Arsenal’s emphatic 3-1 victory over Chelsea back in Gameweek 19 seems to have provided a psychological shot in the arm to a team searching for their first piece of silverware in five years. After stylishly sweeping aside the reigning Premier League Champions, the Gunners have since bossed matches against Birmingham (a 3-0 victory) and Man City (a game they deserved to win). They are now within 4 points of leaders Manchester United and seem to be the biggest rivals to Sir Alex’s men, given Chelsea’s torrid form and City’s inconsistency. The triumphant display against Chelsea also saw the return key players Cesc Fabregas and, namely, Robin Van Persie – who made his first start of the season.

This new found buoyancy and restoration of proven talent will give Arsene Wenger’s men a significant boost into the second half of the season and the foundations to tackle what, on paper, appears to be a kind run of fixtures (whm, WIG, EVE, new, WOL/STK, che) which includes an immensely attractive double Gameweek spent at the Emirates.

The return of highly influential Van Persie is a timely and one would expect him to be in amongst the goals and assists, in a run that could make or break Arsenal’s title hopes. Of course, Marouane Chamakh remains a factor having enjoyed an encouraging start to his career at the Emirates, and there is a possibility that one of the two strikers will be benched, with Wenger currently favouring a five-man midfield. But with the Frenchman opting for Van Persie in the crucial clashes with Chelsea and Manchester City, this seems a clear signal of his intent.

RVP hasn’t had the chance to prove his worth this season having only managed to scrape together a handful of Premier League appearances, but if previous seasons are anything to go by then the Dutch international will soon enough show his ability. The player is as much as a provider as he is a goalscorer, in the 2008/2009 season (one in which he managed to stay relatively injury free) he clocked up 11 goals and 10 assists, and his all round authority was not unnoticed as he collected 27 bonus points on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

A key component in Arsenal’s attacking ploys and a factor at set-plays, now could be the right time to transfer in Van Persie. With a current FPL ownership of just 3.5%, he could be a key “differential” and once he has hit some form, his value of £9.5 million will surely increase as swarms of Fantasy Managers take interest.

The caveat is of course the Dutchman’s history of injuries. Van Persie has suffered badly in previous seasons from a catalogue of setbacks – ankle, thigh, foot, hamstring and knee – Van Persie has suffered problems with them all. The 2008/09 season saw him start 24 league games – he’s never got close to bettering that total in this, his seventh year in the Premier League.

Although his valuation is high for a player who has a rickety injury record, many Fantasy Managers will have funds available in the bank as Carlos Tevez seems to be one of the only high-priced forwards displaying a degree of consistency. If you do opt for Van Persie though prepare to wince at every incoming tackle and make sure you’re stocking some bubble wrap for those glass legs.

Birmingham are strong defensively. They'll grab another player or two in January. Combo of Bentley's crossing and Zigic's head will also do the trick.

A general rule of thumb is fans are never good judges of players.

Zigic has an excellent record in Spain and Internationally.

It could just be he isnt suited to the negative old age tactics of Birm.

He is the type of player who could catch fire elsewhere.

Perhaps something of a controversial bunch. Camzy's suggestion is most definitely worth scratching ones chin over no?

    Fabianski, Begovic
    Rafael, Skrtel, Bramble, Evatt, Jara
Nani, Van Der Vaart, Gerrard, N’Zogbia, Adam
    Tevez, Berbatov, Torres

In the run up to Arsenal's DGW 27 Gerrard & Torres out for Fabregas & RVP.

    Thoughts chaps?

I've since changed my mind on a few things.

My current WC team plan is:

      Fabianski, Begovic

Rafael, Skrtel, Coleman, S. Taylor , Eardley

Fabregas, Nani, Van Der Vaart, Gerrard, Adam

      Tevez, Berbatov, Rodallega/Odemwingie

I'm now accounting for the one bench player in the front 8 of each of the given gameweeks, defense is also much more rotatable and less dependent on double gameweeks.

I have a transfer plan in place that allows me to double on Arsenal in GW 27 and get Chelsea in GW 28 without hits too.

Yes actually. My team is flexible enough to deal with just about any situation.

That's why I chose Gerrard over Torres.

Midfield options far outweigh striking options.

I can switch Gerrard for any midfielder in the game for GW 27 and GW 28 with my current plan.

Currently, GW 27 player is going to be Nasri, and GW 28 will probably be Lampard, but if games get postponed, I can just hold off on the GW 28 transfer or better still, save it and do two at once later down the line.

The brilliant thing is this is probably the slowest the prices have moved the whole season. Wildcard now and you miss out on most of the tasty bargains at the end of the month. Plus with only three transfers between double gameweeks, no wildcarder is going to be able to mould a great team for the latter.

I beg to differ. These fixtures between 24 and 28 are some of the tastiest all year, and they favor certain teams. With the right team management and planning, you can put a huge amount of distance between yourself and a rival before they can do anything about it.

It just seems strange to me. Most on here would have prepared for the Blackpool Liverpool DGW this week, so how many more players would they want from the 4 other teams in the DGW 24 (Villa, Fulham, Man U, Wigan) who will also be good long term transfers? I don't think enough to warrant the wildcard.
I just see the wildcard being ridiculously more useful when the transfer deadline has passed and we know the movers and shakers who could explode into form. GW 27 seems to be perfect not only because of the 8 teams in DGWs but also it's a good time after the transfer deadline to figure out which transfered players are going to play well for their new clubs.

That's the thing though, I don't see any big January moves. It's just not the time for clubs to buy new players. Dzeko aside, and I'm very wary of him, it doesn't look like there are going to be any big transfers coming in.

If you look more carefully at the fixtures too, GW 24 starts and ends certain runs.

Chelsea's fixtures stiffen, Arsenal's fixtures become the best in the league, ManUtd are worthy of investment, and on the whole, it's a run that is there to be taken advantage of.

Yeah I'm along the same lines.

I've just used mine, made 5 changes. I had a decent 11 for this week without doing it, but I've looked to increase potential for this week as well as being set up for next weeks doubles.

I can then tinker with a trade or 2 and also look to have 2 free trades ahead of GW27. Then at some stage after that, I have my second wild card to play for the run in.

That was in reply to camzy.

I'm not too interested to worry about transfers. The main prospects for me aren't going to be moving clubs and anyone coming in isn't going to effect their position in their teams anyway.

Kolarov's defensive qualities are irrelevant. It's the exposure he gives to defensive points that matter.

The entire CIty rearguard (with the exception of Hart) is subject to rotation & therefore blasted frustrating to own.

Peeps, which would be the main priority for you this weekend? (I'm thinking the next 4 or 5 GWs too)

Rodallega (FUL, ars, AVL, wba, BLA) or
Hangeland (wig, STK, liv, NEW, avl)

At the moment, I'm swaying towards Rodallega in for Elmander.

He's cheap, doesn't appear to be a rotation threat, has favourable fixtures (for a player without a DGW) and is playing in behind Tevez. While I haven't got Tevez I think Yaya is decent Citeh coverage. Thought he was unlucky not to get BPs against Arsenal.

No he didn't. He was absolute garbage vs City. I lost count of the number of shots he hoofed over or wide. One free kick on target late on doesn't let him off the hook. He needs games, and lots of them, just as Rooney did when getting a slating from the special needs of FFS.

You get back half of the profit you made on the player, rounded down. So if you paid 10.0 for a player, and he is now worth 10.5, you get 10.2 when you sell him. If he goes up to 10.6, you'd get 10.3 when you sell him.

Lots of games for the subs to play in the cups

More gametime in league for Fabs and RVP

Don't follow your logic there, Wenger's been fielding pretty strong sides in the Carling cup this season. Both he and every Arsenal fan going are desperate for silverware, even if it's the mickey mouse cup so expect Fabregas & co to be involved.

Arsenal have 2 legs to beat ipswich they wont need to risk their stars

Big players who have been benched recently such as arshavin, chamackh , bendtner etc can easily play and i expect them to with the schedule of games coming up.

I know it's two legs but you'd imagine Wenger will want a 2 goal cushion going into the 2nd leg, at the very least not have any pressure going into the 2nd leg. So i'd be pretty confident of Fabregas playing it, RVP perhaps not.

Stick N'Zogbia in for Brunt for his double week. Maybe Al Halbsi instead of Kingson who'll lose his place in about a month.
Foley's fixtures are awful, look elsewhere.

I'm going to be generous here. 8/10.

      I quite like it.

Berbatov is probably a better choice than Rvp on current form and fixtures.

Your midfield is good, defense is well covered.

      S. Taylor or Simpson are preferable to Foley though.

Have no pressing transfer issues, so thinking of transferring in each week the best striker for that set of games, as I have Torres for the current double and am not fussed about losing the 0.1

Anyone else doing a similar thing?

Who would everyone's number 1 striker choice be each GW over the next few? (excluding Tevez, as I have him too, and won't be transferring because I'd lose too much)

    I'm currently thinking...

GW23: Torres (at home against biggest rivals)
GW24: Rooney (for double / Torres for double)
    GW25: Rooney
    GW26: Dzeko
    GW27: Van Persie
    GW28: Drogba

I agree with Dzeko, maybe just keep Rooney that week as I have Tevez. Still want RVP for GW27, but planning on getting Drogba back for GW28 as I have Nani for United coverage, and Chelsea have a decent run of fixtures after that

Quiet please, I have something to say:

    OK, so…From this:

    Foster/Carson
    Konch/Bosingwa/Rafael/Kolarov/Djourou
    Nani/Fab/Bale/VDV/Adam
    Tevez/Berbs/Elmander

    0.0 in the bonk.

    To this:

    Flappyhandski/Al Habsi
    Alcaraz/Rafael/Kolarov/Djourou/Hutton
    Nani/Fab/Bale/VDV/N’Zog
    Tevez/Berbs/Rodallegaga

1.5 in the bank, then slowly get rid of some of the Wigan’s after their double gameweek.

    Yes-yes or no-no?

    hi all

so much talk about wildcards. given my current team (and the value tied up in it), i'm thinking using the wc might be totally counterproductive. take a look and let me know if you'd change anything drastically enough to resort to the WC:

    jaask - al-habsi
    konch - rafael - coleman - foley - alcaraz
    vdv - nani - nasri - gerrard - yaya
    drogba - campbell - torres

Drogba for a start after this week.

Konch and your goalies also need replacing, but you have a point, your team is good up to GW 24 at least then you might want to WC away your Wigan players.

OMG another idiot. Stockdale currently much better option than Begovic. Simpson/Taylor absolutely not an upgrade for Foley. And Hughes/Pantsil the worst two options for Fulham at the back, Hangeland/Baird both better. Bent to Berb however sounds decent.

See, you keep talking up Gerrard on this page, and I'm struggling to justify it. I don't think Liverpool is worth investing, even on their double. I think Nasri is in great form, and I think he has been great WITH Fabs back.

I don't have the money that you do, so I can't just slide Lampard in for the Gerrard/Nasri spot in week 28, but I think Nasri is the safe bet in that little space.

Also, while I have your intention:

you're fine with no Man City defense coverage?
          Why S Taylor?
Any plan for carrol, should he return to form?

            Fine without City coverage.

They don't have double gameweeks, and their entire defense except Hart (who's now probably overpriced) is subject to rotation.

            S. Taylor is cheap, Newcastle are a decent defensive punt, and it enables me to spend funds on attack and midfield.

Carroll can come in on my final striker spot if he finds form again. But in the mean time, tough fixtures, no double gameweeks until 27 means I can happily do without.

              Cool, good points.

One other one: Berbatov. Is rotation worrysome? I am certainly getting ihm for my wk 24 WC as well, but I was going to ditch him for Carrol or a blackpool striker come week 28, and use the funds to possibly spring for Lampard.

Good idea? or is Berbatov a long term person to keep?

I think Berbatov is looking like the real deal this season (provided Rooney is fit and playing).

SAF seems to trust him more, and I think he's a great buy with his current fixtures.

If he looks like he's not doing the business, at that price range, it's an easy switch to Van Persie.

I'm not talking Gerrard up. I'm starting to doubt him.

On paper, looking at the fixtures, he should outscore Nasri easily, but his form and Liverpool in general, are just awful at the moment.

I'm considering just sticking with Nasri for GW 24 even though Gerrard has a double gameweek.

I'm going to give him the next two games to assess whether he's worth getting, or else I'm just going to stick with Nasri...

Yeah that's something I overlooked when I planned my first WC team. Who to bench?

N'Zog is going to score well in the double GW, I'm fairly sure of that. But if it means you have to bench one of Tevez and Van Der Vaart, it could be better to use a transfer on your defense.
