After a tough last few gameweeks that have seen them collect just one point from five Premier League matches, Sunderland’s fixtures are starting to look appealing again. There’s no doubt Steve Bruce’s side rode their luck a little in the recent goalless draw at the Emirates, but the Black Cats boss will take heart in the spirited performance ahead of the upcoming home match against Liverpool, which is then followed by a trip to Eastlands to face Man City.

Sunderland then have one of the most favourable run-ins of any team in the Premier League, with just one of their last seven fixtures (WBA, bir, WIG, FUL, bol, WOL, whm) against a team in the top half of the table. Beaten just three times at the Stadium of Light this season, Bruce will be looking for his side to push on from their current league position of eighth and the contribution of Asamoah Gyan will be vital.

In his debut season, Gyan is the club’s top scorer with nine league goals and- with Darren Bent’s departure coupled with injuries to both Danny Welbeck and Frazier Campbell- has cemented his role as Sunderland’s key forward since moving to Wearside at the tail end of last August.

With four goals, two assists and four Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points since the turn of the year, Gyan has continued to bang in the goals despite his side’s indifferent form. Bearing in mind the afore-mentioned set of fixtures, the Ghanaian could well be finding the net a few more times before the season is out, particularly now as Sunderland have key players such as Lee Cattermole returning from injury to strengthen their starting XI.

Although last week saw Welbeck make a brief substitute appearance since succumbing to a knee injury in early January, Gyan looks the more reliable of Sunderland‘s forwards to plump for, in terms of both performance and availability. Priced at just £7.0m and with 4.2% Fantasy Ownership, he’s still relatively cheap enough to free up FPL budgets for those Fantasy Managers looking to juggle personnel in light of the upcoming blank and/or double gameweeks.

Ahead of this week‘s home encounter with Liverpool, the stats certainly seem to be favourable for those mulling over an imminent punt on the Sunderland forward; Gyan has found the net in three of his last four home games and, with Liverpool conceding at least two goals in six of their last eight away games, the signs are looking good.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      You're in a similar position to me, Keith: possibly no g/k this week 🙁

      Save a transfer would be the best option imo as you can put out a decent team this week. Swap Berbs and Brunt for Adam and VDV next week.

    Morning guys, What do you think is the best option? My current squad is linked. Thanks

    (A) Berba & Arteta -> RVP & Adam (4 point hit)
    (B) Tevez & Djourou -> RVP & Walker (4 point hit)
    (C) Baines, Arteta & Tevez -> Walker, Lampard & RVP (8 point hit)

      Hi Jinswick-you still have lots of injury concerns! Good rank considering.

      It's very hard for me to recommend hits to someone because my strategy is based around the fixture list so when I buy someone in, I'm looking at getting at least five games out of them.

      You can get three defenders out this week so leave them.

      If Berba and VDV play, you will be okay. My preference would be to remove Arteta for Adam.

      Good luck!

      ...and what's wrong with Star Wars-it's in my top ten films of all time 🙂

        Haha, I'm a big Star Wars fan also - just don't think it's the best film ever (as it often gets claimed to be).

        My whole transfer plan this week seems to surround Berbatov. Since I have 4 definite non-starters in Stockdale, Djourou, Kelly and Arteta I feel I should really be shipping out one of them just in case any of my other 11 don't play (Berba the main concern, but there's also VDV & Zigic). I've a feeling Arsenal will come out guns firing this w/e after their recent debacle, and not having RVP could burn me. My head says Fergie can't drop Hernandez given his form, so Berba is likely to be benched. I also want Adam for the run in, but ideally not until GW33.

        Perhaps Arteta & Berba -> Adam & RVP (4 point hit) is the way forward? Could also get Bale over Adam?
        Main downside being that if Berba starts and goes nuts I will be gutted!
        What you think?

          RVP and Adam are good transfers-Adam seems to score pts against one and all. WBA have tightened up under RH so I'm not sure if ARS will get the win.

          That's why I'd be tempted to keep Berbs-he could well play. You have VDV so you may as well hang on.

            True - do you think we'll know the Utd starting line up before the deadline?

            Your point about having VDV - is that for captaincy purposes?

              My point with VDV was that you might as well start him to save the hit. I wouldn't cap'n him just in case he only plays 10 mins.
              I don't have him yet because I just want to monitor his fitness and game time. One for next week.

              The Utd kick off-when is it 3pm? Highly unlikely we'll know the line up.

              Better go...I sense Darth Vader is about.

          Not ready for work yet. I lost my money on Windies yesterday. What about Liverpool? What an absolute pile of rubbish they were. Kuyt was offside around 40 times. Joe Cole was beating three players just to pass the ball back towards his own goal and N'Gog makes Bendtner look awesome.

      Jinswick, problem is you will want him back if ManU's gw33 fixture turns into a dobule later on perhaps.

      No idea what my plans are this week. Im cured from the force so no hits....

        (B) Berba & Arteta -> RVP & Adam (4 points)

                im inclinded to think he will start, but i cant rely on my judgement when its clouded by owning him. 🙂 SAF benched berba after his 5 goal game didnt he? Doesnt seem to go by whos in top form. I think berba is due to start and the perfect script is a trick, a double price rise, and a nice transfer to RVP in time for next GW.

              i am captaining him this week because my fpl season is all but over after i failed to qualify for the ffs cup now it does not matter to me whether i finish 10k or 100k and even if i captained any other player he is not going to score more than 2 points either...

              p.s.u should play safe if u want to win the cup because ur cup opponent has rooney and i think he will captain him...

                  vdv by far... he is on all set-pieces and he playing west ham at home who will concede away from home ...only worry is defoe could go mad on his day and take all the points of vdv but he is far better choice than nasri this week...

      Oh dear, it won't be free next week, it'll still be at the cost of doing another transfer. If you're def getting rvp in, you need todecide whether you'd prefer having him this week alone, or Berb. The point hit is irrelevant unless you care about a cup competition

        i care about a cup competition.

        im trying to rationalize this decision in different ways. Im defitnite doing berb->rvp next week barring rvp injury, even if berbs has a big haul. I already have rooney. i want to win my cup matchup and we have a very similar squad.

        It's more than that though. If you assume that you are going to make a fixed number of transfers between now and the end of the season, and those transfers will cumulatively cost at least 4 points, then the week in which you make the transfer is irrelevant. The transfer rollover system means that regardless of the week you make the transfers, they should cost the same in total, unless you bizarrely refuse to use a free transfer, i.e. you have two free transfers one week and you don't use either.

          That's my point, unless you don't think you'll need to take another single hit for the rest of the season, there's no need to wait a week to do this transfer, as doing it now will make a subsequent hit 4 points cheaper due to rollover rule

    armband between VDV, Rooney, Nani or Nasri? fantasy cup opponent has all except nasri and a 4 point advantage already, i dont want to pick who he picks, my best chance to win. Im thinking nasri might be worth the gamble, all or nothing play, what you lads think?

      Best you can do is try and wait for any hint of Berba playing. Although with Mancini likely to drop Balotelli against Chelsea, Tevez might have a more attacking role, in which case I'd swap Berbatov. Hope that helps.
