Andy Carroll’s spell on the sidelines is set to continue as it has been widely reported today that the Newcastle top-scorer has suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh muscle injury. The muscle tear has seen him miss the side’s last five games, four of which were in the Premier League, and it appears that it could be a several more weeks before he is back in contention.

The injury apparently carries a high-risk should Carroll return too soon and it appears that Newcastle are understandably unwilling to gamble the long-term fitness of their star asset.

Manager Alan Pardew had hoped to have him back for the clash with Fulham next Wednesday and duly flew him out to the Magpie’s training camp in Portugal:

“We brought him here [Portugal] to start running, and the disappointing news is that he hasn’t. His injury is in the muscle, just above the tendon where it joins the knee, so it’s not an area that gets great circulation, and therefore doesn’t heal quickly. We’re hoping we can turn him around quickly, but now I have to say that Fulham is definitely out, and possibly even Arsenal [5 Feb – Gameweek 26]. We can’t rush him back.”

The manager went on to add that Carroll is to continue his globe-trotting and fly to Scandinavia for specialist treatment:

“We’ve had a conversation about sending him to the world’s best tendon repair specialist, at the Arctic end of Sweden, and he’s flying out there on Friday.”

Since Gameweek 21, at the beginning of January, Carroll has suffered a mass exodus in the FPL with over 317,000 getting rid, forcing a decline in his valuation from 6.5 to 6.1. Despite this, a surprising 33.3% of FPL managers still have the striker on their books. These latest developments will come as a bitter blow to those optimistically holding on, hopeful of an imminent recovery.

It is easy to see why the striker has proven so popular amongst FPL Managers, valued at just £5.0 million at the start of the season, Carroll has recorded 113 points, including 11 goals, 6 assists and 18 bonus points. But with big question marks hanging over the severity and recovery time involved in this injury, Carroll is currently a liability in Fantasy terms.

Viable replacement options around Carroll’s price-range include Bolton’s Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander who have previously offered strong returns but have declined badly in recent Gameweeks. Newcastle’s stand-ins – Shola Ameobi and Leon Best, offer some value lower down the bracket, but West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie looks the most likely straight swap right now. At 5.2 in the FPL, he has demonstrated form when fit and has a run of kind opponents in front of him which should give him the platform for further returns. This includes an attractive home double fixture (WHM WOL) in Gameweek 27.

The alternative of course is to upgrade Carroll to a high price option. With Robin Van Persie and Dimitar Berbatov currently firing and available for sub 10.0, suddenly there has been a shift from the preferred 3-5-2 formation to a 3-4-3 in the FPL, with investment being moved from midfield areas to in-form heavyweight forwards.

With some Fantasy Managers still sitting on wildcards until the double fixtures of Gameweek 27 arrive, we should expect further funds ploughed towards the big forwards, with Carroll likely to be sold on by the majority of his remaining active owners.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Berbatov wasn't rested much this season, only against Arsenal when he was never going to play no matter what. Walcott has been rested before this season.

Who are the best defenders for the coming gameweeks for under 5m?
I did have Bardsley but the fixtures are poor.
How long till Cahill will be back?
    Is Walcott a good gamble?

Too late to play my WC?

Seeing Berba going up is kinda forcing my hand a little. The aim would then be to try and carry 2 transfers either into or out of GW 27.

    Hi Guys

    Quick Question/piece of advice

This is my current team and I am activated my WC for GW25.

The players with an asterisk are the ones I am getting rid of.

What I really need to know is I am getting rid of the right players or do I need to change my thinking

    Fabianski* Jaaskalnien*

    Vidic Coleman Bardsley* Hangeland* Bosingwa*

    Davies* Adam Nani Nasri* Bale*

    Torres Elamander* Varney*

    Many Thanks

I would buy RvP and Berba Garg, but they were the players who scored all the points LAST WEEK.

Amazing how people seem to forget that 🙂

Er, nah, i like Odim. He's a good player and WBA fixtures are super.

I like Odem too, I'm buying him on my wildcard.

Most probably making RVP and Tevez my other strikers, trying to make do with only Rafael and Nani from United, although I will consider Berbatov a few more times before I finalize it.

I'd be deeply worried about Rooney, although he should still get points in home games. Bit much to pay for a player who might be stuck out wide in a 451 in away games unfortunately.

I may sell Carroll this week for Odem.

Would mean dropping N'Zog or VdV though.

I reckon N'Zog might do some long awaited damage at West Brom though, whereas Blackburn appear to have sorted themselves out under Keane, so Van der Vaart might have another quiet game.

I thought Murphy was to start at left back the rest of the season.. but McLeish is looking to sign Curtis Davies, which might put Ridgewell back at left back ?

Hard to find something else of value for 3.9, but when I sell Dempsey it gives me some room..

Why bother getting Dempsey at all if you're going to sell him next week (which you are wise to be doing next week, by the way)?

Waste of a wildcard pick if you ask me. Besides which, who out of your front 8 would you drop this week?

If you get a cheaper mid (Barton, N'Zog, Adam) you can upgrade Murphy so you have better defender options.

Who are the best defenders for the coming gameweeks for under 5m?
I did have Bardsley but the fixtures are poor.
How long till Cahill will be back?
    Is Walcott a good gamble?

I posted it up there but got no respone :/
The Walcott issue is the main one.

Every time I go to post a "help with my WC team" PhiL gets in before me!! But if anyone has the kindness to help me out which do you reckon out of 1 & 2:

I'm happy with GKs and DEFs and my definite forwards are Nani, VDV, A Young, RVP, Drogba, but do I go

    1) Nasri, Adam, Bent/Berbatov + 0.4m
    2) Walcott, Ferguson, Tevez + 0.9m

Playing w/c in GW26 probably. (Adam could change to similar price range MF)

    Thanks gents

      I'll help you out!

Are you absolutely sure you want to fill your wildcard teams with players like AYoung, Walcott, Ferguson and Bent? They might be great, but they are all punts in my opinion and I'd try to reduce the number of punts to 0-2 if I wildcarded.

How about Etherington, Adam, Tevez? Can you afford that? Oh well, option 1 would be my choice othwerwise although I think Nasri is a tough one. I believe in him in one way, but I doubt him in one way too. And when I wildcard I look to eliminate players I doubt.

@ Joe, I agree on Ferguson and I usually play 3-4-3
@ Gargamel, AV have excellent fixtures for the rest of the season after this week, but I dont really need both A Young & Bent and think Young could be the better option.
I too am not sure on Nasri, he's been good this season but I have Arsenal coverage with RVP so may look at someone like Etherington.

PhiL called me a fag t'other day for no good reason so I think I'll help you instead. 🙂
You're set on Drogba eh? There are better performing forwards out there for far less, to cover Chelsea I'm going to double up at the back as I see that as their strength.
However of the two options I would pick 1 as at least all of those players are nailed on. Consider Brunt, Dorrans or Odemwingie for GW27 too.

Nolan is a solid long term pick, I'm pretty sure he has scored more goals than any other midfielder. But it's the Ferguson bit I don't like, but if you're planning on a routine 3-4-3 it could work well.

With Nolan I could afford to keep Adam instead of Ferguson, or bring in Henderson, Parker, N'Zogbia or someone 5.7m or less.
Quite fancy Henderson could be a good differential myself.

Not seen enough of him to be honest, he was very quiet in both the Newcastle Sunderland games as he was too busy being completely outplayed 😉
Nolan does get his points in big gluts like Berbatov, but I think he'd be a good one. There is quite a bit of talk about Steven Ireland *bleurgh* coming in and I would think that he would have a big impact on Nolans points potential so keep an eye on that.
