Arsenal miss chances aplenty but still enjoy their day to the seaside, putting three past Blackpool to move seven points off the top with a game in hand. Near the bottom, Aston Villa record a crucial victory in a weekend that saw Gerard Houllier’s side become the only club in the lower half of the table to pick up all three points….Here’s the notes from yesterday afternoon.

Gunners Keep Up the Chase
With the concise passing of Cesc Fabregas cutting apart Blackpool’s flimsy offside trap time and again, Arsenal were granted numerous opportunities to find the net in their visit to Bloomfield Road and it’s indicative of their recent wastefulness that Richard Kingson was beaten on just three occasions. Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie, in particular, should have put the game beyond their hosts in a manner far more emphatic than the 3-1 scoreline suggests. Van Persie, nevertheless, did notch a goal, an assist and was subsequently awarded the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

The win takes Arsenal’s unbeaten league run to fourteen games and adds extra impetus to their upcoming double gameweek (LIV & tot), where investment in their players will undoubtedly be high, despite a tricky pair of games.

Jens Between the Sticks
A pre-match knee injury to Manuel Almunia gave Jens Lehmann the chance to make a return to the Arsenal first team and the German came up with one or two crucial saves to maintain the Gunners lead at times. After the game, Arsene Wenger admitted he is unsure whether Almunia will be ready for next Sunday Emirates showdown with Liverpool. Wojciech Szczesny was also described as being “not far away” from his return.

Theo Theory
Wenger clearly has a selection headache with Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott all vying for roles on the flank in Arsenal’s midfield. Nasri looks his preferred option with Arshavin and Walcott seemingly set to rotate. It was the latter on the bench at Blackpool but he saw action on the hour-mark and provided the pass for Van Persie’s simple third goal. Walcott would now seem well placed to start the Emirates clash with Liverpool on Sunday – if he can impress in that one, he could also seal his starting role for Arsenal’s second fixture of the gameweek at Spurs. Walcott looks a double gameweek gamble then but, at 6.9 in the FPL, one that some may opt to take.

Blackpool Slump Again
The home defeat means Ian Holloway’s side have picked up five points from their last twelve games and the only real positive for Blackpool this weekend is that all the teams below them lost, too. Olly will need all his powers of motivation to rally the troops, with the Seasiders now facing a critical run of three home games in succession (WIG, NEW, STK) which may just determine their chances of survival. At least DJ Campbell has served his suspension and got some game time under his belt yesterday ahead of next weekend’s vital match against Roberto Martinez’s bottom of the table Latics.

Villa Change Tactics
Gerard Houllier switched systems for the home game with Newcastle, reverting to a 4-4-2 that saw Gabby Agbonlahor join Darren Bent up front. Ashley Young, having had a free role behind Bent of late, moved back to the left wing, though swapped flanks with Stewart Downing throughout the game. This allowed Stilian Petrov to join Jean Makoun in the centre of midfield, giving the home side a more robust edge in the middle.

Villa have been defensively poor this season and this was their first clean sheet in ten games and only their second since gameweek ten. The 1-0 win should boost their confidence ahead of a decent run of fixtures that reads (whm, STK, wba, WIG).

Darren Bent
Owners of the forward can count themselves unlucky, as Bent was on the wrong side of two contentious decisions that, on another day, could have seen him walk away with a decent Fantasy haul. The January signing found the net at the tail end of the first half only for it to be harshly ruled out for offside then, in the second forty-five, was fouled inside the Newcastle box and could easily have won a penalty for his side. Rather than returning two goals or one goal and an assist, he finished the match with nothing to show for his efforts and picked up just 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points instead.

Pardew Counts The Cost of Absentees
Alan Pardew already had to do without both Kevin Nolan and Cheik Tiote for the trip to Villa Park due to suspension, but the Newcastle boss also had to rule Shola Ameobi out of the proceedings with inflammation of the knee, an injury the forward picked up on Saturday. Speaking after the game, though, Pardew is keeping his fingers crossed the situation isn’t serious. Such was the visitors lack of options, Fabrizio Colocinni played in centre midfield in the 1-0 defeat, though Jose Enrique did return to bolster the back-four.

Pardew fielded a 4-4-2 formation with the unfamiliar partnership of Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands leading the line, though the pair rarely threatened their hosts. St James’ Park may have seen plenty of goals for the home side over the course of this season, but this game was the fourth in the last five away from home that Newcastle have failed to find the net. A home game with Man United is up next, followed by a trip to Blackpool and a chance to address this toothless form on the road.

People getting all turned on by the fact that Lampard is on pens and freekicks, when the fact is that drogba took most of if not all the freekicks and corners vs. Wigan. Time to kill this game off! 🙂

downgraded defoe to welbeck to allow me to bring in malouda for bentley. now THAT'S some transfer magic.

I'd have quite liked a Chelsea striker ahead of Lampard really, but Carlo did say a week or so ago that he's got four strikers and is going to rotate them, so that put me right off. May pay off nicely for you though.

What hits are you prepared to take this week? And whats your plan for DGW players.

Im thinking of an 8 point hit which will leave me with

6 DGW players for GW 33.

    and

3 DGW players for GW 34 and hope to add 2 more players to that to make 5, with another 4 point hit in GW34.

    Whats your plans?

Been a while since I was in Vegas, but most of the strip hotels are pretty much of a muchness. Bellagio and Venice (being relatively new when I was last there) were perhaps a bit nicer. I’m assuming you are looking to be in the centre of it all.

The Voodoo lounge on top of Rio was the best bar to be in bar none, no Casino racket going on all the time, and gorgeous bar staff.

the tropicana is very reasonably priced, on the strip, and is adjacent to mgm grand, luxor, new york new york.

a bit of a walk up to venetian/bellagio, but still. also they have nice low-limit tables in their lobby casino.

only somewhat, though. gws 10-19 and 25-31 would've brought you little joy.

had him gw 2-15, myself, then brought tim cahill in for him, who gave me 34 points to malouda's 21 over the same period (gw 15-21).

that spot in my midfield has been a bit of a rollercoaster ever since: cahill>>gerrard>>fabs>>cahill>>nasri (though i had nasri elsewhere whilst fiddling with gerrard/fabs.

brought him back in yesterday and giving him the armband this weekend with rather high confidence.

Yeah, although I only ever saw him play as a keeper - World Cup in USA '94, that's the first World Cup I can remember. It generally isn't regarded as being a great tournament, mainly because the final was rubbish (oh, and England weren't there - although perhaps that's not necessarily a bad thing!). It always brings back great nostalgic memories for me though!

That is the point - rotation. Not much point if they are sitting on the bench. I would say Walcott is a decent shout as he does not cost much and will possibly become a near nailed on starter. Drogs will def keep getting rotated as Torres is the one they spent 50 mil on and it was not to warm the bench.

    Baines/Luiz/Bardsley/Huth/Simpson

Naw, surprisingly I'm happy enough with the team this GW. I'll probably save my transfer and cull all the Everton ones next gameweek.

I know the doubles are attractive but no one (that I can afford) really jumps out at me as essential. The likes of Nasri, Walcott, Bosingwa are all so risky.

Drogs or Fabs look like good prospects for those who can afford but I've basically nailed my colours to the mast by bringing in Lamps so I'll have to stick with that. Is doubling up on Brum defence a good idea?

I've thought about bringing in another Brum defender for Coleman, but they haven't really kept cleanies since Dann got injured.

Same happened last year when Brum were fighting to stay up in the end of the season they started to concede goals. Foster is good to combine with a defender though, because he gets save points... I went with Zesny last double, gone with Cech this one and covered the Brum defense with Carr. It's worked out fine thus far.

I'm not chasing and I don't really understand that logic... I think you should always go for the combo that you think have the highest point expectancy. Doesn't matter if you're chasing tail or trying to dodge pussies matrix style.

The teams will hardly be identical anyway. I think you should always have the bighitters who are most likely to get points, even if your rivals have them, mixed up with a few cheap differentials. If you're chasing a 100pt lead you could go a bit crazy, but it's important to get the obvious scorers even if your rivals have them.

Obviously it depends on the difference, if it's like 30 points then don't go crazy but if it's 100 points at this stage having differentials like Walker or Gyan isn't probably gonna be enough. But yeah dont just pick people coz their different, do it cos u think they'll score well.

Apart from Lampard, you can't captain a Chelsea attacker with any confidence that they'll play both games. And he's the worse way to spend £13m possible, unless you buy Perch three times.

My thoughts on the Man Utd Rotation Situation:

    Premiership: Nani & Berbatov
Champions League: Rooney, Lil Pea & Park.

I have a feeling Fergie might save Berba & Nani for the league, with it pretty much in the bag I think he will leave these 2 to be match winners in the league and keep them ticking along.

I think in CL he will look for a more solid midfield unit with Valencia & Park on the wings leaving Rooney & Hernandez to be the inspiration up front. I think Rooney & Valencia will still play a lot in the league and Nani in the CL but I think this could be how he might set up till the end of the season.

          Everton (H)
          Schalke/Inter (A)
          Arsenal (A)
          Schalke/Inter (H)
          Chelsea (H)

I think Fergie trusts him the least out of Valencia, Park and Giggs. The only one of these games I can really see him starting for sure would be Everton(h).

      Bench: Smalling, Huth, Welbeck

Trying to decide if I should take a 4 point hit and go Huth/Coleman --> Ivanovic & Carr. Alternatively I could do A Young to Walcott. Not sure if it's worth getting a few extra changes in now or saving the transfer for next week and have another 4 players for the double.

5 points ahead in mini league with 2nd place with Tevez still to play.

      Guys

Does a strategy of rotating the 5th. midfielder each week to take advantage of the doubles make good sense or is it a fool's errand? Currently I have Nasri VdV Adam Nani and Young. I was thinking of:

      VdV > Lampard
      Nasri > Dempsey
      Dempsey > Yaya Toure
      Young > VdV

Sure it's not a bad idea. So long as you can afford to buy them all back when you need to. Link your team and let's have a butchers at the rest of them then.

I'm in Tokyo, sat here wearing a construction workers helmet, just in case. We've been having shocks all afternoon. Trying to take my mind off it with a bit of fantasy football, that's all.

I've never understood how people can think that address there... could lead to something specific like one's fantasy team. Mindboggling.

12 goals. 3 assist. 21 Bonus in his last 10 games.

        RVP. FPL LEGEND.

Has any other players come close to that kind of form??

        Ronaldo in 07-08 maybe?

And he should have had a hat trick yesterday. It's a brave man who'd captain Lampard over him next week, given their form at the moment.
