Transfer activity is particularly rampant this week, with hordes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers choosing to play their winter wild cards early into January. Many are looking to pack their attacking ranks full of powerful point-devourers and compensate for their ‘Galácticos’ style spending with a bargain defence. However, your backline needn’t consist of reserve team players you’ve barely heard of to accommodate those big-hitters in midfield and up front, with plenty of worthwhile discount options available.

Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz, priced at £4.5 million on the FPL game, is one of these ‘value’ options. The Paraguyan international is not just there to make up the numbers though; he has proven to be an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s set-up so far this season, having played in every Premier League fixture bar one (which he missed through suspension) after signing for the Latics in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugge. Don’t let the suspension put you off though, as Alcaraz is anything but a dirty player; apart from the dismissal against Manchester United, he has received just one booking so far this term.

Alcaraz has managed to chalk-up an impressive FPL return of 59 points and his magnitude to Wigan has not gone unnoticed by the Bonus Points committee, who have dealt him an hefty 10 so far, a total bettered by only one other defender, Gary Cahill of Bolton. A rather ambitious sum for a player whose team currently sit 19th in the Premier League, 1 point off bottom-placed West Ham.

As well as his low valuation and capacity to attain points, it is Wigan’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures (FUL, ars & AVL, wba, BLA, liv,) that also make Alcaraz an eye-catching choice. With the exception of a tricky clash at The Emirates -the first match of their double Gameweek 24- you would have to fancy them to achieve something from the rest of those fixtures and Roberto Martinez must be looking to this run of games as a means of rekindling his side’s season.

Just two defenders in a similar price-range have managed to score more FPL points than Alcaraz this season; Sunderland’s previous Watchlistee Phil Bardsley and Blackpool’s Ian Evatt. With an ownership of 3.9% Alcaraz proves to be slightly less popular than his counterparts, so could be seen as a good “differential” over the coming weeks.

Is there rumours of Fabs being rested this weekend? No one in the posts above seem to recommend him for captain, even though he is second in the poll.

There has been no indication of him being rested so thankfully people are not going on about it so much. Unlike all the 'Drogba very likely to be dropped' posts - please don't post 'very likely' comments when it is based on an opinion or hunch.

15 mentions of N'Zogbia on this page so far.

Do you think he's a valid captain choice bearing in mind that I don't have Tev, Drogs, Lamps or Fabs? Better than captaining Malouda or Nasri?

      Hmm.

He's a consistant average point scorer which is great for the longer run but I look to at least have the possibility of a huge haul from my captain so I'd rather go with Malouda or Nasri.

Forced to wildcard early due to 7 players unavailable. How does this look? Heavy on Arsenal but they seem to have the best fixtures and couldn't choose one of Fab and Nasri:

    Foster, Begovic

    Vidic, Coleman, Paintsil, Djourou, Simpson

    Fabregas, Nani, VDV, Nasri, Adam

    Tevez, Berbatov, Carroll

Main worry is it leaves this week's side looking pretty poor but sets me up well for the next few weeks I reckon.

Good team. I'd cut Vidic - he's not worth his price tag - and go with young Rafael instead. Would allow you to do something funky right now or at a later stage.

Your squad is great. Are you realistically going to be able to predict who the best starting 11 are every week though?

After being fed up of having points on the bench last season I opted to focus on as strong as possible starting 11 this season. It means I've got cheap options who always play on the bench which I appreciate isn't ideal. Although on the whole my tactic has worked as I'm in the top 5k.

I think 15 strong players is a wise move, with all the DGW's, domestic cup competitons, european football rotation is the enemy.

It will mean having points on the bench sometimes but thats better than having a 3 shite bags coming on when your players get rotated.

Cheers for the input guys - I'd considered Rafael, just been burnt so often in the past by going for the cheaper option more prone to rotation (Bosingwa, Kolarov, Konchesky etc) but Rafael does seem to be first choice.

Yeah agreed, I think that's where I've went wrong this year (after being just outside top 1k last year I'm 176k this year) - wrong choices = far too many points on bench. Playing around a bit more and going for the tactic of a strong 11 with cheap bench options I could have this:

        Foster, Begovic

        Rafael, Coleman, Paintsil, Djourou, Simpson

        Lampard, Fabregas, Nani, VDV, Ferguson

        Tevez, Berbatov, Campbell

Less DGW options but would allow me to play the big four in midfield and the big two up front every week and rotate Ferguson and Campbell accordingly. Any thoughts on the better team/tactic?

What transfer to make? Thinking whether to wc on wk 24.. Will be away the first two weeks of feb, so won't have much (if any) time to wc on 27, which would be my preferred option..

I'm worried Bent might pitifully fail to put the ball in the back of the net for 3 yards again!

This guy hypnotised my friend yesterday, and then later on she got really drunk and insisted someone had drunk her pint. She was being well annoying, but I wonder if the two are linked?

Really drunk people tend to make outrageous claims, hypnotism is total bollocks, someone tried to hypnotise me once it was the most ridiculous excersise ever, I just laughed in her face basically.

      Now voodoo, that sh1ts real!
