Just one Premier League game tonight (and the first of our doubles), but we’d thought we’d open the Dugout Discussion as it coincides with the return of European football. I’m guessing nothing less than a Birmingham City clean sheet will be warmly received on these parts, but hopefully an entertaining game in Italy will ease our pain if that doesn’t come to fruition.

The lineups from St. Andrews are in…

Birmingham XI: Foster, Carr, Johnson, Jiranek, Ridgewell, Larsson, Ferguson, Gardner, Bentley, Martins, Zigic

Newcastle XI: Harper, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Barton, Tiote, Nolan, Gutierrez, Lovenkrands, Best

So Obafemi Martins starts against his former club, and partners Nikola Zigic up front for the home side.

Elsewhere, Mario Balotelli returned for Man City as a substitute as they drew in Greece, and Rafael Van der Vaart makes a return to Spurs’ starting line-upin the San Siro.

Akers Richard or Akers, as he is known, has been regularly haunting this site since July 2008. He is young and foolish, take what he says with a pinch of salt. Follow them on Twitter

Millionaire Club safety score currently in 47. Looks like 316 in the FPL Open although it hasn't updated. Should be in the top 6 leagues when it does.

paulo di canio, class player. its all about the individual garg. do you want to make a life elsewhere, why dont you come to the U.K. to work ? Its no different for a football player, all the upheaval, moving house, dragging the wife with you, the kids etc. its not as easy as it sounds and if you already have a good paying job in your own country what is the need to move etc etc.

I didn't mean to insult anyone when I said that English players are not wanted by foreign clubs. I stand by my point though, I only ever see rumours about the very very best English players being wanted abroad, but Premier League clubs are sniffing around the Spanish academies for example to snap up every young Spaniard they can.

Not that everybody wants to move or so, absolutely not. Nothing wrong with liking what you already have. In fact I admire people who do that.

Lampard should have gone to Inter when they came calling last year. He bottled it. It would have improved him.

Re sniffing around the Spanish clubs, it's because they can sign professional contracts at an earlier age in England - it's how Utd got Pique and Rossi, Arsenal got Fabs etc.

But you're right, they are coached so much better in Spain (and France, and Holland, and Germany...) at a young age than here. I forget the exact figures, but Germany and Spain have something like 10 times as many qualified youth coaches than England.

You're going too much on the defensive here imo GREENDREAMS11.

The start of the English dominance coincided with when English clubs had made their money increase from the Premier League start count, and you got that great mixture of styles you have in England.

The Premier League for me is the best football in the world because of how the power and pace of the original English game has merged with the skill and strategy that has come from abroad.

The English dominance of European football actually started in the 70's. We won loads of trophies and 6 European cups in a row, and it was the Heysel tragedy that set English football back 10 years.

Yeah, I know. I wasn't born then but I've read all about it.

I was specifically talking about this latest era of English dominance. When my footballing interest was shaped in the 90s the Serie A was dominating to a ridiculous extent. It was the league people wanted to play in.

All the money in the English game doesn't go where it should do. A lack of investment in the provision of management and training programmes and the ridiculous money spent on the new Wembley which set back the Burton on Trent national football centre is scandalous.
We're able to pay our players extortionate wages higher on average than any other league because the clubs are able to keep too much of the TV money pot.

              I'm sad to hear that.

As a football fan first I like when the money that is made in the game is used to ensure the quality of the game in the future.

I hope the FA reacts though - the signs have been there for a number of years in the national team - because I would like for England to win a World Cup before I die.

possibly the difference is that a English League 1 player can still cost an english club £7- 10 million plus whereas the Spanish untried/untested equivalent could be as much as £4 - 5 million cheaper. Sniffing around in those markets is just common sense given the ridiculous prices of players in England. Celtic couldn't afford to buy Peterborough players a couple of seasons ago for that very reason. Its crazy that one of the biggest clubs in Scotland couldn't afford to buy a player from League 1 due to the transfer fees.,

but he's so expensive and hasn't been making returns. Sure he has good fixtures up, but he hasn't delivered for his price. I might just get coleman instead.

true, but the alternatives aren't better. Everyone other striker I think will score/look at is either hurt, off-form, a rotation risk or too expensive. Moreover, Gyan has the best fixtures after Man City. That said,

You Simpson owners, you lucked out, you Harper owners, you lucked out, you Newcastle defender owners in general, you lucked out. Against all odds they kept not one, but two clean sheets.

Bitter "Simpson is out on my WC because there is no way they even get one clean sheet in that DGW" rant over.

Gattuso went mental, actually mental. He started on Crouch, VDV and then for no apparent reason Joe Jordan, referee didn't take any action against him for any of this. He ended up only getting a yellow during the entire match (which was for about the only challenge he won all night) and when he got given the yellow had another hissy fit.

After the final whistle he decided to have another chat with Joe, and by chat I mean headbutt. What a prat. AC Milan were a disgrace tonight and if they play that terribly in the second leg it'll be 4/5 - 0 to us.

Short recap of game, 1-0 to us, fantastic counter attack involving a misplaced Ibra pass, good Modders pass to Lennon who went on a brilliant run before a pass across goal to Crouch to tap it in. Should have been more in all honesty, we should had a penalty to be honest. Also AC had a disallowed goal in the last minute after Ibra pushed Dawson over. Maybe a bit harsh but two wrongs make a right (result) in this case. For first 30 minutes of second half AC did attack better and we defended really well, some quality saves from Gomes. Corluka got chopped down by Flamini (again should have been red) and went off injured to be replaced by Woodgate (!).

Lennon terrorised them tonight and with Bale back for the second leg I think we could really do some damage to them

I backed Spurs months ago at 20/1 each way, thought it was great value.

The most important thing Spurs can do this year is to get in the top 4 and deny City that Champions League spot.

Yep going to be a really tough ask but Chelsea and City have made it seem more likely!

Just need to avoid slip ups in the "winnable games" and put in performances like that one against Chelsea, City, Arsenal etc

              Easy at that... Hmm.

Wasn't such a stupid decision to double up on the toon defence after all!! Makes even more sense when you consider that Harper has decent rotation with Begovic (and was all i could afford in my long term plan) and Simpson will hardly play.

You know if Lennon could cross consistently he'd be a brilliant player not just a decent one. He gets into so many good situations where he beats his man and then lets himself down with an overhit cross.
It's like his body is working too fast for his brain and when it comes to a little composure he just cannot do it.

Is he even a 'decent' player? 😛

He doesn't have a brain, let alone a footballing brain, so I can't see him ever not being a 'fast winger who can't cross or shoot for shit'.

If i had simply picked a decent captain ech week i would be winning it!

I have honestly had terrible luck with captains (except twice that i remember, last week with Tevez and that one time that Drogba came alive in the last 5mins of a game), but had good luck with my overall squad.

I even captained Piquionne one week...which was a disaster!!

its quite simple really, all the arsenal players need to grow a big set of balls, and be dirty little fuks, stamping on toes, nto caring when it happens to them, pinching arses, elbows, being smart about tackling, and generally making barcelone think they took rage amphetamines before the game. Im talking WACKOVILLE, TART DROOLING IN THEIR FACES WITH TEETH BEARED WHEN THEY START WHINGING BACK ABOUT TACKLES, SMACK THEMSELVES IN THE FACE AND HEAD, KICK THEIR OWN ANKLES AND SNOT ON THEIR OWN TONGUES, FRUNT LIKE PIGS AND SQUEAL LIKE WOUNDED WOMBATS..

And score goals. THEN, they will win.

Thatd be my team talk anyway

Watched Barca on the weekend and they were fairly poor, particularly by their standards. Absolutely no idea how tomorrows match will go, the first 5 minutes will be crucial to how the match pans out.
              Think i'll go for a 2-1 Arsenal.

I honestly have a good feeling about tomorrow. I think we are going to see a special performance from Arsenal and we are going to win by at least a few goals.

Problem with playing Barca, is that even with a 'special performance' from Arsenal, they could still end up losing. Do hope Arsenal don't let themselves tho.

I hope so. Don't have any beef with Arsenal or their fans, bar a very small vocal minority.
Fabs has to turn in one hell of a performance and show them what they are missing. I think you can do it.

We are in a better position then last season. Better defensively (Silvestre played that match) Van Persie will be key, we really missed him last season. And i know a lot of people don't rate Theo but he really does perform on European nights and is a lot better then last year.

Listen to what Messi and Guardiola had to say about Walcott. They cite him as the biggest danger.

Yeah i read that earlier today. I meant a lot of people on here don't rate him. Let's not forget, we have Bendtner waiting to explode off the bench 😉

I actually thought Bendtner did very well for ye in it last season, though obviously RVP is a different class. After a shaky start Song was one of your best players. Hopefully a Fabregas / Nasri combo can link up and retain the ball ala Xavi / Iniesta.
Hope ye don't start Arshavin, you just can't afford to lose possession so easily.
True, there's no Silvestre this time around, but i think Djourou will have a new one torn.

Yeah Song was class in the 1st leg. Nasri has been passed fit so i would guess he will start on the left to help track back with Song, Cesc & Wilshere as the middle 3. Massive game for Wilshere! Could be the making of him on the big stage.

You're right, I see that a lot with 'Wonderkids'. Still, it's great to see English football having bright prospects like him (and Wilshere, Walcott coming through sooner still)

Love the interview in your link by the way. Read that the other day and really enjoyed it. Xavi is a top bloke.

Clever chap that I am, I took Harper (12 points), Cahill (13 points), and Adam (8 points with a game left) out of my team when I used the wildcard.

Swapping Adam for Barton was sheer madness, 9 yellow cards or not.

CTC has him around 40% so it's been removed. What his real percentage is no-ones really knows. Atm you are 64th seed in the FPL Open. Very doubtful either of us will be in the 64 come GW29.
