Liverpool have confirmed that Steven Gerrard is set for a four week spell on the sidelines. The announcement comes following consultation with a specialist which led to surgery on his troublesome groin.

In Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms, this will come as a blow to Gerrard’s 6.8% ownership as the instrumental midfielder looks set to potentially miss at least the next two Premier League fixtures (BOL whm). The skipper will also sit out next Thursday’s crunch Europa League second leg fixture with Braga; Liverpool trail 1-0 from last night’s first leg.

Liverpool’s spot kicks will now be up for grabs in Gerrard’s absence. After scoring a memorable hat-trick against Manchester United last weekend, Dirk Kuyt may be at the front of the queue having already assumed duties this season. The Dutchman has been a key figure in Liverpool’s turn in fortune over the last few months and, with Gerrard out of action, holds plenty of potential. Luis Suarez may yet have something to say when it comes to spot-kick duty, the Uruguayan will also be looking to pick up direct free-kicks – it was his effort from distance which led to Kuyt’s hat-trick goal against United.

Gerrard’s setback comes at a time when new signing Andy Carroll is in line to make his full debut for the club, following his £35 million pound move from Newcastle. Carroll’s influence as a target man was seen briefly in his substitute appearance during last night’s game with Braga. Kenny Dalglish will be frustrated at the timing of these events – Liverpool are surely set to miss Gerrard’s delivery, which would be a perfect compliment to Carroll’s aerial dominance in the box.

Injuries to FPL midfield favourites are now mounting up, leaving Fantasy Managers searching for replacements. Gerrard joins an already overflowing list which includes Tim Cahill, Cesc Fabregas, Nani, Theo Walcott and Mikel Arteta amongst others. The likes of Kuyt, Samir Nasri and the Villa contingent of Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Marc Albrighton are set to pick up further interest as a result, while Frank Lampard’s recent resurgence could well see renewed interest.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

its high time they get rid of Bangladesh and kenya's Test Nation status now, because ireland and netherlands deserve it just as much.

Disagree. Bangladesh are much better than both those sides. I doubt it will be long until Bangladesh are better than England, they just need at least one genuine fast bowler.

i didnt realise that kenya dont have a test status. i am sure they were going to get one back in 2003-2005 ish.
@jamsiep - if bangladesh played the qualifying tournament along with the other smaller teams, i reckon there would have been quite a chance of bangladesh not qualifying for the world cup at all. they've got talent but dont know how to finish the game, whats the point.

i reckon that any team that didnt make it through to the quarter finals in the previous world cups should have to go through the qualifying stage for the next world cup. (although that would mean that india would have had to go through the qualifiers for this world cup.)

Agreed that the Bangladesh side at the moment doesn't have the mental toughness at the moment, but they are young and it should come with time. Sri Lanka weren't too dissimilar to Bangladesh at the moment when they first started out playing test cricket.

In terms of natural talent, this Bangladesh side is vastly superior to any of the 'minnows' in this World Cup.

dont forget that there've been enough opportunities for over 20 years now to be a competent team in ODIs. seeing that the smaller teams have no experience at this level, they have performed much better than the shabby unimproving bangladesh team. i would change my mind if they win today though 😉

Is there any chance Stoke might keep a cleanie against Newcastle? I want rid of Huth and am not willing to wait for his "goal threat" to pay off again, but, at home it is hard to take him out this week, albeit that they have been incapable of keeping clean sheets recently.

Ya, well I am going for a midfield of VDV/Lampard/Nani/Adam and Young, with Djourou and RVP as Arsenal cover, so no room at the inn for him, and all of the midfield are set piece takers/pen takers (bar Nani)

Thats a really interesting point i was look at having the same midfield with Nasri instead of Young and having Djourou & RVP so having Young does make more sense, espcially as it seems that some of Nasri point disappear when Fab & RVP play.

Yeah I am going for Nani VdV Lamparrd but not sure about other two spots. I have Arteta and Bentley in there. Probably gonna keep Bentley up until his double then get rid for Adam and swa Arteta out for either O'Hara or Nasri. nasri most likely as he has a double coming up!
Not sure wether I should keep Kolarov either...

Just looking at my Wildcard team and i have two questions:

    1. Im looking to have Luiz long term in my team but im thinking would it be worth going for Rio (cant afford Vidic) for the next two then changing too Luiz after?

    Rio: BOL wst
    Luiz MANC sto

    2. Is Wellbeck gonna be a starter from now on or is he too risky a pick?

i like your WC team but id go for someone over welbeck for the next two. newcastle have stoke away which is tough but then wolves at home

plenty of other teams with 2 easier games than welbeck over the next 2 weeks

              guess itd have to be

u dont have to go newc i was just using that as an example

just dont think a punt on welbeck for the next 2 is advisable, if u went for albrighton instead of one of your expensive midfielders u could afford a more expensive striker for the next 2 then switch to welbeck and the midfielder in 2 weeks

Rio? There is no chance that he will come straight back in and play back to back games regardless of the gaps between them. Fergie says he is out this weekend again, the only cheaper way into the United defence is VDS, failing having him, I don't think there is anyone else worth it bar Evra and Vidic.

I think Jarvis has the propensity for up and down like returns, if it has to be a cheapie, what about Beausejour, he is in form, looking as sharp as he did in the WC and has a double coming up too, especially if you don't plan to use him all that often.

Would prefer Albrighton over Jarvis mind if it is a choice between those two, more targets to aim at.

I don't fancy them against the windies tbh without Broad and Pietersen.

They look so average. If gayle and pollard fire for west indies, it could get really messy.

Going to sit on the fence for that match.

as nick knight rightly said: "opposition don't want to get trott out because they know he can't hurt them." i'm sure MOTM judges would realise morgan's strike-rate more than out-weigh's trott extra few runs. besides it looks ike a bangladesh win now anyway. only swann could change the game now imo

Watched Inception the other night for the third time, loved it even more, the most layered movie I have seen in years, and not in the obvious the dreams are layers kindof way, just a great great movie.

Saw Cyrus last night ** very disappointing, liked Jonah Hill playing a slightly different character, but the film was confused as to whether it was a laugh out loud comedy, or a quirky romantic comedy, and it fails on so many levels, badly written but funny in spots, John C Reilly needs to play a new character already.

Watched The Social Network again last night, perfection, ***** Jess Eisenberg is my new favourite actor and only lost out to yet another "Oscar can't resist hollocaust/handicapped best actor award"

Shakib contributed with bat and ball. Morgan was immense, but lost. Mahmudullah and Shaiful won it for Bangledesh.
