Scouting The Doubles

Tottenham approach their double gameweek on the back of a controversial Stamford Bridge defeat last weekend but, dodgy decisions aside, have not been in the best of form of late, with just one win in the last eight league games.

For months, Harry Redknapp’s side had been vying with Man City for the all-important fourth spot that would offer the chance of Champions League football next term, but now find themselves in sixth place, overtaken by a resurgent Liverpool. Level on points with Kenny Dalglish’s men, Spurs do have a game in hand and gaining those points will be vital, considering their gameweek 37 fixture is a trip to Anfield.

Prospects

First up in the double gameweek is a home game with Blackpool this weekend and a chance to avenge the 3-1 defeat at Bloomfield Road back in February. Spurs have drawn as many games as they’ve won at home this season but have scored 8 in their last three at White Hart Lane and will surely be too much for a Blackpool side that have collected one point and conceded 18 goals in their last six trips on the road.

The second game is a tricky fixture; a trip to Eastlands, where Man City have won seven of their last eight games. Roberto Mancini’s side have also clocked up ten of their fifteen clean sheets this season at home. Spurs have failed to score on the road just once since October, however, and, knowing a win would really open up the race for fourth spot again, can’t afford to sit back and be too cautious.

Likely Lads

Clean sheets and Tottenham tend not to go hand in hand and with the side conceding 2 or more goals in six of their last eight league fixtures, it’s more than a leap of faith to suggest their defensive options offer much hope of decent returns.

Instead, it’s a couple of midfielders that seem the best bet. Rafael Van der Vaart has come back into form of late, picking up 25 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in his last three games. With spot-kick duties factored in, it’s no surprise to see him leading our current Captain’s Poll.

He may have just 2 goals and 2 assists to his name thus far, but Luka Modric is second only to Charlie Adam in Bonus Points this season- his total of 31 is just one point shy of equalling Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale’s combined tally. Modric has been awarded Bonus in 14 of his 28 appearances- a sign of his consistency of performance.

Cheeky Punts

Gareth Bale’s recent form suggests he’d be no more than a punt for this week; his highest score in his last nine appearances has been 3 points, he has 1 goal and 1 Bonus Point in 2011 and has not assisted a Tottenham goal since gameweek 16. The chance of him tearing Blackpool apart will see much Fantasy Investment this week but with hamstring injuries to Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Vedran Corluka, there’s a possibility he could be fielded at left-back.

A look at the Tottenham forwards suggests Roman Pavlyuchenko seems the most likely bet here; the Russian is the only attacker with any guaranteed game time right now. Pavlyuchenko has started eight of Spurs’ last nine games, scoring three times in that run of fixtures, whereas Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe have managed eight starts between them, an indication of Redknapp’s current selection policy.

    hey lads, a little help needed. i have yaya & silva for the double. im looking to transfer in vdv but this involves getting rid of either nani or lampard, obviously its pure guess work as after this weekends game/result it could look a good/bad transfer. at the mo im thinking nani out?

        Take out Nani. If Man U win then you won't want Nani for the run-in, but Lampard at home to Newcastle will still be a useful fixture. If Chelsea win then both players are great prospects.

        Play the percentages and there's more options of wanting to keep Lampard. That said I don't think he'll get anything this weekend.

          Which leads me to my dillema. I can only get in VDV without a hit by shipping lamps. I'll have more than enough to get him back in or should I just take a hit. lost 2nd place by 1pt this week and the difference is €100 http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/eventhist.mc?id=4634&event=35

            you have a way harder choice to make! it would nearly have to be rooney or rvp out in the 4point hit to get vdv... id go with lamps out for vdv & if u want him back, like you said you can afford him.

        Luiz, Huth, Baines (Hangeland, Coleman,)

        VDV, Yaya, Lampard, Dempsey (Adam)

        RVP, Odem, Sturridge

        I'm thinking...
        Dempsey --> Modric
        Coleman --> Cahill

        Adam survives again!! I can't believe it! I'd have the money to replace him for another hit, but then i'd prob have to bench Lampard...

    I am not buying into the City or Spurs defence this week, have a freebie, but tempted to leave it and have two next week when we might have a better idea how both United and Chelsea will be forced to play the remaining games, if United win for instance, I would be tempted to take Rooney OUT and bring in someone else as he may only have 1 more start in the league if they can beat Blackburn, in any event, I think I am happy with my team, what do folk thing? Subs right?

    as i was saying yesterday, i'm STILl very tempted to NOT get vdv this week and hope he does nowt v blackpool, or is even rested. Still 48 behind, have to take risks, and with my rival guaranteed to captain him, captaining someone else and hoping he does nothing seems my only option.

    Spending a transfer to get him and captaining him, severely lessens my chances of making a big gain on my rival.

      i guess you could go that route, but. the last two weeks, my rival and I both had dempsey, he'd captained him, I didn't and he went ahead. this past week, we both captained Kuyt. Differentials are key at this point, but obvious captain choices, such as VdV, need to be considered this late in the game. assuming your rival will C VdV

      Your logic is perfect, u cant captain VdV and hope to make up 48 points.

      My rival will captain Vdv. I am currently 10 points ahead of him and have taken a hit this week already (so Im 6 points ahead). I dont have VdV. Should I sell Nani for VdV for a hit, and captain VdV, to cancel the rival out? I kinda feel like this decision could well decide my season... I have Modric who is currently my captain, but I dont see him as adequate cover for Vdv...

      Opinions please!

          I may just go for RVP and hope for the best, although Stoke away certainly isnt easy.

          The problem with selling Nani is that my Rival also has Nani. Come last day of the season, IF UTD need the goals and points, Ill be in a serious predicament. I think I'd rather risk it this week, and hope VdV does nought, and if he does do well I can re-assess and take the risks I need to. If I sell Nani now I cannot get him back, and he really isnt in such bad form. I can see him tearing Blackpool apart on the final day and me in tears 🙂

    Right lads,

    Haven't posted a dilemma question in a while but here goes...

    Currently 16 points clear a-top the work league. Rival currently has Silva and Kolarov, I have Yaya.

    The initial plan was to just bring in VDV and give him the arm band - probably for Dempsey. But now I'm more inclined to make a second move to try and block the rival. Options would include:

    A) Dempsey & Kuyt > Silva & VDV
    B) Kuyt & Kelly > VDV & Kolarov

    B seems the most obvious move in terms of "sensible transfers" but A seems the best in terms of protecting a league. Thoughts/ideas?

              Not really - I just read down the G and A columns in his History, and realised I wanted to keep him! I don't always buy this positional guff - particularly with Kuyt, who seems to run just miles and miles ... 🙂

    I can't decide if doing fantasy football again next year fills me with revulsion or not. It's such a silly thing to be addicted to but there's always that worry that if you miss the starting date you might regret it all season. And what's better in life than captaining Clint Dempsey on a double game week? Might go cold turkey all the same...

      well it seems people are divided. Wolves must win this home game to West Brom, thats why I thought to play O'Hara. I am not sure if VdV is worthwhile, he has done about as much as Nani lately and everyone is saying he is in such form and Nani is not.

      My concern is then that my rival will have Nani on the alst day of the season, and I wont, and if Utd need the points and goals, Ill be in a predicament.

      I think losing ground this week with the chance to catch it up is better than risking it in the final gameweek, where he could captain Nani and destroy me.

      Could go either way, admittedly

          I also had Adam the past 4 gameweeks. Mistakes during the season are fine, but leaving risk to the final day of the season isnt a wise move.

          I dont see VdV getting much out of either game, tbh - Blackpool will be fighting for their lives, and Citeh are looking quite good at Eastlands lately. He may do well against Blackpool, I guess I'm just praying for a lowish scoring game. I have enough other differentials for me to not be too worried 🙂

    A question as to why a few think Nani won't start against Chelsea?

    Why would Fergie drop his probable player of the season, at home to a team that if they beat they win the title? Add to the fact Nani has a very good last 7 games at Old Trafford in the league, plus he's been using Valencia lately in Europe and 'resting' Nani.

    There's nothing I can think of to support why Fergie would suddenly bench Nani this weekend? Common sense suggests Valencia will start on the bench vs Chelsea with Nani starting - or both will start.

      I dont think he will rest Nani on Sunday, Nani always does well against Ivanovic, and I think it will be Valencia and Giggs tonight at home, but we will see later on, Gibson and Scholes should start tonight, and I would prefer to see Valencia play tonight and Park and Nani play against Chelsea with Carrick and Giggs in the middle

      You have Zamora and Carroll? If you do, play Zamora, he has form and the home fixture, Hangeland can handle Carroll

        Yep I have both, think i'll play Zamora to save another 4pt hit..don't see much for either player though..

          I think that's probably the right choice,Carroll may just do another 20min cameo.

      It's tough to really no if either will start. Maxi scored again so it might be tough to drop him for Carroll, Zamora should start but we thought that in the DGW. I think it will be a low scoring affair, 1-1 something like that, make of all that what u will! 😉

    *warning non fantasy football related content incoming*

    It would be super awesome if you guys could vote 'Yes' to AV tomorrow. This link, i think, explains why. http://www.blog.montgomerie.net/why-im-saying-yes-on-thursday

    Just trying to spread a word i think is important, this is one of the only places i visit regularly.

        Price doesn't bother me, what bothers me is (people voting no to AV) the fact that i brought him in for a good run of fixtures and he isn't playing. Sad face.

        I hope he will be fit, but if not i think i best bring in Odemwengie and cover that side of my rivals team.

    so ppl think VDV won't do much (could be right given spurs form)

    sturridge may not be fit

    most ppl have silva and/or yaya so im stumped as to close this tiny but annoying gap between me and my rival!

        well he's the obvious one between man city and spurs. but doesnt mean he'll actually do anything given how odd spurs have been.

        i have to make up a 5 point gap so maybe ill just make the one change and not risk it

            but im working on the assumption that anyone captaining silva must fancy man city to get something at everton...

          They're 5 points behind Arsenal with one game in hand, I think that if they win at Everton they might still try to catch them.

    Current team:
    Foster Al Hasbi
    Luiz Huth R.Johnson Walker Baird
    Lampard Nani VdV YaYa Adam
    RvP Odemwingie Suarez
    (2.2m in bank)
    1 free transfer

    I am guessing
    Possible transfers at the moment:
    Huth->Cahill
    Nani->Silva
    Adam->Hitzlsperger

    Probably will just do the one this week. Any thoughts?

      Huth to Cahill looks good to me. I think Nani is going to put out the equivalent of "STill Dre" pretty soon and make us feel foolish for ditching him. I'm probably getting him back next week if he doesn't explode against Chelsea...
