The Watchlist has had a full refresh just in time for the New Year’s Day programme. You can find these mid-term player recommendation rankings in the usual place – on your frontpage at the foot of your right sidebar.

United’s growing form and confidence has their Fantasy assets on the climb as they share top rankings with neighbours City, their key players – Joe Hart and Carlos Tevez – hold on at the summit of their respective positions as the Manchester clubs dominate…

Hart’s dominance in the Goalkeeper rankings is threatened by a surge from Sunderland’s Craig Gordon; only concerns of injuries in the Black Cats’ rearguard prevents the Scot from topping the table as his form, fixtures and value has him climb to second. Wigan’s Al Habsi – another budget prospect is our highest new entry with strong short-term fixtures and decent form. The likes of Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Blackpool’s Richard Kingson have their double Gameweeks to thank for their positions – expect further climbs from them as those fixtures become a stronger short-term factor.

City’s Aleksandar Kolarov gets toppled in the Defender rankings thanks to the fierce competition for starts in Roberto Mancini’s back four. United’s Rafael – a seemingly more secure prospect – takes his place with strong form and fixtures and of course exceptional Fantasy Premier League value.

There are an array of climbers below him, with Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley taking up his highest position of the season and Chelsea’s Ashley Cole benefiting from the recent win and clean sheet that suggests that Carlo Ancelotti’s side could make the most of kind fixtures to come.

The Blackpool pairing of Stephen Crainey and Ian Evatt are high new entries with their double fixtures now a factor – they are just so hard to separate in the budget bracket but we’re favouring the left-back – just. More on him and Blackpool’s other assets to come.

The Midfield rankings see little movement at the top with Nani expected to return from a hip injury to justify his placing. Tottenham’s Rafael Van der Vaart could be rested but his huge potential when he plays has him hold firm in second.

The big movers include Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas who, unlike Samir Nasri and Andrei Arshavin, offers security in the Arsenal midfield – at a price of course. He leads the charge of the midfield heavyweights with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard ranked further down in our thinking – despite Gerrard’s double Gameweeks. The Liverpool skipper will need to show form before he can threaten our top five.

Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is our highest new entry into our top five with his strong fixtures to come. It’s not clear just how many games Ian Holloway will get out of the Scot, but it is likely that Adam will come out of Blackpool’s hectic schedule with returns that will cement his status as a strong value FPL midfield option.

The likes of Florent Malouda and Kevin Nolan enjoy climbs with strong short-term fixtures, while the same can be said of Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson who has shown outstanding form of late, without blinking on the Fantasy radar. Wigan’s Ben Watson is another name to consider in the value bracket – his penalty against Arsenal indicated that he’ll have a role to play from set-pieces while Charles N’Zogbia serves his three-match ban.

Up front, Carlos Tevez maintains top spot despite his recent rest against Villa. United’s Dimitar Berbatov is a strong challenger and Tevez will need to play and return over the next two to maintain his position over the Bulgarian. Newcastle’s Andy Carroll, with decent short-term fixtures, climbs back into our top three as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to struggle for form. That might change once we know more on the thigh injury that is threatening to rule Carroll out of the trip to Wigan.

Once again Blackpool’s budget assets make an impression here, with Luke Varney and DJ Campbell entering our thoughts as Holloway’s side prepare for 10 fixtures in 7 Gameweeks.

Expect further tweaks to the Watchlist, with those double Gameweeks playing more of an influence, once we have the New Year’s Day fixtures out of the way.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So Rafael is an assured starter?

If I swap Vidic for him, that lets me get in Berbatov for Elmander. Still though... really? This isn't one of those pie in the sky, "maybe" and "might keep his place" characters is it?

really, he wont start every game at all, he's been lucky rooney was out for so long too. my opinion anyway, he's hot and cold when he does play anyway, he's never been consistant.

The extra cost gets you a better offensive threat, and slightly better sercurity, + the benifit of getting bonus for a good defensive performance

but rafael is cheap, chirpy, reliable enough and gets forward more for non set pieces

think berb + rooney is a safe combo for the moment, rooney pushed wide or deep sometimes

Could happen, worth keeping an eye on.

Double gameweeks are already annoying me. 1) Because the United v Blackpool game really screwed me over having 4 players in that game, 1 suspended and 1 injured originally. 2) I want to get rid of Torres, but with a double GW I'm doubting it. Then again he and Liverpool were extremely poor against Wolves and haven't been good all season, plus Torres and away games don't generally go well together.

In other news, is N'Zogbia banned for the next 3 matches? I assume so after a head butt.

I've always told myself that dressing up your avatar is a waste of time and money, but that lightsabre is the only thing I ever wanted for my avatar. And it's because when you light it up, you do a bunch of moves and a backflip, unlike the other lightsabres, which you just look at a bit.

Sometimes it does. Last year when most of the Chelsea defence were missing, everyone jumped on the Zirkov bandwagon, despite me pointing out that there was no longer any defence to invest in. Needless to say, they didn't keep many clean sheets for a while.

    My current team is;

    Foster // Robinson

    Kolarov // Coleman // Salcido/ / Konchesky // Bardsley

    Lampard // Bale // Nani // Nasri // N'Zogbia

    Rooney // Bent // Carroll

I have 2 free transfers and 0.3m in the bank.

I'm losing patience with Lampard and Rooney, is it a good move to transfer them to Tevez and Fabregas?

Alternatively I'm just going to N'Zogbia. Who is the best 5.8 midfielder for 1 week only? I'll change to Adam after this week. I was thinking of sticking with Wigan and going for Watson - on penalties and will likely get bonus points if Wigan win.

Any thoughts on this, or my team in general would be appreciated.

I won december manager of the month in a league with some of my friends by 1 point. I was considering doin 2 or 3 transfers this week. Does anyone know if the points deduction(4/8 points) will affect my december total when it doesnt affect my january total?

    Any help appreciated

Please help me. I haven't had time to do any transfers over Christmas and i've lost ground. Need to get myself back in the running.

    Robinson (Foster)
    Kolarov, Vidic, Cole, Ridgewell (Samba)
    Pederson, Brunt, Nasri, Bale (Nani)
    Bent, Carrol (Piquionne)

I've got 5.1 in the bank and 2 free transfers.

not sure where to start, lots of average performers, no superstars - start by working in VDV for sure?

I think i'm gonna keep Bale over vDV. Thing is, this team instead i had Cahill in place of Nasri got me like 80 points a few gameweeks ago. Shows how a team can go from good to crap if you don't bother messing with it.

Actually, Nani-Carroll-Bale-Vidic are superstars in fantasy terms.

Piquionne, Bent, Nasri, A Cole are outdated pick, try to kick them off though I might suggest keep Cole for another 2-3 weeks.

Like the Nasri to Fabregas. Samba for Dawson seems good but my strikeforce looks VERY weak.

You get a good alternative in Hutton for Dawson.

Ya but it has in the rules transfer made before a month ie. now for january wont effect the january total in mini, so im just afraid the deduction will come off previous month in this instance.

With Carroll facing a spell on the sidelines, would any Carroll owners ship him out if he's missing a few games?

He's worth 6.5, I got him for 5.3 and can sell for 5.9, so would have to hope plenty of others drop him too so I don't lose much getting him back in. But if he is out - would be the perfect time to bring Varney in for him.

I'd sell him if he died, but if it's a couple of games, he's just too consistent, and I'd lose too much getting him back in.

i would wait for more firm news on the injury.

Logic says as soon as the red flag hits he will lose 0.1/0.2m within the first week or so.

If its longer you might be lucky enough to not lose much at all.

For me, selling Carrol to jump on the elmander bandwagon was one of my worst moves of the season (giving up 0.5m i think at the time)

if its short term, i would i'd the storm and keep him.

Anyone think that this is a good idea

Nani > Malouda or Gerrard (aspecially if he maybe upfront this week and the double next week)

I wanna keep nani but cant face another GW of him not playing and i can get him in later in the month with my WC

The long haired lover from Newcastle is out according to the Telegraph.

Heskey plays for Villa, no CS for Chelsea then.

Hodgson to make plenty of changes.. mmmhhhh.. (well maybe one)

Chelsea bring in Ferriera for the suspended Ivan thier only change
