According to reports today, Andy Carroll is all set to make his Liverpool debut against Manchester United on Sunday. The £35 million record signing has been injured since joining the club and, after slumping to an unconvincing Premier League defeat to West Ham, manager Kenny Dalglish will been keen for Fernando Torres’s long-term replacement to make his long awaited debut.

After being sidelined since the end of December it would be surprising if Carroll started the game. However, given the fact that Manchester United are missing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Carroll’s presence could be the perfect weapon to capitalise on an untested central defensive partnership of Chris Smalling and Wes Brown on Sunday.

As for the longer-term Liverpool line-up, Carroll’s introduction to the fold means a likely shift to accommodate the big striker. Dirk Kuyt has recently been used as a target man, seemingly filling the void until Carroll’s debut, and although the Dutchman played this role earlier in his career, it is not his most accomplished position. Kuyt will surely make way and switch back to midfield, with Carroll becoming the primary forward. Luis Suarez, who has shown glimpses of his skill and technique since arriving from Ajax, seems likely play just off Carroll as a second striker, coming deep to influence matters as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez have demonstrated for United and City this season.

Dalglish has experimented with formations since taking the reins in January. The Anfield legend has trialled 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2 systems, amongst others. It is unclear which approach the manager will opt for with Carroll’s arrival, but it should be expected that Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles will play deeper midfield roles; that would obviously hamper the potential of the Portuguese playmaker.

It will be interesting to see who Dalglish drops to the bench. With Gerrard practically untouchable, one of Kuyt or Lucas Leiva could face the chop. The Liverpool boss could even bench the in-form Meireles. His 5 goals in his last 7 games should guarantee a starting berth in the short-term, although having suffered an injury at Upton Park, he will go into Sunday’s game as a doubt.

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures hardly offer Carroll an easy opening to his Anfield career (MUN, sun, wba, MCY, ars, BIR). As well as the ever-feisty affair with Manchester United, Dalglish’s men must also face tricky encounters with Manchester City and Arsenal. But, regardless, Carroll’s Fantasy Premier League owners (and there’s still 21.8% of you out there) will be thrilled that he is close to a return. Despite retaining decent ownership, Carroll’s price in the FPL has dropped from a peak of 6.4 to 5.8.

We must of course wait for more “official” news on Carroll’s return to action. Dalglish is set to call a press conference tomorrow morning (Thursday 9.30 am) where more may well be revealed. Should he confirm Carroll’s return, the big number nine will surely come back onto our radars as a possible replacement for the stricken Robin Van Persie.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

    Goals earlier in the season against Villa/Liverpool/Chelsea/Arsenal indicate that we shouldn't be too worried about his fixtures, particularly with Suarez buzzing around at his heels, if he is fit this weekend, or plays some part, he will be straight in my team next week.

      Liverpool really should play the formation that Ajax played with Suarez, 4-3-3. With Carroll through the middle & Suarez & Kuijt/Cole either side they should do very well.

          The only worry there would be that it would end up looking like a 5-4-1 with Suarez & Kuijt having to drop back to help the 2 mids. They are both hard working players but I wouldn't want them to spend much time tracking back.

    Rafael -> Luiz
    Berbatov -> Rooney
    RVP -> Zigic

    I'm loathe to take an 8pt hit... 4pt is ok though. Team is linked, pick 2 of these 3 transfers. I'm thinking my defence is ok so I can wait a week on Rafael to Luiz, but I think CHE have a good chance of a CS this week...

      B: Mostly

      Although Coleman was said to be heading for the bench after the bolton game and didnt occur...
      IMHO Moyes has a hard-on for Colemaan not justified by Colemans actual performances, so he must see big potential - i expect him to stay in the XI.

    It's a real ball ache that the best/most reliable in points and starting players for teams with good fixtures coming up are all midfielders and their question marks on the strikers:

    Arsenal: Nasri / Chamahk & Bendy both poor and unsure who will start
    Villa: Young & Downing / Bent no pens and not setting the world alight at the mo
    Chelsea: Lamps / Drogba Anelka & Torres great on their day but who knows who will start from week to week.
    Spurs: VdV / Strikers not worth mentioning
    Everton: Arteta (risky I know) / Beckford is cack and Saha made of glass

      Nasri has FA Cup (probably) and Champions League on his plate, both are on pens (Nasri just this week maybe), if there was a time for Arteta to step up to the plate it would be now, with DGW alone this week, and where you are settled on one or the other, I would say Arteta.

      I also think Arsenal will do their usual stutter job this weekend, Sunderland will go there with a bit of belief that it is a good time to meet Arsenal, 1-0 to Arsenal I say, Bendy!

          well, with that new information I would hold off then Daniel, if I have been burned by a player, Arshavin & Defoe circa 2009-2010 season I am looking at you two, I tend to not go for them again. I am reluctant to primp for Arteta myself, but as I said earlier,they haven't been awarded a penalty in an age, and it really is time to see if Arteta is made of the right stuff, we thought so for the last few seasons, and Everton need him more than ever.

            I will throw a coin at the end, but I always prefer lad who has possibility to explode and when I brought Nasri in his first game for my team he got me 15pts and I don't care how many points will Arteta get I can not stand him in my team. Not again.

            Plus I don't have Arsenal player and already have one form Everton. I would prefer Baines but I can not find a place for him.

    Something to bear in mind if your considering LAMPARD.

    Since Lampard came back from injury, he got 3 goals (all penalties though) and only 1 assist.and 5 bonus.

    Lets face it, we'l all want Adam and VDV back in a few weeks.
    Add that to must-have Nani and one of Fabs/Nasri/Walcott, and a cheap 5.0m midfielder like Barton/Parker, and ask yourself do you really have room for Lampard, can you afford him considering all of the other players and is he worth it?

    Not to mention other possibles like Merieles/Dempsey/Young/Arteta

    In my opinion NO is the answer.

    Bringing him in for Blackpool will mean you'll only want to get rid of him again soon when VDV/Adam/Walcott come back. Better to wait for his double in GW33 in my opinion.

    Caution advised when spending 12.7m.

    Easy decision to get rid of both Kelly and Cahill, and Odemwingie has been a bag of dirt recently (he does have potential I always say, but in fantasy terms, if you aren't bagging something week in week out, you can do better!):

    Kelly OUT Luiz IN - Yes

    Odemwingie OUT - Yes, to who? not sure if Zigic is the man you want, yes he has 2 doubles BUT will you want Carroll when he is back, which could be as soon as this weekend, and if you will, it will be for Zigic, so hardly a medium term move.

    Cahill OUT Arteta IN would be my choice over Nasri, as I said above, I believe Arsenal will stutter and splutter this weekend, and make hard work of putting a tough Sunderland team away.

      Played well? I thought he was relatively anonymous and was surprised he got BP's bar smashing a penalty into the roof of the net, I am tempted by him though, with so much uncertainty around Chelsea's best team and formation at the minute though I am not sure if I will gamble until I see where Frank fits into that.

    Would appreciate thoughts on my dilemma..

    1. Cahill out for Arteta (free)
    2. Cahill out for Nasri (free)
    3. Bent and Cahill OUT for Carroll and Lampard

    Think I'll end up going for 1, but 3 is definitely tempting me. Want to get on Lamps before he gets any possible big haul, rather than after the event. Not keen on losing Bent but my other strikers are Rooney and Tevez, and I do have Walker and Young covering Villa... hmm.

        The only other way to Lampard would be VDV and Cahill out for Lampard and 5.7 midfielder. Already have Barton.. not sure there's anyone else in that price range I'd consider - any suggestions?

      Tough one, I would prefer 1, but am looking at 3 myself, just not this weekend for Carroll (depends on the news)

      Bent is not worth it at the moment though, he was golden when was a goal a game type player, but he is finding it hard to settle into the Villa goall scoring groove, I would get rid, not sure to who though, this week we are all relatively stumped so I am beginning to get a bit reluctant to try and chip in with opinion!

        Yeah I would only really consider Carroll as a cheap Bent replacement I think.. not tempted by Zigic or Beckford. If Carroll is fit I may just take the plunge. If not, I'll wait on Lampard aswell probably.

    Current team:

    Foster - Al Habsi
    Kolarov - Huth - Coleman - Rafael - Djourou
    Nani - Van der Vaart - Meireles - Downing - Barton
    Tevez - Berbatov - Van Persie

    There's quite a few changes I'd like to make, but don't want to take more than a 4pt hit. I have 1 free transfer this week but am willing to take a 4pt hit.

    A. Rafael -> Luiz
    B. Meireles -> Nasri
    C. Berbatov -> Rooney
    D. Van Persie -> Zigic

    Pick TWO!

    Currently thinking C & D. After Zigic's DGW I can always go for another similarly priced option - Carroll, Sturridge, Ba, etc. Think my defence and midfield, while not brilliant, have enough coverage to be left for this week...

    Don't usually ask for advice as i'm usually quite competent at this game.. but this week i'm truely stumped.

    With Fabregas doubtful , Cahill out, RVP out, Berbatov unlikely to reap any points.. I just can't see any other attractive prospects.

    am I right in thinking i'm just gonna have to sit tight? have a look at my team- a lot of people probably in the same boat :[

            I'm in the same boat, but, at this stage will the loss in money really matter? I don't think so. Plus, he'll no doubt drop 0.2 so you'll only end up losing out on 0.2 or so. Surely worth it to have a viable player...

                I have had a relatively good year and one thing what i have definitely learnt is that price differences of anything less than 0.3 really does not matter. It is way overrated. I have had an average of 2 to 3 in the bank throughout the year. So dont sweat on rvp. Transfer him out and if you feel like you want him after 3gw i am sure you will have the funds.
