Reading’s surprise 1-0 FA Cup win at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening gave the green light to yet another double gameweek, with Everton now facing two league games in the next seven days. Having beaten holders Chelsea in the previous round, David Moyes’ side were odds-on favourites to progress, but a thoroughly downbeat Toffees boss admitted post-match:

”We let the supporters down, we didn’t play well enough and we got what we deserved. We had to chase the game and got more desperate as the game went on and we didn’t have enough to open them up. “

Moyes will be looking for a big response from his side, then, as they travel to St James’ Park this Saturday afternoon before facing Carling Cup holders Birmingham City at Goodison next Wednesday evening.

The Prospects

Everton’s 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend will no doubt have Fantasy Managers mulling over defensive options but it’s really only papered over the cracks of their defensive fragility; they have chalked up just two clean sheets in their last seventeen league games, Sunderland match inclusive. Before the game with Steve Bruce’s side, Everton had played seven league matches since the turn of the year and conceded two or more goals in six of them.

Despite a poor showing this season, the competitive nature of the Premier League means Everton’s season still hangs in the balance; a win at Newcastle would leave them just three points behind sixth-placed Merseyside rivals Liverpool but, on the other hand, Moyes’ side sit just five points above the drop zone. As Arsenal recently discovered, winning at St James’ Park is not at all straightforward and Alan Pardew has suffered just one loss in the last nine league games as Newcastle boss. Everton have only averaged one goal per game away from home, too.

Birmingham approach their own double gameweek just two points off the drop zone, albeit with two games in hand over their relegation rivals. With the Carling Cup win under their belt, Alex McLeish’s side will be fired up for the Goodison visit and will be looking to replicate the form that has seen them win two of their last three on the road. Despite their poor FA Cup showing, Everton have been in good scoring form at home of late, netting two or more goals in each of their last four home league games.

The Likely Lads

The number of assists Leighton Baines racks up negates his lack of clean sheets; the left-back has managed nine already this season, the sixth highest total in the league. Put into perspective, the second highest number of assists by a defender is four. Factor his set-piece duties into the equation, and it’s no real surprise that Baines is the fourth highest-scoring defender in FPL to date.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has allowed the young Irishman to garner attacking points (3 goals, 3 assists) which, like Baines, means he hasn‘t suffered too badly from the minimal defensive returns. The fact that he’s over £2m cheaper than Baines sees Coleman with the higher ownership of the two. Having been hauled off on 45 minutes of the Reading Cup tie however, there is a nagging doubt that Coleman will start in both of Everton’s two fixtures – he is certainly overdue a rest.

In light of injuries to Marouanne Fellaini and Tim Cahill, the onus is firmly on Mikel Arteta to step up and be counted, following a disappointing season for the Spaniard; although he’s missed just four league games this season, Arteta has picked up just 81 FPL points. Despite this, plenty investment will surely follow, with Fantasy Managers pinning their hopes on the playmaker’s shoulders.

There’s no doubting the quality of Louis Saha -he’s grabbed six goals in his last five league games- but the Frenchman’s inability to steer clear makes him an infuriating Fantasy Option. Following a slow start to his career on Merseyside, Jermaine Beckford has started to show a consistency in the top-flight (he’s scored four in his last five league games) and priced at just £5.0m, could be a real bargain if he continues his recent form. We just have to hope that the traffic doesn’t hold him up.

Cheeky Punts

Victor Anichebe’s return from injury gives Everton a couple of options; he can provide competition for Seamus Coleman for that right midfield slot but, alternatively, injuries to Everton’s attacking options may see Anichebe find some time up front. Everton lined up in a 4-5-1 for the Reading game but Moyes has been fielding 4-4-2 lately, and if either Saha or Beckford (or both) miss either (or both) of the upcoming games, he could be the beneficiary.

If Moyes’ front two are fit and available, however, Jack Rodwell could also be an alternative choice; with the Toffees central midfield so depleted at present, there’s every likelihood he’ll take part in both games and offer potential low the price bracket. Leon Osman is another risky temptation – he fired in more efforts on goal than any of Everton’s midfield against Sunderland and set up three goalscoring efforts for team-mates.

    Hi guys,

    My current team is as below;

    Foster (Robinson)
    Coleman Kolarov Huth (Walker, Kelly)
    Arteta Nani Dempsey Silva (O'Hara)
    Tevez Bent Rooney

I'm considering Bent -> Saha this week, then Silva -> A. Young next week. Does that sound like a good plan or are there other areas I should concentrate on?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Cahill needs to go for a hit. But who?

    a) Lamps
    b) Nasri
    c) Arteta
    d) A Young
    e) He doesnt need to go for a hit. Just play Huth and hope Barton/R Johnson also play

      Repost (by request)

And now the fun begins. Fantasy cup opponent is posted and I gotta say I feel quite lucky with the draw. Opponent ranked 64,500 overall and has plenty of issues with his squad. hes already made 2 transfers for a 4 point hit. before the moves his squad is:

      VDS (Pollitt?)

      Coleman, Hangeland, Evatt (xVidicx, xHalfordx)

Nani, A Young, Nolan (xAdamx, xWalcottx)

      Tevez, Bent, Taylor Fletcher(inj?)

      vs me:

      Szczesny

      Coleman, Huth, Carr, Simpson

      Nani, Nasri, VDV

      Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov

      (Cahill, Adam, Kelly) no hits

I should feel excited about making the final 512?

looking at his squad and knowing hes spent 4 points already, i will probably go cahill->arteta for -4. Is there a better move? .8 in bank, Cahill or adam to drop. doing kelly>walker next GW probably.

cheers, may be a while before i get rid of one of my united forwards, definitely cant afford to get rid of an available player for a hit when im currently stuck with an empty bench. i just have a hunch my cup opponent brought arteta in, and if he captains him and arteta has a 2 game form that resembled his ability last year, that would be the only transfer that could hand me a defeat. evertons fixtures are nice for a few weeks too. but thats just me trying to convince myself to ignore how generally poor arteta has been this season.

      Coleman, Djourou, Johnson, Baines, Hangeland
      Downing, Merieles, Nani, Barton (Adam)
      Tevez (RVP, Berbs)

yes, why are you changing your def's when you possibly have 3 who are ok for the weekend (johnson & coleman - d g/w's) and hangeland at home to blackburn, your problems are m/f and up front. as you say, no conf'n on johnson as yet but just take it as could be ok.
m/f barton & adam are deff out as is van persie, thats where you really should be looking to make changes.

      Anyone doing WC this week?

Have 4 reds (RVP,Walcott,Kelly,Cahill) & 2 doubts (r.Johnson,Barton) so now very tempted. Wanted to save for GW32/33 but maybe its better to use now?

Otherwise team this week would be (done RVP>Zigic for free already):

      Foster (Beg)
      R.Johnson,Coleman,Kolorov,Huth (Kelly)
      Nani,Barton,A.Young(Walcott,Cahill)

i would be tempted to WC. in GW 33 chelsea is the only team with great fixtures, but you can gradually bring in VDV, maybe now if declared fit, for spurs coverage, nasri for arsenal, id probably bring in lamps cause hed be the hardest to squeeze in down the road. so you can WC with GW33 in mind, just plan transfers between now and then carefully.

GW33 could be very different by the time it comes around - Chelsea won't get their double if Birmingham beat Bolton in the Cup QF. Man C, Sunderland may be without a fixture.

Not to say you shouldn't plan transfers carefully - but be mindful.

Not a bad time to wildcard really since you have so many reds. Also it allows you to put in Saha for Odem to be totally covered up front for the dgw.

most GWs my response would be "meh". But that cant be good news for people bringing in zigic, bentley, etc. i was thinking about ferguson in, playing him his 2 DGWs and freeing up cash for lamps but that plan is scratched, maybe for the better.

        Thanks for the news

Time to take a punt..he who dares wins, Rodney!

I reckon Bendtner will score more points in 1 game than Zigic does in 2 games.

      Definite transfers:

      Cahill–> Nasri
      RVP –> Zigic

I’m tempted to also do Berbatov –> Rooney because I don’t think Berbs will play.

It’ll be an 8pt hit again though (2nd week on the trot) leaving me with:

      Foster
      Kolarov Coleman RJohnson (Huth, Kelly)
      Nasri Young Nani Barton (Walcott)
      Zigic Tevez(c) Rooney

If both RJohnson and Barton don’t end up playing I’ll be back down to 10 men…

      Worth taking the hit??

I've done the same thing - it may or may not be a good idea.

        Cahill > Nasri
        Odemwingie > Zigic
        RVP > Rooney

        Sir Chesney

        Carr Walker Coleman Kolarov

        Nasri Nani Young

        Rooney Zigic Tevez

        Begovic, Barton, Adam, Kelly.

Not great, but at least it's eleven starters.

Is Nasri really essential now? Almost everyone here is getting him in. Yep, Arsenal has great fixtures, BUT Fabregas will be back for West Brom game. And when Fabs is playing, Nasri wont get big points.

This is my current midfield: Lennon, Young, Yaya, Nolan, Nani
Do you recommend me to make some changes?

maybe statistics will prove me wrong but it seems games where RVP is healthy and perhaps walcott as well, has been where nasris production has wavered. nasri has had some good returns with cesc involved.

        cup hangover

        key players out

they average less than one goal a game, even at home

poor option in GWs w/o doubles

a few reasons why zigic is not attractive in my view.

Everton have no FA Cup fixture after the Brum game so Saha will have 10+ days to recover for Fulham.. I am worried about him starting the 2nd game vs Birmingham as he just playing 90 vs reading 4 days ago

      FOSTER (Bergovic)
      COLEMAN Huth Simpson (Rafael, Kelly)
      Nani Fab Barton Brunt (Adam)
      Tevez(C) RVP Berbatov

      Thinking

      4 point hit taken already.

Almost certainly going to take an 8 pointer to replace RVP.

RVP out has to happen. His price will fall, and he'll probably not be fit until GW 34 or something. Don't know who to replace him with though. Sturridge is calling, Gyan maybe when his fixtures get better. Saha maybe. But his injury record is just frightening. Balotelli perhaps for this week.

      Probably Sturridge at this point.

      Tosey, you there?

Cheers for the heads up re: Direct Ferries! I emailed the guy and I'm still able to claim the December MoTM prize; up to £500.00 worth of ferry tickets. Nice.

All I need now is to decide where and when to go and who to take!

      Cheers bud.

Focusing specifically on Luiz’s unpunished foul on Rooney, Sir Alex said: “It was incredible. Even before that he’d done Chicharito off the ball. Then he does Rooney, clear as day, (the referee is) six yards from it and doesn’t do anything. That changes the game. These are decisions that change a game.”

Poor Fergusson, poor Rooney... I love the hypocrisy in this... he forgot to remember that rooney shouldn't be even playing, since last game he elbow wigan's player in the face right in front of the referee... and the FA didn't move a finger to punish him...

Fergusson is the one who should be ashamed... talking about witchhunt (as if the elbow didn't happened) in the end of man u - wigan and now talking about how they were robbed...
