Gameweek 26 saw 256 fantasy managers battle it out in the first round of the Members Paddy Power Cup. With scores spanning a range of 78 points and an incredible average score of 75, heavy defeats were the order of the round, and ties decided by the slightest of margins evoked more heartbreak than normal. To see the full list of results click here, for a brief round-up of the highs and lows of the first round read on…

We had a total of nine centurions in the round, with Mark on the end of an absolute tonking from one of them:

  1. Civan 103 – 52 Mike
  2. Dick Fran Dyke 101 – 40 Ham
  3. Goose 104 – 66 CROUCHINHO
  4. Walky Talky 100 – 75 Chuckie
  5. stebwfc 107 – 86 alex234
  6. RafaMC 108 – 47 Mark
  7. Aldershot Rejects 102 – 78 AliMcGlashan
  8. fiacloir 105 – 85 Jimmers
  9. xabi_14 100 – 86 n1jimmy

Although achieving the top score in the round, RafaMC didn’t  inflict the heaviest defeat on poor Mark. That title goes to Cesc no Drogs who put the lowest scorer of the round, NuttyWutty, to the sword 93 – 30, putting a whopping 63 points between them. The fifth fixture on that list between stebwfc and alex234 was the highest aggregate scoring match-up of the round.

Drubbings aside, and there were six fixtures decided by just a single point. MagNanimous, biegs, Gavin, Boofstein, Dangeroussnails and Write Home, edged out bantamstu, Peter, kieran0426, Johnny Unitas, fudokung and Attila the Bum respectively.

Closer still was trisonetwo‘s 86 – 86 draw with tomcon, with the former advancing thanks to his superior overall rank.

The luckiest manager of the round is probably Geraldo1977, who squeezed into the second round with the lowest score good enough to get a win, as he saw off the aptly-named Cannon Fodder, 54 – 50.

At the other end of that spectrum, was Zizo and soulman27, who must bemused as to how they haven’t made the next round after losing 95 – 90 to Vanilla Kush F.C. and 94 – 90 to our very own Granville, respectively.

Although I think another extremely unlucky manager was Akers, who lost to pompeyfan somehow.

Congratulations to the 128 fantasy mangers progressing to the second round. The fixtures for the next stage will be announced in an article at the end of the week.

The prizes for the competition, provided by Paddy Power, are a free £150 bet for the winner, £75 for the runner-up and £50 for third place.

How about this for a wildcard team?

    Foster
    Kelly, Coleman, Huth
    Adam, Fabregas, Bentley, Walcott, Nani
    Odem, RVP

    Subs: Robinson, Tevez, Walker, Kolorov

    3.7 left
    Suggestions welcome

Wouldn't get Robinson. Rovers can't get a clean sheet to save their lives with Kean as manager. Stick with Begovic.

Nice team elsewhere. Arsenal overload is risky, but could pay off nicely.

So close to mine it's uncanny... (I have different keepers: Begovic and Hennessey... and Ashley Young instead of Nani - at the moment)

      So obviously I like it!

I'll use my bank to upgrade Odem to Saha or bring in Baines at the back for the Everton double.

New page but don't miss what Mac1988 just posted:

"Having spent 9 months sidelined with a knee injury last season, the worst had been feared for Djourou with initial reports claiming the 24-year-old could be out for anything between three weeks and four months.

Nevertheless a statement from the Swiss FA confirms that the player received only bruising to his knee and could be back for Arsenal inside seven days. Diagnosis of the problem is thought to have initially been delayed by swelling and bruising which has since subsided."

It says Feb 12th just because that's when his next game is. RVP just didn't want to play a pointless friendly for Holland so he phoned it in. No-one really knows about Djourou's injury yet though

Nice for me that there is a fair bit of uncertainty. I am tripling up on Arsenal attack so he won't be in anyway.

Hope he is fit for Arsenal's sake though.

I'd assume with this news that we'll hear from Arsene if he's fit for the weekend in his Friday press conference... it'll be the most asked question considering all the attention Arsenal's defence is getting. Djourou owners should at least hold fire until Friday / Sat morn if they can help it.

Anyone worried about benching Tevez this week? On paper it's a tough fixture, should be a tight game etc.

But we know what he is like, he will be well up for this game which makes benching him a nightmare.

But i don't want to bench Nani at home either.

Will bench VDV potentially if we have confirmation of his double being off, otherwise....

Must be others with this dilemma?

Yes - I have to decide between Nani and Tevez. Think I'm going to play Tevez as he's on pens. I also have Vidic who I don't really want to bench either.

That's different, but the signs are (and I know it's not concrete) that VDV will miss at least the Sunderland game. Of course if he plays against Blackpool he could get a decent score, but I'd rather field a player I know will be starting over VDV, as he had a longer-than-expected comeback from injury in December.

I think he was shown as having a yellow card in error one week and it was actually given to someone else so he is on 8.

I'd keep him till after the Wolves game in GW28 and then get rid.

Not when he will miss 2 games. He's picked 3 up in the last 4 games. I give him 2 more yellows in the next 4 games then that's 2 games in 4 GW after his double, compared to 5 for Cahill (4 at home) or 4 for Young.

Plus I sold/rebought him and have optimum profit from him, can sell for 0.2 less than his price now.

Lol these mystery injuries that pop up before Internationals always give me a good chuckle i must say.
Let's see.. Keane, Gordon, Foster, Gabby, RVP, VDV, Djourou, Skrtel, Gerrard, Crouch, Dorrans, Myhill, Rio, Brunt and Tomkins to name but a few. My personal favourite was Fabregas who pulled out of Spain's squad due to:
"suffering from an upset stomach" You swear he was trying to get off going to a maths exam in school, i'm sure Wenger was more than happy to write him a sicknote 😀

Tevez & RVP for sure but I'm getting rid of Berba, with Uniteds fixtures Nani and Vidic are enough, not many rivals have Berba so it's minimal risk, going with a cheapie who will be either Odem, Doyle or Zigic, maybe someone else, that is the undecided bit.

Yeah he is horrible in that way, got him for the first time this season for the last double so he's not let me down but theirs midfielders I'd rather put my money into.

Going to Asia in april so will miss the last few gameweeks, so might use it to set my team up in case i can't get to a computer as much as i would like.

After 3 hours of fiddling I have come up with this team. Please offer some input for my efforts.

    Szczesny (Ars), VDS (MU)

Carr (BIR) Kelly (LFC) Kolarov (MC) Bardsley (SUN) Coleman (EVE)

Adam (BP) Meireles (LFC) Barton (NEW) Fab (ARS) Nani (MU)

Tevez (MC), RVP (ARS), Suarez (LFC)

Bardsley has terrible fixtures, Suarez is untested and will be eased into action, Carr is boring and VDS overpriced, the rest are all contenders for my own WC 🙂

Carr is just for the double game weeks. VDS is just for the double game week next week so I can use freebie on outfield. Suarez didn't play against Chelsea, but I'm hoping he will be played from the start at home. I could do Bardsley to Rafael. Will defo look into that.

      Don't like it.

VDS is too expensive. He's also sometimes rotated for no reason.

Carr and Bardsley could be better.

Suarez is a poor choice. He's not fit yet, and he's not even worth a punt seeing as his fixtures aren't good.

      Otherwise, solid.

As a matter of interest, and not to be pendantic Pete here, but why do you put the team names next to the players? It takes more time for you to type out? Call me a lazy poster!

I would stay well away from Suarez until we know what he is capable of in that Liverpool system, looks like he will be phased in and with current form there is no need for Kenny to risk him with full starts, he hasn't played a full game since November a Liverpool friend of mine tells me, rightly or wrongly!

Bardsley I would ship, Sunderland have awful fixtures and he has been lucky to feature so heavily in the attacking stats of late, I would prefer Huth or if money is an issue, Walker, as Villa have good fixtures and he is as cheap as chips.

Meireles, meh, not sure about him either, you are obviously a Liverpool supporter and want them in your team? I think he is a great player but I think going on past performances this purple patch is just that, a purple patch and may end, again, I think there is better value in Brunt/Etherington/Walcott for this week and the coming weeks.

      Other than that, bingo.

It takes me a matter of seconds to type out mate u lazt git.

Out of 12 games villa has kept 1 clean sheet, no no against blackpool away. Barsdsley is a main player who should just be subbed in difficult games as pirce to points is just too good. Suarez is a chance that I might just take, I could have torres, drog, rooney, berb; but I don't think they will do much this weekend, and I cannot think of anyone with a chance of scoring heavy. I think he will play at home to start him off on a winning foot.

Here’s my rough draft for my wildcard:

    Hart Szczesny/Foster

    Walker Kelly Coleman Kolarov Rafael

    Walcott Nani Bentley Adam VDV

    RVP Tevez Zigic/Odemwingie

Would leave me somewhere between £4-5mil in the bank although I will switch VDV (probs with Meireles) if he’s out for a couple of weeks or more. Just wondered what general opinion was? Trying to strike a balance for long term and the DGW, would prefer Zigic to Odemwingie but I’m conscious of paying for too many ARS/BIR players in GW28. After the DGWs I will spend the cash to upgrade Zigic/Odemwingie and Bentley, may also lose Rafael after Untied’s DGW. Any suggestions very welcome, not quite hapy with it atm…
