The Watchlist has had a full refresh just in time for the New Year’s Day programme. You can find these mid-term player recommendation rankings in the usual place – on your frontpage at the foot of your right sidebar.

United’s growing form and confidence has their Fantasy assets on the climb as they share top rankings with neighbours City, their key players – Joe Hart and Carlos Tevez – hold on at the summit of their respective positions as the Manchester clubs dominate…

Hart’s dominance in the Goalkeeper rankings is threatened by a surge from Sunderland’s Craig Gordon; only concerns of injuries in the Black Cats’ rearguard prevents the Scot from topping the table as his form, fixtures and value has him climb to second. Wigan’s Al Habsi – another budget prospect is our highest new entry with strong short-term fixtures and decent form. The likes of Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Blackpool’s Richard Kingson have their double Gameweeks to thank for their positions – expect further climbs from them as those fixtures become a stronger short-term factor.

City’s Aleksandar Kolarov gets toppled in the Defender rankings thanks to the fierce competition for starts in Roberto Mancini’s back four. United’s Rafael – a seemingly more secure prospect – takes his place with strong form and fixtures and of course exceptional Fantasy Premier League value.

There are an array of climbers below him, with Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley taking up his highest position of the season and Chelsea’s Ashley Cole benefiting from the recent win and clean sheet that suggests that Carlo Ancelotti’s side could make the most of kind fixtures to come.

The Blackpool pairing of Stephen Crainey and Ian Evatt are high new entries with their double fixtures now a factor – they are just so hard to separate in the budget bracket but we’re favouring the left-back – just. More on him and Blackpool’s other assets to come.

The Midfield rankings see little movement at the top with Nani expected to return from a hip injury to justify his placing. Tottenham’s Rafael Van der Vaart could be rested but his huge potential when he plays has him hold firm in second.

The big movers include Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas who, unlike Samir Nasri and Andrei Arshavin, offers security in the Arsenal midfield – at a price of course. He leads the charge of the midfield heavyweights with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard ranked further down in our thinking – despite Gerrard’s double Gameweeks. The Liverpool skipper will need to show form before he can threaten our top five.

Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is our highest new entry into our top five with his strong fixtures to come. It’s not clear just how many games Ian Holloway will get out of the Scot, but it is likely that Adam will come out of Blackpool’s hectic schedule with returns that will cement his status as a strong value FPL midfield option.

The likes of Florent Malouda and Kevin Nolan enjoy climbs with strong short-term fixtures, while the same can be said of Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson who has shown outstanding form of late, without blinking on the Fantasy radar. Wigan’s Ben Watson is another name to consider in the value bracket – his penalty against Arsenal indicated that he’ll have a role to play from set-pieces while Charles N’Zogbia serves his three-match ban.

Up front, Carlos Tevez maintains top spot despite his recent rest against Villa. United’s Dimitar Berbatov is a strong challenger and Tevez will need to play and return over the next two to maintain his position over the Bulgarian. Newcastle’s Andy Carroll, with decent short-term fixtures, climbs back into our top three as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to struggle for form. That might change once we know more on the thigh injury that is threatening to rule Carroll out of the trip to Wigan.

Once again Blackpool’s budget assets make an impression here, with Luke Varney and DJ Campbell entering our thoughts as Holloway’s side prepare for 10 fixtures in 7 Gameweeks.

Expect further tweaks to the Watchlist, with those double Gameweeks playing more of an influence, once we have the New Year’s Day fixtures out of the way.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Clev could be back to utd though accord to saf. I posted this earlier but it got moderated for some reason. SAF is having a meeting with Martinez because Utd are "light in wide areas" and Valencia isn't back till the end of Feb, Park end of Jan.

After an appalling week I need at least 11 to play this week. Fergie's comments say to me that Rafael, Evra, Berbs and possibly one of Ferdinand or Vidic are all on rotation risk watch. I'm starting to really hate the festive fixture list.

Still reeling from getting 22 last week after seeing Nani, Kolorov, Nasri, Tevez, Enrique all rotated, benched or injured.

At Villa Luke was always inconsistent, I remember him scoring two away at Chelsea and a hatrick away at Boro within like 2 weeks, but then you wouldn't hear of him for months.

With us though he was very consistent, just utter wank! 😀

N'Zog to Adams or Parker? But Bosingwa with the current rotations and injuries at chelsea maybe the better option for points. Adams is unlikely to pick up major points at Man City other than maybe his usual bonus points if Blackpool do score. Parker is a differential option.

If Scharner is out, alongside Tamas & Olsson we have no choice but to either put Reid centre back or play Meite.

I know what I'd rather do, Reid came on and played well against Blackpool away there. That would be the defence I'd play tomorrow if Scharner is out anyway.

i was thinking reina/cech for a keeper and getting foster for 23 or so, i miss benifer and like the brum defence

but gordon is the most apealing of the cheapies i think, reina the most of the expensive ones, but already have konch, but his days are numbered!

could get reina for robinson and bosingwa for konch... but boring transfers and ive zog to sort out, even thinking of getting malouda for zogbia, ltos of cash to spare since im saving it for my nasri > fabs movement, my teams in my link for ideas, just stumped on whats best this week :S

Zog to Adams is the current flavour of the week although if you can hold off maybe better bringing in Adams for his double game week next week or Parker for a differential. West Ham vs Wolves could be a high scoring game with both teams needing points. The goalkeeping options are obviously Hart or Gordon for a cheap switch. Cechs next 5 games are also quite good same with Gomes (although Spurs are interesting to say the least defensively).

    Rooney Rodallega Bent

So your still saying Rooney is better than these guys?

Villa, Drogba, Iniesta, Ronaldo, Messi, Eto, Torres, Robben, Sneidjer, Tevez etc.

Ah yes Rooney World class but wouldnt be in the top 10 in his POSITION in the world.

              Makes senses.

Jamsiep was right, It is pointless trying to bring figures, stats, actually performances over a number of years against major oppositions in major tournaments into a debate. You know things that matter rather than a biased view.

SD I still would take Beckham back. Just for the fact he was a Utd legend and it would be nice to see him in a red shirt again!

Yes he's been playing in a second rate league for a year or two, but a few weeks back practising with Utd would get him upto speed. He never had any pace, his game was based on his passing and crossing ability, and obviously the set pieces. I'd happily give him 45mins a game again, just look what Scholes and Giggs can provide on their day still. Unfortunately SAF isn't having any of it, so this is a moot point.

Oh and DB, you thought Utd should buy Steven Ireland = you're a joke, trying to dig up quotes by me to make yourself look bright. lolz.

A current Stephen Ireland > Beckham
who was described as "top 5% in talent at City and bottome 5% mental toughness"

If he gets his head right he will be decent again.

What you mean digging up quotes? is that your way of trying to say we shouldnt take what you say as serious.

There is a reason Fergie sold him years ago and kept Scholes and Giggs.

This "bring back Beckham" is utter tripe. Might aswell Get Bobby Charlton back. To quote his former team mate Best on Bekcham for Lols

"He (Beckham) cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's alright."

Worried I wont get three out with Coleman & Rafael at risk of rotation, Huth being suspended and Williamson probably not starting. Looking to transfer Williamson out (1.7 in Bank):

My Teams Currently looking like this
    Hart Al Habsi
    Cole Coleman Jara Dann Elmo
    Nasri Nani VDV N'Zog Silva
    Tevez Bent Odem

Have 1.2 in the bank. Was thinking Jara -> Konchesky or Getting out N'Zogbia. Not sure who to get in for 6.7 though! Not really sure about my transfers this week. Any other ideas? :/

The consensus is NZog -> Adam as preparation of DGWs, if you're fairly confident you don't need to play him in your starting XI this GW. He might be handy as a sub if the rotation nightmare continues...

Anyone knows if Piquionne will start? It says he is doubtful in the team news.
I'm wondering if I should make a 4 point hit to transfer in Ameobi for Piquionne, just to make sure I have enough players that will start.

    My team:

    Gordon (Krul)
    Bos Kol Rafael (Boa, Coleman)
    Vdv Nasri Fabs Arsh Nani
    Berb Carroll (Piq)

    Carroll is injured
    Nani is doubtful
Boateng might loose his place to Zabaleta
Arshavin might loose his place to Walcott
    VdV might be rested
    Berbatov might be rested.
