Wayne Rooney remains tight-lipped as he slotted home the decisive goal in a typically storming Champions League first leg at Stamford Bridge. With Chelsea’s penalty claims rebuffed, the scence is set for a tumultuous return leg as United look to protect their slim advantage. Fantasy Managers on alert then – weekend rotation is a very real prospect. Here’s the notes…

Alex Ferguson’s team selection was significant. Rio Ferdinand’s return to fitness saw him slotted back alongside Nemanja Vidic and he rewarded that decision with a strong display in tandem with United’s Serb skipper. Chris Smalling was relegated to the bench then – his prospects of regular starts now presumably at an end, although there is a good chance that Ferguson will opt to rest Ferdinand for the second-leg and start Smalling against Fulham this weekend. More on that to come.

Ji-sung Park again earned a start in midfield, with Antonio Valencia also preferred on the opposite flank. That meant no place once more for Nani. As discussed in Saturday’s Knee Jerk following Nani’s relegation to the bench at West Ham, there is a fear that the Portuguese winger will be rested and rotated now that Park and Valencia are options. This was only confirmed by last night’s selection, compounded by another couple of convincing displays from the pair. No other player created more opportunities for team-mates (key passes) than Valencia, even though he played the majority of the second-half at right-back.

While Nani’s stock took another dent, the Wayne Rooney’s certainty enjoyed a further boost. The striker’s seventh goal in eight games for United won the tie and, should he escape with a reduced ban from today’s FA verdict, we can surely expect renewed Fantasy interest in Rooney.

Alex Ferguson offered us this post-match on Rooney’s performance…

“I thought Wayne was excellent, his work rate and his desire to play were marvellous. He got a lot of abuse tonight and some late tackles but he just got up again and just played his game. That shows the courage of the player…He’s now more regular in his goalscoring which, at this stage of the season, is going to be important to us. His goal tonight was another important one. But I think the whole team takes great credit.”

Rooney looks settled in partnership with Javier Hernandez and with Valencia back to provide a regular stream of crosses, the prospects of a continued spurt of Fantasy points for the remaining games looks good. Fantasy Managers will surely be contemplating the move for Rooney, with Nani a potential transfer casualty in midfield given the new doubts surrounding his starting role.

Chelsea are still very much in the tie however and next week’s second leg promises to be a bitterly contested encounter within an Old Trafford cauldron. Fantasy Managers will need to be mindful of rest and rotation ahead of Tuesday’s tie.

While Ferguson will likely rest Ferdinand at the back, Valencia and/or Park would also seem set to be preserved along with Giggs. The likes of Nani, Paul Scholes and Darron Gibson could all earn recalls against Fulham then. Dimitar Berbartov also looks a certain starter given that Rooney is facing suspension. Rafael will be an injury doubt given that he was stretchered from the field following a clash with Didier Drogba – his role at right-back will likely to brother Fabio this weekend.

As for Chelsea, Carlo Ancelotti again seems likely to rotate his strikers having watched Fernando Torres draw a blank. He could well be rested to the bench against Wigan, as could Didier Drogba, with Nicolhas Anelka and Salomon Kalou in line to lead the attack. Florent Malouda would also seem set to start having been dropped to the bench last night. David Luiz looks nailed-on to return to the back four, with Branislav Ivanovic set to make way – the Brazilian is of course ineligible for the second-leg. Kalou could be the short-term prospect to consider here then – he is available as midfielder in the FPL, priced at 7.1m.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

          I bet on Park first goalscorer, but it was a free bet my pub does. If you guess the first goalscorer you win a pint, if you guess the minute of the first goal you win a pint and again for the final score. I got none of them but still a nice deal I feel.

            When you place his uncertainty of game time up against Lampard's fixtures/recent stats/set plays/more games then it becomes tempting to ship Nani out. Particularly as player transfer values are redundant at this stage.
            Plus got to get rid of Nolan and Lennon.

    please rank these defenders for the weekend, have to start one.

    Carr (bla)
    Coleman (wol)
    Simpson (avl)

    i fancy carr for best CS opportunity, but Coleman is the attacking threat of the bunch. frankly i dont see any cleanies here, but cant afford another transfer. Gotta hope for one.

      Scanned the last 4 gwk stats earlier and I noticed Coleman comes top defender for goal attempts. Like you say, an attacking threat with the bonus of a cs.

      Coleman 1st, Carr 2nd, Simpson 3rd.

      How would you rank Coleman with RJ, Walker and Kolarov?

        already starting walker, so i rate him higher surely. RJ is a better birm option than carr, and a good bet for BPs if birm come away with any points. kolarov has been a headache for me.

        Id probably go Walker, RJ, Coleman, Kolarov. But my advice is as valuble as a screen door on a submarine.

    Was I right in thinking Van der Saar was injured last night? He wasn't taking free kicks at the end.

    a) Tevez & Silva -> Bent & Lampard
    b) Tevez & VDV -> Bent & Lampard
    c) Tevez & Nani -> Bent & Lampard
    d) Silva & VDV -> Adam & Lampard

      a) despite VDV not playing full games and their return leg vs madrid on wed, he's the better one to hold on to. City have a blank in GW33 and harder fixtures in the ST. Ideally bring in Adam, Bent and Lamps

    Nani has to go now I think, lads and lasses.

    Was going to do Nasri to Adam and Coleman to Luiz with my 2 free's this week, but wondering now whether to do Nani to Adam instead.

    Would leave me no United cover this week. But the only one I want now is Rooney once he's served his ban.

    Bought Nani at £8m in about week 3, I think, so it will be a wrench to let him go. But there's no room for sentiment in this game and, clearly, Nani and Berbs influence on the season from hereon in is going to be limited.

    What is the take on Nani being left out last night having been rested at the weekend? Is he injured or was Valencia preferred for tactical reasons? Dont want another weekend of him sitting on the bench!

      IMO he was a doubt for the weekend and then he was never gonna play last night as Fergie wanted the more defensively sound Valencia & Park. He'll still play a big part IMO but Fergie has more options now so he can give Nani the odd rest plus it might be motivational as he's not been quite as good recently.

      Coleman/Vidic/Luiz/RJ/Bardsley,
      Nani/Nasri/VdV/Adam/Brunt,
      Tevez/RVP/Rooney.

      Two weekly transfers.Thinking of doing Rooney->Gyan/Chicharito,Nasri->Lampard.Or is it a bit short-sighted to sell Nasri when he himself has a double coming up,and to sell Rooney when he’ll only be missing one game?I could sell Tevez instead for Bent/Chico and do Nasri->Lampard.What do you guys think?

      So with Rooney confirmed 2 match ban... keep him or ship him out?

      He'll be back for EVERTON - Arsenal - CHELSEA.

      Not the easiest of 2 games. Man U's final 2 could be big wins, but that would depend how the title chase is looking.

      Well, a fantastic night, and I have just spent the last 20 minutes flicking through some of the comments following the game, in particular the ABU Brigade led my Mr Priest (you wouldn't deny that JP) and the "die hard" United boys. We have seen a different forum this year at FFS, having posted here for 4 years now I have to say I didn't like the change in tone and hostility on here at times this year but I was laughing my ass off at the posts, witty, informed and generally in good spirits.

      This is a public apology to Michael Carrick though, he blew my Michael Carrick hating socks off last night, I just think he has not pulled his weight for a long time (my humble opinion of course) and he was truly exceptional last night. He was ruthless in the tackle and showed some of the ambition in passing we signed him for. Plaudits also go to Wazzer, the Sung of Seoul, Rio, Valencia.

      On the Lampard debate, he could of scored from the scuffed shot on the line cleared by Evra, he had a beauty of a free kick (surprisingly - but it was indirect I suppose, we know he can whip them in) that Anelka was unlucky not to get more contact on, and for once, he had a direct free kick actually nearly threaten the keeper, added to this is the fact they were denied a stone wall penalty when Evra took Ramires down in the box (although I did see Akers argument as to why it was outside of the box, but the page linked seems to be down) - so, despite not really playing all that well Frank did alot to get himself on the score sheet, and while not being majorly influential, I am re-considering my "no need for Lampard" viewpoint.

      Nothing else occurs.
