The Watchlist has had a full refresh just in time for the New Year’s Day programme. You can find these mid-term player recommendation rankings in the usual place – on your frontpage at the foot of your right sidebar.

United’s growing form and confidence has their Fantasy assets on the climb as they share top rankings with neighbours City, their key players – Joe Hart and Carlos Tevez – hold on at the summit of their respective positions as the Manchester clubs dominate…

Hart’s dominance in the Goalkeeper rankings is threatened by a surge from Sunderland’s Craig Gordon; only concerns of injuries in the Black Cats’ rearguard prevents the Scot from topping the table as his form, fixtures and value has him climb to second. Wigan’s Al Habsi – another budget prospect is our highest new entry with strong short-term fixtures and decent form. The likes of Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Blackpool’s Richard Kingson have their double Gameweeks to thank for their positions – expect further climbs from them as those fixtures become a stronger short-term factor.

City’s Aleksandar Kolarov gets toppled in the Defender rankings thanks to the fierce competition for starts in Roberto Mancini’s back four. United’s Rafael – a seemingly more secure prospect – takes his place with strong form and fixtures and of course exceptional Fantasy Premier League value.

There are an array of climbers below him, with Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley taking up his highest position of the season and Chelsea’s Ashley Cole benefiting from the recent win and clean sheet that suggests that Carlo Ancelotti’s side could make the most of kind fixtures to come.

The Blackpool pairing of Stephen Crainey and Ian Evatt are high new entries with their double fixtures now a factor – they are just so hard to separate in the budget bracket but we’re favouring the left-back – just. More on him and Blackpool’s other assets to come.

The Midfield rankings see little movement at the top with Nani expected to return from a hip injury to justify his placing. Tottenham’s Rafael Van der Vaart could be rested but his huge potential when he plays has him hold firm in second.

The big movers include Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas who, unlike Samir Nasri and Andrei Arshavin, offers security in the Arsenal midfield – at a price of course. He leads the charge of the midfield heavyweights with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard ranked further down in our thinking – despite Gerrard’s double Gameweeks. The Liverpool skipper will need to show form before he can threaten our top five.

Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is our highest new entry into our top five with his strong fixtures to come. It’s not clear just how many games Ian Holloway will get out of the Scot, but it is likely that Adam will come out of Blackpool’s hectic schedule with returns that will cement his status as a strong value FPL midfield option.

The likes of Florent Malouda and Kevin Nolan enjoy climbs with strong short-term fixtures, while the same can be said of Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson who has shown outstanding form of late, without blinking on the Fantasy radar. Wigan’s Ben Watson is another name to consider in the value bracket – his penalty against Arsenal indicated that he’ll have a role to play from set-pieces while Charles N’Zogbia serves his three-match ban.

Up front, Carlos Tevez maintains top spot despite his recent rest against Villa. United’s Dimitar Berbatov is a strong challenger and Tevez will need to play and return over the next two to maintain his position over the Bulgarian. Newcastle’s Andy Carroll, with decent short-term fixtures, climbs back into our top three as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to struggle for form. That might change once we know more on the thigh injury that is threatening to rule Carroll out of the trip to Wigan.

Once again Blackpool’s budget assets make an impression here, with Luke Varney and DJ Campbell entering our thoughts as Holloway’s side prepare for 10 fixtures in 7 Gameweeks.

Expect further tweaks to the Watchlist, with those double Gameweeks playing more of an influence, once we have the New Year’s Day fixtures out of the way.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My two cents, based on the few quotes I've read and my gut feeling lol:

Tevez: I expect him to start. He was rested last week, and he was fit enough to make them bench. I don't think they'll drop Mario after his hat trick, but I don't think they'll drop the club captain who cried his way out of Old Trafford citing time on the bench as a reason for the second game in a row. I'd say he's pretty likely to start.

Nani: Unlikely. Fergie generally errs on the side of caution with these things and the quotes from him this morning - "We're looking at Nani as a possibility. We'll see how he is today, but he maybe has more chance of playing against Stoke." - just seem to kind of reinforce that, to me. I'd say he's 50-50, if he trains today and feels fine he might be played, and we do have the fact that United have no wingers (Valencia still injured, Park left now, Clev still on loan) on our side, but if he's not fully fit he may be back for stoke. 50-50

VdV: I think he was taken off early in the last game for a reason. He didn't seem to be holding his hamstring or anything of the sort, didn't look to be struggling. They're at the lane, he got a little rest, I expect him to start. Harry knows how important he is to him, and if he hasn't had a recurrence of the injury, I imagine he'll be in the 11.

Konch: TBH I don't really know, but gut instinct would say Roy will stick with him. He's his fulham signing, he seems to like him, and as bad as he was, the rest of the 11 weren't much better.

Kolarov: I imagine that was just basic rotation. He's been good for them, and everything points to him being their first choice LB. I'm not sure who it was who filled in for him, but they played a few days ago, Kolarov is rested, fit, and presumably first choice = makes perfect sense that he'll come in and start.

I reckon Konch could get away with it, because, as you say, they were all poor, but then they'd all not played for a long time.

That third striker spot is killing me. Had Caroll from GW3 I think (yeah after the hat trick :P) and he was really consistent. Yet I still went for Elmander 4 weeks ago, he's scored 1 goal since I've had him. Last week I get Caroll back in, instead of berbatov. berbs scores and Caroll doesnt! Now he's injured.

Also have N'Zog Tevez and nani.

Not really sure what to do.

            SAF..

"We're looking at Nani as a possibility," the boss told reporters at Carrington on Friday. "We'll see how he is today, but he maybe has more chance of playing against Stoke."

An even worse scenario is that Man U are cruising and he gets a run out for the last 15 mins.
Not my captain for this week, then.

Sir Alex Ferguson may resist the temptation to draft Nani straight back into his Manchester United starting line-up at West Brom.

The Portugal winge has missed the Christmas programme so far due to a minor hip complaint and although he is now training, Ferguson is thinking about keeping him out until the clash with Stoke next Tuesday.

phew.. I think I have dodged most of the bans/injuries so should be able to field 11. I reckon Nani and VdV and Kolarov will all start. Not sure about Carroll but will keep him in there anyway.. if he doesnt start he wont be on the bench imo! Wont make any changes this week.. two will be handy for the dgw!

All.... would anyone suggest selling Carroll now?

Personally, given i have made 0.9 on him... i am loathed to do it just yet unless he has an injury ruling him out for at least 3 gameweeks.

Wait for news on the injury. I'm not selling unless he's out for more than 3 GW after this one.

I did, but my PS3 died a month or so before Christmas, YLOD 🙁

I replaced it for chrimbo, but haven't gotten around to getting all my old data off it. So unfortunately my virtual pro is stuck in dead cyberspace until I can get my old PS3 booted up and the data back off it!

I've never actually played with him online though... you can do virtual clubs and that, yeah?

@Greg, ah that's shit, a place in the FFSFC would've been awesome! If I manage to get the old PS3 back and running I'll post here for sure.

My PSN is Nailer6245 - up for a regular game?

Roversnick: are you registered for the Playstation Network (PSN)? On the right hand side of the PS3 home menu there should be an option to register online - it's very simple, and all explained step by step on the PS3. You essentially just need an email address, IIRC (it was four years ago when I registered!). You just create a PSN username for yourself (mine is Nailer6245) and then use that to go online for all of your games, fifa included.

Once you register, you can go into fifa, go into online modes, and get your fifa online set up in there. It's pretty straightforward, and good craic playing online, apart from all the b*stards who quit after 40 mins cos they're losing! 😀

        My current team:

        Foster/Al Habsi
        Vidic/Baines/Kyrgiakos/Onuoha/Foley
        Nani/Nasri/Van der Vaart/Dempsey/Brunt
        Berbatov/Tevez/Carroll

Given Onuoha is injured, Kyrg & Foley don’t exactly play for reliable teams, and I’m not sure about the injury status of Nani & Tevez, I could really do with transferring in another defender.

I have 1 free transfer and 1.6 in the bank. Who should I go for? I’ve had my eye on Kolarov, Bardsley, Coleman..

Ok, now thinking of a 4 point hit.

        Dunn -> Cleverley

        And

Carroll -> Tevez/Rooney (Leaves me with 0 in the bank if I choose Rooney).
