Reading’s surprise 1-0 FA Cup win at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening gave the green light to yet another double gameweek, with Everton now facing two league games in the next seven days. Having beaten holders Chelsea in the previous round, David Moyes’ side were odds-on favourites to progress, but a thoroughly downbeat Toffees boss admitted post-match:

”We let the supporters down, we didn’t play well enough and we got what we deserved. We had to chase the game and got more desperate as the game went on and we didn’t have enough to open them up. “

Moyes will be looking for a big response from his side, then, as they travel to St James’ Park this Saturday afternoon before facing Carling Cup holders Birmingham City at Goodison next Wednesday evening.

The Prospects

Everton’s 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend will no doubt have Fantasy Managers mulling over defensive options but it’s really only papered over the cracks of their defensive fragility; they have chalked up just two clean sheets in their last seventeen league games, Sunderland match inclusive. Before the game with Steve Bruce’s side, Everton had played seven league matches since the turn of the year and conceded two or more goals in six of them.

Despite a poor showing this season, the competitive nature of the Premier League means Everton’s season still hangs in the balance; a win at Newcastle would leave them just three points behind sixth-placed Merseyside rivals Liverpool but, on the other hand, Moyes’ side sit just five points above the drop zone. As Arsenal recently discovered, winning at St James’ Park is not at all straightforward and Alan Pardew has suffered just one loss in the last nine league games as Newcastle boss. Everton have only averaged one goal per game away from home, too.

Birmingham approach their own double gameweek just two points off the drop zone, albeit with two games in hand over their relegation rivals. With the Carling Cup win under their belt, Alex McLeish’s side will be fired up for the Goodison visit and will be looking to replicate the form that has seen them win two of their last three on the road. Despite their poor FA Cup showing, Everton have been in good scoring form at home of late, netting two or more goals in each of their last four home league games.

The Likely Lads

The number of assists Leighton Baines racks up negates his lack of clean sheets; the left-back has managed nine already this season, the sixth highest total in the league. Put into perspective, the second highest number of assists by a defender is four. Factor his set-piece duties into the equation, and it’s no real surprise that Baines is the fourth highest-scoring defender in FPL to date.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has allowed the young Irishman to garner attacking points (3 goals, 3 assists) which, like Baines, means he hasn‘t suffered too badly from the minimal defensive returns. The fact that he’s over £2m cheaper than Baines sees Coleman with the higher ownership of the two. Having been hauled off on 45 minutes of the Reading Cup tie however, there is a nagging doubt that Coleman will start in both of Everton’s two fixtures – he is certainly overdue a rest.

In light of injuries to Marouanne Fellaini and Tim Cahill, the onus is firmly on Mikel Arteta to step up and be counted, following a disappointing season for the Spaniard; although he’s missed just four league games this season, Arteta has picked up just 81 FPL points. Despite this, plenty investment will surely follow, with Fantasy Managers pinning their hopes on the playmaker’s shoulders.

There’s no doubting the quality of Louis Saha -he’s grabbed six goals in his last five league games- but the Frenchman’s inability to steer clear makes him an infuriating Fantasy Option. Following a slow start to his career on Merseyside, Jermaine Beckford has started to show a consistency in the top-flight (he’s scored four in his last five league games) and priced at just £5.0m, could be a real bargain if he continues his recent form. We just have to hope that the traffic doesn’t hold him up.

Cheeky Punts

Victor Anichebe’s return from injury gives Everton a couple of options; he can provide competition for Seamus Coleman for that right midfield slot but, alternatively, injuries to Everton’s attacking options may see Anichebe find some time up front. Everton lined up in a 4-5-1 for the Reading game but Moyes has been fielding 4-4-2 lately, and if either Saha or Beckford (or both) miss either (or both) of the upcoming games, he could be the beneficiary.

If Moyes’ front two are fit and available, however, Jack Rodwell could also be an alternative choice; with the Toffees central midfield so depleted at present, there’s every likelihood he’ll take part in both games and offer potential low the price bracket. Leon Osman is another risky temptation – he fired in more efforts on goal than any of Everton’s midfield against Sunderland and set up three goalscoring efforts for team-mates.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

No form. None. People can say he was 'dangerous' or 'had a great first 10 minutes,' but the guy has shown no sign of form at all. Right now he is the third best striker and the fifth best offensive threat on the team.

I just cannot decide who to go for out of Lampard, Nasri or Arteta as my Cesc replacement.

Arteta is bottom of the pile, but you can't argue with two games and 4 points guaranteed. If he comes away with less than 7/8 or so I'll be very, very shocked. But I don't really want him after the DGW, just doesn't seem to be that good a fantasy player this year.

Lampard was horrible deep against United. He got forward a bit and scored the penalty, but I reckon his chalkboards (I haven't checked, maybe RBJ would oblige?) would indicate him playing very central and quite deep. However, Blackpool could well be the type of game where he ends up pouring forward. After that though, no that interested. City won't be a walk in the park. Pens and him being the only nailed on started is tempting, though. Also, he can go out for Cesc as soon as Cesc is back, which is a luxury I would dearly like to have.

Nasri seems to clever option - he's going to be there main creative force this week (maybe next, too) and I have terrible memories of when Cesc was out and my rivals had him as he ran the show and racked up points.

Really, really is a tough one.
Decided to go for Saha as my RVP replacement. Zigic is a good bet, but I can't help but think he's got the potential for a string of 2's a la Elmander. Saha could get crocked, but I'm willing to take the chance. He's a fantastic player when he's fit, easily has the potential to score a hatload.

Keep in mind, yes, the Man city game is rough, but Then chelsea has sweet fixtures, including the best double in week 33.

I am also very scared about missing a Nasri haul (see above) but I think Frank is going to be a good guy to have the next 6 weeks, and I'm not sure I can say that for Naz.

      Eliminate Arteta as a possibility.

Anyone got any further news on VDV?? I reckon i'm gonna bring Lampard in this week. Its around this time last year, and i was chasing, that my season effectively ended when Lampard scored those 4 goals. This year i am leading by a healthy margin and i'm looking to finish this off sooner rather than later.

    Could this be the week.

    Team will be:

    Foster
    Coleman, Djourou, Kolarov
    Nasri, VDV, Lampard, Nani, Dempsey
    Rooney, Tevez

    Lamps debate my view.

    1. No other midfield options in Che team. Malouda not in form, rotation threat, not worth the money IMO. U need starter for that much money. Essien is not playing well and is more defensive with Ramires now in the picture. Ramires fantasy option, who are we kidding..???

    2. He is expensive. YEs he is, but do we need the cash? Upfront, Tevez and Rooney, there is no other expensive forward appealing at the moment. RVP injured, Torres out of form, he needs time, Berba bench folder, Bent in 4:0 he didn't score - off penalty duties, Gabby or Defoe I don't even need to write about them.

    3. Other midfield option. Fabs injured, Gerrard who..? Nani everybody has him and a lot of mid price midfielders that are doing the job. Expensive defense, yeah right. So cash we have. I even suggest to have Adam and O hara till the end in order to have the cash.

    4. Fixtures. See them no need of arguments and we all remember the finish of last season. Very low ownership and especially if u r chasing he is the way to go.

5.And most important rule for fantasy football that I've leaned in the past: There is no such thing as expensive captain. I already have him and I bought him against Utd, because I had hunch but it is not to late for him IMO.

    Cheers,

I'm not sold on Lampard. He was outstanding last season, but not this season; there is no room for nostalgia. He is a 12.7m punt...IMO. The odd 0.5m hit on selling RVP does not hurt. But, to tie up 12.7m must restrict flexibility in buying other players and ultimately balance.

IMHO it is right to consider a Chelski play, they have a good run and this can be achieved through Luiz or Ivanovic and is Malouda any less a punt.

my most recent tiff with protection was when Odemthighstrain was protected as copious amounts of people brought him in for the double, alas he never rose in price, just dangled there at 250% teasing me. then early this week while protected he drops in price, love it.

however, I did ctach the recent Nasri jump whilst under protection

Not a gunner but yes, I would wager a lot of money that he will. Koscielny and Squillaci have been very poor, Djourou's looked accomplished, and he was even rested last night. He's definitely made the step up from second string defender to first team regular, IMO.

lol. i wish he'd just fu.ck off. he was decent in 2007 n has been no where good enough since. but he's not a tosser n won't moan about being on the bench so that's prob ok for the squad anyways.

we'd kill to have some of your mids chill pill!

Ok thnkng of ths transfer for a 4 point hit

    Barton>Lampard
    RVP>Saha

Have anthr transfer in mind that is of
    Wingie>zigic
(but that would be an 8 point hit)

    Team would be
    Foster
    Kolarov Huth Coleman Djouru
    Lampard Downing Nani
    Tevez Saha Wingie\zigic

    Subs--- Vds Vdv Ohara Evaat

If vdv is fit enough to play then would put vdv in the line up and bench huth

    Opinions-
1)Should i take an extra hit and bring zigic for wingie or just sit back and watch wingie getting 1 point
2)if vdv isnt fit enough then is there ne necessity to bring nasri in place of him...although i may want vdv soon though

Wait as late as possible for news on VDV. If he's fit, I'd play him ahead of Odem, and not bother with Zigic.

If VDV is out, I'd rather take the opportunity to get rid of Odem for Zigic, than take out VDV and lose money and a transfer when you want him back.

I hate bandwagons; a.k.a frank lampard. All it needs is a few people to say 'he could be a useful differential this week' and suddenly the whole site wants him. 'How do I get lampard in my team', 'is he really worth the money', 'don't know whether I can afford lampard', 'who's better A:lampard B:someother bandwagon'.

Anyone else think it's funny to watch it unfold?! 😛

Boselli was a bandwagon. Lampard is a legitimate answer to the fact that a lot of people have a LOT of money, and a lot of injured players (midfielders).

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty much 100% certain of putting him in, I just find it funny how it catches on so quick. Take arteta last week for example.

The whole site? It's about bringing options to peoples attention, if they just blindly follow then that's their problem. There have been plenty of 'bandwagons' that have passed me by without any interest at all. But Lampard? He is tried and tested and a cert to go into the FPL Hall of Fame when he hangs up his boots

I agree Super Dunny. The thing is though alot of people do just that; 'blindly follow them' and never really stop to think themselves whether he will be a good option or not. And yes he will be going in my team this week.

Got him in my CL team coz of weak opposition, safe spot and PKs.
