The Watchlist has had a full refresh just in time for the New Yearโ€™s Day programme. You can find these mid-term player recommendation rankings in the usual place โ€“ on your frontpage at the foot of your right sidebar.

Unitedโ€™s growing form and confidence has their Fantasy assets on the climb as they share top rankings with neighbours City, their key players โ€“ Joe Hart and Carlos Tevez – hold on at the summit of their respective positions as the Manchester clubs dominate…

Hartโ€™s dominance in the Goalkeeper rankings is threatened by a surge from Sunderlandโ€™s Craig Gordon; only concerns of injuries in the Black Catsโ€™ rearguard prevents the Scot from topping the table as his form, fixtures and value has him climb to second. Wiganโ€™s Al Habsi โ€“ another budget prospect is our highest new entry with strong short-term fixtures and decent form. The likes of Liverpoolโ€™s Pepe Reina and Blackpoolโ€™s Richard Kingson have their double Gameweeks to thank for their positions โ€“ expect further climbs from them as those fixtures become a stronger short-term factor.

Cityโ€™s Aleksandar Kolarov gets toppled in the Defender rankings thanks to the fierce competition for starts in Roberto Manciniโ€™s back four. Unitedโ€™s Rafael โ€“ a seemingly more secure prospect – takes his place with strong form and fixtures and of course exceptional Fantasy Premier League value.

There are an array of climbers below him, with Sunderlandโ€™s Phil Bardsley taking up his highest position of the season and Chelseaโ€™s Ashley Cole benefiting from the recent win and clean sheet that suggests that Carlo Ancelottiโ€™s side could make the most of kind fixtures to come.

The Blackpool pairing of Stephen Crainey and Ian Evatt are high new entries with their double fixtures now a factor โ€“ they are just so hard to separate in the budget bracket but weโ€™re favouring the left-back โ€“ just. More on him and Blackpoolโ€™s other assets to come.

The Midfield rankings see little movement at the top with Nani expected to return from a hip injury to justify his placing. Tottenhamโ€™s Rafael Van der Vaart could be rested but his huge potential when he plays has him hold firm in second.

The big movers include Arsenalโ€™s Cesc Fabregas who, unlike Samir Nasri and Andrei Arshavin, offers security in the Arsenal midfield โ€“ at a price of course. He leads the charge of the midfield heavyweights with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard ranked further down in our thinking โ€“ despite Gerrardโ€™s double Gameweeks. The Liverpool skipper will need to show form before he can threaten our top five.

Blackpoolโ€™s Charlie Adam is our highest new entry into our top five with his strong fixtures to come. Itโ€™s not clear just how many games Ian Holloway will get out of the Scot, but it is likely that Adam will come out of Blackpoolโ€™s hectic schedule with returns that will cement his status as a strong value FPL midfield option.

The likes of Florent Malouda and Kevin Nolan enjoy climbs with strong short-term fixtures, while the same can be said of Sunderlandโ€™s Jordan Henderson who has shown outstanding form of late, without blinking on the Fantasy radar. Wiganโ€™s Ben Watson is another name to consider in the value bracket โ€“ his penalty against Arsenal indicated that heโ€™ll have a role to play from set-pieces while Charles Nโ€™Zogbia serves his three-match ban.

Up front, Carlos Tevez maintains top spot despite his recent rest against Villa. Unitedโ€™s Dimitar Berbatov is a strong challenger and Tevez will need to play and return over the next two to maintain his position over the Bulgarian. Newcastleโ€™s Andy Carroll, with decent short-term fixtures, climbs back into our top three as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to struggle for form. That might change once we know more on the thigh injury that is threatening to rule Carroll out of the trip to Wigan.

Once again Blackpoolโ€™s budget assets make an impression here, with Luke Varney and DJ Campbell entering our thoughts as Hollowayโ€™s side prepare for 10 fixtures in 7 Gameweeks.

Expect further tweaks to the Watchlist, with those double Gameweeks playing more of an influence, once we have the New Yearโ€™s Day fixtures out of the way.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Rafa has been, won us trophies and left. I blame Hicks & Gillett and currently everyone involved. Rafa left us in 7th, before that we lost 2 games all season, before that 4. Any other times that would have won us the Prem. Rebuilding is needed and Roy has got us off to an awful start. He deserves the 38 games as the season is over anyway.

At least 50% to blame, in fact 80%. Some players need to buck their ideas up, others Roy needs to play correctly in a formation that works.

Hodgson is hugely (although not completely) to blame for the current state at Liverpool. He inherited a poor, but not a 12th place, 3 points above relegation squad. But his tactics are shocking. Take Wolves for example. Maxi (one of our in form players) dropped, Kuyt moved to left, Mereiles to right. Gerrard not played behind Torres. Long Balls at every possible moment. Late changes.

I could go on about Hodgson. I agree that there are numerous other factors but Liverpool need to start rebuilding by getting rid of him.

    Looking for some clever ideas.
    Robinson, Krul
Vidic, Terry, K. Toure, Salcido, Crainey
Nani, Van der Vaart, Yaya Toure, N'Zogbia, Barton
    Tevez, Torres, Carroll

    Problems:
could be rested --> K Toure, Y Toure, Nani, VdV, Tevez
    could be injured --> Carroll
could lose its starting position --> Salcido
    is supended 2 GW --> N'Zogbia
is expensive and horrible --> Torres

With so many players that could be rested and 2 transfers available, I am thinking of:
    - keeping Torres, at least he is healthy and has a double gameweek
    - N'Zogbia out, Adam in
    - then 3 options:
A: Salcido out --> Kolarov / Rafael / or any other in at 6.5 M£ or less?
B: Yaya Toure out --> Brunt / Nolan / Parker / Cleverley in or any other at 7.0 M£ or less?
C: keep a transfer so I have 2 next week?

So, A, B, C or something completely different?

Looks like my bench could potentially be Krul, Tevez, Carroll & Nani. Which means I will probably have to take a pt hit (after already doing N’Zogbia->Adam) this GW to get a full team on the park. Which would mean reversing the Coleman:arrow:Salcido trade I stupidly did 2 weeks ago.

    Current team:

    Foster/Al Habsi
    Vidic/Baines/Kyrgiakos/Onuoha/Foley
    Nani/Nasri/Van der Vaart/Dempsey/Brunt
    Berbatov/Tevez/Carroll

Given Onuoha is injured, Kyrg & Foley don't exactly play for reliable teams, and I'm not sure about the injury status of Nani & Tevez, I could really do with transferring in another defender.

is anyone thinking that with everybody seemingly being rested or rotated our old friends drogba and malouda have not had a rest yet over xmas ,now for me along with all the other concerns that could really put the top hat on it.

Does my head in all these stars being rested. Why should VDV be rested, because he is just 'recovered' from injury......yes, the key word is 'recovered' which means he's not injured anymore!!! 100k a week.....should be playing all the time!! most rugby players take a battering week in week out and rarly get rested and are lucky to get 100K a year.

Footballers are pussies compared to tennis players. The majority of footballers play 1 game a week, sometimes 2, for around 90 minutes, while tennis players play up to 5 matches per week, varyign from an hour - 3 Hours+ and more in Grand Slams.

All I'd say to footballers is man up.

yeah maybe the wingers but guys in the scrum etc take huge hits! i'd love to see a footballer being tackled by a rugby player! they would think twice about diving then

Who said he'll be rested? He came off early against the toon & i fully expect him to start at home to Fulham,. Sure he might not play more than 70mins (he's still not fully match fit) but he's still scored plenty of points previously without playing the full 90 ....

um about 20 people on here. Still not match fit??? he only missed a few games???? and first match back he scored 2 goals, nothing wrong with his fitness. he is just treated like a peice of glass

& where are those 2o ppl getting there info from? Directly from Harry & Joe? He hasn't been 100% match fit since we signed him. Sure he scored 2 goals first match back but that doesn't mean he's capable of putting in a full 90 mins. The pace of the Premier League takes some getting used to & Harry is being sensible with his use of him (in my opinion). He's not there to score points for us he's there to help Spurs win matches ...

Agreed - I have often thought how great fantasy football would have been in the 70s when your players played every game unless they were badly injured or dropped. You could have relied on skill and judgement to use transfers to bring in players hitting form with good fixtures ahead. Also far fewer games were postponed even though most clubs didn't have undersoil heating. The game is becoming more and more of a lottery, sadly....

Thinking of doing Cahill out for Malouda and Berba or Rooney for Tevez?

Also should i keep Ivanovic (sus)? or swap him for someone else?
Btw the reason for taking cahill out is because he is heading out for the asian cup soon...bloody aussies.

        My Team:
        Robinson/Foster
        Kolarov/Konchesky/Vidic/Baines/Salcido
        Nasri/MGP/Yaya/VDV/Nani
        Berbatov/Tevez/Carroll

Im worried that Carroll is not playing because several other players might be rested. Should I get Carroll out for Varney/DJ/Rodallega or somebody else? This is to prevent rotation nightmare, Carroll is also likely to miss the West Ham game which means he is out untill the WC.

No free transfers, 0.8 in bank, any advice?
