As Alex Ferguson served the last game of his touchline ban, Man United dropped a couple of points to breathe life back into the title race and give Arsenal hope ahead of tonight’s crucial North London derby.

Newcastle become only the fourth side in the history of the Premier League to stay undefeated at home against the so-called “Big Four” in a season following promotion and now sit comfortably in ninth place on 40 points, with ample respite above the drop zone; mission accomplished for the Magpies. Here’s the lowdown on last night’s game…

Toon Returns
A knee injury kept Steve Harper out of the Newcastle starting XI, allowing Tim Krul to take his place between the sticks for the first time since gameweek 20. Shola Ameobi also made it back into first-team action, joining Peter Lovenkrands up front in a game where both sides matched up with 4-4-2 formations.

Chiek Tiote came back after a two game suspension and picked up his obligatory yellow card, the eleventh of this, his debut season. On-loan Aston Villa man Stephen Ireland finally made his Newcastle bow, coming on for Lovenkrands with just over twenty minutes of the game left.

No Nolan, No Goals
For the first time this season, Newcastle failed to score in consecutive games and it’s perhaps no coincidence that this should occur with club captain Kevin Nolan serving a two-match suspension. The midfielder picked up his tenth yellow card of the season against Wolves in gameweek 31, signing off with a goal in the 4-1 home romp. Thankfully for Alan Pardew, Nolan is now available for the weekend trip to Blackpool, a game that virtually guarantees goals and will put Nolan back on our Fantasy redars.

With thirty six goals scored at St James Park, Pardew’s side went into the game as the second-highest scoring home side in the league and this was the first time they have failed to score in front of their own supporters since gameweek 13.

Smalling Back
Having started in the weekend FA Cup Semi Final defeat to Man City, Rio Ferdinand missed out with a calf injury, allowing Chris Smalling back into the United starting XI. The youngster has played every minute of United’s last eight league games now, with this their third clean sheet in the last four matches. Smalling bagged 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for good measure, picking up 8 points on the night and is proving great value for his 4.5 price. With United’s Champions League campaign still very much alive, Smalling could yet earn further starts and Fantasy returns – United face Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday – three days later they travel to Germany to face Schalke in the semi-final first leg. Rest and rotation could be in evidence this weekend then with Smalling in line to benefit again.

United Refresh the Wings
Indeed rotation is integral to keeping the squad fresh and last night saw Ryan Giggs and Nani as United’s wide men. Antonio Valencia had started the previous three league games and, having also made the first XI on Saturday at Wembley, dropped to the bench for the trip to Newcastle. Anderson joined Michael Carrick in the middle, with Paul Scholes suspended for three matches after his x-rated red card against Man City.

The United gaffer gave reason for his changes after the match:

“We did that tonight [reshuffled the pack] as we tried our best to freshen up. We did the best we could as it was a tiring pitch at Wembley, a slow pitch that can drag players down a little bit. But, in fairness, we didn’t show signs of that – we were energetic and our players thrived on the challenge, which is good coming at this stage of the season.”

Faith in Nani may be wavering further following last night’s blank – the Portuguese winger has now failed to score in his last seven league appearances – his previous goal coming back in gameweek 27. A total of 5 assists and 5 FPL Bonus have kept things ticking during that spell but, a largely unproductive performance last night, coupled with the risk of rotation, is a reason for concern. Nani looks a doubtful starter for the weekend meet with Everton, unless of course Ferguson plans to go to leave him on the bench at Schalke of course.

Fergie Confident
This was just the second time in their last twenty-one league games United have failed to find the net. So was it two points dropped or one point nearer the title? According to Sir Alex, it’s the latter, as his side edge nearer their 19th title.

“I’m confident we’ll be fine now as that was a hard one to get over. At this stage of the season, we’re in a better position than we were on Saturday as there’s one less game and five games left. I think you’ve got to look at Chelsea also and how they respond to three home games in a row. There’s two important games coming up – obviously Arsenal away and Chelsea at home. But we’ve got a better goal difference than Chelsea and I think we’re in a better position today.”

Don't tempt me to drop Nani, as soon as I do he'll score 5!

Whats everyones transfer plans this week? I can't decide between Dempsey, Etherington, O'Hara, Walters or Jarvis to replace either Nasri or Adam if he's injured.

Same issue. Walcott and Nasri out but for which two of Dempsey/Walters/Etherington/O'Hara/Jarvis?

Thinking Etherington is defo one, and I had planned Dempsey for the other, but not so sure now, recent scores not that great, and he's no longer OOP with Zamora back.....

Stoke and Fulham have bad fixtures other than the double is all, I think I'm going for Jarvis or O'Hara as they have decent games afterwards.

both stoke and fulham have great fixtures the following week as well. Getting a stoke or fulham player in means getting three fgood fixtures compared to one or two for most others.
Also fulham at home to liverpool two weeks after the double sounds to me like a great week to own Hangeland.

Theres not many weeks left now, I can't afford to overlook the short term big points haul for the longer term investment and saving a few points hits. I can always bring in Jarvis/ O'Hara in GW 36 for Etherington/Walters when they play in the FA cup.

For this week and next week though I think i'm gonna have to go with Stoke/Fulham in the front 8, they should outscore the Wolves attacking line-up.

                (which now means they won't);)

Same dilemma, except throw in a potentially injured Welbeck into the mix. In an idea world I'd want to go into this gameweek with the following:

      Begovic/Huth
      Walters
      Dempsey
      O'hara
      Sturridge

I'm only prepared to take the one hit (if Adam/Welbeck is confirmed out). So I plan to do Nasri > Dempsey and either Adam > O'hara or Welbeck > Sturridge.

Nani looked very tired last night. Kept falling over for no reason at all (especialy in and around the box)! That wembley pitch must really have taken it's toll on him in particular.

Seriously though, I can see him being rested on Saturday and then Man U have Arsenal and Chelsea so I'm getting rid for a DGW player.

Who is a better option for the next three gameweeks?

    Zamora (Wlv/BOL, Sun, LIV)
    OR
    Carroll (BIR, NEW, Ful)

Zamora's got a double gameweek but carroll can score against anyone, and has better fixtures

Just a word of caution for those considering Stoke players for he double:

When Pompey got to the final in 2008, the players basically just stopped bothering in the league. We skanked a couple of decent results, but the trend was very much downward. As a supporter, I didn't give a toss, but as a fantasy manager this is slightly concerning. Stoke may well do the same, it's perfectly understandable.

2010 wasn't the same...we were dire all season so it was hard to tell if the cup final made any difference.

I'm sure he does, but coming out with a fan-friendly interview and getting a bunch of players who have never, and probably will never again, play in a Wembley final, to give their all in the remaining league games are two very different things.

I'm not saying he's going to keep up their approach to the top half all season, but short term i still think options from stoke are good, and the semi-final could provide huge motivation for their ambitions

I'm with JB on this. The concern that Stoke will ease off is enough for me to avoid their players. Huth would be the only one I'd have considered (this Walters talk is nuts), and even then his points aren't consistent enough to overcome that.

          Since his 19 point mega-haul in GW26, his best scores are a 4 and a 6.

    Sorry for repost

I need to make a decision on transfers tonight. My current team is:
    Begovic
    Luiz Walker Djourou
    Nani Nasri Adam Lampard Young
    Hoilett RVP
    0.4 in the bank
    Subs: Foster RJohnson Coleman Tevez
    I want to do:
Coleman, Adam, Nasri and Tevez out
Huth, O’Hara, Dempsey and Sturridge in
    12 point hit
The hits effectively halved due to the DGW, meaning I need only a goal or cs for it to pay off which seems likely. I will probably get rid of dempsey next week for Silva. I will be able to bench Huth through hiss poor fixtures and I’m not worried about Sturridge or O’Hara as they have good fixtures until the end of the season and should bring in points.
Should I do it? How can I improve? Should i not do Adam to Dempsey?

I don't know how you are doing in the league but 12pt hits ring all sorts of alarm bells. Just don't do it. Remember you 'only' need a goal and a cs for it to break even, not pay off.

I know he didn't pick up the points we wanted him to, but now when their out off the CL they will go all in the league. And he is still on the penalty duty and that's always good.

I kept Djourou on my bench while he was injured and there was never an occasion that I needed the third sub. As long as you have players that you're happy enough with starting I'd just hang on to him.

Pick dependant on the rest of your outfield players.

Pick the one who you will be playing less players against so you don't have that situation of needing attacking points from a team against those you need cs points from.

Ofc this might not even matter if both keepers will give you the same. 😀

I can’t understand why so many suggest Dempsey infront of many others with a DGW coming up. Now when Zamora is back in the team doesn’t he have a less advanced role? Isn’t Zamora also their first choice to take the penalties?

Myself chooses Jarvis as he is in good form with good fixtures coming up!

    Enlighten me please!

Dempsey loves double GW's. Its simple as that. Its something with his biorhythm I think. He loves to play and midweek 🙂 I think. Maybe cause he is a Yankee I don't know.

P.S. He always delivers in doubles till know,

But Zamora is back now, and he was injured the last time they had a DGW. I think Zamora is the better choice to cover up from Fulham. If Duff is fit he would be a good option as well.

Adam had to wait until yesterday to have an X-ray because of severe swelling.
But scans have revealed no serious damage, leaving Holloway relieved.
Adam could even make a recovery in time for his side’s crunch home clash with Newcastle this weekend – but is currently a big doubt.

A club source said: “It’s safe to say everyone is relieved about Charlie.
“Hopefully he will be back for the weekend. The team needs him now more than ever before.”

Right...crunch time tonight in my cup tie. I'm 11 points behind with 7 to play, he has 6, but the differing players are below:

    Me: Terry, Djourou, Fabregas, Lampard
    Him: R Johnson, Ridgewell, Nasri

We both have Foster, Luiz and RVP(C)

How's my chances looking? Gonna be tight I reckon. Hoping for a chelsea CS and Lampard to get amongst the goals!
