, if they play like that from now on and give us the consistency, then we’re in with a good chance.”

Such words of encouragement should certainly reassure any Fantasy Managers mulling over a move for the youngster. Rafael, subject of a recent Technical Area article, comes in at just £5.6m and has a mere 1.8% ownership, a ridiculously low figure considering United have conceded just four times in their last seven games.

With their next six gameweeks including the Double Gameweek 24 (SUN, bir, wba, STK, tot, BIR & blp), United have a fairly straightforward run over the busy Festive period and investment in their players will no doubt be high. There’s a chance Rafael may not be involved in every single game but with the games coming thick and fast, practically every team in the league will be heavily prone to rotation in lieu of the recent postponements. What’s becoming apparent, though, is that Rafael is proving himself to be a fundamental part of that back four and with Fergie’s seal of approval, is weighing up to be something of a Fantasy Bargain.

A repost sorry - anyone shed any light on this?

A question for all you knowledgable folk who watched the Everton-Man City game:

When Balotelli was put through 1-1 with Howard his shot hit the post and bounced back into play, Howard then swatted it away (a bit) and he subsequently saved from a follow up Tevez shot. The question is – why was it not a penalty when Howard came off his line and took Balotelli out without getting any ball? The ball stayed in play and Howards ‘tackle’ prevented Balotelli from tapping home.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want it to be a goal and I’m not even sure it should be, afterall none of the City players or fans even appealed so I’m guessing there’s a rule there somewhere that explains it?

    Thoughts?

I basically think you're right. The ref somehow changed his mind because it hit the post and people got onto the rebound.

Yeah, it's as if the keepers/defenders aren't penalised if they take out a player having a shot regardless of where the ball ends up.

Bang on 105, recently made 0.5 on VDV and bought him back 0.2 more expensive but made that 0.2 up plus more with Arshavin and Nasri.

A full programme of football matches is planned for Boxing Day, although some fixtures remain subject to inspections either on Thursday or Friday.

Blackpool v Liverpool is the main doubt in the Premier League, with Bloomfield Road lacking undersoil heating to tackle the recent freezing conditions.

I'm staying away from all Blackpool Liverpool players just to be on the safe side. You can't then cry when the game is subsequently called off as we know it's too much of a risk there.

Given most have lots of spare cash at the monment not sure about bringing in Rafael who may miss some games over Evra/Ferdinand who should play them all 5.6 is not a bargain if he ends up on the bench for an easy game or worse comes on for the last 10 What do you guys think?

That was a consideration, but the cash is useful to have once one of the big guns starts looking like hitting form (Rooney/Lampard/Cesc/Drogba/Malouda)

      Bale -> VdV this gameweek

Save money for Cahill -> Lampard (or Cahill to mid-tier midfielder and Elmander -> Rooney for double gameweek)

    Jaas (Gordon)
    Coleman Vidic Kolarov Samba (Konchesky)
    Nani(C) Nasri Bale (Ferguson, Brunt)
    Drogba Tevez Carroll
    *********** two frees***************

    1. maybe time to get rid of Jaas anyone know who rotates well with Gordon?
    2. Drogba out for Rooney ?
    3. Drogba out for really cheap forward and Lamps/Fabs in?

    any opinions?

I am thinking Konch out Da Silva in though it means I will be doubling up on UTD defence , risky but may work out. I dont trust VDV's fitness and feel Bale is due a brace but I hear you on that one, who would you recommend for ferguson/Brunt ? I only brought Brunt in last week for Jarvis and the game was called off, panicked!! Would be sick to seel him without even playing though Ferguson has got handy BPS when I needed them

Torres will twist his knee falling over his frozen pony tail risk not worth taking.

Happy with my squad this week. My only concern is the Blackpool vs Liverpool clash of the ‘pools game, the Met Office weather site (most accurate weather site on the web, by the way http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/we.....ther.html) does not forecast anything of concern yet the frozen pitch debacle remains an issue. Has anyone heard any news regarding the blackpool pitch? The major websites don’t have anything conclusive. Do blackpool’s groundsmen play fantasy football and are a member of this site? I wish!

    you given up now, stilicho?

    Foster / Al-Habsi
    Vidic / Baines / Onuoha / Kyrgiakos / Foley
Nani / Nasri / Arshavin / Van der Vaart / Brunt
    Tevez / Carroll / Elmander
