After a turbulent season which has included the shock sacking of popular manager Chris Hughton and sale of star striker Andy Carroll, Newcastle finally seem to be giving their fans something to smile about. Since their remarkable comeback in the 4-4 draw with Arsenal, the Magpies have kept consecutive clean sheets in an impressive 2-0 away victory at Birmingham and a spirited goalless draw at Ewood Park.

After their heroics on the road, Alan Pardew’s men return to St. James Park for a run of three fixtures on home soil in their next four (BOL, EVE, stk, WOL). These games will surely be targeted as crucial matches which could cement their place in the Premier League next season; they are all certainly winnable.

This key combination of good form and attractive fixtures, in addition to the fact that Newcastle players generally boast low-to-mid valuations, screams potential for Fantasy Managers. And, if you’re looking for the form guy within Alan Pardew’s squad, you need look no further than Joey Barton.

In his last four gameweeks Barton has laid on more goal opportunities, had more shots on goal and enjoyed more touches of the ball than any other player in the Newcastle midfield. Our Members can see the stats behind Barton’s recent form for themselves in the Members’ Area – they make compelling evidence in Barton’s favour.

Another appealing aspect of investment in Barton is his involvement at set-plays. Again, over the last four gameweeks, Barton has contributed the most corners in the league; he is also the principal direct/indirect free-kick and spot-kick taker at the club.

Priced at 5.0 on the FPL game, Barton is a steal and would line-up nicely alongside some of the more lavish midfield offerings, and provide a ready-made replacement for those shedding Blackpool’s Charlie Adam in the light of his suspension. For a low price option, Barton has accumulated a notable return of 101 FPL points this season. This includes 17 bonus points, 4 goals and 6 assists.

Fellow Newcastle midfielders Kevin Nolan and Jonas Gutiérrez are also worth monitoring over Newcastle’s obliging run of opponents – they could easily rival Barton for FPL returns. Nolan has been Newcastle’s top points scoring midfielder, fetching 101 points thus far, having found the back of the net on 10 occasions. Like Barton, Gutiérrez has also been in strong form and his recent supply from out wide has been nothing short of superb. Again, our Members need only check out his Distribution stats, and in particular his “Successful Crosses” over recent gameweeks, to assess his current form.

Bolton could well provide a stubborn opponent for the Magpies this weekend having kept five clean sheets in their last six matches, but even beyond gameweek 28, it’s clear that there is great potential in Alan Pardew’s midfield, with Barton arguably the leading contender.

paddy sayspaddy says

Barton to score 2 or more goals against either Bolton or Everton combined 10/1

Barton to be sent off against either Bolton or Everton 10/1

Barton to score a hat-trick against either Bolton or Everton 80/1

    Lost the bottom of last page... Thoughts on bringing Arteta in over Barton?

    I have doubts with Arteta, even with his DGW, as he’s just getting very low single figure scores and seems to always assist the assist.

      I'm sure there was more than one.

      But i'm with you on the anti-Rooney sentiments.

      I find this game more fun when they players you want to do well (i.e. the ones in your team) are the ones you want to do well in real life too.

      That's why i like having a decent share of gooners in there, and why Rooney won't be coming near my team!

    What do you think of the following moves.

    Current team
    Hart al-habsi
    Johnson R Coleman Simpson Huth Djourou
    Brunt VDV Adam Nani Fabs
    RVP Berba Odem

    Changes
    Odem > Tevez
    Fabs > Young
    VDV > Barton

    This costs me 8 points but gives me a starting 11. Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

      To summarise...take a punt on Cahill or go for Arteta ready for DGW, but Arteta does not score points so consider Barton vs Nolan or Downing vs Young. You go for Barton or for Downing, then you ultimately choose Barton for the good run and value for money...

    Cahill doubt so change for plans - opinnions appreciated!

    evatt -> kolarov
    fab -> silva
    rvp -> rooney (-4)

    Only problems are that then I have, both berba and rooney, and I'm gonna lose 0.3 or 0.4 in rvp.....still, go for it?

      very bleak, she is exceptional in it though, and did you see her dress to the BAFTA's? Check it out, awesome cans.

      I watched Green Zone and Hidden for the first times the other night, Green Zone was a ***, meh, and Hidden was a ***, meh too, bit disappointing as Hidden (Juliette Binoche, Michael Henke) was so well received a few years ago at Cannes.

      I am going to watch one of my all time favourites JFK tonight, what a show, Stone at his peak!

        In fact, why did I buy Fellaini anyway? He has scored 1 goal this season, compared to Arteta on 3.

    Anyone going to try and put some of their rivals under a bit of a false sense of security by playing Foster in goal and 3 other players you know won't feature?

    I've done it once or twice before just to see the look on their face when the auto subs come in.

      Jesus, impressive ranking for all those hits you have taken! 52 and 20 on two different weeks throughout the season! Fook!

      I wouldn't bother with Bent where RVP is in form and you will want him back for Sunderland, a game I believe he will be involved with anyway. VDV and Adam OUT for Young and Barton, good moves. I would also look at Fabregas OUT Cahill IN this week too depending on how brave you are feeling, but 8 point hits mean nothing to you!

      Fabregas OUT and RVP staying in for the reasons outlined in my post above.

    Mind made up on an 8-12 point hit this weekend, for the following reasons:

    Fabregas OUT Barton IN (Fabregas gets 0 this weekend, misses 1 or 2 games according to Wenger and will be a doubt for Sunderland with Barcelona a few days after, plus, he is not in the form of his life and I lose nothing on him)

    Odemwingie OUT Rooney IN (-4 points, Rooney is hardly in sparkling form but has 2 games this week and I don't see Odemwingie doing much away, he has scored twice away from home all season, his form and his fixtures aren't great, so I am expecting a 2 point game for him this weekend away to a resolute Stoke defence)

    Walcott OUT Cahill IN (-4 points, depending on further news today and tomorrow morning, if he is not fit I won't do it until next week, if I do, Walcott is confirmed out for 2-3 weeks, and we all know how Wenger is when it comes to predicting players absences, it is rarely on the money, despite us getting regular updates from him, so that's 0 for Walcott this weekend, and 0 next weekend, compared to Cahill's 2-3 games in that period)

    Adam OUT Giggs IN (-4 points, this one will be a last minute decision, Adam is 0 for 2 games, and then he faces tough fixtures, Giggs has Wigan which doesn't guarantee high returns, and Chelsea, Giggs has been influential in all of the big games this season and I see no difference with the CHelsea game, but this is a punt)

    So, looking at at least a 4 this week, if not maybe an 8 or 12 point hit depending on balls and injuries!

      Don't think there'll be any more news on Cahill. I've put a line through that one and will look elsewhere (maybe back to Silva and his low scores 🙠).

        Just not convinced by anyone in the City midfield MnL, love Silva, but just don't fancy him for big returns, plus, Fulham are a tough side to break down and overload the midfield, with Dzeko finally hinting at some form, it may be a classic 4-4-2, and Silva may not be as far forward, even if he is, I just don't think 8.5 is worth the return he usually provides

        A goal and 4 assists all season hardly make him jump out, added to that is that Fergie has options in CM, whereas he doesn't wide, and Giggs is the set piece specialist, Giggs is more likely to get more pitch time for DGW than Scholes, as a United fan, funnily enough I have NEVER had Giggs or Scholes in my team, too unpredictable, thinking of a punt on Giggs this time around though, he has really pulled through for us again this season at times, and that translates to FPL returns, whereas with Scholes, he is another classic assister of assisters, spraying the ball to the corners to the wing backs, who in turn cross for the assist.

      Thanks for your convincing argument, for now im on board with taking a 4 or 8 pt hit....besides at this point in the season as long as your rival is taking a hit or two its totally worth it!

    People said don't get in Berbatov for this DGW because of poor away form and there seems to be more support for Rooney.

    Looking backwards, their away record for points is:

    Rooney: 1, 2, 1, 12, 2 and some blanks

    Berbatov: 2, 12, 2, 2, 1, 8.

    Slight advantage to Berbs and cheaper. Better to get 2 possible games for Berba this week than a definite 0 from RVP for my 4 points. So I rest RVP, while his price will almost certainly drop at least once, letting me buy back with little or no loss.
