The international break has brought our Fantasy dealings to an uncomfortable halt – a most untimely distraction that can furrow brows with further injury concerns.

To this point, the majority of Fantasy Managers will have come out of the weekend unscathed, but with Tuesday’s round of qualifiers and friendlies to come, here’s a few scribbles on some notable events of the last 48-hours…

Kevin Doyle is, so far, the only major casualty of the weekend. That will provide little compensation for Wolves who are now facing up to their season run-in without their influential strike. Doyle suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s 2-1 win for the Republic of Ireland over Macedonia after just 15 minutes. Republic boss Giovanni Trapattoni was not optimistic in his post-match analysis…

“It’s his medial knee ligament. I think he may be out for one or two months, so it’s a very serious injury.”

There is no official reaction from the Wolves camp just yet but Mick McCarthy will no doubt be devastated by the news. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake now looks set to lead the attack for the remaining fixtures. Blake is a 4.9 prospect in the Fantasy Premier League game and may earn some interest if Wolves continue their strong form over what is a favourable schedule of fixtures. Nenad Milijas could also have his stock improved as a result of gaining spot-kick duties from Doyle, although Stephen Hunt is another candidate here having recently declared himself fit for a return.

Man City remain hopeful that Micah Richards will recover from a hamstring injury to be in contention for their FA Cup semi-final with United on April 16. Richards sustained the injury whilst on duty with England’s U21’s – forced off after just 4 minutes of Thursday’s 4-0 win. Richards is certain to miss league fixtures against Sunderland and Liverpool, with either Jereome Boateng or Pablo Zabaleta set for the right-back role. The latter would seem very doubtful having been granted indefinite compassionate leave to be at the bedside of his seriously ill father in Argentina. It means that Boateng looks set for the shirt, which would seem to assure Aleksandar Kolarov’s place at left-back for gameweek 31 at least.

The Gareth Bale situation going into gameweek 31 looks precarious for his Fantasy owners. Bale was forced out of Wales’ clash with England with a hamstring injury which may or may not have occurred whilst in training with his national side. Regardless, Bale will now be a doubt for the trip to Wigan next weekend. Harry Redknapp has recently confirmed that Bale has not suffered a serious setback, however, it’s clear that he will take no risks with his star asset…

“The first I heard of it was at 10 o’clock on Wednesday night when our physio called
me. I feared the worst but he’s seen our physio and it’s only tightness…There’s no tear but if he plays and it pings, he’s had it.”

Saturday’s Wigan clash immediately precedes the first leg of the Champions League tie with Real Madrid on Tuesday. If there is any doubt over Bale’s hamstring, he will surely sit out of the DW Stadium trip.

On that note, Both Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart started their respective friendlies this weekend. Modric played 90 minutes in Croatia’s 1-0 defeat in Greece, while Van der Vaart was withdrawn on 81 minutes having scored in Holland’s 4-0 over Hungary.

Nikola Zigic was kept out of Serbia’s 2-1 win over Northern Ireland on Friday with his groin injury still troubling him. Birmingham have been sweating on the big striker’s fitness ahead of the international break and are hopeful that, although Zigic has joined up with the Serbian squad, he will be kept out of the action. Serbia face Estonia in a second qualifier on Tuesday – it will be interesting to see if Zigic makes an appearance in that one. The lumbering centre-forward could well be a target for Fantasy Managers once fit given Birmingham’s forthcoming schedule (BOL bla SUN/che liv WOL new).

Javier Hernandez scored twice in Mexico’s 3-1 friendly win over Paraguay – a timely reminder, if Alex Ferguson really needed one, of the “Little Pea’s” current run of form.

West Ham fans will have admired Scott Parker’s showing for England in the 2-0 win over Wales but he wasn’t their only player to come out of the weekend with plaudits. Demba Ba continued his run of outstanding displays by grabbing a late winner for Senegal in the 1-0 African Nations Cup qualifier in Cameroon. The form of such key player bodes well for Avram Grant ahead of what is quite simply a tortuous run of forthcoming fixtures (MUN bol AVL che mcy).

Finally, Luis Suarez has been recalling his first month of action in the Premier League, predictably emphasising that he’s never experienced such a frantic pace. Significantly however, Suarez also came out with this…

“In other leagues defences play very tight but here you get space. I’m enjoying it.”

Suarez may have been referring to his recent goal at Sunderland in that respect – perhaps not the best example of Premier league defending right now. Even so, it’s food for thought given the goalscoring record of the Uruguayan before arriving in England. Suarez has so far notched 2 goals and 3 assists in his four Premier League starts and Fantasy Managers are beginning to take notice. Suarez has so far attracted over 27,000 new owners this gameweek, bettered only by Robin Van Persie, Charlie Adam and David Luiz.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Cheers Mark. Interesting comment from Suarez, reminds me of Torres who said very similar things in his first season in England where he immediately found it easier to score than in his Atletico days.

        My rival has Suarez, Hernandez and Tevez as his front 3.

        I have Bent, Zigic and Van Persie.

        Rival's worried i'm going to bring in Suarez but I'm not convinced that the run of games he has coming up is going to be worth it.

        After West Brom Liverpool's fixtures get trickier and there'll be a lot of other players in bonus pt contention in those games.

    I'll replace Saha soon, but should I be worried?

      Should you be worried?

      Only if Van Persie and Rooney get injured. Plenty of decent options to replace Saha with and your main two strikers are top drawer.

    Does this plan for the next few GWs sounds decent?

    GW31: Arteta -> Adam
    GW32: A Young & Kolarov -> Lampard & Walker (4 points)
    GW33: Baines, Coleman & Berbatov -> Luiz, Carr & Torres (8 points)
    GW34: Nasri -> Dempsey
    GW35: Nothing
    GW36: Torres & Carr -> Tevez & Dawson

    Would give me 8 doubles for GW33 and captain Lampard in GW32&33.

    Oh, and current squad is:

    Foster, Stockdale
    Baines, Coleman, Kolarov, Djourou, Kelly
    Nani, VDV, Nasri, A Young, Arteta
    RVP, Berbatov, Zigic
    Bank 1.2m

        Yeah I agree - main reasons are the fear factor of him finding some form in the double and it also gives an easy way of getting Tevez back in later on.

    Hows this plan of action!

    Begovic (Chesney)

    Coleman Walker Smalling (Kolarov Carr)

    VDV Young Nasri nani (Barton)

    Saha RVP Rooney

    GW31: Young and Kolarov out for Luiz and Adam and bench Saha in a 3-5-2.

    GW32: Nasri and Saha out for Gyan and Lampard.

    It means taking out Nasri for Blackpool away, but Chelsea have Wigan at home followed by a much better double in GW33, plus I have RVP for Arsenal coverage.

      Is it not worth giving Kolarov 1 final game given it's (SUN)??

      I actually think you could save a transfer this week and still get a decent team out. Maybe even look at getting Foster/Gomes in for Chesny?

          I think Kolarov definitely goes in GW32, if not before. I'm in the same boat and that's my plan.

          You can definitely save a transfer this week imo. Then get in 2/3 Chelskis in GW32. Maybe Kolarov, Young, Saha -> Luiz, Lampard, Welbeck?

        I agree. I'm playing Kolarov this week.

        I get the feeling that, somehow, the pesky fella is going to end up staying in my team the rest of the season.

        To answer your earlier question, jinswick, I'm a Nasri owner and I'm getting rid before the dgw.

        Firstly, I don't see Liverpool and Spurs as being a particularly great dgw for the gunners.

        Second, Fabs and Walcott will be back which will eat into Nasri's point potential.

        I'll probably only have RVP for gw33.

        Arsenal will probably choke in those games anyway.

          I'm actually tempted to ditch Nasri instead of A Young for Lampard in GW32 and also only have RVP as Arsenal coverage for the double. Madness?

          I think
          GW31: Arteta -> Adam
          GW32: Baines & Nasri -> Lampard & Luiz (4 points)

            Not madness at all.

            You need Lamps far more than you need Nasri. Lamps and Luiz are essential for gw33. Nasri isn't.

            I'd keep Baines if at all possible. Can you not get Luiz in for Kolarov or Coleman instead?

    Hi

    I am looking to sell Saha for a cheap striker ( <5.5). Who is my best option? Shortlist so far..

    Welbeck - Good fixtures? Much cheapness
    Beckford - Good fixtures, definite starter but no real firm this season
    Ba - Tricky fixtures but looks a player who might also be in the frame for BPs
    Sturridge - Good fixtures but not guaranteed to figure. Top end of price range.

    Anybody else looking to bring in a cheapie?

      sturridge is your man.

      He's shown that he's a bonus point magnet by getting 3bps in his first 3 games, and also scoring 4 in his first 4.

      There's no way that he isn't a definite starter for the remainder of the season.

        Au contraire, I'm having an absolute whale of a time! 😉

        The odds for a draw on that game were 2/5 at virtually all bookmakers (well, those who weren't refusing to take bets on the game) and 1-1 was as low 3/2. Pretty appalling that this sort of thing happens in second tier football in Italy. Next time Waldaz is online I'll give him a grilling about it.

    Terry, Lampard, Cole, Rooney, Dawson and Walker have been released from the England squad to play Ghana. Who will b captain now? #englandfc

    I have a feeling it will be given to Wilshere.

      It'll be Barry or someone equally as yawnsome. Capello said he's making 11 changes so it can't be Jack W.

    I can see picking a team at the start of next season being a big struggle. VdV, Nani, Van Persie, Bale & Nasri will all go up in value by quite a lot imo.

    Plus even though they've had poor seasons, I can't really see FPL dropping Fabregas, Torres & Drogba's prices by that much.

      Taarabt will be cheap.

      If Blackpool stay up then a midfield with Adam and Taarabt in it frees up a lot of cash.

      I'd look at Faurlin too. If Swansea come up then Scott Sinclair will be a good cheap striker option.

      its the right move to make this gw.

      See my post above, I think you want to keep Baines if at all possible. So, Coleman or Kolarov has to make way for Luiz.

      You want Lamps too so I think you may need to either downgrade Berbs or sacrifice both Nasri and Young.

      After this gw I reckon you can do Berbs to Gyan to help free up the cash you need for Lamps.

      I'd consider Coleman/Kolarov to Walker or Smalling as well to leave you room to get Luiz in for the other one of those two.

          Given the options and fixtures coming for all the big players i like the idea of carrying Zigic just so to bench someone from front 8.
          Alot of the players who have done well at varying parts of the year have some excellent fixtures coming up so carrying a someone to bench is pretty good imo.

      I'm very tempted, think their are too many cheap options up front who offer much more value than Rooney played as a defensive midfielder for 11.9 or whatever he is.

        I'm tempted too. However, I'm also wondering whether getting Gyan in for Zigic next week is a better use of my funds.

        Would give me a front 3 of Van Persie, Bent and Gyan.

        Also leaves me enough to get Luiz in for Kolarov without the need for loads of transfers.

        I like Man Utd's run in but Rooney out on the left is not the ideal scenario for a £12m striker, is it!

    Pretty funny Matt Symth kept going over and back to Collins and Wilkins and dude in the middle trying to talk about 5 times and was never asked or allowed, then just got pissed as he was ignored.

    Anyone thinking about losing VDV this week? I know I've only had him for one week, but I'm already concerned about rotation around the CL games - Tottenham's next two league games (wig STK) come directly before a CL game in the week. And they no longer have a double in week 33....

      VDV is so 2010, I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't see it coming.

      He lucked out immensely with a lot of refereeing decisions that made him such a great prospect but that was never going to last. Handballing before every goal etc. I'm probably selling rather soon.

        ha! I guess the same is kind of true of myself.... I made all those comments about VDV being overhyped after a couple of tap-ins from Crouch knock downs, and then I fell for the hype myself.

        He's an absolute injury nightmare, so I wouldn't be surprised if his minutes in the league over the next few weeks are limited.

        Quite probably the same move for me... It also involves getting rid of Torres, which I'm reluctantly coming round to. Forward rotation at Chelsea could be a big issue, it's already been evident since Torres joined, with Torres the one constant - but I can see that changing.

        Nani being shit on the left earlier seasons was because he was a disgustingly poor player mentally and physically. He'll do great on the left now that he has improved so much imo.

          It's because he's more limited on the left as 90% of the time he'll cut inside onto his right foot. It's strange he doesn't try to vary his game more and beat his man to the byline as when he's on the right he usually opts to shoot with his left foot!

          Maybe i am just remembering the inconsistent days, but it's enough to put a question mark over him.

        But he was playing fairly deep against West Ham, and that was in a 4-4-1-1 so it will probably be even worse if 'Arry opts for 4-4-2 in some games - as you were bleating on about only a week ago. 😉

          But no considering I have Lampard and nearly 13mil then having VDV who will be more advanced and much cheaper isnt that much of a risk.

    Here is a tough one. Im getting both Fabregas and Lampard over the next two two GW's. Sacrifices will need to be made. It's either:

    Lose Young for O'hara, VDV for Fabregas & Nasri for Lampard
    or
    Lose Rooney for Suarez, VdV for Cesc & Nasri for Lamps.

    So it basically comes down to Suarez & Young vs O'hara & Rooney!?

        Young has been so unlucky not to have scored big over the last 2 GW's though, great fixtures aswell. Im even tempted to lose Nani and keep Young.

      Why?

      I don't get loading up on Arsenal for dgw33. They face Liverpool and Spurs. Hardly screams goalfest to me!

      VdV has a double too and great fixtures the rest of the way.

      The fixtures toughen for Liverpool after this week so I don't know that Rooney to Suarez is going to offer you anything better than what you already have.

      I would look at getting O'Hara in for Nasri but other than that I wouldn't mess up that midfield.

      Arshavin, Fabregas and RVP (c) this week for me. Could be messy. 😉

          I didn't see them, and it sounds like I probably don't want to.

        Id rather Walcott that the other 2 midfielders. Im considering getting him for Nasri.
        Walcott v Blackburn and Blackpool fighting relegation will be perfect if fit.

          Will he even be fit? He probably won't even get in the side with Arshavin's improving form. If were Wenger, I'd play:

          Song Nasri
          Walcott Fabregas Arshavin
          RVP

          No joke. Wilshere can do one.

            Arshavin has a habit of getting a rest after international weeks.
            Armenia away already , Does he play mid week?
