There was no love lost between the West London rivals as Craven Cottage played host to a most un-romantic evening of football.

The 0-0 stalemate surely handed Chelsea’s title dream a Dear John letter, as Carlo Ancelotti’s side, lining up with an unconvincing Fernando Torres in attack and Didier Drogba warming the bench, huffed and puffed but failed to blow down a determined Fulham. In the end Chelsea had Petr Cech’s to thank for salvaging a point with late spot-kick save from a Clint Dempsey 12-yard effort…

Carlo Ancelotti opted for what appeared to be a 4-3-2-1 formation, with Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka operating either side and tucked behind Fernando Torres at the spearhead. Didier Drogba was relegated to the bench then, while in midfield Ancelotti recalled Ramires with Mikel dropping out and Michael Essien given the job of protecting the back four. That defence saw a full debut for David Luiz who slotted in alongside John Terry; Branislav Ivanovic switched to right-back with Jose Bosingwa sidelined through injury.

The changes reflected the turbulence within the Chelsea squad. Ancelotti’s recent claims that the arrival of Luiz and Torres offered increased rotation options was confirmed by his decision to “rest” Drogba and shift Ivanovic back to full-back on the right – a position he made his own last season. Ancelotti was quick to justify his team selection in his post-match comments.

“I wanted to have control of the game in midfield by using Malouda and Anelka between the lines, and it was normal rotation because we have a lot of games coming and we want to maintain the players fresh. Drogba was a case of normal rotation as happened to Mikel and Kalou, and these players will play the next game.”

The situation up front is of particular interest – clearly, away from home playing both Drogba and Torres with Anelka or Malouda will be an issue. Monday’s team selection seems to suggest that Ancelotti will choose between Torres and Drogba away from home, but did suggest that this is subject to change…

“Maybe in the next game we will use both. I don’t know if Didier was happy, but every player knows every game is important. It doesn’t matter.”

Torres endured another miserable night in blue. Replaced by Drogba on 70 minutes, Ancelotti was again forced to defend the £50 million striker.

“Fernando played well. He needs time to play with us and, after one week, he was better. He used his ability to move. I substituted him just to use Didier’s freshness and power.”

We’re not quite sure that the “ability to move” is enough of a demonstration of his talent right now – Torres is looking low on confidence and seems very unlikely to tempt even a second glance from Fantasy Managers right now.

Elsewhere in the Chelsea squad we look to be limited when it comes to “untouchables” – Ancelotti has stated that John Terry is under threat, leaving just Petr Cech, Ashley Cole and perhaps Frank Lampard as those names set to be ever-present on the Chelsea teamsheet until the end of the season.

David Luiz could yet be an option at 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game. He enjoyed a strong debut, staying firm at the back alongside Terry and then at right-back later in the game. His evening was turned upside down by the late challenge on Dempsey that conceded the penalty, but Cech came to his rescue there and Luiz’s contribution, particularly in terms of his distribution of the ball, stood out.

Chelsea will of course face a blank fixture in Gameweek 28 should they get past Everton in their fourth round FA Cup replay this weekend. The midweek clash with Man United at Stamford Bridge will be postponed to make way for their fifth round tie – that prospect will temper any interest in their squad, regardless of rest and rotation issues.

In the Fulham camp, Mark Hughes made just one change to his lineup – drafting in Calos Salcido in the troublesome left-back area with John Pantsil dropping out of favour once again. Steven Sidwell enjoyed another encouraging game in central midfield, while Damien Duff was an influence on the flank. The Fulham back four also continue to win plaudits. This was a fifth clean sheet in the last 9 for Hughes’ side – they’ve conceded just 5 goals in that run. With favourable home fixtures to come against Blackburn, Blackpool and Bolton, their defensive assets are likely to earn some attention in the next week or so.

Clint Dempsey again lined up on the left of midfield but shifted up front late on with the introduction of Simon Davies. Dempsey’s miss from the spot-kick will have come as a blow to his Fantasy owners of course. He only assumed those duties because Danny Murphy was off the field at the time. The miss is unlikely to see the American regain the responsibility any time soon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well, UCL team done, almost, no Barcelona, not sure about that, but I don't like their midfielders for points, and I have chosen Ronaldo over Messi:

    Neuer/Szczesny
    Ivanovic/Smalling/Srna/Oddo/Bruno Saltor
    Sneijder/Nani/Walcott/VDV/Merkel
    Gomez/Ronaldo/Eto'o

    3.2 in the bank

Form of some of the players is formiddable. Gomez and Robben are scoring for fun, Messi is scoring for fun, Ronaldo is scoring for fun, Eto'o and Sneijder are scoring, Ibra is scoring, there are just too many options so it will be interesting to see how things go.

Gomez is the best value in the game, I got him for 7.5 odd and made a good bit on him, and he gets at least a goal a gane, it will seperate the men from the boys this round as there are loads of in form players, it's all about picking the fixtures you think some of them will score more in!

Oddo seems to have played the last 3-4 Milan games, but we may be able to confirm before the game tonight, he is just a bench warmer for me and cheap as chips.

Good team, but as I said earlier, there are so many of the big fish playing really well in Europe at the moment, in their respective leagues of course, it is important to play the fixtures rather than the players, because I think they will all score, it's picking the games with most goals is the tricky thing. Have a feeling for Robben and Gomez who are on fire in the Bundesliga.

I don't think I will be getting a Barcelona defender or mid for this round, just can't see clean sheets, and while Pique is a goal threat, I think these is better value in Vidic or Ramos for clean sheets and goal threat for Vidic anyway.

Good team bar Huntelaar in my view, Valencia are hard to score against, first game away, consider Eduardo for Shaktar if money is an issue?

Yeah but United didn't turn up on that day at all.

Barcelona are a ridiculously good team but they're prone to their bad days too. Also if the good Arsenal turn up then i fancy it to be a great game of football regardless of which Barca turn up.

Arsenal are much stronger now then they were last year when they played imo.

That Eto goal really knocked the stuffing out of Utd that day, as they'd started quite brightly. It was as if that just sucked the confidence, quite rare for a Fergie team.

Assuming Chelsea beat Everton at the w/e and they get a blank in GW28, anyone disagree with these moves?

GW28: Bosingwa -> Walker (after this I can only field 9 with no GK, Djourou, VDV, Fabs or RVP)

      GW29: Rafael & Adam -> Carr & Cahill (4 point hit)

If Everton win then should I change the plan and keep Bosingwa?

bah, another Newcastle cleanie would be one of those freak "Stephen Hunt DGW" type unexpected hauls, it happens every year, logically a team look like doing nothing, and then trump everyone's expectations like Wolves double last year, and Stoke double last year.

I did not like Four Lions at all, didn't find it funny or really clever, and was expecting so much more, another case of a British film being excellent because it's British.

Clever because the slapstick stuff at the start disarms you and makes you warm to them, then bang, its all got real and out of hand and youre stuck in the middle of it.

My squad likely to look as below in 2 weeks - is the defence acceptably weak? Could downgrade Wingie to someone like Hoilett for bench fodder and then use the 1.3m to improve my defence...thoughts appreciated. thanks

      Foster, Stockdale
      Kelly, Djourou, Coleman, Carr, Walker
VDV, Nani, Fabs, Cahill, A Young

Am I about to get trounced in this head to head?

      Left to play:

ME - Foster, VDV, Adam, Odem, RVP

HIM - Foster, Ridgewell, Huth, Brunt, Adam, Walcott, DJ and RVP

I'm also 7 points behind. Am I foolish in thinking I still have a chance?

Well it's your VDV (doubtful) and Odem vs his Ridgewell, Huth, Brunt, Walcott and DJ +7, if they all only play and don't score or keep clean sheets it's a minimum of 10 points for him, plus 7, is 17 for you to make up with 2 players (because your other players cancel each other out) - game over man.

50/1 on you winning that - VDV and Odem double figures required. It's basically:

        VDV & Odem (you)
        Vs
Ridgewell, Huth, Brunt, Walcott, DJ & 7 points (him)

        Good luck!

I should really know this already, but with Cahill being protected, is it 100% that he won't go up in value until his protection is removed? Also, any idea when this will be? I'm uber tight on funds for making my transfer - 0.1m rise would ruin EVERYTHING!!:)

I had the same dilemma and while I don't think he'll rise until maybe the backend of this gameweek, I couldn't take a risk as a 0.1 rise would screw my plans too. It will no doubt backfire and either him or someone else will get injured as has happended with nearly all other early transfers I've made this season!

Surprised most are arguing against bringing in a keeper for this week for a hit to replace Stockdale. If you choose someone with a home fixture most average over 4 pts per game with saves and then you have someone to bring in later if you need. Am I missing something?

Agree, as long as keeper you bring in doesn't concede heavy you should only be looking at max 2 point loss seeing as you'd have gained no points anyway and if if he gets a cleany you've gained a couple of points or more. It's a risk but a small one at that and with stockdale you're better to get him out now rather than later.

I think he has just totally misunderstood the poll question thinking that you can't select a captain if you don't have 11 players.

Crakers, because so many teams will be without a starting XI in GW28, the poll is asking who you may sell to give you 11 players. If this hasn't answered your question...well, I am as confused as everyone else :S

well applying that theory to FF id put this to you:

If we all had the same team you have no chance of winning the competition outright.

If we all have different teams you do have a chance of winning the competition outright.

Well imo you've got it all twisted.

If everyone had the same team you'd be joint first come the end of the season - if you went against the crowd by picking a differential despite wanting to stick with the other team - if as you thought the differential you picked scored less, what happens? You lose ground on everyone else.

You win the game by having the best team, so you pick what you think is the best team - if that happpens to include some players which everyone has - fine. If it happens to include some players which nobody has - fine.

Basically other peoples teams don't enter my thinking at all. The chances are that even if you have the same core set of players as someone else that you don't have the same 15 players overall. Differentials happen naturally, no need to go seeking them out - particularly if it ends up with you picking players you wouldn't have otherwise.

I disagree. However it depends on how you play this, if you aren't in minileagues then not worrying about differentials is fine.
However if you are in a minileague at this stage of the season it is crucial to know your rivals teams.
I honestly don't care whether I have the same side as everyone else on FFScout, but I do care if I have three or four different players to the lads (and lasses) above me in my main minileague.

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

I'm not disagreeing with your stance Atilla because i think it's reasonable.

I suppose some people on here think that having a team similar to everyone elses on here is inherintly bad, regardless of rank - which is rubbish.

I do think that differentials can be overstated though. If you're not sensible and get too caught up on it you end up cutting away your legs and losing ground by not getting the same high scoring players if there is good reason for you to be getting them but ignoring that for the sake of a differential - that's my point.

If it's about clawing back a lead that's fine, but you can do that while still have lots of players the same as your rival - and if you think they will score lots then it is in your interest to keep them.

Agree there. Much of the slagging on here about similar teams comes from the thousands of RMT's with nearly identical line-ups. Now people need to bear in mind two things

                      1) This site is only a small proportion of the players of FPL, thus what is familiar and standard on here does not equate to familiar and standard across the whole game

                      2) As you and Gargamel below say, points potential has to come first.

At this stage I have maybe four or five different players to the leaders of the minileague including the odd little manoeuvre such as doubling on defence. But I wouldn't get rid of RVP or Tevez etc just because the ones above me have them, otherwise I would get absolutely hammered.

                    Hello.

In general I actually think you're both right, but I think an important point here is that lots of players who are generally good at this game start worrying about differentials too early.

I'd hate for people to think I'm being patronizing so don't take this the wrong way, but when I look for a new player I try to estimate how many points they will give me, and if it's not late in the season I just go with the one that I think will give me the most points. In the end the one with the most points will have the best rank and for me that's the most important point.

When we're approaching gameweek 32 or so I start going with players my rivals don't have if they're ahead of me in an attempt to catch them, but unless I have to that's not the way I prefer to do it.

Agreed. You don't want to have the exact same team as your rivals, but to take out, say, Nani and RVP just because your rivals have them is likely to be shooting yourself in the foot.

I usually accept that my 'core' of 4 or 5 players is likely to be similar to my rivals (and most people who pay attention to the game), and hope that my fringe players can give me the points differential I need.

very true however you were just being pedantic and implying that everything is black and white so i just took your little quote and made the point that it isn't.

without seeing your ranking i cant comment on whether you should be looking for differentials or not. if you have ground to make up then having the same strikeforce as the majority of players won't help you do that

                    I'm ranked 212.

Again the point i'm trying to make is that what other people is doing is secondary.

My point is that doing something purely to go against the crowd is just as bad as doing something just because it goes with the crowd - a decision based on other people, not the individual merits of the players you're talking about. That should come first always, regardless of where you are in the league. imo

Now to really play devils advocate - maybe if you'd been making sensible decisions based on merit alone and not other people then you might not have a gap to close.

Not necessarily what i think or agree with, but it's food for collective thought.

              Jeremy Springer-esque.
I can't agree though, at this stage of the season you need to be looking at your rivals teams and picking a few good differentials to challenge them. No point in having near enough the same side if you need to close the gap.

The best option is always the one that score the most of course irrespective of price. In the cheapie bracket there are not so many options in form with good fixtures.
Saha in the mid range seems a nice punt.

Rooney is terrible value imo due to his position when Berbatov plays and his generally form for the money you pay. Berbatov should he keep playing centrally is an obvious pick for me.

Just need to decide when to get him. Either this coming week or for Tevez in 2 weeks

his PPG is the most important thing for me Tosey, if he costs that much, he must be a captaincy choice every week, the way he is blowing hot and cold means I can't trust him with captaincy, which means he is not worth it to me.

I would LOVE to have Roondog in my team every week, as a United fan and Wazzer lover, that being said, my love for the player has clouded my judgement on too many occassions and I think it is best to steer clear at the minute.

I have a question regarding protection - sorry if it's been asked before. My question is this:

In the case of a player like Odemwingie, who is quite clearly currently protected, can we be absolutely certain that his price will stay at its current 5.3 when his protection ends, or could it go up to 5.4 and start buliding again from 0%? Thanks.

The way I have understood it is that when protection ends it starts building again from 0%. But TotalFPL doesn't know when it ends and Odemwingie, for example, can already be out of protection and building at something like 40% eventhough it says 343% in TotalFPL. It's just that nobody knows when protection ends.

where does it say he is currently protected? All you know is that AT SOME POINT he was protected. He may be on 90% to a rise, or 20% - you will only be able to tell which if you know exactly when protection ended, and what his % was at that point.

Why only the last 7 games though? Rooney has played more minutes then Berba recently so he should have more points. I cant justify spending an extra 2 mil for a 10 point difference.

because thats one month after he returned from injury, its also around the same time he decided to sign a new contract at utd

his performances since then have been getting better

He's been shocking. He was one of the worst players on the pitch against City, he won't score a spectacular goal every week to mask over his below par performances.

i didnt see the wolves game but in the game before that against villa he played well

also played well away at west brom and birmingham at home

as said it seems like hes getting better and the players are getting behind him now (berbatovs comments about him being the best striker in the prem for example)

i just have a feeling hes going to go on a run now until the end of the season

Fergie said he was out for 2 weeks on the 11th of February, Smalling has played almost all of the Champions League games and did very well at the weekend, I fancy Smalling to get more pitch time as United have to be careful with Rio

A-Team is shocking: ** it starts off well, but the last hour is a complete mess and lesson in script and story making a film, don't get me starded on the set piece in the shipyard which is the biggest fail of CGI in modern blockbusting cinema.

If you have seen the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo then it is a foregone conclusion that you will want to check out the Girl that Played with Fire, inferior film to Dragon, but enjoyable all the same *** for me.

I wouldn't go near the A-Team I'm fed up of pointless crap re-hashing that tarnished the memories. So can;t comment on what I haven't seen.

Lads regarding UCl please choose 2 of 3 players

              Robben, Ribery, GOmez.

The down size that I don't see replacement for neither Gomez, neither Robben and Ribery has great value, he is so cheap IMO. So I am considering tripling. I see bayern going all the way. Good, bad thinking? To much gamble?

I can not stop my hunch about Robben. I see 2 goals and assist from him. We remember how Maicon was made funny by Bale, why not Robben.

Really really good hunch about him. Bugumark it if I decide not to have him in my squad.
