A decidedly dull encounter at Anfield saw Liverpool grind out another three points and continue their mini-resurgence with a 1-0 victory over a battling Fulham. Elsewhere, the Carling Cup proved far more eventful, as Birmingham City edged out West Ham in extra time to progress to the final and hand us Fantasy Managers new fixture conundrums to unravel.

Liverpool’s win was their second victory in the space of five days, propelling them up to 7th in the Premier League and leaving them targeting a previously unimaginable European spot. In Fantasy terms many of their assets are slowly edging back onto our radars as possible differentials, although the blank for Fernando Torres will have bitterly disappointed his hopeful owners.

Kenny Dalglish employed a 4-5-1 with Torres supported on the flanks by Max Rodriquez on the left and Dirk Kuyt on the right, the returning Steven Gerrard worked in tandem with Raul Meireles; both seemed to play the box-to-box central midfield role and generally took control of the halfway line with neither afraid to attack. Christian Poulsen, who was in for the injured Lucas Leiva, played deeper protecting the back four.

Having failed to keep a clean sheet for 6 Premier League games, Liverpool have now earned consecutive shut-outs. With Martin Kelly, seemingly, a nailed-on starter, the right-back’s 4.3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation is now looking immensely attractive. Kelly was again impressive and continues to draw plaudits while Glen Johnson has looked effective enough at left-back.

Raul Meireles has become a Bonus Point darling in recent weeks; the Portuguese International picked up another maximum last night, giving him 8 over the last three fixtures. In Gameweek 24 he picked up a total of 19 FPL points, notching a goal and an assist at Wolves. With just 1.6% ownership and a price of 6.8, he remains a realistic candidate for our watchlists.

Fulham continue to be a difficult outfit to break down and have conceded just 3 goals in their last 6 league outings, earning them 3 clean sheets in the process. Investment in their back four needs to be carefully considered however; with a couple of tricky games on the horizon (NEW, avl, CHE, mcy, BLA, Eve) they will find it hard to maintain their current run of defensive form. David Stockdale, priced at 3.9 in the FPL has proved an excellent short-term prospect between the sticks; it will be interesting to see if Mark Schwarzer can reclaim his place once he has returned from the Asian Cup.

For all their gritty defensive form, Fulham are still finding goals hard to come by. Moussa Dembele remains an interesting prospect however. The Belgian was awarded 2 bonus points last night as his influence on Fulham’s attacking play remains strong. If he can start to muster goals and assists, he certainly has the potential to be a decent option in the budget bracket as an FPL bench forward. Again however, Fulham’s tough run of opponents has to be considered.

Over in the Carling Cup, Alex McLeish made wholesale changes to his midfield with Alexander Hleb and Keith Fahey dropped and David Bentley cup-tied, in came Lee Bowyer, Craig Gardner and Sebastian Larsson. The 3-1 victory saw Bowyer and Gardner both claim goals, whilst Larsson also impressed. Following the disappointing 5-0 loss to Manchester United, McLeish may choose to keep his cup heroes in his starting XI for the FA Cup tie with Coventry.

Despite our Birmingham triple Gameweek hopes being dashed by their progress to the Carling Final, Birmingham’s key assets should still be looked at as potential point grabbers for their double home fixtures in Gameweek 27. As we stated in our earlier article, Birmingham follow this up with a blank fixture in Gameweek 28 and then another double in Gameweek 29.

Gardner and Larsson both started and impressed last night and they could be cheap FPL options, although McLeish continues to rotate in midfield areas and, right now, there appears little security on offer. Defensive targets, with Roger Johnson perhaps the key figure having scored two goals over recent matches, look to be more solid considerations.

On that front, the selection of Martin Jiranek at centre-back, allowing Liam Ridgewell to move to left-back, meant that David Murphy dropped to the bench. We were lining Murphy up as a potential bargain over the rest of the season given that he was earning starts following the season-long injury to Scott Dann; Murphy is priced at just 3.9 in the FPL. However, Jiranek was singled out for praise by McLeish and could now hold his starting role.

“We felt that Martin deserved his chance. Maybe I’ve been too cautious not giving him more playing time. I thought he was magnificent tonight.”

You can pick up the Czech for 4.5 in the FPL but the uncertainty surrounding his starts and those of Murphy, will likely discourage investment; hardly desirable as we approach Birmingham’s double Gameweek.

Only applies if your on the wildcard. You get as many people buy him in today. A rise requires 21,000 In but a drop only requires a 10% net transfer out.. so we all sell him on Sunday.

Since hardly anyone owns him its easier to drop him than to increase him. That's my understanding of the price system anyway.

I've just been thinking about the debate between WC in WK26 or 27. I was all set for pushing the button in WK26, but I've been looking at it again, and the only thing that I can think of gaining from that would be one extra free transfer after WK27 (other than saving on price rises - but my transfer plans can swallow a few rises). But if I don't do it until WK27, i will have another week to assess fitness and selection issues going into the DGW. In theory I should be able to set up my team better so that I gain enough extra points in the bag to more than cover a 4 pt hit for if the arsenal game doesn't happen in WK28. Am I missing something here? Or am I just confusing myself?

Really not much between the two, either way good good well or badly. Ultimately, the wildcard should have been played in GW24.

I got 110 points without using the wildcard because I saved two free transfers for that week, now I'm in a much better position given the fixture congestion. Players are bound to fall by the way side with injuries and what not.

Not for some people. I got 111 without it taking just a 4 point hit, so I can see what China mag is saying, but I don't think GW 27 has as many attractive DGW players/teams when 4 of them play 2 away games and 2 more have no game the following week.

I'm going to want 2 free transfers and prices might rise/fall too much like Nasri falling tonight maybe and cheap defenders getting less cheap by the week.

                  I've made this point already.

Most of the big points scorers were the big name players. These players were pretty much in most people's teams both wildcarders and non wildcarders.

Only Blackpool from this DGW have a double in GW27 so I imagine it'll be pretty hard to get 11 DGW27 players in without taking hits.

A lot of people are weeping and gnashing their teeth over not playing their wildcard in GW24 and I'm not really sure why they are.

Considering the fact that most people got about 100 pts whether they wildcarded or not I'd be prett annoyed that I got a triple figure score using my wildcard and yet people who didn't use up theirs got similar points scores.

I don't agree. If I Bent hadn't moved to villa I would have swapped him for Berbatov. Then I could have got more than 120 pts for the week without a WC. All of those who wildcarded in WK24, with plans to do transfers to take advantage of the DGW in WK27 are sure to see most of the plans disrupted by injuries and fixture disruption. I still think that waiting as late as possible was always the sensible option UNLESS you didn't have the foresight to set your team up steadily to take advantage of GK24 using free transfers.

I'm with you here. I did absolute rubbish this week because I didn't play my wildcard and didn't spend points. The best thing for me is now to wait till GW 27 and take advantage of any injuries and uncertainties between now and then.

              Correct, China mag.

Wildcarding now for GW27 seems pointless to me because you're tempting fate if 2 or 3 of your players go down with injuries. Especially as there are 2 league matches and an FA cup game in between for most teams.

I also don't know why you'd do it in GW26 other than the fact that you either have real bad luck with injuries/players getting dropped or you got too impatient and couldn't wait that extra week?

I just think leaving it until GW27 gives you more protection for injuries etc.

Would the best way to use the wildcard be to use it in gw 26 (with the dgw in 27 in mind), save a transfer in gw 27 and then have two transfers for det dgw in 28?

Thats the big bum-squeaking risk. Price rises/falls versus the certainty of fitness and selection. I've planned my WC team with about 0.5 - 1m in the bank to help cover.

Team at the moment: (2 free transfers)

            Foster Stockdale
            Alcaraz Coleman Rafael Bardsley Jara
            Adam Fab Nasri VDV Nani
            Tevez Rooney DJ

Currently I'm thinking Rooney & DJ OUT RVP & Odemwingie in to leave 1.3 in the bank.

What do you guys reckon? Maybe then I could upgrade Jara to a 5.3 defender for a 4 point hit? Good transfers?

If you get RVP you need to get rid of nasri (If you want an arsenal player to replace him, get walcott or Djourou)

Why do I need to get rid of Nasri? Cheers for advice i'm just wondering why I can't have 3 arsenal forwards? Too many eggs in one basket I suppose.

Walcott should hold the right spot & he'll probably get more points than nasri. Also fab & RVP on the pitch = less pts for nasri

I am not sure selling DJ when he has West Ham at home would necessarily be the best idea.

Though I am considering it as well. Can't make my mind up.

How does my team look for this gw? Was thinking of getting rid of Carroll but I'd quite like to play all my midfield so probably just hang on to him

            Al Habsi
            Vidic Rafael Skrtel
            VDV Nani Adam N'Zogbia Nasri

Think he was alright in the end.

I tried it, but all these whingeing ponces kept ringing up moaning about this that and t'other. I said to em, you wanna try walking a mile in my shoes son, I bloody captained VdV instead of Tevez last week. 26 bastard points it cost me.

Drink a glass of water backwards (from the opposite side of the glass) - you suck in water and air at the same time, which seems to work for me for some reason.

Imagine this is going to be one big fat let down... no way The Guardian could keep a massive story underwraps for 45 mins or however long this has been. It'd be out by now.

They might just be putting together their stories, verifying their sources, writing up the online article etc etc

I imagine journalism isn't just finding something and shouting it as loud as you can as quick as you can.

              I really hope it's BIG!!!!!!

I hope this big transfer story is something that hasn't already been gossiped about, or at least for a while. Something out of the blue.

            I'm expecting an anticlimax though.

What an anti-climax. Inter will make a £40m bis for Bale in the summer. That's not breaking news just the kind of idle gossip ypu get every day in the Sun / Mirror. Means F-all til it actually happens.

Guardian just trying to ramp up the hits on their website.

Well I for one will now ignore the Guardian making such grand claims from now on.
