Edin Dzeko does a “Torres” at Ewood Park, as the big-money January signing finally breaks his Premier League scoring duck to put Man City firmly in the driving seat for fourth spot. Roberto Mancini’s side not only win on the road for the first time in 2011, they chalk up an impressive fifteenth clean sheet of the season in a fairly routine victory. Blackburn’s winless run stretches to ten games as the threat of relegation looms larger by the week for Steve Kean’s hopelessly out of form side. Here’s the notes from gameweek 34’s final match…

No Mistake From Roberto
After his side’s 3-0 mauling at Anfield in their last league match, Roberto Mancini admitted he had “made mistakes“. The Man City boss failed to elaborate but it’s a fair to assume he was alluding to the decision to bench both David Silva and Nigel De Jong. Mancini re-installed the pair to City’s starting XI for the Blackburn trip, with Yaya Toure moved into an attacking midfield role again as a result of De Jong’s return.

Mario Balotelli led the line for City, with Dzeko -a starter at Liverpool- used as a sub instead, though the latter’s goal will give Mancini food for thought in the continued absence of Carlos Tevez, particularly as Balotelli’s adaptability meaning he could be moved out wide in a role behind the Bosnian for the upcoming gameweeks.

Dzeko was, not surprisingly, hugely relieved following his first league goal…

“I think it is a new beginning for me…I have confidence in myself but sometimes it is difficult. I am not the first one that didn’t make the best of a move. I know in future there will be much better games for me.”

Mancini will surely look to harness Dzeko’s newfound confidence and a start at home to West Ham next looks a strong possibility.

Fluid in Midfield
Adam Johnson made his third consecutive start as Mancini set the team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Johnson and David Silva were given license to roam; the pair swapped wings throughout, and their movement created plenty of problems for Blackburn. Silva, in particular, was at the hub of everything good about City’s play and quite rightly picked up the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points, though whether he keep the dubious assist is another matter altogether.

It was interesting to note that Johnson was the one who made way for Dzeko in the second half, as Balotelli switched to wide left. City will undoubtedly be subject to plenty transfers-in over the next few days, with a home game against West Ham this upcoming weekend following by a double gameweek (eve & TOT), and their midfield will come under the microscope in more detail in an article later this week on these pages.

Solid at the Back
Joe Hart’s allayed fears of a back injury to start between the sticks for City and enjoyed a fairly comfortable evening as the City defence kept Blackburn at arms length. City’s clean sheet justified Hart’s position at the top of our Watchlist rankings, while Scout Pick Aleksandar Kolarov also fetched defensive returns. With West Ham and Stoke due to visit Eastlands, plus the double fixture in gameweek 36, City’s back five remain strong investment options. Kolarov still looks the best route to Fantasy points given his attacking potential, although the return from injury of Micah Richards will give Mancini the option to switch Pablo Zabaleta to the left to threaten the Serb’s starting role.

Kean is Struggling
Kean’s stint as Blackburn boss may have got off to a positive start -three wins in the first seven games- but that winning habit is long gone. It’s four points from a possible thirty now and the club’s owners must surely be having second thoughts over the shock decision to sack Sam Allardyce back in December, when the club were sitting in 13th position.

One point off the drop zone with four games to go and with the club’s most impressive player of late -David “Junior” Hoilett- still sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Kean needs his players to respond quickly, before it‘s too late. Blackburn look devoid of any real spark right now and have scored just one goal in their last four games. With their remaining fixtures reading (BOL, whm, MUN, wol), the Lancashire outfit’s chances of survival don’t look the great.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Cool, but why not Chico?Berba is out meaning Chico is almost guaranteed to start, plus he's a goalscoring machine. And as it is,United are the favourites so I won't have to change him for the final.

Draxler will only play tonight if Schalke's injured players haven't recovered in time. I wouldn't rule this out, but he isn't first choice in midfield now that Farfán's back.

      hello mak, some suggestion on your team setup;

      gk >neuer and casillas
      df >no comment
mid>to consider di maria and matip
      fwd>raul/adebayor - for the 3rd front man !
i think (raul)had better chance scoring than hernandez just my gut feeling lol

***i think special one had the edge over pep whereas i believe saf team not easy to make it to final (50/50)chance ??

Thanks for your input, mate!I'll have to keep the same two GKs because I need to take out the other eliminated players. But yeah,I'm going with Matip and Xavi in MID(Di Maria is a rotation risk,I think). And still not decided on Chico or Raul.Still fancy Chico to score tonight.

I was surprised it got given to him at all to be honest, thought it was a classic example of a no assist goal. Which sparks interest for me in the BPS system:

Surely if a player loses his assist then his bonus point should come into question? I assume the judges take assists into consideration when deliberating this? Eg: Cahill this week and now possibly Silva...thoughts?

Any predictions for this evening's semi-final first leg in Gelsenkirchen?

A lot depends for me on whether Benedikt Höwedes has recovered for Schalke from his stomach muscle strain. He's only 50:50 at the moment, and if Höwedes isn't fit, either Kyriakos Papadopoulos (who also has muscle problems) or Joel Matip will have to drop back from central midfield to take his place, which would weaken both areas.

Ralf Rangnick rested half the team for Schalke's apathetic home defeat against Kaiserslautern at the weekend, and Jefferson Farfán is back after suspension to add more attacking threat.

Probable Schalke line-up: Neuer - Uchida, Höwedes, Metzelder, Sarpei - Matip, Papadopoulos - Farfán, Jurado (Baumjohann) - Raúl, Edu.

Which CL game are you playing Bubblejet?

I've got some decisions to make too. Got very highly placed teams in both Metro and Telegraph CL games.

Depends on how many transfers you've got left. If not too many, then it's time to take sides and back who you think will reach the final.

Easier for tonight's game. Although I reckon 0-0 is a good shout. But El Classico tomorrow? That's a tough call.

good morning. w/o transfers my squad is

    Mignolet

    Luiz, Carr, Huth

    Lamps, VDV, Adam, Nani, Dempsey

RVP, Rooney (Walker, Simpson Gyan) empty bank

    ideas (mostly standard) are
    dempsey to yaya
    nani to silva
    huth to kolarov
gyan to wingie, bench nani or dempsey
    dempsey/simpson to yaya/kolarov, bench huth -4 points
    nani/huth to silva/lescott -4 points

kuyt would need to require a hit for anyone other than lamps.

i feel if i drop a striker it should be for gyan, i do consider carroll if declared fit.

dont know if i want a pool player for a hit, willing to do 4 for 2 city players as id be getting 6 games for the price of 4.

That's what I'm thinking. Can't stand players starting on the bench, with the options United and City have on the wing and at full-back respectively, along with their fixture congestion, it seems the safe bet

1.9 for Judd is great odds, didn't realise he was 7-1 up. I was going to look yesterday at his odds for the tournament, probably been cut considerably now.

Selby is playing great. Ding was lucky to get past Bingham last night. Had a great run of the ball in the last frame. Could easily have gone the other way.

Glad Ding won though, keeps Hendry in the Top16 and keeps all the Chinese fans watching!!!

I still think Hendry is going to quit even though he's still top 16. He sounded really down when being interviewed after his loss. Then again, it was after a battering from Selby and he was probably bored of a question he can't answer with any certainty yet.

Ding was indeed a bit lucky, Selby has been really good though.

It's a shame Neil Robertson got knocked out so early, I like the way he plays, then again Judd knocked him out and you have to like the way he plays too!

Yeah i've actually bet against Judd in his last two matches so thought i better accept defeat and actually back him this time! Seems like a good plan at the moment.

I managed to get Martin Gould at 4/1 in running to beat Marco Fu so felt a bit of loyalty towards him against Trump... needless to say it was a bit misplaced!

ust got a call from them scammers in india trying to get permissions on your computer, had him going for ten minutes, then he put me onto a senior agent. Then i gave him the run around for 8 minutes being nice but stupid, then put him on hold with bollywood music on youutbe. came back 4 minutes later, and he was still there. then i put the bollywood music on again and asked him if he knew the song, and sung along with it for about 4 mins while he was trying to say ‘sir, i need you to type this into your browser now sir’…then i asked told him i fu*ked ganesh and ate beef by the truck load. He was geunuinely shocked- 25 minutes i blew on them- had them on bollywood-hod for about 7+ mins. then he cursed me into the ground.

funny stuff when youve an hour to kill and they call out of the blue! 😀 ,,

I just wonder whether Yaya could be rested at some stage in the near future. He looked absolutely shattered (or just wasn't trying) last night.

Only thing is that the City formation is basically built around him, so not playing him could force a major re-shuffle.

I'd pick Silva anyway, regardless of all that.

i saw it as yaya took a knock last night and instead of going off dropped deep and stayed deep, ran it off then in the last 10 mins started bombing forward again. so more injured than tired

Guys, need your opinions on this final UCL team:

    VdS,Wiland,
    Marcelo,Papadopoulos,O’SHEA,VIDIC,ESCUDERO,
    Nani,Schmitz,PARK,INIESTA,MATIP,
    Messi,Ronaldo,CHICHARITO.

Too heavy on Utd.,do you think with both Nani and Park rotarisks? But I don't see any other option if I'm also to have Iniesta in the team.

Could go for Xavi over Iniesta and Busquets/Mascherano over Park. But those two offer nothing in an attacking sense.

swap VdS for grace and make wiland your 1st choice keeper

Wiland plays for Copenhagen who are already eliminated hehe.I kept him in because I think VdS will be enough for this round and because I have 7 other eliminated players to take care of.

That's true.Iwas thinking that SAF tenda to favour O'Shea in CL games, but I don't see any quality starters for 5.5 apart from him.

I wouldnt captain anyone other than gerrard or tevez from city and liverpool and since neither are available id say it would be unadvisable to captain one of their players.

Id be afraid that any city player i captained would be randomly unexplainably dropped by captain buffoon (mancini) and with regards to liverpool, would you really captain one of their players? Kuyt gets lots of points but id still not feel safe captaining him and the same goes for meirelles. suarez is liverpools best player but not really getting the points that would warrant me captaining him.

I don't think Sturridge will play if he has a knock.
If he aggravates the injury, Chelsea might get mad and refuse to send out any more young stars on loan.

I've got Sturridge in my team, so I want him to play.
But I would imagine that Chelsea will be keeping an eye out, so that Bolton don't flog their player into the ground.
