Transfer activity is particularly rampant this week, with hordes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers choosing to play their winter wild cards early into January. Many are looking to pack their attacking ranks full of powerful point-devourers and compensate for their ‘Galácticos’ style spending with a bargain defence. However, your backline needn’t consist of reserve team players you’ve barely heard of to accommodate those big-hitters in midfield and up front, with plenty of worthwhile discount options available.

Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz, priced at £4.5 million on the FPL game, is one of these ‘value’ options. The Paraguyan international is not just there to make up the numbers though; he has proven to be an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s set-up so far this season, having played in every Premier League fixture bar one (which he missed through suspension) after signing for the Latics in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugge. Don’t let the suspension put you off though, as Alcaraz is anything but a dirty player; apart from the dismissal against Manchester United, he has received just one booking so far this term.

Alcaraz has managed to chalk-up an impressive FPL return of 59 points and his magnitude to Wigan has not gone unnoticed by the Bonus Points committee, who have dealt him an hefty 10 so far, a total bettered by only one other defender, Gary Cahill of Bolton. A rather ambitious sum for a player whose team currently sit 19th in the Premier League, 1 point off bottom-placed West Ham.

As well as his low valuation and capacity to attain points, it is Wigan’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures (FUL, ars & AVL, wba, BLA, liv,) that also make Alcaraz an eye-catching choice. With the exception of a tricky clash at The Emirates -the first match of their double Gameweek 24- you would have to fancy them to achieve something from the rest of those fixtures and Roberto Martinez must be looking to this run of games as a means of rekindling his side’s season.

Just two defenders in a similar price-range have managed to score more FPL points than Alcaraz this season; Sunderland’s previous Watchlistee Phil Bardsley and Blackpool’s Ian Evatt. With an ownership of 3.9% Alcaraz proves to be slightly less popular than his counterparts, so could be seen as a good “differential” over the coming weeks.

Have you actually booked dinner somewhere? I always cook these days, since restaurants tend to give you shitty set menus.

I remember one day we went out early, it was a really nice day, and we had fruit salad for breakfast and a pie-minister pie for lunch. Good times. I'll have to get planning myself now.

Yep, I'm not convinced City will play in such a direct manner that he'll score a huge amount of goals - Tevez could still be the guy dinking them in but equally he might come to suffer like Rooney has with berbs taking the lead in front of goal. Interesting to see the points predictions in the Members area. This season seems like a total lottery with regard to the big names.

There's two players I want out for GW24 ->Brunt and Drogs.

If I save my transfer, I'd get N'Zog and Rooney/Berbatov in next week.
If Drogs is confirmed to be benched I'll get Tevez in for this week and play my WC next week.

IF you're set on playing the WC next week and Drogs is confirmed bench (I think he'll play) then that makes sense. If you've only got those 2 transfers planned then I doubt it will make that much difference whether you do Zog this week or next, Brunt and Zog should similar scores this week I imagine.

what is your thought on when to use your WC as you have a pretty strong team atm. First I thought using it in GW27 is better for me as only would have a few more DGW players if I'd play it in GW24. Then playing it in GW24 would also set up my team quite nicely for GW27 with 2/3 transfers in the time between those weeks.

I think I've got enough dgw players for 24 (cole to rafael and barton to fabs next week on two frees), so I'm going to save it until we know what's happening in 28 with the potential cup related postponements and either use it 26 or 27 depending on how many frees I need for 28.

Fabs played 90 mins midweek against some rugby players (apparently) so there's nothing to say he won't be rested.

Mark_Gold- I wouldnt hav VDV captain! Id sooner hav Nasri or Tevez. A fully rested Nasri would b my choice though...

I know Nasri's a good choice, mate, but lately the goals have dried up a bit.And Tevez has always disappointed me whenever he is given the armband for a home game.VdV and Nani are the only two options and since VdV is at home,it has to be him.

Difficult call. If you don't have Tevez, it could be a dencent shout. Nasri has the armband atm in my team

Aus v South Korea game tonight (Aus time). A group game - but if Aus win the odds will strengthen on going deeper into knockout stage.

Whilst both Brunt and NZog are key players for their teams, in a long term Chris is more stable as a player and mentally than Charles...

I think Zog will get more points long term, and particularly over the next 4 GWs.

Interesting fact: In competitive sports of all kinds, it's considered form to try to match the games of the top professionals. However, when giant killers refuse to play in the generally accepted method, they often win.

Hence Fabregas was bitching about the "rugby players" when in fact it's a very smart way to play against Arsenal.

I love it when Arsenal bitch about stuff like that, like only they play *real* football and everyone else is somehow cheating.
