Roberto Mancini made the surprise decision of fielding his new hit man Edin Dzeko from the start at Eastlands against Mick McCarthy‘s Wolves on Saturday, despite the Bosnian not having participated in a competitive game since mid-December.

The Man City boss also lined City up in his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation and Fantasy Managers far and wide must have feared the worse when Carlos Tevez was moved from the lone front man role that has served him so well to out left, in order to accommodate Dzeko.

As the game developed, however, it became clear that Dzeko’s strength and stature not only gives City a more physical focal point up front, it also affords Tevez a freedom he has barely found all season. The result? Tevez, having scored one goal in his last six games at Eastlands, netted a double and was awarded the three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

A look at City’s last two home games shows a marked difference in how Tevez and Dzeko interpret the lone forward role within the City system and suggests that despite the initial reservations of Fantasy Managers, Tevez could be even more of a danger in the second half of the season, with Dzeko already showing a willingness and intelligence that the likes of Jo, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz failed to demonstrate.

Tevez v Blackpool

As the heat map against Blackpool shows, Tevez was fairly static in his movement, playing 73% of all passes in the final third of the pitch. He made 26 passes that day but barely a single one was played in his own half as he stayed high up the pitch, which makes him easier to contain for opposition defences. Mancini’s side have been somewhat predictable at Eastlands this season; eight times they have scored just one goal or failed to find the net at all at home. Intriguingly, the only other time they have scored four at home was in game week 20, where an injury to Tevez allowed Mario Balotelli to play the lone striker role and subsequently bag a hat-trick.

The Average Position map also backs this up; Tevez (32) is isolated up top, with Yaya Toure (42) and David Silva (21) a substantial distance behind him. City’s shape doesn’t seem particularly cohesive in this instance, with less fluidity and threat to their play the closer they get to the opposition goal.

Dzeko v Wolves

The Bosnian showed a real understanding of the target man role that showed just why he was so sought-after throughout Europe, with a performance that already suggests he’ll be a fundamental factor in City’s bid for goals and glory as the season unfolds.

This heat map from the Wolves game sums up just how differently Dzeko works the lone front man role. He made 32 passes, with 31% in his own half, as his mobility proved difficult for the Wolves defence to keep him under control. He dropped back to link with the Man City midfield time and again -which culminated in his assist for Yaya Toure‘s goal- thus freeing up the space for Tevez to take advantage of.

Dzeko made just 49% of his passes in the final third, a substantial difference when compared to Tevez above. With a physique seemingly tailor-made for the Premier League, Dzeko already looks like being of great benefit to the team overall.

A look at this Average Position map above shows how, despite the player’s respective positions in the City starting XI, Tevez was positioned just as central and as far forward as Dzeko (10) against Wolves. This, in turn, allowed Yaya Toure to be nearer the forward line, and it showed in a performance that saw the Ivorian grab a goal and 2 FPL Bonus Points for his performance.

Post-match, Dzeko warned there’s plenty more to come as he comes to terms with the English top division:

“The game is different. It is harder than Germany. It is probably going to take me a few games to find my feet, but I am very happy to be here and if we keep winning there will be no problem.

Tevez v Wolves

Tevez showed on Saturday just how much the freer role suits his style; as this Heat Map shows, he floated all over the pitch without restriction; dropping deep and roaming forward, moving central and appearing on the right, thus making a mockery of his left wing starting berth. Tevez also saw far more of the ball, making 44 passes, a huge jump in comparison to his Blackpool performance.

Indeed, Tevez saw more touches of the ball, made more passes and had more successful dribbles than any other forward last weekend. Add his two goals to the mix and the knock-on impact of Dzeko already bodes well for all the Argentine’s Fantasy Owners as the season, and the title race, starts to heat up.

Mancini was also thoroughly impressed by the debutant, saying after the match:

“He played very well for his first game, especially as he has only been with us a week and only recently returned from a winter break. He will get better as he gets used to his new team-mates and I think he will do well alongside Carlos and Mario Balotelli.”

The strength in depth of City’s squad will no doubt see changes in playing personnel over the next few games, but judging by their play going forward on Saturday, Mancini’s formation certainly seems to be one issue that requires little need to change, in light of Dzeko’s acquisition.

    Hi folks.

I can put out the following team next week but having lost Rafael due to suspension, I no longer have a MNU defender and 6 DGWers. I have played my WC and had hoped to carry over my transfer for some post DGW shuffling. However, MNU looked very solid at the back and I reckon at least one clean sheet looks very likely. I can't do a straight swap due to lack of cash. Worth a 4 pointer? I would be prepared to do it to bring in 2 DGWers but not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

    Many thanks

Much as your team crumbled Sunday afternoon, by the powers of greyskull your Brenda Fricker lookalike Steve Bruce must count himself a very, very lucky man today.
Even more so in offloading Bent for sillymoney. 🙂
I've the same problem, offloaded Konchesky before last GW to Skrtel though (little improvement points wise). Thinking of going for that Walker lad from Villa instead of Kolarov. Kelly might be a good pick but is not set in stone on the teamsheet, but at 4.2 could still be a good buy.

Everyone is going on about it being a great deal, I don't agree. Sunderland will regret it if he leaves. Look at all the goals last year, without them they would have been close to the drop. I'm not even a big fan of his, but you can't ignore his goalscoring record.
They may have £19m in their sky rocket but that means nowt unless you can replace those goals.

Gyan might be a better player but the jury is still out on him whilst Bent is proven. Also Welbeck will return to United at the end of the season. That is leaving yourself short especially when their highest scoring midfielder Henderson with 1 goal.

It isn't all about goals. Gyan is not a natural finisher, but is very athletic and industrious.

If Sunderland need to abandon 4-4-2, Bent wouldn't do as good a job up front on his own as Gyan would.

Bent has played as a lone striker to great success at charlton as evidenced in his past dreamteam points returns. Gyan hasnt scored brilliantly in any formation at any club so i know which id prefer.

I absolutely agree that you can't argue with that goal scoring record, for me it's that I think they have a player able to step up and grab lots of goals in Gyan (and Welbeck this season of course) and that that amount of cash can be used to bring in lots of quality wherever Steve Bruce feels necessary.

I also think that Sunderland are trying to be a modern team and would expect them to want players that work more for the team than Bent.

I totally agree with granville. Ive never liked bent (possibly because i never have him in my dreamteam season after season yet he always scores shed loads) but hes a proven goalscorer. Welbeck is better as an outwide member of a front three in my opinion and gyan.... Dont get me started on gyan. Bruce will regret this if he doesnt get another striker.

              Djourou Coleman Vidic

              Nani Fab Adam Dempsey

              Campbell VP Torres

Thats 7 DGW's without compromising my team too much...benched Hart VDV Mummy Simpson

But should I go with Torres or Roo? Same price, both DGW, both searching for form... which ever they will be my captain also. Big decision!! But I feel Tores might be the better differential with so many in my league prob opting for Roo.
And Gerard is due back for the second game, surely Torres will come good, its now or never for Liverpool. If they fail in this DGW, against the teams they face, that will be the air out of the King Kenny return and season over for Liverpool. This is a huge DGW for them, their whole season boils down to it, they need at least 4 points and I think they will come through - thoughts?

In my rough analysis, I don't think you can go wrong with Gordon/Harper for 8.8m.

Begovic is also a decent alternative to Harper. I think Stoke's defense is a little better than Newcastle's.

Great article and if I may pat myself on the back a bit I saw this coming.

I think it is a trend in modern football that skillful players do great damage coming from the attacking wide positions in 433 and 4231 because they get the ball running towards the opposing goal rather than with their back to the goal and a huge centre back all over them.

Plenty of the world's leading scorers right now have had great success in these positions and while I should add that playing centrally of course can be good from a fantasy perspective we would probably do best in trying to get rid of the idea that being pushed out wide (in the attacking positions) is a bad thing.

Now watch Tevez being piss poor in their next five games and me being the fool.

I have a recollection of him being creditted as a player who makes everyone around him look like better players. Surely that can only be good for Tevez?

                  Absolutely.

The second goal against Wolves was a fine example of that, where Tevez was left completely free because 3 defenders surrounded Dzeko instead. Of course this was a mistake from Wolves side but there is no reason why similar situation would not appear again.

See above. Reckon Gordon/Harper is pretty strong. Obviously they rotate perfectly, have decent fixtures rotating till the end, and both teams are on decent for defensively imo.

It's very hard to say, I think Walker will keep his place then you have Dunne, Collins, Cuellar, Warnock, Clark for the remaining spots.

I would have an educated guess at Walker, Collins, Dunne, Clark as current first choice back 4.

There is a strong possibilty of roation though with FA cup, DGW etc.

                  I would only consider Walker.

I suppose he could play on the right. The one thing Pienaar does have over Krancjar is pace, so he'd slot more easily into Tottenham's high-tempo, counter-attacking system.

what do ye think of my wild card team

              vds

              coleman nelsen djouro

              fabergas nzogbia vaughan nani vdv

              torres tevez

              bench= carrol huth foster

I will then get rvp and cahill in for torres and nzogbia for their double gameweeks!

              Hi all,
Do you think Fabs is worth the extra money over Nasri? E.g. I could do:

Rafael / Fabs / Adam (or similar)

              or

              Vidic / Nasri / Bale

              Thanks!

Since he is off penalties and also free kicks I think you can look elsewhere in the Arsenal team for value.

Oh, thanks a lot.... Fabregas was the founding block of my potential WC team, been holding off getting him until the big reshuffle, but you saying that has put the thought in my head "what could I do with the team if I didn't get Fabregas?".... Urgh, back tinkering....

Inalize - I've the same dilemma although already have Torres and Tevez. Do you reckon Drogs to RVP is better than Rooney or Berbatov?

Bench Kolarov Nasri and one of NZog and Adam - not sure>
Maybe i have compromised too much just to get DGW players!

No use benching nZog/adam for the double. Then rather get and bench Brunt in place of NZog if you can afford him as he has double coming up in gw 27.

I went for Dempsey simply because he has better fixtures and done well in his last game. Wigan have Arsenal away and I can't see him taking the bps away from the likes of RVP or Fabs.

Would it be crazy to replace Tevez with RVP just for one week? I'm playing my wildcard after this week. It's either Tevez or Torres, but I'm of two minds whether to hang on to Torres. He has a double, but Liverpool have been playing shit.

Hi guys im wildcarding but im preety happy with my back line so just looking for advice on the mid and forwards

              fabragas nani VDV ferguson adam
              vpersie rooney tevez

              £0.4 left in bank

i know i have gone all out on the forwards but they just look so nice together! I upgraded nasri to fabs as i seriously cut down my defender costs which freed up a fair bit just looking for some further advice to finish it all off thanks

A RVP and Malouda (4 point)
B Rooney and Young (4 points)
              C Torres (0 points)
D RVP and VDV (4 points)

What are peoples thoughts on Kelly and Berba playing both this DGW?

Can get 8 DGWers this week and 9 in 27 if I WC and they each play both. Only 5 otherwise if I don't WC.

Kelly maybe but def not Berba. He's too much of a rotation risk especially now that Hernadez has been introduced. Do your 7-8 players have good fixtures next week though?

Yeah wasn't sure on Berba, thanks. Might have to find a way to get Rooney in.

Yeah they look decent for 25 and 26, tried not to compromise too much. A lot of Arsenal, United and Liverpool with Tevez and Kolarov being worked in after. Much simpler before this WC malarky!
