Arsenal miss chances aplenty but still enjoy their day to the seaside, putting three past Blackpool to move seven points off the top with a game in hand. Near the bottom, Aston Villa record a crucial victory in a weekend that saw Gerard Houllier’s side become the only club in the lower half of the table to pick up all three points….Here’s the notes from yesterday afternoon.

Gunners Keep Up the Chase
With the concise passing of Cesc Fabregas cutting apart Blackpool’s flimsy offside trap time and again, Arsenal were granted numerous opportunities to find the net in their visit to Bloomfield Road and it’s indicative of their recent wastefulness that Richard Kingson was beaten on just three occasions. Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie, in particular, should have put the game beyond their hosts in a manner far more emphatic than the 3-1 scoreline suggests. Van Persie, nevertheless, did notch a goal, an assist and was subsequently awarded the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

The win takes Arsenal’s unbeaten league run to fourteen games and adds extra impetus to their upcoming double gameweek (LIV & tot), where investment in their players will undoubtedly be high, despite a tricky pair of games.

Jens Between the Sticks
A pre-match knee injury to Manuel Almunia gave Jens Lehmann the chance to make a return to the Arsenal first team and the German came up with one or two crucial saves to maintain the Gunners lead at times. After the game, Arsene Wenger admitted he is unsure whether Almunia will be ready for next Sunday Emirates showdown with Liverpool. Wojciech Szczesny was also described as being “not far away” from his return.

Theo Theory
Wenger clearly has a selection headache with Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott all vying for roles on the flank in Arsenal’s midfield. Nasri looks his preferred option with Arshavin and Walcott seemingly set to rotate. It was the latter on the bench at Blackpool but he saw action on the hour-mark and provided the pass for Van Persie’s simple third goal. Walcott would now seem well placed to start the Emirates clash with Liverpool on Sunday – if he can impress in that one, he could also seal his starting role for Arsenal’s second fixture of the gameweek at Spurs. Walcott looks a double gameweek gamble then but, at 6.9 in the FPL, one that some may opt to take.

Blackpool Slump Again
The home defeat means Ian Holloway’s side have picked up five points from their last twelve games and the only real positive for Blackpool this weekend is that all the teams below them lost, too. Olly will need all his powers of motivation to rally the troops, with the Seasiders now facing a critical run of three home games in succession (WIG, NEW, STK) which may just determine their chances of survival. At least DJ Campbell has served his suspension and got some game time under his belt yesterday ahead of next weekend’s vital match against Roberto Martinez’s bottom of the table Latics.

Villa Change Tactics
Gerard Houllier switched systems for the home game with Newcastle, reverting to a 4-4-2 that saw Gabby Agbonlahor join Darren Bent up front. Ashley Young, having had a free role behind Bent of late, moved back to the left wing, though swapped flanks with Stewart Downing throughout the game. This allowed Stilian Petrov to join Jean Makoun in the centre of midfield, giving the home side a more robust edge in the middle.

Villa have been defensively poor this season and this was their first clean sheet in ten games and only their second since gameweek ten. The 1-0 win should boost their confidence ahead of a decent run of fixtures that reads (whm, STK, wba, WIG).

Darren Bent
Owners of the forward can count themselves unlucky, as Bent was on the wrong side of two contentious decisions that, on another day, could have seen him walk away with a decent Fantasy haul. The January signing found the net at the tail end of the first half only for it to be harshly ruled out for offside then, in the second forty-five, was fouled inside the Newcastle box and could easily have won a penalty for his side. Rather than returning two goals or one goal and an assist, he finished the match with nothing to show for his efforts and picked up just 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points instead.

Pardew Counts The Cost of Absentees
Alan Pardew already had to do without both Kevin Nolan and Cheik Tiote for the trip to Villa Park due to suspension, but the Newcastle boss also had to rule Shola Ameobi out of the proceedings with inflammation of the knee, an injury the forward picked up on Saturday. Speaking after the game, though, Pardew is keeping his fingers crossed the situation isn’t serious. Such was the visitors lack of options, Fabrizio Colocinni played in centre midfield in the 1-0 defeat, though Jose Enrique did return to bolster the back-four.

Pardew fielded a 4-4-2 formation with the unfamiliar partnership of Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands leading the line, though the pair rarely threatened their hosts. St James’ Park may have seen plenty of goals for the home side over the course of this season, but this game was the fourth in the last five away from home that Newcastle have failed to find the net. A home game with Man United is up next, followed by a trip to Blackpool and a chance to address this toothless form on the road.

The malouda bandwagon - i don't get it

someone already said what i was thinking, that benayoun will play more. ancelotti has it in his mind that torres will only score with yossi on the pitch. he could even play both games.

he's a mincer which is what chelsea need, a crafty midfielder. the power surge of malouda and anelka with even kalou hasn't worked for ages and in a 4-4-2 situation he will go for a crafty yossi imo. when joe cole played on the left they looked good and i think he will play that from now until the end of the season

yes, but if torres is starting games on the bench, why not keep malouda and drogba together (lord knows they fed off each other enough during the first few gameweeks, when chelsea were facing the same run of fixtures they do now).

staring down a champs league exit and only 5 points above not qualifying for next year's CL, i don't see ancelotti going for the more defensive 4-4-2 over 4-3-3, especially when his main midfield engine (fatty fat fat) struggles in 4-4-2.

i think malouda's pitch time over the dgw dwarfs yossi's, and malouda's scores look like those in the first 5 gws of the season.

      b-a-n-d-w-a-g-o-n

      that's what that spells.

Definitely.Nani has been very good this season because he has played on the right wing.

Now he has had few good games on the left, but by his own admission he prefers to play on the right and is much better there.

United will play Valencia on the right, when fit.Meaning Nani is less effective, hence all his season may not be quite as spectacular.

Anyone without Lampard not getting him in? I can't decide if i should get him or not. My other option is to double up on the chelsea defense.

    Coleman > Cashley
Berbatov > Zamora (for the next DGW)

    Would leave me with:

    Foster (Al-Habsi)

    Cashley, Djourou, Luiz (Simpson, Huth)

    Nasri, Nani, Adam, VDV, Young

    Rooney, RVP (Zamora)

    Thoughts?

VDV > Lamps would be good for you I'd say. You might have to throw in Berbs > Zamora in order to fund it but I'd say it would be worth it. You need some form of Chelsea attack for the DGW.

Berbs > Drogba is another option I'd consider if I were you but again it may require a shuffle in funds.

Yep same situation as you, and we have pretty similar teams.
The only way I can get in Lampard would be to get rid of either Nani or Rooney as well as VDV (which I don't want to do) What would be your Lampard transfer plan? Personally, I prefer the double up on Chelsea defence and prepare your team for next week as it's what I'm leaning towards doing.

In fairness now man people were saying Lumps was a must from this GW on and I haven't seen anything from him to suggest he is. Even ratemyteam which is meant to be based on numbers had him down as the most needed this week but sometimes you gotta just watch and come to the conclusion that actually he's pretty sh!t this season.

i cant see any chelsea midfield that most suitable to be choose..especially for this DGW..

let forget bout that guy..and let him be in my lineup..at least for this couple of game..i wanna to focus on..and upgrading my forward..

DJ? Great run of fixtures and it'd give ya some Wonga (see what I did) to play with while Lump-back whale is in your team. Yeah it's having 2 blackpool but they're prob their 2 biggest goal threats anyway.

    Cech (Al Habsi)
Luiz, R Johnson, Samba, (Huth, Elmohamady)
    Nani, Nasri, Barton, Adam, (Silva)
    Rooney, RVP, Carroll,

I have one sub to make. . .

Was thinking about making it in midfield - Silva out. But who to bring in?
Or would I be better off doing something else?

    What would you suggest?

I've got 10.8 to spend on a striker and keeper, need to be playing in gw33 not too fussed about dgw status though that would be helpful as I'll be taking a 4point hit. Currently assessing the merits of:

    Cech + Hoillet

    Alumunia/Lehemen + DJ Campbell

Tough because you already have luiz and lamps, so a third chelski player may seem like overkill

reasonable but I'd prefer to find an attacking player (i.e. Sturridge) for my hit unless you're chasing in your mini-league and you want to gamble in which case consider any dgw hits that give you different players than your rivals

Best guess it was just one individual who made a trip to pronta print, distributed the flyers and encouraged a bunch of brain-dead fans to wave and jeer. Still very unpleasent to see.

My formation is 4-3-1-2, but all of the formations with 4 at the back are very popular
I would think playing online 3 at the back is suicide, and playing 5 in defence rather means you have less of an attacking threat
Getting players with a 4 at the back formation is always more expensive, so if looking for cheap players go for 5 at the back

It just depends on your playing style, and whatever suits you best

Guys this is my current team, need some advice for potential transfers:

    Foster Al-Habsi
    Luiz Coleman Vidic Walker Kelly
    Adam Nani VDV Fabregas Barton
    RVP Odemwingie Tevez

    0.7M in the bank

I want to add Lampard to my ranks for the Double Gameweek but what does everyone think is the best option:

    1) Barton and Tevez to Lampard and Hoilett

    or

    2) VDV and Vidic to Lampard and Djourou (providing he returns fit)

    or

    3) Only other options I can think of that don't involve Lampard and not involve a hit may be bringing in another Chelsea defender in for Vidic or bringing in Torres or Drogba for Tevez??

if it was me in that situation I'd go for option 3...Chelsea have the dgw and then 4/5 good fixtures...they're also looking solid defensively...look at the Spurs and Man City fixtures after gw33...do you really want to be selling their players...pretty soon you might be a buyer

6 in 8 since he returned from injury, back him every game and youll make a tidy profit
