Arsenal miss chances aplenty but still enjoy their day to the seaside, putting three past Blackpool to move seven points off the top with a game in hand. Near the bottom, Aston Villa record a crucial victory in a weekend that saw Gerard Houllier’s side become the only club in the lower half of the table to pick up all three points….Here’s the notes from yesterday afternoon.

Gunners Keep Up the Chase
With the concise passing of Cesc Fabregas cutting apart Blackpool’s flimsy offside trap time and again, Arsenal were granted numerous opportunities to find the net in their visit to Bloomfield Road and it’s indicative of their recent wastefulness that Richard Kingson was beaten on just three occasions. Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie, in particular, should have put the game beyond their hosts in a manner far more emphatic than the 3-1 scoreline suggests. Van Persie, nevertheless, did notch a goal, an assist and was subsequently awarded the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

The win takes Arsenal’s unbeaten league run to fourteen games and adds extra impetus to their upcoming double gameweek (LIV & tot), where investment in their players will undoubtedly be high, despite a tricky pair of games.

Jens Between the Sticks
A pre-match knee injury to Manuel Almunia gave Jens Lehmann the chance to make a return to the Arsenal first team and the German came up with one or two crucial saves to maintain the Gunners lead at times. After the game, Arsene Wenger admitted he is unsure whether Almunia will be ready for next Sunday Emirates showdown with Liverpool. Wojciech Szczesny was also described as being “not far away” from his return.

Theo Theory
Wenger clearly has a selection headache with Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott all vying for roles on the flank in Arsenal’s midfield. Nasri looks his preferred option with Arshavin and Walcott seemingly set to rotate. It was the latter on the bench at Blackpool but he saw action on the hour-mark and provided the pass for Van Persie’s simple third goal. Walcott would now seem well placed to start the Emirates clash with Liverpool on Sunday – if he can impress in that one, he could also seal his starting role for Arsenal’s second fixture of the gameweek at Spurs. Walcott looks a double gameweek gamble then but, at 6.9 in the FPL, one that some may opt to take.

Blackpool Slump Again
The home defeat means Ian Holloway’s side have picked up five points from their last twelve games and the only real positive for Blackpool this weekend is that all the teams below them lost, too. Olly will need all his powers of motivation to rally the troops, with the Seasiders now facing a critical run of three home games in succession (WIG, NEW, STK) which may just determine their chances of survival. At least DJ Campbell has served his suspension and got some game time under his belt yesterday ahead of next weekend’s vital match against Roberto Martinez’s bottom of the table Latics.

Villa Change Tactics
Gerard Houllier switched systems for the home game with Newcastle, reverting to a 4-4-2 that saw Gabby Agbonlahor join Darren Bent up front. Ashley Young, having had a free role behind Bent of late, moved back to the left wing, though swapped flanks with Stewart Downing throughout the game. This allowed Stilian Petrov to join Jean Makoun in the centre of midfield, giving the home side a more robust edge in the middle.

Villa have been defensively poor this season and this was their first clean sheet in ten games and only their second since gameweek ten. The 1-0 win should boost their confidence ahead of a decent run of fixtures that reads (whm, STK, wba, WIG).

Darren Bent
Owners of the forward can count themselves unlucky, as Bent was on the wrong side of two contentious decisions that, on another day, could have seen him walk away with a decent Fantasy haul. The January signing found the net at the tail end of the first half only for it to be harshly ruled out for offside then, in the second forty-five, was fouled inside the Newcastle box and could easily have won a penalty for his side. Rather than returning two goals or one goal and an assist, he finished the match with nothing to show for his efforts and picked up just 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points instead.

Pardew Counts The Cost of Absentees
Alan Pardew already had to do without both Kevin Nolan and Cheik Tiote for the trip to Villa Park due to suspension, but the Newcastle boss also had to rule Shola Ameobi out of the proceedings with inflammation of the knee, an injury the forward picked up on Saturday. Speaking after the game, though, Pardew is keeping his fingers crossed the situation isn’t serious. Such was the visitors lack of options, Fabrizio Colocinni played in centre midfield in the 1-0 defeat, though Jose Enrique did return to bolster the back-four.

Pardew fielded a 4-4-2 formation with the unfamiliar partnership of Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands leading the line, though the pair rarely threatened their hosts. St James’ Park may have seen plenty of goals for the home side over the course of this season, but this game was the fourth in the last five away from home that Newcastle have failed to find the net. A home game with Man United is up next, followed by a trip to Blackpool and a chance to address this toothless form on the road.

Samir Nasri yesterday just summed my season up... it was painful to watch. I'm the only one in my league who still has him, desperately needed points from him to make up for all my main rivals having Odem or Sturridge.

I'm thinking Downing -> for Nasri or Fabs for next week. Would give me full 11 playing and:

    Foster
    Luiz
    Lampard
    Fabs/Nasri
    RVP

    All playing twice

Did Tevez -> for Sturridge last week which (unless Tevez scores a hat trick this eve) was probably my best transfer of the season, so I have about 5 mil to play with.. Downing to Fabs is do-able

I'll probably be forced to go Lampard for GW33 out of sheer terror incase he does suddenly explode into life, as most will have him captain. If Luiz was guaranteed 180 minutes I'd like a stab at him, but with Alex back it's a bit murky.

      GW34 - Bobby Z.

I said i fancied Luiz for a captaincy punt yesterday. Probably more likely guaranteed safe decent points.

Think you'd be unlucky to get anything less than 16 points as captain. but probably doesnt have the possibilty for a huge score like lamps might.

Cheers for the tip again. He's turning out to be a nice little profit maker each week. 🙂

A friend of mine had a ridiculously lucky Saturday. Had £10 each way on two horses - Ballabriggs and whoever came third. And he put £1 on a stupid odds footy accumulator at around 2,150/1 and it came in! Unbelievable luck.

fookin hell fair play to him

the biggest win (odds-wise) ive had is about 250/1 and that was a acca on teams to win their leagues at start of season a few years back, only had £2 on tho!

yeh gota make the most of it as a lot of rumours down here that everton have already made an approach, altho the manager did say they had opened contract negotiations with him so maybe a chance he'll stay

Yeah, as I was eating my breakfast this morning I saw on SSN that they've (apparently) offered a new contract to Maynard and your captain.

What makes his win even luckier is that there was only 10 teams (I say only, as with over 2,000/1 none of the games he called were heavily odds on, most weeks a good 3+ would have messed it up for him). Fair play to him though.

I've got lamps in and don't regret it at all. He has still had lots of shots at goal over the last few weeks, he's on penalties and has a double. Prefer to have him than not over the double. Could be the best transfer you ever made.

agree that losing nani could be costly. also (as i've posted recently) think that malouda is a fine way into chelsea's attack force, for 3+ million less than lamps. could allow you to avoid downgrading kolarov/vdv (as you're clearly doing to make room for lamps).

ok Ironmilk you are 494 in the world. I'm listening. Why Lampard?

My arguement for RVP is great form - in attacking side - double gameweek - on pens - will be up for the big opponents - most likely to get 3bps per match.

When you put it like that RVP seems the obvious choice but they have two tough games, and I don't see huge attacking returns in either of them.

Lampard also on pens, FKs etc but really just a hunch that Lampard is going to hit a big score. Two relatively easy games should see him amongst the points.

      As is
      Begovic/Mignolet
      Smalling/Carr/Kelly/Walker/Luiz
      Fabregas/Young A/Lampard/Gardner/Adam
      Torres/Gyan/Van Persie

      Thinking of
A - Kelly>Djourou(will he be fit to play)
      B - Adam>Larsson
      C - Young>Nasri(can't do if i bring in Djourou)
D - leave alone, worry about who to bench

      Foster
      RJ Luiz Walker
      Nani Nasri Lamps AYoung Adam
      RVP Hernandez
      Subs: VDS, Carroll, (Huth), (Kelly)
      1.4 in the bank

I planned not to do a transfer but I'm unsure on my second striker.
I could also lose Kelly and get another Brum def but bit scared tripling up...

      Any comment?

Tosey - I put maynard Berba & vdv anytime scorers so didnt hit. QPR done my 4 fold and Choi fell away yesterday. Although i won about 200 quid playing poker on the Friday so cant complain too much. How were you sitting over the weekend?

My mate supposidly put a 5 spot on beckford 3-0 and said he cleared 750 which would be 150-1 so i dont see that being true

hell of a pick if he did

i only had 3 bets this weekend, 40 maynard at 7/4, 5 on spurs 0-0 and 20 on the national so 45 profit

guna chuck 40 on him to score tomoro night at 11/4 with 365 and a fiver on him to get 2+ at 20/1

seems like a good bet at 11/4, i might get involved.

Im thinking spurs inter double aswell not checked the odds but I can see them both getting results.

78 for me this week, best GW of the season rankwise, very pleased with that.

RVP and Nasri could have seen me even higher but with Tevez still to play, there's still potential.

Anyone got any thoughts on when Adam becomes unprotected? Will he price rise immediately then? I need to get him in before that happens.

really need to mix my team up for this week, got 2 freebs been thinking the unthinkable and shipping Nani out, him and welbeck out (both of whom the 4 players above me in my mini league have) would give me £16.7m to get a mid and forward. I already have rvp, rooney, luiz, ash young, adam, lamps... Walcott is a no no as the 3 above me have him, been thinking Nasri and 8m ish striker or gamble on torres and walters(stoke)........sooooooooo stumped at what to go for, any ideas guys?

Don't go for Nasri...or Torres for that matter, post your team up with your bank funds and it'll be easier for people to help!

Unlucky with SEB i thought he would have at least got a goal.

Im thinking downing for walcott, i think he'l be let lose on liverpools weak left hand side. I'm going to watch the game tonight and see how johnson gets on and gage it from that. I know they'l prob be feilding wilson (cracking player) at LB but hes naturally a centre half.

I wouldnt take a hit mate and just hold tight with berba.

Right, think I could do with some advice with the upcoming DGW.

        Team is

        Hart/Robinson

        Luiz Coleman Baines Hangeland Huth

        VDV Lumpard Nasri Adam Nolan

        Sturridge Welbeck V.Persie

I need to get 11 on the pitch, so Nolan has to go.

        Nolan --> Essien/Ramires?

        or

        Nolan----> Modric/Bale?

or does anyone have any other prospects? Got to be under 7.3, playing this week, and with a half decent game next week...

I had considered Walcott too, but don't like the rotation risk, and the fact they're away to Bolton next GW.

        Cheers in advance.

        Morning all,

How are we all feeling about our FPL weekend so far? Only Kolorov for me tonight so not expecting much more than my 56 with Parker coming off the bench with 2.

        Thinking ahead to this week.

        Kolorov > Luiz
        Coleman > R. Johnson
Hernandez > Zamora/Sturridge (with an eye on GW 34)

8 point hit though,is it worth it with a 80+ lead in mini-league?

Chelsea go out of the CL tomorrow and it's Torres to start ALL remaining league games. No need to keep Drogba 'on-side' then, he's gone in the summer.

Lumpy Lampard may be put to one side also, again with an eye on next season. Benayoun could be a super 'left-field' pick. (He & Torres go back a long way)

right then people im after a touch of advise..
fell from 8000 to now 34000 in the last 4 odd weeks.
        team is as follows:

        foster begovic
        carr walker kelly djourou huth
        nani vdv nasri adam ethers
        rvp tevez bent

i have to make 3 transfers for a 4 point hit was gonna do

        kelly > luiz
        vdv > lampard
        tevez > zamora

is it worth it i know zamora isnt playing but i have to take tevez out to afford these transfers leaves me with nothing in the bank, and 6 dgw33 & 4 dgw34, i know its long winded but really need help as ive lost all the leads in my leagues and am now panicking.

            reply fail.

Yes but i'd still rather have 2 dgw players over 1... even if arsenal's fixtures aren't great, keepers can pick up 5-6 points in a double without keeping a clean sheet.
